FLAGLER Adult & Community Education | Spring 2012

ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION / FLAGLER TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello Flagler County!Spring is here and just as the grass is growing and the flowers are blooming, it’s a great time for you to grow and bloom! Check out the abundance of classes we have to offer this Spring, and take the plunge – learn something new!

Speaking of flowers, we have a new Floral Arranging class where you can use your creativity and sense of design to create beautiful living works of art. As you look through our selection of classes, you’re sure to find something that you’ve always wanted to try – or get back to. Were you a budding artist before life got in the way? I’ve been there, and I know that once you get your hands into the clay, or pick up that paintbrush and put it to canvas, the

butterflies in your stomach will fuel the excitement in your heart! Or, have you ever dreamed of learning a musical instrument, writing your memoirs, or hitting the dance floor like you know what you’re doing? Take a class – who knows, you could be performing on America’s Got Talent, pitching your book on Amazon, or rocking moves like Jagger (or Astaire) before you know it! If you prefer your study of music and dance more cerebral, you’ll enjoy our new courses in Classical Music Appreciation and The Golden Age of Music and Dance.

Spring also brings on thoughts of Summer, and there’s no better time to get in shape before you hit the beach. If you like to work out in the great outdoors we have classes like Pole Walking, Aquatic Exercise, 5K or ½ Marathon Training, or if you’d rather hit the gym you can join Pilates, Aerobics, Tai Chi or several forms of Yoga, including a new one that will have you laughing!

And who doesn’t need to keep up with technology? We have computer classes that will help you update your skills to get a job or help you learn how to manage your photos and e-mail them to your friends or grandkids. Our class on iPhone and iPad was so popular in the Winter term that we had to add extra classes.

We don’t forget about the kids – we have plenty of fun and enriching educational activities for children of all ages. And watch for news about our Summer Camp program, the largest and most popular in Flagler County.

Adult and Community Education / Flagler Technical Institute can also help you prepare for a new career. Our career and technical education programs offer high quality, affordable training right here in Flagler County where you can earn a career certificate that will qualify you for entry into the workforce. Flagler Technical Institute is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education and we offer financial aid including Pell grants for many of our programs. Talk to a Program Manager today – call 447-4345.There’s a lot to explore, so relax, put your feet up and browse through our catalog. I’m sure you’ll find something to intrigue and delight you! Enjoy……

“I came back to school after 15 years and decided to get my GED. I wasn’t sure if I was going to see it all the way through however, I had a wonderful teacher who wouldn’t let me quit. She pushed me and refused to let me give up. If I had a bad day with my kids, she would listen and tell me they are why I’m here. The day I walked across the stage I felt on top of the world.”

New Beginnings Learning Garden

There are good things growing at the New Beginnings program! My name is Susan Warner and I am the Program Manager and Instructor for Adult Education’s New Beginnings Family Literacy Program locat-ed on the campus of Bunnell Elementary School. New Beginnings is a family literacy program designed to empower families to grow toward independence together through education. Our program was chosen to be a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Heath Literacy Grant recipient and the vegetable garden just outside our door is part of what grew as a result of our participation.

I chose to apply for this grant to enhance the parenting education of our New Begin-nings participants, and realizing the importance of obesity prevention in adults and children, we planted a garden as a hands-on project to emphasize healthy eating . Part of our program includes collaboration with a Family Nutrition Program Educator, Mrs. Krista Busey, who facilitates classes twice per month and focuses on nutrition and meals on a budget. With the grant we have been able to expand upon that and have created box gardens which are located right outside of the back door of our program. We planted and maintained those crops and once they were ready to harvest we pre-pared low cost nutritional meals with the vegetables that we harvested. The families were also given the materials and supplies to create their very own recipe books. The recipe books are prepared much like a scrapbook with a lot of thought and personal touches that they will be proud to share with others and actually use at home for future meals. In addition to our garden project, we utilized the Staying Healthy curriculum provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, which was a great benefit to New Be-ginnings participants, as shared with an ESOL class as well. The families learned about calories, fiber, chronic diseases, and where to go for low cost medical care. Our project is continuing and we will begin to plant our next crop seeds very soon. This has been a very exciting project that all of the families enjoyed and learned from and we hope to keep it going for many more families in the future.

The Golden Age Of Music & Dance

NEW The origin of this program grew out of the in-structor’s love of ballroom dancing and inten-

sive study and research as well as encounters with some ballroom greats, most notably a meeting with Frankie Manning, who may not have created lindy dancing but popularized it with his famous “air” steps. Instructors, Art and Bonnie Friedman have amassed a library of video, books, and photos that document dancing, dancers, music, musicians, com-posers and movies featuring dancing that number in the hundreds. Their library includes some ex-tremely rare film footage that dates back to the late 1800’s and some that are virtually unattainable to-day. Using their resources and knowledge, they have created this series that allows them to share this rich history of ballroom dancing and music with others.

NEW For people who are not Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and for those who

do not have family members who use American Sign Language (ASL), a com-mon use for sign language is for music. When singing, it is natural for many to want to move to music. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could incorporate those movements with signs that actually mean something? In this class the in-structor will provide the first week’s lyr-ics to “Lean on Me” and “Stand By Me.” After that students will bring in their fa-vorite song lyrics. It will be fun for the whole family.

See What The E-Bike Is All About

Attend this unique one-day workshop to discover a relatively new means of trans-portation called the E-Bike or electrically pedal assisted bicycle, designed for both recreation and as a means of alternate travel. Learn how you can convert your bicycle into an E-Bike or if you do not own a bicycle, let us help guide you on the road to choosing an E-Bike specifi-cally for your needs.

Why Ride a Pedal Assisted Electric Bike (E-Bike)?

HEALTH: An E-Bike is a great form of ex-ercise. You can ride longer, farther and have fun as you do! You won’t ever need to force yourself to get on the bike. You’ll want to! If you have physical disabilities or encumbrances, an E-Bike can mean all the difference in the world. If you want to get in shape, an E-Bike can mean feeling healthier day in and day out.

CONVENIENCE: An E-Bike is an exception-ally convenient and economical form of transportation. It’s simple and easy to ride. The E-Bike is pollution-free and qui-et. Some even fold up to take with you in the trunk of your car!

FUN! You can ride the E-Bike different ways to fit your needs. Pedal the E-Bike as a traditional bicycle, let the power “as-sist” your pedaling when you are tired, or if you just need a little extra boost, let the motor itself do all the work for you.

TENNIS

QuickStart TennisQuickStart Tennis is the new USTA format for chil-dren ages 5–10 years old. QuickStart Tennis appro-priately scales down all aspects of regulation ten-nis—including equipment, court dimensions, and scoring—so that the game becomes specifically tailored to the age and size of the child. Children “play to learn” rather than “learn to play”.

Once again, we will be teaching Tennis for chil-dren ages of 5-16 years! This sport builds physical endurance, hand-to-eye coordination and sports-manship. Our classes have been so popular that we have expanded the program to include a new Friday afternoon class at the A1A center and a very special advanced class that children must try out for and pass a rigorous skills test! This group will eventually become a competitive team and play in local tournaments. Coach Smith makes learning Tennis fun and exciting.
