Fulk Looks to Veteran Arms in 2012

All-Conference and All-Region selection Hillary Rees returns to help lead the Eagles in 2012.

After losing six players to graduation, including nearly the entire infield, Bridgewater College head softball coach has a number of positions to fill when the Eagles take to the field on February 25 against Hood College.

Fulk will look to replace the corners of the infield, along with All-Region and 2010 All-American sec-ond baseman Emily Morris at second base.

Bridgewater’s outfield also took a hit, but the Eagles return a number of players with game expe-rience from the team’s run to the ODAC Champion-ship game a season ago.

InfieldIn Bridgewater’s always talented middle infield,

the Eagles return one-half of their one-two punch from 2011 as senior Hillary Rees returns to short-stop for her final season. Rees was outstanding in 2011, hitting at a .410 clip to pace the Eagles of-fense, en route to earning NFCA all-region honors. The Mt. Crawford, Va. native led the Eagles in RBI with 33 and triples with a pair.

“Hillary is one of the best all-around shortstops to ever play at Bridgewater,” said head coach Donnie Fulk. On the corners, the Eagles will look to a pair of new faces in the upcoming season. At first base, sophomore Brea Hinegardner and junior transfer Jamie Booterbaugh are in the midst of a tight

battle for the starting position. Hinegardner saw action in just 12 games last season, but belted her first career homerun during Bridgewater’s Spring Break trip in Florida. Booterbaugh is a newcomer after spending the first two years of her career at Patrick Henry Community College.

“Brea showed a lot of promise during the fall season with the bat and is working hard on the defensive side as well. Jamie is trying to adjust to D-III softball after playing for two years at Patrick Henry Community Col-lege,” commented Fulk.

At the hot corner, junior slugger Melanie Lamb will earn an everyday role as the Eagles third baseman after platooning behind the plate and seeing time as the designated player during her first two seasons with the program. Lamb hit at a .383 clip a season ago in just 47 plate appearances but blasted three homeruns on the year. Booterbaugh could also see time at third base.

“Melanie could develop into an all-conference type player at third base before the season is over. Her bat is there, but it’s her first year playing third base, but she’s coming along well,” said Fulk.

Second base is up for grabs as well with a number of players potentially playing a game-to-game role at the position. Sophomore speedster Kasey Anderson will shift from her left field and designated player role to see action at second base after a stellar rookie season. Anderson swiped 10 bases and hit at a .342 average in 2011 as the Eagles typical leadoff hitter.

Along with Anderson, freshman Amanda Lutz and junior Heather Jenkins could also see time at second base during the 2012 season. Lutz joins the Eagles after a 20-2 senior season at Sherando High School in Stephens City, Va. and could see time at multiple infield positions. On the other hand, Jenkins will be primarily used as a pitcher, but could also see action at second base when not in the circle.

“Kasey should continue to develop as a hitter to go along with her already solid slapping and bunting abili-ties,” commented Fulk.

Behind the dish, Bridgewater returns all of its catchers from a 33-11 campaign in 2011. Senior Sarah Heretick is joined at the position by junior Leigh Lam and freshman Elizabeth McCutchen. Heretick and Lam saw a split role last season, with Heretick’s bat coming alive. The senior catcher hit at a .308 average last sea-son, while Lam hit a few points higher at a .317 clip.

S2012 Season Preview

McCutchen joins the squad after a solid career at Allegheny High School. The Selma, Va. native was an honorable mention all-region selection and was first team all-district.

“Sarah and Leigh form one of the best one-two punches in the conference. Eli (McCutchen) will continue to develop as well,” said Fulk.

OutfieldersBridgewater’s outfield in 2012 will have a few

familiar faces, but plenty of players who have seen significant action in a reserve role.

In right field, junior Aven Thomas has been a staple at the position since her freshman year. A season ago, Thomas hit at a .285 average. Thom-as and Jenkins both spent time at the position, switching roles between right field and starting pitcher. Goodman and Jenkins may also see time at the position when Thomas is in the circle.

“Aven is looking to have a breakout season in 2012,” said Fulk.

Centerfield is up for grabs after May graduate Drew Rutledge held down the position for the Eagles a sea-son ago. Junior Morgan Williams will handle the day-to-day duties in center field. Williams saw just 21 plate appearances, but was a primary situational runner for the Eagles over her first two seasons with the program.

“Morgan really stepped up during fall ball and was the leading hitter for us. She possesses great speed and a strong arm,” commented Fulk.

In left field, Bridgewater will see a mixture of players seeing action with Anderson being joined at the posi-tion by senior Ann Komara, who returns after missing the 2011 season due to injury, and freshman Maggie Kurtzuba. Anderson saw action in left field a number of times last season, splitting time with May graduate Kristen Combs. Kurtzuba comes to Bridgewater after being a first team all-district selection at Negreet (La.) High School.

“We have a lot of quality depth in left field and all of the players will battle for playing time,” said Fulk.

PitchersFulk will look to his pitchers for their veteran leadership during the 2012 season as the entire unit returns

after posting a combined 2.10 ERA last season.Jenkins and Thomas will split the primary starting role for the Eagles in 2012 after both hurlers had strong

seasons in 2011. Jenkins posted a team-high 13 wins and struck out 93 batters as she helped the Eagles to another 30-win season. Thomas also got to double digits in the wins column, racking up 11 wins while posting a 2.28 ERA.

Along with Jenkins and Thomas, senior Summer Ramsey will also see a significant role in the circle. The Fishersville, Va. native has stepped up in some key games for the Eagles during her three years with the pro-gram and earned three wins a year ago.

“Our pitching staff will be the cornerstone of our team in 2012. They all return after strong seasons last year and we expect the staff to be the team’s strong suit this season,” said Fulk.

Joining the trio of veterans will be a trio of youngsters as Lutz and freshman Ashley Runion could also be looked up to provide some innings for the Eagles in the circle.

Bridgewater opens the 2012 campaign on February 25 against Hood before travelling to Florida on March 5 for the Rebel Spring Games. The Eagles open the ODAC slate on March 22 at JMU’s Veteran’s Field when they meet up with the 2010 ODAC Champion Royals of Eastern Mennonite.

Junior pitcher Heather Jenkins returns to the fray after lead-ing the Eagles in the circle a season ago.
