Thanks so much to Lynn Musillami, chair of the Annual Dinner Committee and Jeff Leppert, chair of the Golf Committee for two great events. And, thanks so much to all of our sponsors for their support. We could not do these events without you! Now that the summer is in full swing, the Traffic Club has a host of events which will help you make this a great season. Kansas City Royals outing, including a special reserved picnic area dinner and right field box seats. On August 16th we will hold a golf outing at the Ravisloe Golf Club in Homewood, as well as an Executive Series luncheon featuring Ms. Bola Delano, Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Transportation. Our new website is now up and running! We have included a host of new features that should make the website more user friendly and functional for our members. Check it out! And, a giant thank you to Jeff Leppert and the Technology Committee for your efforts in developing the new website. I look forward to seeing you all in Lake Geneva. Very truly yours, Myles L. Tobin Another Successful Annual Dinner Our 105th annual dinner on Wednes- day, June 13th at the Hilton Chicago was another great success with over 800 members and guests in attendance that evening. This was the first time in over 20 years since the dinner was last held at the Hilton Hotel, which was the only hotel that was available to us since we had to move the dinner to June so as to not have our dinner the same week as the NATO Conference. Positive comments were the norm as we received warm compliments on both the dinner and our guest speaker Steve Carter, Director of Transportation Planning for Target Corporation. The Hilton did an outstanding job presenting a fabulous combination dinner, which was followed by an even more impressive 3 part dessert. Of course we would be remiss if we failed to thank a few people who were instrumental in making this dinner a success. They are Gabriel Forir, Vectora Transportation, who as Master of Ceremonies, made sure that the evening’s program went off smoothly, and Lynn Musillami, Tri-Air Transportation, who served as the chair for this year’s Annual Dinner committee. If not for their plan- ning and hard work, this dinner would not have been possible.

Finally, we would also like to thank the Retirees Committee chaired by Jim Keuck, BNSF Railway retired, for all their help. Not only were they responsible for getting the formal dinner invitations in the mail, but they also manned the regis-tration table the night of the dinner, hand-ing out tickets and assisting those who had questions regarding table seating.

great Day for a golf outing One would have to agree that you couldn’t have asked for better weather for this year’s annual dinner golf outing on June 12th at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, Illinois. Maybe moving the outing to June was a factor, but in any case over 360 golfers were on hand to enjoy a warm, sunny day which the annual dinner golf outing has not seen in a long time. In order to help move the day along, the golf committee decided to hold a “scramble” on course 1 and 3, which kept the courses from backing up. This allowed even our late tee time holders to get in at a reasonable time, and enjoy the informal BBQ buffet and open bar that was available on the patio until early that evening. Once again there were a number of on courses events and contests that helped to make the day that much more enjoyable. All in all, it was a wonderful day of golf that needs to be followed up with a note of thanks to the golf committee for all their hard work, and to the sponsors whose contributions also helped to make this such a great event. Now all the committee has to do is top this one next year. Good luck!

happy 100th birthday It’s not every day that one can boast that they are a member of a very elite

group of people, Centenarians. That’s why the Club offers our sincere congratulations to honorary member Gerald Kronblad on this historic occasion. Mr. Kronblad will

celebrate his 100th birthday on July 6th with family members and friends at the DuPage Club. According to his son Randall, Mr. Kronblad still plays poker with friends every Friday night, and enjoys his frequent crossword puzzles. He gets on the computer daily to read and send e-mails and just keep up with what’s going on in the world. He still has his own apartment and continues to enjoy his independent way of life. Mr. Kronblad has been a member of the Club for 56 years, joining in 1956 as Vice President& General Manager of the Manufacturers Junction Railway. The railway was an eleven mile line that was owned and operated by the Western Electric Company and serviced their plant in Cicero, Illinois. Mr. Kronblad later became president of the railroad, and maintained that position until 1973 when he retired and was elected an emeritus member that same year. In 1976, after 20 years as a member he was elected to honorary status and has been enjoying his retirement as an honorary member ever since. For those who would like to e-mail Mr. Kronblad a Happy Birthday greeting you can contact him at: [email protected] We’re sure he would be delighted to hear from one and all.

Journal of commerceSpecial offer reminder Last month the Education Committee announced a special reduced attendee rate will be made available for our Resident and Young Professional members who would like to attend the upcoming Journal of Commerce Inland Ports Logistics Conference, September 5-6 at the Marriott Oak Brook Hills Resort. The JOC Inland Ports Logistics Conference will illustrate to shipper organizations how utilizing rail intermodal through inland ports, as part of a North American import or export supply chain and can help achieve meaningful benefit in reducing transportation and fuel costs, reducing supply chain risk, and expanding access to capacity. The event will provide in depth information, analysis and insight into:

• How shippers can integrate rail intermodal into their North American supply chain.

• How logistics and real estate/site selection units of shipper organizations can achieve incremental supply chain benefits by more closely coordinating their activities, and how real estate decisions can positively impact how effectively rail is integrated into the supply chain.

• How exporters can gain greater access to capacity by integrating their supply chain into an inland port environment.

• How an inland port strategy can drive reductions in fuel costs and other supply chain costs at a time when transportation costs are steadily increasing.

• How collaboration among vendors and customers linked together in supply chains can benefit from an inland port-based supply chain.

• How to effectively manage inland port distribution from seaports, via transload, IPI or combination.

• How supply chain risk can be effectively mitigate through an inland port/rail intermodal strategy.

Traffic Club members now qualify for a reduced rate of $650 per conference attendee. Please note this rate only applies to current Resident and Young Professional Members who reside in the greater Chicago area. More information about the Inland Ports Logistics Conference can be found at: http://jocevents.com/index.php?section=defaulthome or by contacting the Club office 630-529-1333.

cSA is intimidating for Shippers…But it doesn’t have to be. The Traffic Club of Chicago’s Edu-cation Committee understands the new federal Compliance, Safety and Account-ability (CSA) regulations are potentially one of the most intimidating challenges any shipper has ever faced. But the Club wants to make it easier for Chicago area shippers to survive this new challenge. On Thursday, November 29, 2012, in cooperation with the Continuing Educa-tion Department of Harper College, the Traffic Club of Chicago will present a Mini-Seminar called, “CSA – What Ship-pers Need to Know”. The program will start at 9:30am with an introduction to CSA, followed by an in depth panel discussion of CSA by indus-try experts. This discussion will include:

• How CSA can inadvertently negatively impact shippers.

• What shippers need to know in order to be fully compliant with CSA regulations.

The morning panels will be followed by a luncheon presentation by TranZact Technologies President Mike Regan, a leading industry expert on the real world impact of CSA on shippers.

When: November 29, 2012.

cubs vs. New York Mets – united club outingBelow are just a few of our members and guests who joined us for our June 27th outing to Wrigley Field to see

our Cubs take on the Eastern Division New York Mets on a hot and breezy day. The day started out in the private United Club where everyone enjoyed a fabulous luncheon buffet in the Dugout dining room reserved exclusively for our members.

Then it was on to the game which turned out to be a futile one for the home team. In the beginning it was a tight game with the Cubs and Mets tied 1-1 in the second inning, but for the Cubs it was downhill from there. By the end of the fifth inning

they were losing 10-1 and by the end of the game it was a rout, with the Mets winning 17-1 over a hapless Cubs team that couldn’t seem to get out of the dugout. The only positive ending to the day were the delicious desserts that followed lunch.

MeMBership challenge 2012...looking for a few gooD MeMBersAll we ask is that each of our members tries to bring in just One New Member.

That’s all … just One New Member.

It doesn’t take much effort and we will even help you there. Below is an application form you can fax to someone you know that’s not currently a member and encourage them to become one. Better yet … just forward them the newsletter

so they can read first hand what the club has to offer. As a fellow club member you already know the many benefits available to you and a brief note from you is all that’s required. That’s all there is to it.

Thanks for your help in making 2012 another successful membership drive year!
