Swastikas painted on fourMidtown businesses Sun-day are only the latest inci-dents in a spate of anti-Se-mitic attacks throughoutthe city, Manhattan Bor-ough President ScottStringer said yesterday.

Overall, the number ofhate crimes was down 26percent last year com-pared to 2010, accordingto the NYPD, with 246hate crimes in 2011 com-pared to 332 in 2010.

But eight other allegedanti-Semitic events in fourmonths have officials likeStringer worried.

“This appalling incidentis not isolated,” Stringersaid of the swastikas. “Anti-Semitic crimes are spread-ing like cancer throughoutthe five boroughs.”

The Anti-DefamationLeague’s New York directorRon Meier told Metro he isconcerned about what hecalled an “unusual level”of anti-Semitic incidentsrecently.

“If the end of year andbeginning of year are anyindication, we might ex-pect to see those numbersunfold at a higher levelthan 2009, 2010,” he said.

Before he was appointed to the job by Gov. Andrew

Cuomo, Bronx native Joe Lhota served as deputy mayor of

operations under Rudolph Giuliani and on the MTA board.

Meet the new man responsi-ble for keeping the trains run-ning. Joe Lhota was confirmedas the chair of the MTA onMonday and yesterday, Metrosat down with him as he takesthe helm of the nation’slargest transit system.

What do you think will beyour biggest challenge withthis job?Improving the reputationof the MTA.Do you have any plans to banfood on subways and buses? No, I’m not interested inbanning food on the MTA,but I am interested instarting a campaign to

make sure people don’tleave food on the subwayor on the tracks, to avoidrat infestations. How likely is it that the 7 willbe extended to New Jersey? No one has formally madeany presentations to me.I’ve read about it in news-papers, but the topic hasnever come up. I do knowit would be a very complexproject.Do you agree with formerMTA chair Jay Walder’s state-ment that the MTA infrastruc-ture is in terrible condition? No, I do not. I think Jay’scomment was taken out ofcontext. He was asked to

compare a new Hong Kongsubway system with NewYork’s century-old system. That kind of comparison isillogical and it’sunfortunate that the state-ment was made. What are your thoughts on

the looming 2013 fare hike?I don’t think we shouldwait four or five yearsfor an increase and get amassive increase in oneshot. Small, biannual in-creases are a rationalstrategy. What service cuts do youthink it is possible to restoreand when? The time to do any serv-ice restorations will besometime in the futurewhen our budget and fi-nancial situation aredeemed stable.

Brooklyn Borough Presi-dent Marty Markowitz hasput his cards on the table:He wants casinos on ConeyIsland.

In his State of the Statespeech last week, Gov. An-drew Cuomo said he wantsto legalize table-game gam-bling in New York state, asuggestion that Markowitzis sweet on. Cuomo wantsto pass a constitutionalamendment to legalizegambling, which wouldbring in tax dollars and at-

tract tourists to the state, said the governor.

Markowitz thinks thegamble is a good one and

wants to get Coney Islandin on the action.

“If serious discussionsbegin on bringing a casinoto New York City, certainlyConey Island is a naturallocation and should bepart of the mix when con-sidering possible sites,”Markowitz said yesterday.

But roulette wheels andblackjack tables remain adistant dream. The consti-tutional amendment mustbe approved by Albany andthen voters, a process that

can take up to two or eventhree years.

Mayor MichaelBloomberg voiced hisdoubts that gambling isthe right bet for NewYork’s economic woes.

“I’ve never been all thatgung-ho on gambling. I’mnot sure it’s the panacea, and I worry about it beingregressive,” said the mayoryesterday.

Former Massachusetts Gov.Mitt Romney won the NewHampshire RepublicanU.S. presidential primaryyesterday by a comfortablemargin — his secondstraight victory in the raceto become his party’schoice to challenge Demo-cratic President BarackObama on Nov. 6.

Based on early returnswith about 10 percent ofthe vote counted, U.S. tele-vision networks declaredRomney the victor. With

The New Hampshire pri-mary is the second contestin the state-by-state battlefor the Republican presi-dential nomination to faceObama. Romney narrowlywon the first contest, theIowa caucuses, on Jan. 3.

The former investmentfirm chief scored the clearvictory despite rivals’ fierce11th-hour attacks paintinghim as a heartless corporate

raider who enjoys cuttingjobs. Voters responded toRomney’s claim that hisprivate sector experiencewould help him galvanizethe weak U.S. economy.

“I was looking for some-one who is smart, knowsour country, knows the fi-nancial system and how toget the country movingagain with jobs,” said EddieCarr, a 77-year-old bus driv-er who voted for Romney. “Ithink he can get the coun-try going.” REUTERS

THEWORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

Let’s spend our time togeth-er this morning checking inon America’s version of aroyal birth, shall we?

I speak, of course, aboutBlue Ivy Carter, who, ac-cording to a press releasefrom her two very famousparents, had a very “emo-tional and extremelypeaceful” birth. And, perthe release, came into theworld “naturally.”

You hear that? Not onlywas the birth peaceful, itwas “extremely” so, mean-ing that Beyonce does notvomit or poop herselfwhile bringing life intothis world. I doubt sheeven grimaced or cursed, she is that perfect.

Another perfect (andridiculous) thing? This ba-by’s bling lifestyle. Beyonceand Jay-Z reportedly spent$1.5 million on designertoys and nursery furnish-ings. “Jay-Z bought Beyoncea solid gold handmade Gin-za Tanaka rocking horse for

$600,000. They’ve evensplashed out on a $30,000magical windmill play-house for the garden and amini Bugatti car, too,” asource tells Britain’s Starmagazine. “They’ve boughta wardrobe packed withthousands of dollars’ worthof one-off designer babyclothes.” Other items re-

portedly include a Swarovs-ki crystal-encrusted high-chair, a chic lucite crib andgold and diamond rattlesfrom Tiffany & Co.

Since the source of thisstory is Star magazine, let’stake this with a grain of salt.A high chair covered incrystals? That has to causesome major diaper rash.

Perry won’t doPeople’s ChoiceKaty Perry was set to takepart in the People’s ChoiceAwards Wednesday, herfirst public appearancesince husband Russell Brandfiled for divorce, but nowshe’s skipping out on theshow. “Unfortunately I willnot be able to attend thePeople’s Choice Awards,”Perry posted to Twitter. “Iwant to thank you all forvoting for me. Fingerscrossed!”

Children actorsfor Pitt? With two parents in thebusiness, it wouldn’t besurprising if one of BradPitt and Angelina Jolie’s sixchildren decides to giveacting a try, and Pitt sayshe’s fine with that — withsome conditions. “Whatev-er they want to do. What-ever makes them happy,”Pitt tells Hollyscoop. “Butnot until they’re 18.”

Bieber getsparanoidJustin Bieber is feeling thepressure of success. “Now

that I’m on top, everyonewants to bring me down,”Bieber tells V Magazine.“Everyone’s trying to tugat me and take my spot.”The best comparisonBieber can find for his cur-

rent situation is FloydMayweather: “He’s thebest boxer in the world. Now he is a champion,”he says. “Every time hegoes to a fight now, people are like, ‘He’s

going to lose this time.’”

Oh, you don’t say? Snoop Dogg was arrestedfor marijuana possessionin Texas when a police dogsniffed out some weed onhis tour bus recently, according to TMZ. Law en-forcement officials say thediscovery came during aroutine border patrol stopand that the rapper was is-sued a citation for misde-meanor possession and re-leased. Snoop has aprescription for pot in Cali-fornia, but that might notmean much in Texas.

Men are real-ly into that stuff like jump-ing over the fire andcrawling through the mud.Group fitness events are re-ally gaining popularity. Andof course, CrossFit ... is con-tinuing to really hold onand gain new followers. It’svery cultish, but people real-ly seem to love it. I knowthat boys love it, and I knowa lot of women who love it,but you gotta have awarrior mentality. It’s a veryaggressive style of exercise.”

Anything butrun-of-the-mill Punk Rope: “It’s a classaround jump-roping. I thinkit’s really underground, but Ibelieve that that’s gonnaemerge as something kind offun and trendy for a littlewhile. I don’t know about thestaying power, but I definitely

think it’s gonna make asplash.”Lessons in butt-kicking(beyond Tae Kwon Do): “Ithink a lot of people are get-ting into more obscure mar-tial arts modalities like KravMaga — or Capoeira, which isBrazilian jujitsu.”

One week into 2012, you’ve like-ly stumbled on some of yourresolutions. Here are someideas for personal remodelingthat are slow but sure ways to a

healthier lifestyle:

Eating and drinking: Start a healthier dietand lose weight by moderating portionsize. You don’t have to clean your plate!Eat more fish, poultry, vegetables andwhole grains while limiting red meats, bread, butter and desserts. Drink six toeight 12 oz. glasses of water daily, andsnack on fresh fruit or nuts. If you loseone pound every two weeks, come 2013you’ll be more than 20 pounds lighter!

Sleep and stress: There is no such thing ascatching up on sleep, so commit yourselfto eight hours nightly. Your body needssleep to restore itself both physically andmentally, and the stress of long-termfatigue will impair your ability to copewith the day-to-day challenges of work, school and relationships.

Exercise: Training for an event a fewmonths off is a great way to inspire regu-

lar exercise and target your effortstowards achieving something tangible (a10K race, a long-distance bike ride, etc.)rather than pursuing an abstract resolu-tion like “I want to be in better shape.”

Relationships: Look for “win-win”solutions to disagreements. Try resolvingdifferences with family members in thesame way you would with co-workers oryour boss. Yelling, making verbal attacks, drawing a line in the sand or digging yourheels in are not acceptable at work, norshould they be at home. Be a good listen-er — and when someone says somethingcrazy, resist the temptation to flip thatperson off. Instead, say, “I’ll considerthat” and mull over a reasonable answer.

Health maintenance: Schedule a checkupwith your primary care doctor. Try toschedule the first appointment of the dayso you don’t have to wait. High bloodpressure, diabetes and high cholesterolall start sometime, and they are all lead-ing causes of illness and disability if unde-tected over time.

Knicks find draft steal3

Shumpertsteals vet’sminutesThe ascension of ImanShumpert means ToneyDouglas is the odd manout. D’Antoni allowedthat Douglas has been ina bit of a funk lately, in-cluding getting booed atlast week’s home loss tothe Bobcats.

“Toney has been press-ing some, so he just hasto go out there and play,”D’Antoni said.

As long as Douglas

continues topress, itmeansShumpertwill contin-ue to have

an even bigger workload. For his part,

Shumpert remains hum-ble and always defers tohis older teammates.Shumpert tries to down-play the fact he tookDouglas’ job and said thetwo can certainly coex-ist.

“Obviously he’s a dif-ferent style of guardthan I am, but it’s goodto have that because I

can play the two [shoot-ing guard], he can playthe two or either one canplay the one [pointguard],” Shumpert said, adding that another vet-eran point guard hasbeen instrumental so farin his development.“With Baron sitting outright now he sees a lot. He’s been through it all. What he does is tell mewhat to look for so Iwon’t make the mistake. He sees things I mightnot and it allows me touse my athleticism. ...I’m happy I’ve got him.”

METRO/TW

It may be too early to knowif the Knicks have a shot atthe title, but fans alreadythink they got the steal ofthe draft.

Rookie Iman Shumperthas so quickly emerged asone of the premier first-yearplayers that head coachMike D’Antoni has decidedto start him at point guard, even though Toney Douglasmanned that spot sinceopening day. Shumpertmade his second startagainst the Bobcats andD’Antoni said that shouldbe the plan for the foresee-able future.

“He’s starting to get abetter feel for what we wantand I do think as Shumpprogresses he’ll get evenbetter. We’re really excitedabout what we’ve got,” saidD’Antoni. “His presence on

the defensive end is huge. When you have a 6-foot-5,220-pound ferocious andstrong defender like that, with Tyson [Chandler] inthe back, it really shores upa lot of stuff. He’s been im-pressive on that end.

“Offensively, he keepstrying to be simple andmake the right play, makeshots. He’s played reallywell. And this is the start ofit. Hopefully, he staysgrounded and keeps goingforward, and if that hap-pens he should make a bigimpact on every game.”

Die-hard hockey fans mayknow her as the ex-wife ofanother NHL player, RichardZednik. They were marriedfor three years before a con-tentious divorce inwhich he gave her $1million in cash.

At any rate,Welch madePenner a nicepancakebreakfast, and his backfroze to thepoint that

he couldn’t stand up. He said, “I justleaned over to dip into some deliciouspancakes that my wife made. ... It’s justlike [the pain] wraps around you andsqueezes ... so it was disappointing.Hopefully it’s just an isolated incident.”

2012 NYC real The Real Deal asked experts for their thoughts on

what to expect this year Higher rents, foreign buyers and low interest rates are on the horizon

Andrew Heiberger, founder and CEO atTownOn the Manhattan salesfront, I believe thatprices and price-per-footin all parts of Tribeca, the far West Village, No-ho and west of Park Av-enue on the Upper EastSide will rise the mostdue to a lack of supply. The same is true fortownhouses and othersingle-family residences, where quality supply isalso limited. Overall, Ibelieve 2012 will seemore sales transactionsand slightly higherprices in Manhattan, with the market buoyedin part by interest ratesremaining at historiclows during this upcom-ing election year. [Interms of the] new devel-opment sales market, Ibelieve Gary Barnett’sOne57 will be a grandslam and the success sto-

ry of 2012. On the Man-hattan rental front, thevacancy rate will remainlow and rents are sure torise starting around thesecond quarter. If I wererenewing a lease rightnow I would try toextend for two years ifgiven the choice, because onceemployment numberspick up, rents will jumpeven further to recordhighs.

Adrienne Albert, CEO atthe Marketing Directors Rentals will stabilize ifnot continue to climbin value. New rentalsare averaging over $80per square foot and webelieve that figure willbe eclipsed in 2012. Be-cause there are only sixmonths of standing in-ventory in for-saleproduct, condominiumprices will substantial-ly escalate. Our for-salemarket will continueto be fueled by the lo-cal New Yorker andsupplemented by theforeign buyer through-out 2012. End loanswill be more attainable

Barbara Corcoran, founder of the Corcoran GroupThis will be the yearbuyers get tired ofwaiting. And thatalone will turn thiswhole market around.Get ready to rock androll!

“Overall, I believe 2012 will see more sales transactions and slightlyhigher prices in Manhattan, with themarket buoyed in part by interest ratesremaining at historic lows during thisupcoming election year.”ANDREW HEIBERGER

Quoted

also, helping to fuel thedemand side of the mar-ket. We believe the aver-age per square foot inManhattan will exceed$1,800 [for new condos]in 2012.

estate predictionsStuart Saft, chairman of Dewey & LeBoeuf’sglobal real estatedepartmentRents will continue torise at a ratesignificantly greaterthan [the consumerprice index], resultingin co-op and condoprices increasing by atleast 10 percent. Inter-est rates on residentialreal estate, includingmultifamily, will con-tinue at the presenthistorically low ratesthrough the end of the2012 (i.e., after thepresidential election)but will begin to rise af-ter 2012, and the avail-ability of mortgage fi-nancing will increasedue to comfort withthe New York City mar-

ket for housing. Final-ly, the euro will contin-ue to be in trouble, causing a flight to safe-ty to the U.S. andparticularly New YorkCity, so New York Cityproperties will trade ateven lower cap rates.COMPILED BY LAUREN ELKIES/REAL DEAL

Donald Trump, president of theTrump OrganizationResidential real estatewill remain similarwith a slight uptick, but the really good re-al estate will have ex-cess value.

Elizabeth Stribling, president of Stribling &AssociatesI am cautiouslyoptimistic becausedemand is high, financ-ing is easier andmortgage rates are low.High [rental prices may]prompt more people tobuy, and foreigners [will]continue to favor thesafe haven of the U.S.

and the prime locationof New York City.

Mitchell Rutter, president of Essex Capital PartnersIn 2012 we are very opti-mistic about the contin-ued growth of the rentalmarket in Brooklyn andQueens, not withstand-ing anticipated layoffs inthe finance and bankingsectors. In Manhattan, the price-per-foot being

paid for new rental proj-ects leads us to questionwhether the projectedrents necessary to justifythese projects can bemet in the short term. But over the long term, beyond 2012, the grow-ing rarity ofdevelopment sitesmeans these projects toowill be sustained.

NYC asking rentsincreaseAsking rents in NewYork City continued torise in the fourthquarter, countering thetypical seasonal decreas-es that other major citieslike Boston and Chicagoexperienced, accordingto a report released yes-terday by online rentalfirm RentJuice.
