FERNDALE — Sometimes the sludge flies, according to Baker Septic Tank Pumping marketing manager Lisa Hanley, but with 26 years of experience in septic tank maintenance, the company is well-equipped to provide a necessary, if messy, service. In addition to pumping septic tanks in five counties, installing new septic sys-tems in Whatcom and Skagit counties, and providing licensed inspection services in Whatcom, Skagit, and Island counties, the Ferndale-based company provides portable toilets and hand-washing sta-tions for special events, agricultural fields and construction sites. Baker also services waste-processing systems on recreational vehicles. The Baker septic service area now in-cludes Point Roberts as well as Snohomish and San Juan counties. According to Baker Septic owner Jus-tin Wells, whose grandfather David Wells started the company decades ago, an oc-casional loose hose is only one of several dangers his employees might face on any given day. “Driving a commercial vehicle has its hazards,” he said. “And there are, of course, biological threats.” Wells, who has personally faced bit-ing dogs and cascading sludge, explained that in addition to bacterial contamina-tion, which calls for lots of hand washing and careful laundering of contaminated garments, there are threats such as the exposed hypodermic needles which are sometimes dropped into the company’s portable toilet units. “We do extensive safety training be-fore employees are allowed out on their own,” Wells said. This is in addition to further weekly safety meetings, where staff focus on a new topic each week. In his hazardous oc-
cupation, Wells explained, safety has to be a priority. The Baker Septic staff ranges from roughly 11 to 17 individuals according to seasonal needs. However, at its core, it is still a family affair: In addition to Justin
Wells, who owns the company along with Phil Merwin and Tom Strain, employees include the founder’s son, Mike Wells, and Mike’s wife Jennifer. Office manager Buffy Adams is in-tegral to the staff, while her sister Mandy

team as warm and welcoming. “I was their Employee of the Month in March,” the marketing manager said. “They’ve been so gracious.” While Hanley’s is a permanent position, the company has also added seasonal staff to help with a busy toi-let rental schedule. While portable toilet rentals keep Baker Septic drivers busy into the summer, septic system installation, servicing, and mainte-nance remain a mainstay for the company. “Tank pumping isn’t pretty, but it’s a recession-proof gig,” said Justin Wells. Wells said the sludge that his company removes goes to a processing facility to be dewatered, with some of it winding up as agricultural fertilizer on non-food crops. Often, a septic system inspection will result in the happy news that sludge levels are normal, bacterial action is lively, and no pumping is needed. When trouble is detect-ed, however, Wells said, an old adage applies: Better an ounce of prevention than a pound of cure. For Wells, the work of installing, inspect-ing, and maintaining septic systems is much more than just a necessary evil — it’s a way to support a healthy, local lifestyle. “The environmental impact of a septic system is much smaller than that of a sew-age system,” he said. Wells describes a septic system as a personal-scale treatment facil-ity, comparing large-scale municipal waste treatment to the agricultural model wherein Whatcom County residents eat lettuce from Texas and Mexico. “A septic system is self-sufficient, local and natural,” he said. Regardless of advances in chemical and technological processing, Wells said, the natural bacterial processes in a septic system comes out ahead. “There’s nothing that can beat good, old-fashioned soil, applied properly, to clean the waste effectively.” Baker Septic Tank Pumping has offices at 5703 3rd Ave., in Ferndale. Its phone num-bers are 360-383-0013 (Whatcom County), 360-708-4881 (Skagit County) 360-544-2040 (Island and San Juan counties) and 425-231-6115 (Snohomish County). Septic: Get dramatic effects with paint For many people, the onset of spring and summer is the ideal time to take on a home improvement project. Paint is a popular choice for those looking to freshen up their space, given that it is an easy, eco-nomical activity and a fun way to make a dramatic difference. In fact, painting tops spring home im-provement wish lists, according to the 2012 Spring Home Improvement Survey by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. With seven of 10 homeowners who are planning home improvement projects, nearly half (49 percent) cite painting as the most desired need. They say that bedrooms and bathrooms are the first targets for fresh paint (both at 29 percent), followed by liv-ing or family rooms (28 percent). “People are looking for more cost-saving ways to enhance their spaces,” said NARI chairman Paul Zuch, certified remodeler. “Some of the most dramatic transformations are projects like resurfac-ing cabinets or changing kitchen or bath-room hardware, as well as painting the in-terior or exterior of your home.” With today’s technologies at your fin-gertips, determining the right paint color is easy and anyone can be their own interior decorator.
Here are some pointers: • Choose colors like a pro using coordi-nated color collections. “It’s easy to achieve designer looks in your own home with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams,” said David Bromstad, HGTV designer. “Each of the collections represents a style to match your own, and features colors that work to-gether in any combination. The wallpaper coordinates with the colors and the exte-rior color collections highlight your home’s architecture to achieve a harmonious look room to room, inside and out.” • See your finished look without pick-ing up a brush with Sherwin-Williams’ color visualizer, where you can digitally re-paint your space, or get inspired with Chip It! (www.letschipit.com), which instantly turns any online image into a color palette using more than 1,500 colors. With the mo-bile ColorSnap app, you can turn anything that inspires you into paint colors. Capture
an image with your smartphone and you will be able to see the paint color and two complementary colors. • Liven up your living area by revamp-ing the bedroom, giving new life to an old piece of furniture or staining the deck. • Define your style. Make a statement
combining bolder paint colors with their neutral counterparts. • Use high-quality materials. Spending a little more at the outset saves money in the long run. For more tips, visit www.National-PaintingWeek.com.
Paint can brighten a room and your spirits quickly.

LYNDEN — Little remained in doubt for Howard and Maryann Vande Kieft when it came time to build and furnish their Tuscan retreat — never mind the fact that the home sits on Lynden’s Homestead golf course in a purely Northwest enclave. But since the Vande Kiefts were build-ing purposefully on a view lot, with visions of Mount Baker and the Twin Sister flood-ing the back of the home, they did twist in some definite Northwest flair to an oth-erwise completely Tuscan-influenced de-sign. “We planned it out,” Maryann said simply. The couple took a trip to Rome and other parts of Italy to obtain plenty of op-portunity to see how they could meld Tus-can design (think curves, arches, fanciful glass and glazes) into every aspect of their new 2,600-square-foot home. Howard, now retired after 48 years of working in town, and Maryann started the building process with a design by Lyn-den architect Mark Bratt. Construction via Chuck Handy, owner of Handy Homes, be-gan in May 2011. They moved into the house just last

With a Tuscan ...
The Vande Kieft's new home includes plenty of personal touches. This page: A massive stone fireplace doesn't lose the corbels on the mantel found else-where, including on bathroom cabinets and mirrors. A recessed ceiling in the master bedroom includes lighting, and the first main view of the interior of the home, the gallery, serves as far more than a glorified entryway. Opposite page: The oversized great room includes all the couple needs to host family and friends, including some fanciful lighting and decor touches and woodworking that bring Northwest materials into a Tuscan feel.

month. The couple had been searching for a view lot and when prices de-pressed, they jumped at the chance to live adjacent to the Homestead golf course. From the outside, the earth-toned home has a definite Northwest feel, but a closer inspection reveals the arches and glass touches that hint to what you will find inside. And once inside the beautifully arched glass front door, you real-ize this isn’t a typical Northwest-style home. The absence of a traditional entry tips you off right away. The extra-wide hall features a Venetian glaze and a fully curved, raised ceiling. Bratt doesn’t call it an entry, but rather a gallery, with a curved ceiling Handy pulled off easily. “Chuck’s attention to detail is a bless-ing,” Maryann said. The Vande Kiefts brought in a wool rug they found in Turkey to top the hardwood floors, art to match the paint, and some stone on the walls to break up the look. Old-world furniture (complete with a 100-year-old table from Maryann’s family) complete the home’s initial impression. “There are broad interior spaces created in this home such as the entry gallery which can be used for art features and display,” Bratt said. Off the gallery sit an office complete with rounded bovone glass doors, a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and a modern bathroom. (The grandkids love turning on the motion-activated underlighting on the vanity.) The couple knew what they wanted, from rounded cabinets de-signed by Dan Matheis of Riverside Cabinets to old-world mirrors and plenty of rust and gold everywhere. Shelley Smit, owner of Fishtrap Creek Interiors, was integral to the design of the home. “We really planned this and had fun doing it,” Maryann said.

Tuscan: With purpose To capture the views, the gallery and its three connecting rooms sit in the front of the house, leaving the master bedroom and the expansive great room to soak in the sunshine with the oversized windows facing east. The great room particularly mixes in the Northwest aesthetic. It features a mas-sive stone fireplace created by Kent Bouw-man on one wall — “It is a rustic stone look with a hearth,” Howard said — and a vaulted ceiling clad in fir and various-sized solid fir beams across the entirety of the room. “What Chuck and Mark did together with the beams, they figured out how to make wood the look of the Pacific North-west and blend it with Tuscan,” Maryann said of the curved shape. “We were sur-prised at how beautiful the wood is.” Blending two styles actually wasn’t all that tricky. “It is not difficult to mix the two styles because both are related in many ways,” Bratt said. “The use of stone and timber as building material is true in northern Italy and Europe as it is in North America. Hip roof lines and arches are also similar features. How to use those ele-ments becomes the fun. For example, the stone shape and profile and the arched timbers used in this home are more typi-cally Italian style, but the lap siding and timber are more Northwest.” The couple credits Joel Kamphouse
of Liquid Applications for matching the wood stains on the differing beams with exactness. The adjacent kitchen definitely bleeds Tuscan, right down to the custom cabinets with corbels that match the fireplace man-tel. The cabinets were done in a mixture of antique white with a mocha glaze and a wood stain, giving off the appearance that they were added over time. That look, similar to that of a small home expanding, is common in Italy. Some of the cabinets were left open, in the style of Italy. The mix of copper, bronze and yellow touches remains in the kitchen. A curved bar (both cozy and func-tional) topped with granite helps bring the kitchen and the great room together. Over the bar, fantastic wine-bottle-inspired pendants, all designed by Smit, fit the look perfectly. The Vande Kiefts tried to stay local with as many contractors as possible and even opted for American-made applianc-es when they could. The fireplace combines with a built-in bookcase to provide a comfortable feeling. Positioning the sitting area on an area rug creates a sense of separation between the kitchen, the living space and the dining room with its tremendous hickory table

and Italian pottery. Back toward the gallery, a staircase takes you up to a bonus room designed as a playroom for the grandkids (10 in all), an extra bathroom and even a small stor-age room. Off the gallery walk to the east, the master bedroom purpose-fully gobbles the remaining view frontage while offering personal touches, including a coffered ceil-ing built by Handy that includes lighting tucked inside. An oversized walk-in closet and storage space built in con-stantly ensures the room stays free of clutter. The bathroom keeps the couple clean in style with a jetted tub, stone-tiled glass shower and Tuscan-inspired design. The high-end linoleum floor can easily fool people into thinking it is stone, but without the cool-to-the-foot touch. From the curved ceiling in the gallery to the wine-bottle pen-dants, the entire home-building team “worked hard at making it blend,” using both the Pacific Northwest and Tuscan inspira-tions. And while the home blends, it also exudes the dream of the Vande Kiefts. Email Tim Newcomb at [email protected].

According to the 2011 DaVinci Roof-scapes’ Homeowners Exterior Preferences Study, 26 percent of homeowners say their home exterior color is not their dream col-or, yet they are stopped from creating the dream exterior by covenants imposed by their homeowners organization. “Basically, colors are being held hos-tage by local communities in an effort to create conformity rather than individual-ity,” says Kate Smith, chief color maven and president of Sensational Color. “While cost was also identified as a major factor in preventing people from updating their homes with their ideal col-ors, that’s less of a concern to me. Gener-ally, people can save up to make home im-provements and will aspire to make color changes. However, if they’re 100 percent restricted from making these changes by their local homeowners association, then they may never have the chance to create a home exterior that they truly love,” Smith said. The same nationwide consumer study, conducted online by Harris Interac-tive, also shows that when house hunting or designing their own home, people see the style of the home as the most atten-tion-grabbing exterior feature, followed by how the home looked on the property. One in five homeowners mentioned the fact that they were pleased to be able to have some input into the design of their
home’s exterior during the house hunting or design process. “A house’s exterior is an open palette for homeowners,” said Smith. “There’s a growing trend of looking at the house from the ‘top down’ to add color and accents that personalize the home to more fully reflect the homeowner’s personal style." In the study, homeowners who closely align their home’s exterior with their own personality cited a variety of reasons, in-cluding: • “It’s bold and different like me.” • “Having personally designed my home, I feel it reflects my likes and prefer-ences.” • “I am a contemporary person; the house is contemporary.” • “It too is old, but really stylish.” • “The exterior of my home is conser-vative in appearance, which is the same as my personality.” Homeowners also indicated in the study that the colors of their home’s exteri-or match up and reflect their personalities. “I have chosen colors that are traditional and dramatic rather than the drab beige people consider safe,” one person said. The nationwide consumer study in-dicated that homeowners in the Midwest are the most likely to feel connected to the outward appearance of their home (80 per-cent), followed by the South at 73 percent and the West at 71 percent. Homeowners
LYNDEN — Hudson Remodeling re-cently started a professional handyman service division for Whatcom County res-idents looking for reliable help with home maintenance and repair projects. Operating as a residential remodel-ing company since 1993, Hudson has built additions, renovated kitchens, up-dated bathrooms and expanded outdoor living areas for many local homeowners. Along the way, the company has received multiple awards for remodeling excel-lence, including recent recognition for owner Charlie Hudson as the Building In-dustry Association of Whatcom County’s Builder of the Year. “When putting plans into place for 2012, I decided that we already have the talent, tools and technical skill necessary to help people with handyman projects,
so expanding Hudson Remodeling’s ser-vices into that market just seemed to make sense,” he said. Handyman services are a resource for homeowners, property management companies and even real estate agents looking for help freshening up a home. Projects can include staircase and deck repairs, kitchen and bathroom fixture up-grades, countertop replacement, painting projects, tile repair, grout replacement, and even garden projects like building ar-bors and raised vegetable gardens. Tasks can be done in just a few hours or a couple of days. Hudson Remodeling is currently of-fering a special on the handyman ser-vices. Maintenance and improvement are both essential realities of home ownership. From windows and skylights to gas ranges and front doors, everything in your home will eventually need some work. But how do you know when something simply needs re-pair or merits being replaced? Of course, each situation may be as unique as the home in which it occurs — and as individual as the homeowners them-selves. A few good rules of thumb, however, do apply in most cases. When you’re considering repair or re-placement, ask yourself these questions: • How old is the malfunctioning item? • How extensive or pervasive is the prob-lem?
Repair or replace? The big question
New skylights or windows can breathe fresh life into a room.See REPAIR on C17

• Will the cost of repair approach the cost of replacement? • Which course, repair or replace, will yield the maximum energy efficiency? • How does the cost of repair measure up to the value it will provide? How does re-placement stack up using the same measure? To help you get an idea of how these rules apply, here’s what some experts have to say about home elements that frequently raise the repair/replace question:Skylights While many modern skylights are en-ergy-efficient, qualify to use the Energy Star mark and are leak-free, if you have an older, plastic model it’s probably a good idea to re-place it. Not only are these older plastic bubble-type skylights often faded and unsightly, reducing visibility, but they are also neither UV-resistant nor energy-efficient and are much more likely to leak. It’s esimated that there are still millions of those unattractive, cracked and yellowed plastic skylights out there, says the product manager of one national company. To learn more about replacement sky-lights, visit www.veluxusa.com.Windows Recent research shows that skylights and vertical windows can work well together to effectively daylight a home while contrib-uting to heating and cooling energy savings.
Like skylights, windows have vastly im-proved in energy efficiency over the past few decades. Leaky, inefficient windows can be a major source of heat loss in a home, boost-ing energy bills and decreasing the comfort level indoors. Window manufacturer Pella points to these signs that old windows need to be re-placed: • They’re difficult to open or close. • You can feel air leaking in or out around them. • Condensation or fogging occurs on or between glass panes. • You can see chipping, deterioration or water stains on the window or the wall around it. • Cleaning is a major chore and you avoid it because of the difficulty. • It’s difficult or impossible to find re-placement parts for the old windows. The Efficient Windows Collaborative (www.efficientwindows.org) site also pro-vides extensive information on selecting both windows and skylights, including fact sheets and computer simulations for typical houses using a variety of windows in a num-ber of U.S. cities.Heating, ventilation and air cooling Furnaces and air conditioning units are among the most important parts of your home’s infrastructure; they’re directly re-sponsible for the comfort level and air qual-
ity inside your home. They’re also among the more costly items to repair or replace. So how do you know when it’s time to replace part of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system? EnergyStar.gov offers these guidelines: • Your heat pump or air conditioner is older than 10 years. • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old. • Your energy bills are spiking. • Equipment needs frequent repair.
• Some rooms are too hot while others are too cold. • The HVAC system is noisy. • Your home is dusty. Replacing older HVAC systems with newer, Energy Star-qualified ones can sig-nificantly impact your heating and cooling costs, according to EnergyStar.gov. An En-ergy Star-qualified heat pump or AC unit can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs, the website says. Learn more at www.energystar.gov.

BIRCH BAY — What happens when you combine creative thinking with a piece of property of unrealized view potential? Check out a distinct home built on Salish Road, situated on Kwann Lake with views of Mount Baker, Twin Sisters, a community park and golf course. At first glance the property appeared to be an average corner lot with very little view potential, which would explain why it was overlooked for so many years. However, the owners saw an opportunity to build their dream home and worked in conjunction with CLT Architectural Design/Build to make it a reality. The goal was to design a home to capture the many views offered. As a result, the building has 30 corners in the foundation whereas a typical home has six corners re-sulting in an L-shaped box. By allowing the building to “move within the landscape,” in Telgenhoff’s words, it was able to capture views as well as create meaningful interior and exterior spaces with architectural interest. The end result is a building that blends into the landscape instead of imposing itself on the landscape. Highlights include the entry porch, a large clearstory great room and an 18-by-20-foot waterside window wall. The great room became the anchor of the design because it created a strong vertical component at the center of the home. Also on the main floor are an entry foyer that includes a two-story chimney and a see-through fireplace viewing into the dining room, and living room. Just off the great room is a large 325-square-foot professional kitchen featuring cus-tom cabinets, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The 5-by-10-foot cen-ter island was designed to entertain guests while preparing meals. A second floor loft within the great room was constructed of steel, wood and glass. It offers a 360-degree view from the clearstory windows and an upper-level fireplace,

sitting room and office. From the loft, a steel bridge leads to a deck that extends outside through the window wall as if it were floating in the air. The living room, dining room, kitchen, loft and outdoor decks and patios function as the hub of public activity in the home. Servant spaces were pushed to the rear of the home, and the private spaces were placed in secluded areas. Through thoughtful space planning, the interior space was organized in a meaningful way that allows maximiza-tion of views, light, airflow, social interaction and privacy. For the exterior, board and batten was used along with lap siding to articulate the distinct architecture of the façade. The great room façade features architectural metal siding along with a metal soffit, sill and window trim details. The roofing material was metal on slope and shed roofs and rubber membrane on the flat roof. The goal was to have exterior finishes that were low maintenance without sacrificing aesthetics. The use of color helped to emphasize the different architectural features of the home for a har-monious composition. Achieving good design starts by designing a home that fits the site and is in harmony with its surroundings. The result of good design is a home that is experienced, not just occupied, according to Telgenhoff. Thoughtful design may take a little more time and commitment, but what you get in return will pay for itself many times over. Each project, whether commercial or residential, deserves fresh eyes, fresh thought, not stock details and plans, the designer said. The last and perhaps most important in-gredient of all is a client with the willingness and commitment to work through the de-sign and construction process in collaboration with the designer. vestment. This year’s leading trends focus on blending functionality with beauty to construct a stylish and usable space that requires little maintenance. To create the best outdoor space on the block, consider these popular ideas for your home.
Post caps A big trend in decking is beautifica-tion — taking your functional space and adding stylish elements that produce vi-sual appeal. One easy way to incorporate this trend is by installing post caps. Mounted at the highest point on the railing, post caps are one of the most prominent fea-tures of any deck or patio. Deck and fence post caps like Deck-orators VersaCaps give a polished, up-scale look for your outdoor space. These one-size-fits-all caps have nested inserts that are compatible with wood, compos-ite and vinyl posts, making installation simple. They come in a variety of colors ,and many are available with a built-in solar light. These unique post embellish-ments are sure to fit any color palette and will enhance your overall outdoor design aesthetic.
Fascia corners
Corner joints can separate over time, creating unsightly gaps. If you’re looking for an easy way to spruce up your current deck, consider adding decorative fascia corners. Simple and unique, decorative fascia corners are an elegant way to adorn deck skirting and cover corner joint connec-tions. Deckorators offers two black pow-der-coated fascia corner designs — ridge and leaf — that install easily with screws. Fascia corners are an easy way to capture your own personal style while comple-menting your home’s architecture.
Lighting Incorporating lighting into your deck area is a big trend because it extends the time you are able to spend in your outdoor space. It also adds an element of safety in a visually pleasing manner. Look for solar lights to continue to be popular — you’ll find this sun-powered option on numerous outdoor items such as string lights and fountains. Recessed deck lights are another popular lighting option, perfect for stairs because they softly illuminate steps once the sun has gone down.
Multifunctional furniture Furnishing outdoor space is essential
for creating a relaxing, comfortable envi-ronment, but it is also a big investment. That’s why more people are looking for multifunctional options that provide a va-riety of benefits. For example, an outdoor sectional can serve as a large couch or be separated for multiple sitting areas. A small table serves double duty when it opens for hid-den storage. An outdoor umbrella with solar lights provides shade during the day and soft light at night for easy all-day en-tertaining.
Composite decking If it’s time to replace your whole deck, you might want to consider using com-
posite lumber decking in your new design. Composite decking continues to grow in popularity due to its low maintenance and durability. Today’s composite decking is much different than past options be-cause the designs closely mimic the natu-ral look of wood. Latitudes composite decking, for ex-ample, features a more natural-looking surface with a realistic grain pattern avail-able in a variety of colors. Plus it’s backed by a 25-year stain and fade warranty, so it’s guaranteed to look great on your home for a long time, making it a wise investment. By incorporating these top trends, you will have a great outdoor space not only this year but for many years to come.
