Classical Chinese dance is one of the most demand-ing and expressive art forms in the world. Grounded in 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, classical Chinese dance entails systematic training in movements and pos-tures, as well as very difficult leaps, flips, spins and other tumbling techniques. Richly expressive, it portrays per-sonalities and feelings with unparalleled clarity, making

classical Chinese dance ideal for storytelling.

Built on traditional aesthetics, classical Chinese dance was once passed down among the people, in imperial courts and ancient plays. Over thousands of years, it was constantly refined, eventually developing into the vast and distinctly Chinese dance form we know today.

A DANCE SYSTEM TEMPERED OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS

SHEN YUNNOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE ...

S Audiences who have seen it recall the experience of a lifetime; a mo-ment so powerfully beautiful, it touches the soul.

Shen Yun presents colorful and exhilarating performances of classical Chinese dance and music. A performance by Shen Yun is a presentation of traditional Chinese culture as it once was: a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues distilled from the five millennia of Chinese civilization.

Every year, Shen Yun unveils an entirely new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores. At the core of Shen Yun’s performances is classical Chinese dance with China’s numerous ethnic and folk dance styles rounding out the evening.

In a collection of short pieces, audiences travel from the Himalayas to tropical lake-filled regions, from the leg-ends of the culture’s creation over 5,000 years ago to the story of Falun Dafa in China today, from the high-est heavens down to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom.

During a single performance, Shen Yun transports au-diences across time and space, offering a cross-cultural experience that not only entertains, but more broadly, ed-ucates and inspires. After seeing the show, one audience member marveled, “This production ... is nothing short of a miracle!”

“I come from a little dif-ferent background thanmost Republicans,” he saidat a Jan. 2 town-hall meet-ing in Newton, Iowa, where he recalled playingas a child outside the coalmines in which his grand-father toiled.

Santorum has come along way from those grittyearly days to the top tier ofthe Republican presidentialprimary race after comingin second to Mitt Romneyin the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

In one sketch during thenew season of “Port-landia,” the charactersplayed by Fred Armisen

and Carrie Brownstein de-cide to watch a singleepisode of “Battlestar Galac-tica” before they head outto a friend’s birthday party.Unable to pull themselvesaway from the TV after 45minutes, they miss the par-ty, end up devouring thefirst season, and over a fewconsecutive days, the wholeseries. Jobs are lost, bills gounpaid and they stop get-ting up to use the bath-room. At one pointBrownstein tiredly says, “I alittle bit feel like I have abladder infection, but I’mjust going to get antibioticsafter the next episode.”

This scene is typical ofthe comedic duo’s adora-tion of the absurd, and isone that could easily applyto viewers of their show.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

‘PORTLANDIA’As the comedy show returns for a second season on IFC, Fred Armisen talks about addictive

television, the importance of editing and why he likes to get out of control

The first season recently be-gan streaming on Netflix, and the second season pre-mieres Friday.

Armisen says he hasfound himself in similarlyintense viewing marathonswith shows like “Game ofThrones” and “The Wire.”

What makes the comedyhit so hard is Armisen andBrownstein’s ability to cre-ate relatable situations thatgo awry. He says the pairare able to get so ridiculousbecause almost half of theshow is improvised.

“We film so much stuff,”he says. “We could do awhole season of what we

didn’t use.” Armisen says a large por-

tion of that unused footageis he and Brownstein ruin-ing the scenes by laughinguncontrollably at what theother one has come up withon the spot. He is quick togive away the credit for thefinished product.

“We’re not part of the ed-iting process,” he explains,“because those guys are ge-niuses.”

Armisen says relinquish-ing that authority is liberat-ing because every time hewatches the edits, he findshimself saying, “Oh mygosh, I never thought thatwe wouldn’t need that.”

“That’s a really weirdpart of the process, whereyou think you’re in control, but you know it’s good thatyou’re not in control.”

“Portlandia” premieres Friday at 10 p.m. on IFC.

Brownstein, left, and Armisen will also appear live on Jan. 20

at the Bowery Ballroom as part of a “Portlandia” live show.

Real-life inspiration

‘That guydoes exist!’Armisen is probably

best known to main-

his portrayal of Presi-

characters he plays on

“Portlandia” are

heightened versions

of everyday people

and self-serious hip-

ster types (think femi-

that are so spot-on

they feel like they

must come from an

arsenal of acquain-

says: “It’s a weird

then I’ll drive around

Portland and totally ...

see guys like that. So

it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, that

Is that your final answer? It may not be the end of the world ... yet But as we

begin 2012, the year the Mayan calendar ends, we ask afew celebrities what they would do on Judgment Day

Wiz Khalifa,rapper

What is the last song

you’ll sing in

the shower?

“Save The Children” byMarvin Gaye.

What is the last movie

you’ll watch and with

whom?

“The Notebook” with Amber Rose. What is the one luxury

item you’ll bring with you

to the New World?

My laptop.Who is the one fellow

celebrity with whom you’ll

want to travel to the New

World? Amber.

Jamie Bell, actorWhat’s your last meal?

It would definitely be ameat dish. I love meat. It’sso bad, but damn, it’s prettygood. Maybe just cook awhole cow. What is the last song you’ll

sing in the shower?

Maybe “Let it Be” [by TheBeatles]. Or you could goout on somethingcompletely ironic like [theMonty Python song]“Always Look on the BrightSide of Life.”What is the last movie

you’ll watch?

I would love to saysomething really influential, about the goodness of hu-manity, but it would proba-bly be “Jurassic Park.”

Mindy Kaling,writer, producer,actress on ‘TheOffice’

What would your last

meal be?

My last meal would be proba-bly Ethiopian food, myfavorite kind of food. It’ssuper heavy and I love it.

What is the last song you’ll

sing in the shower?

“Countdown” by Beyonce. What is the last movie you

would watch and with

whom?

The last movie I would watch would be “You’ve GotMail” and I’d watch it withmy mom.One luxury item you’d bring

with you to the new world?

In the post-apocalypticalworld where it’s like CormacMcCarthy’s “The Road” andeveryone is dirty and disgust-ing, I’d bring a Judith Leiberclutch, like in my rags. One celebrity you’d want

to travel with to the new

world?

Aaron Sorkin

Adam Carolla,comedianWhat would your last

meal be?

I’d go to the busiestrestaurant, whose kitchen wasmost backed up, and then Iwould change my order threeor four times. I’d stretch it out.I’d eat lobsters raised onSnickers bars then dipped in abuttermilk substance mixedwith tempura sauce and thendeep-fried. With heroin sprin-kled on it.What is the last song you’ll

sing in the shower?

There’s two ways you can go:You can go with one of my fa-vorites like John Hiatt or ElvisCostello and hear somethingyou really want to hear. Or, abetter approach would be totake a horrible song like“Maneater” by Hall & Oatesand want to die. What is the last movie you’ll

watch and with whom?

I would pick a long movie. There’s a theme here, I wantto stretch it out. I’d watch“Goodfellas” with Joe Pesciand make sure he got drunkand have him re-enact hisscenes. I’d have Ray Liottathere, too, and make them dotheir crazy laughs for me.What is the one luxury item

you’ll bring with you to the

New World?

Wait a minute, this is stretch-ing the boundaries of reality. You can’t transport items. You’re dead. There’s no takinganything with you. METRO

It’s that time of yearwhen everyone is mak-ing resolutions — eventelevision networks.

There hasn’t been a showwith this much pre-pre-miere buzz since “Glee” —and I’m not just saying thatbecause this, too, is a music-centric series. The Bronzer Age?This just needs to be said: Is Clay Aiken always wearing foundation? Bronzer? And is that fake beardhair? Am I crazy in thinking he always looks like a gin-ger Real Doll? What is going on? OK, sorry. Tangentover. Here he is, filming last year for the new seasonof “Celebrity Apprentice,” which premieres Feb. 15.

He’s certainly not “Invisible.”

Katy Perry was reportedlyblindsided by Russell

Brand’s divorce filing, butaccording to sourcesclose to the singer there

was plenty of evidencehe was losing inter-est, says Us Weekly.“There were somany times whenhe wasn’t there,” a

source says,

offering the last night ofPerry’s tour in November asan example: “He was totallyuninterested and seemedannoyed he was there. Idon’t think he sat throughone song.” And then therewas Brand’s response to her“Saturday Night Live” host-ing stint in December. Perryreportedly begged Brand toappear in a skit on theepisode, but he declinedand stayed in L.A. instead. And after it aired? “He toldher that she wasn’t thatfunny,” the source says.“That really hurt.”

But, um, he was right? It’s hard to sit through aKaty Perry concert and shewas Nancy Kerrigan-esqueterrible on “SNL.” Now, ifonly she would hit himwith a taste of his own med-icine and tell him to buy abigger pair of pants.

No reunion for ShriverDespite hints of family togeth-erness and forgiveness over theholidays, Maria Shriver is notactually taking Arnold

Schwarzenegger back, accord-ing to People magazine. “Thereports of a reconciliation are

not true,” a source says of theestranged couple, who spentChristmas together with theirchildren. “Arnold and Mariawill always come togetherwhen it comes to supportingand loving their children.”

Saldana getting closeapparently had some truth tothem, as the pair were spottedgetting very cozy at a 1940s-themed New Year’s Eve party inBel Air, according to Us Weekly.“They were making out for 20minutes,” a source says. Andwhile they may be officiallykeeping each other company,Saldana is reportedly hesitantto let things get too serious toosoon. “They’re dating, but Zoejust left an engagement,” saysthe source. “She’s just looking

Giants quarterback EliManning has had a careeryear, but that doesn’tmean Big Blue wants torest solely on his rightarm.

Sunday’s NFC wild-cardplayoff matchup againstthe Falcons is full of story-lines — but perhaps nonebigger than the questionof who will rise up amongthe Giants’ one-dimen-sional offense and provideManning with some sem-blance of balance.

The Giants ended theregular season in an unfa-miliar role of worst rush-ing attack in the 32-teamleague.

Giants head coach TomCoughlin said he’s beenstressing all week to hisoffensive line and runningbacks to give Manning areprieve.

“I think we’re going tohave to be [balanced], but Ithink we will be,” Cough-lin said. “Hopefully, wewill run the ball betterthan we did last weekend, for example. Consistencyis the word. I’m not tryingto say good, bad or indiffer-ent. But we’ve had four or

five games in a row wherewe’ve rushed the ball forover 100 yards. I’ll look forthat to happen again.”

Manning would nevercall out a struggling team-mate, but even he knowshe needs help.

“I hope that we can runthe ball this week,” Man-ning said, delicately danc-

ing around any specificcriticism. “That’s what youwant to do, especiallywhen you get late in theseason [when] it’s cold.[And] especially if it’s nastyweather like they say wemight have. That’s whatyou want to have. Are wegoing to have to throw theball successfully? Yes, but

you have to understandthe circumstances and wehave to find a way to findcompletions, be smartwith the ball and, whenthere are opportunities, hita couple of big plays. Hope-fully we can do that.”

Ream to EPL’s Bolton?A move from MLS to the English Premier League couldbe in the works for Tim Ream, the Red Bulls centerback who has solidified himself in the national teampicture over the past season. A league source tellsMetro New York that Ream has received a“multimillion dollar offer” from Bolton, the club teamof American international Stuart Holden. METRO/KD

MLS. Tim Ream

Ream, 24, could be heading to England next year.

Scott earns $10K fine for fingerAs he attempted to clear outhis locker on Monday morn-ing, less than 24 hours afterthe Jets lost in Miami to fin-ish 8-8 and out of the play-offs, Bart Scott just wantedto make a quick exit.

Scott refused to addressthe media that trailed himand on the way out of thelocker room he gave a pho-

tographer the middle fin-ger. While flashing the ges-ture, Scott said: “Take a pic-ture of this.”

The indiscretion led to a$10,000 fine levied by theJets on Thursday morning.

A league source, talkingto Metro, said that theleague will not be finingScott further for his out-

burst. It was a team matter, the source said, and theleague won’t interfere withtheir own punishment.

Scott’s 66 tackles werehis lowest since 2004 andhe was often exploited inpass coverage. He is project-ed to earn a $4.2 milliondollar base salary from theJets in 2012. KRISTIAN DYER

In fantasy, these are the playerswe need to take note of. Theircoaches force-feed them the balland when they get it, they do

things that other mere mortals areincapable of.

Here are some guys that emerged astruly different players in 2011:

Julio down by theschoolyardJulio Jones ran a ridiculous 4.39 sec-ond 40-yard dash at the NFLcombine and has ideal size at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. In his rookieyear, he proved that he knows howto use those measurements. Jones isalready a better receiver than team-mate Roddy White, dominating de-fenses with his physicality. The con-sistency will come.

Moore for DenariusThe ability to go deep at the NFL levelis an art form. Denarius Moore showedthat he’s close to mastering it already. His ability to adjust on long balls andmake extremely tough catches issome-thing that can’t betaught.

Making it rainIf it wasn’t for Rob

Gronkowski and Jimmy

Graham, we’d be talkingabout Aaron

Hernandez as thebiggest freak at thetight end position. His skill set is sounique that the Pa-triots call revers-es and bubblescreens forhim. That’s be-cause in theopen field,Hernandezmakes defend-ers miss like awideout.

Even at the NFL level, certainguys jump off the game tape asfreaks. They are the playmak-ers, the difference-makers, theelite talents.

Julio Jones has the ability to be aTop 5 NFL wideout.

Early-season adds can

pay big dividends for the

rest of the season:

1 Brandon

Rush, SF,

GSW —

DorellWright isalready on thin ice asstarter. Rush has moreraw talent.

2 Marreese Speights, PF,

MEM —

Speightscertainlyhas the of-fensiveskills to excel whileZach Randolph (knee) isout. We’ll see if his de-fense is strong enough.

3 Gary Neal, SG, SA —

Manu Gi-nobili isout at leastsix weeksafter un-dergoing surgery on hisshooting hand. Neal’sshooting ability helps.

CLOTHING AN EMPIRETHERE’S A CHINESE SAYING: “Each dy-nasty has its own adornments,” and thus Chinese history is replete with a lavish va-riety of apparel. Every year Shen Yun cre-ates hundreds of gorgeous, hand-made garments spanning China’s dynasties, re-gions, and ethnic groups. “I saw here the best example about how fabric, clothing, and sleeves can enhance the movement and tell the story,” said famed designer Norma Kamali. With traditional garb of the Manchurians, Tibetans and Mongolians, the costumes consist of imperial dragon robes, cloud capes, ornate headdresses and vestments, warriors’ armor, and celes-tial maidens’ long silky sleeves.

PROJECTING TIME AND SPACEVIVIDLY ANIMATED backdrops, grand as they are intricate, extend the stage and transport the audience. They are so remarkably true-to-life that audiences forget where they are and journey to another place and time. Spectacular settings reflect China’s landscapes, dy-nasties, and mythology. Some scenes even transcend this world, entering a majestic paradise where fairies dance

amid the clouds or in a heavenly palace. An innovation in the world of perform-ing arts, Shen Yun’s projection designs synchronize all aspects of the stage—costumes’ colors, specific dance move-ments, props, lighting, the music of the orchestra—to create “a dream world of perfection,” as one audience member exclaimed.

Two great classical

music traditions—

to watch, and a pleasure to the ear.”

— OperaOnline

F the gong is struck to herald the beginning of the show, you know you are in for some-

thing musically memorable.

The Shen Yun Orchestra masterfully blends two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western. An-cient Chinese instruments such as the soul-stirring erhu and the delicate pipa lead the melody on top of a full orchestra of Western strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass. The Western orchestra with its energy and

grandeur, and the Chinese instruments with their distinct tones and styles, create a dra-matic new sound.

The resounding voices of bel canto so-loists are an integral part of the Shen Yun experience. Each program is heightened by several moving selections from our sing-ers. Their impassioned songs give voice to hopes that have shaped Chinese culture for centuries.
