(ARA) - With 10,000 Americans turn-ing 65 every day - and according torecently released research, a majorityof them expecting to live to nearly 90 -the celebration of older Americans is adeveloping trend, and more people areaspiring to live longer and better thanever before.

The latest research conducted byGallup and Robinson as part ofPfizer's Get Old initiative asked morethan 1,000 Americans 18 to 65+ yearsold how they feel about getting old.The results showed that priorities andperceptions about aging shift overtime.

Key findings of the research include: • Nearly half of those over 50 (41 per-cent) said they were "optimistic" aboutgetting old as compared with"uneasy", "angry" or "prepared" • A vast majority of those who feelaging is better than expected cite goodhealth (74 percent), wisdom (72 per-cent) and greater appreciation forfriends and family (72 percent) as the

top reasons • 51 percent of all people surveyedthink they look younger than theirage, and 40 percent think they arewiser than their age• Given a list of lifetime achievements, those 18 to 34 (45 percent) rank having$1 million first, while those over 65 (48percent) would rather see their grand-

child graduate from college "We all have one thing in common -

each day we get older. At every ageand stage of our lives, we can makechoices and take actions that will helpus live longer and better. There are somany positive role models today whoare changing how people think aboutaging," said Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall,

Pfizer's Chief MedicalOfficer. "There's a hugeopportunity to supportthe shift that's under-way. At GetOld.com,we want to hear whatpeople want and needto live better andhealthier and create aforum for dialogue onwhat it means to 'getold' today."

The Get Old initia-tive is supported bythe following leadingorganizations: EasterSeals, International

Longevity Center at ColumbiaUniversity's Mailman School of PublicHealth, Men's Health Network,National Alliance for Caregiving,National Coalition for CancerSurvivorship, National ConsumersLeague, National Family CaregiversAssociation, Patient AdvocateFoundation, Society for Women'sHealth Research, Visiting NurseAssociations of America andWomenHeart: The National Coalitionfor Women with Heart Disease.

The goal of Get Old is to amplify theconversation on aging and learn moreabout how Americans at all ages aretackling aging for themselves, theirfamily, and society. At the center of theinitiative is a first-of-its-kind onlinecommunity, GetOld.com, where peo-ple can discuss aging by sharing andviewing stories, photos, and videosabout getting old. The site providespeople the opportunity to vote on howthey feel about aging: Angry, Uneasy,Optimistic or Prepared.

(NAPS)—Medicare and SocialSecurity are the foundation of retire-ment security for millions of Americanworkers. But these vital programs face

challenges in the coming years, andthe next president and Congress couldmake decisions about them that mightaffect you.

Why arethese pro-grams soimpor-tant? Thetypicalretiree onMedicareand SocialSecurityhas anincome ofonly$20,000and mustdevotenearly 20percent ofthat forout-of-pocket

health care costs that Medicare doesn’tcover. Social Security is currently theprincipal source of income for nearlytwo-thirds of older American house-holds, and Medicare provides healthcoverage for nearly all seniors.

Many who are not yet retired arestruggling with lost pensions and sav-ings, lower home values and higherhealth care costs. They may not bethinking about Medicare and SocialSecurity today, but it is likely the guar-anteed benefits of these programs willbe critical to their health and retire-ment security.

Yet for the last year, politicians inWashington have been meeting behindclosed doors to discuss changes toMedicare and Social Security, withoutthe input of people who could beaffected by their decisions.

AARP recently launched You’veEarned a Say, a national conversationto ensure that Americans’ voices areheard in the discussion through ques-

tionnaires, community conversations, town hall meetings, online forums andother events.

You’ve Earned a Say will provideinformation about the major proposalsthat Washington has put on the table, both the pros and cons, without all thepolitical jargon and spin. Americansdeserve to have the facts, so they cantell politicians what they think shouldbe done to strengthen these programs. Making sure your voice is heard inWashington may be the best way toprotect Medicare and Social Securityfor generations to come. MostAmericans pay into these programsthroughout their working lives andhave earned the right to be heard.

To make your voice heard and learnmore about You’ve Earned a Say, go towww.earnedasay.org. Or you can call(888) OUR-AARP.

You can let your congressional repre-sentatives know about issues thatdirectly affect you.

Individuals with arthritis are oftenstuck between a rock and a hard place.Doctors want people to exercise tokeep up the range of motion in affect-ed joints. However, even some limitedmovements can cause pain and suffer-ing to those with arthritis.Furthermore, individuals with arthritismay shy away from the activities theyonce enjoyed because the pain is sim-ply too overwhelming.

Instead of simply sitting on thecouch watching television, there are anumber of different things arthritis suf-ferers can do to pass the time andreconnect with past hobbies and inter-ests. It might just take a little re-outfit-ting of the tools that are needed to par-ticipate.

Gardening is a popular pastime forpeople of all ages. But the repetitivemotions of digging and tilling as wellas gripping a multitude of tools cantake the joy out of the hobby. Peoplewith arthritis can make some changes.Raised garden beds or container gar-

dening eliminates the stooping andbending associated with traditionalgardening. With containers, individu-als can place the containers on a count-er or table and do all the work at acomfortable height.

Choosing low-maintenance plants isanother option. Plants that don'trequire as much pruning or repottingare good for those with arthritis. Also, look for tools with larger grips andhandles to be easier on arthritic hands.

Many people with arthritis find thefine-detail work they grew accustomedto in crafting is not very comfortablewith arthritis. Instead, there are manyother crafts that can be practical.

Ceramics are one craft where theactivity can also be the exercise. Usinga pottery wheel or hand-moldingdoughs and other modeling media canbe a way to stretch and work thehands and fingers. Using paintbrushesequipped with wider grips can makepainting possible.

Mural painting is another option.

Again, those with arthritis canchoose tools with wide handlesto make grasping easier. Largedesigns on walls or canvases willbe easier to handle than smallerpieces.

Cooking and baking is an artform that can be enjoyed by any-one. Furthermore, with ergonom-ic spoons, ladles and otherkitchen tools, it has never beenmore convenient or less labor-intensive to be an accomplishedhome chef.

Baking and pastry creation isone area where people can showoff creative skills. For those wholove to bake but have troublekneading and working dough, food processors, bread machinesand kitchen stand mixers cantake the work out of thoseprocesses.

Cooking is not only a rewardinghobby but also an activity that can ben-efit the household.

Having arthritis doesn't mean a per-son has to give up on the activities heor she enjoys. It merely involves a fewtweaks that can still make these hob-bies enjoyable.

(ARA) - Sixty-year-old Ester Kurzdoes a lot of things, but taking pre-scribed medicine isn't one of them. While most people her age take a pillfor one thing or another, Kurz, fromBaltimore, self-prescribes exercise forhealthy aging.

On a daily basis Kurz, who will turn61 in June, goes to the Life TimeFitness in Rockville, Md., to enjoyeverything from boot camp to yoga.

Her favorite day isMonday, she says, when she goes fromkickboxing to indoorcycling class to bootcamp. "Each year, Iseem to up the num-ber and types of rou-tines," she boasts.

Kurz's attitude iscounter to the majori-ty of her peers. Just 30percent of peoplebetween ages 45 and64 say they engage in

regular leisure-time physical activity, according to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention's 2010 NationalInterview Survey. As people get older, they move even less: 25 percent areactive between the ages 65 and 74 andonly 11 percent of those 85 and oldersay they are active.

That's a problem because studiesindicate there's a correlation betweenactivity and a lower death rate in older

adults. "Healthy aging is the ability to main-

tain your mental, physical and cellularhealth," says Jason Stella, a personaltrainer at Life Time Fitness. "Theprocess of aging is inevitable, but thechoices you make, good or bad, throughout your lifetime dictate therate at which you will age and the pos-itive or negative health affects youdevelop."

In particular, Stella says behaviorsthat sabotage healthy aging includeeating processed foods, taking toomany medications, not controllingstress and inactivity.

"I have had almost no injuries andvery few aches and pains other thanwhen I push myself too hard," Kurzsays. In addition to staying physicallyactive, Kurz is a lobbyist for a grass-roots advocacy organization, a wifeand mother of two sons, ages 19 and21, as well as a volunteer with severalorganizations.

Regular exercise and physical activi-

ty are critical to helping older adultsstay independent as they age.Strengthening bone and joint health toprotect mobility is all the motivationmost active older adults need to exer-cise.

Kurz appreciates those benefits, too,but likes the added challenges. InFebruary she competed in the LifeTime Fitness Alpha Showdown, anational competition that tests thebody's core energy systems: power, strength and endurance. Most com-petitors were much younger thanKurz. "I did not win," she says, "But Idon't think I came in last either, whichwas an achievement."

Firmly in the second half of her life,Kurz is certain she has never beenhealthier or felt stronger. Fitness is partof her health aging program, Kurz isan emphatic believer in exercise asgood medicine.

"Every checkup, my doctor asks me,'Still exercising like crazy?'" she says."And then he adds, 'keep it up.'"

Whether retired or simply an emptynester, older men and women oftenlove their increased opportunities totravel and see the world. Without kidsto cater to or college tuition to pay,men and women approaching retire-ment age, or those who have alreadypassed it by, find themselves withmore free time to take to the highwaysand skyways and experience other cul-tures.

While traveling is a great way tomake the most of one's golden years, traveling as an older adult isn't thesame as it might have been back whenyou were a carefree teenager or twen-ty-something backpacking throughEurope. Before setting out to see theworld, older travelers should considera host of factors.Documentation: Older travelers tendto travel abroad more than they dodomestically, so be sure all documenta-tion, including passports for each trav-

eler, is up-to-date. If you're travelingfor an especially long period of time,be sure your passport is valid beyondthe length of the trip. The UnitedStates Department of State also notestravelers must determine if the coun-try they plan to visit requires a visa toenter.

In addition to passports and anyvisas you might need, make sure yourdriver's licenses and auto insurancepolicies are current and will remain sothrough the trip. This is important fortravelers who plan on renting a carduring their vacation. Don't forget tobring your driver's license and proofof auto insurance (as well as contactinformation for your insurance compa-ny should an accident occur) on yourtrip.Climate & Geography: It's also impor-tant to consider geographical condi-tions before establishing any travelplans. Older men and women tend to

have morehealth issuesand mighteven be onprescriptionsthat can makeit challengingto travel tocertain areas. Before com-mitting to atrip, consultyour physi-cian about thepossibleeffects a cer-tain climatemight have on you personally. Somepeople might be sensitive to altitudeand therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations without puttingthemselves at serious risk.

When considering climate and geog-raphy, don't overlook a region's history

or likelihood of natural disasters. If agiven destination has a history of hur-ricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis, thenconsider that before making plans. It'sstill possible to enjoy such destina-tions, but you'll want to travel whensuch storms or natural disasters are

Scores of people spend their work-ing days dreaming of the momentthey are eligible for retirement. Theymay have retirement counted down tothe minutes and seconds, particularlyif they've been in a job that hasn't beenthe most enjoyable. But many peoplefind that once they retire they do not

knowwhat todo to filltheirtime.Boredomactuallymay be asideeffect ofretire-ment,and somepeopleactuallywant togo backto work.

Much of the focus when planningfor retirement concerns finances. Allother factors take a backseat. Therefore, there may be emotionalissues that arise during retirement, and retirees are not always preparedto deal with such issues. Having apost-retirement plan in place can

mean the difference between happi-ness and having a hard time adjusting, according to experts. Here are sometips that can help anyone ease into thegolden years.• Establish goals. After working foryears, the idea of setting goals canseem counterintuitive. But goals cangive life direction and have you look-ing forward to things in the future.Goals also motivate retirees to get upin the morning now that a commute towork isn't part of the daily schedule.• Donate time or money. Giving backto others, whether to the communityor to a charitable organization, can feelgood and give retirees some structure.Volunteering your time at a place cangive life some sort of purpose outsideof a job.• Start a home-based business. Justbecause you retire doesn't mean youhave to fully retire. Now may be theopportunity to start a business ventureyou have always dreamed about, whether that is something hands-on or

just serving as a consultant.• Try new things. Part of goal-settingis to add things to the list you've neverdone before, which can boost feelingsof excitement. You may discover anew interest that becomes a passion. Now that you have time to explorenew hobbies, they might prove morerewarding.• Meet with people. Part of whatmakes work fulfilling is the opportu-nity to get out of the house and inter-act with others who are not membersof your family. It's easy to fall into arut when you are not being mentallystimulated by conversation from dif-ferent people. • Realize it's alright not to loveretirement. Just because the grassseemed greener in someone else'syard, doesn't mean it always turns outto be that way. It is OK to accept thatmaybe retirement isn't entirely whatyou expected and to make changesthat can enable the experience to bebetter.

What's next after retirement?

(ARA) - Identity theft amongAmericans 50 and older is rising, according to the U.S. Department ofJustice's Bureau of Justice Statistics. In2010, more than 3.5 million householdsheaded by people 50 and older experi-

enced iden-tity theft,accordingto bureaufigures.

Identitythieves findseniorsattractivetargets fora numberof reasons, accordingto the FBI,includingfor theirfinancialstability.

Seniors are more likely to have sav-ings, own a home and have good cred-it. Fortunately, taking precautions -including monitoring one's identityand credit through products likeProtectMyID.com - can help seniors

reduce their risk of identity theft. Two types of identity theft that have

targeted seniors in the past are phonescams and medical fraud.

The FBI advises seniors to be waryof telemarketers and phone solicita-tions, since money lost through aphone call is very difficult to get back. The bureau recommends taking pre-cautions when doing business over thephone, including:• Asking for written material beforecommitting to any charitable requestor special offer. If you receive writtenmaterial, review it with someone youtrust.• Avoid dealing with companies youdon't know, and research unfamiliarcompanies through consumer agencieslike the Better Business Bureau, stateattorney general or National FraudInformation Center.• Know who you're talking to. Ask forthe person's full name, business title,

phone number, physical address, mail-ing address and business license num-ber. Verify the information before anytransactions take place.• Don't pay in advance for services, and be wary of high-pressure tacticsthat require you to act immediately inorder to receive a special price or offer.

Medical fraud is another area of par-ticular risk for seniors, who tend tohave more doctor visits, hospital tripsand prescriptions, and since Medicarecan be confusing and complicated.

It's important to protect your identi-ty by guarding Medicare and healthinsurance information, just as youwould your bank account number orSocial Security number. The FBI offersthese tips for avoiding health insur-ance fraud:• Never sign blank claim forms orgive a medical provider blanketauthorization to bill for services.• Make sure you understand what

not in season.Luggage & Wardrobe: traveling, itmight be comforting to overpackbecause it can give you the feelingyou're prepared for any situation thatmight arise. But don't pack so heavilythat your luggage becomes a nui-sance to take from place to place. Ifyou're traveling to especially tourist-friendly regions, keep in mind suchlocales often have all a traveler needsshould he or she have forgottensomething or experiences an emer-gency.

When packing your clothes for atrip, keep your wardrobe as conserva-tive as possible. Anything too flashycould draw the attention of conartists or thieves, as tourists oftenmake for easy marks. But don't forgetto pack some formal attire as well, asclothing that is too casual might makeit hard for you to gain access to cer-tain tourist destinations or restau-rants.Contact Information: While a vaca-

tion is an escape for many people, you don't want to escape from theworld entirely. Make sure loved onesback home have your itinerary andknow where you will be stayingshould an emergency occur. If travel-ing abroad where you won't have cellphone service, choose resorts orhotels with Internet access and ensurefriends or family members you willcheck in periodically via e-mail.While staying in touch might not bereminiscent of the carefree travels ofyour youth, doing so will help yourloved ones rest easy and will proveinvaluable should something unex-pected occur.

When traveling, older men andwomen should consider a host of fac-tors before making plans and alwaysmake safety a priority.

Traveling as an older adult mightrequire more caution and planningthan it does for young jetsetters, butsuch measures won't diminish the joyof your travels.

The circumstances in which a per-son finally asks for daily and uncon-ditional help from a family memberor friend can vary a great deal.Resorting to a caregiver who is closeto you requires a great deal of mentaland emotional preparation.

When the time comes to consider

having a caregiver in the home, eitherpart time or full time, you should beaware that the motivation whichpushes your children to accept thisroll will greatly influence your rela-tionship and your feelings towardsthem. So this eventuality must be dis-cussed openly and honestly withthem: do they really want to help? Isthis desire motivated by love or asense of duty? Are they ready torestrict their present way of life?

Moreover, if youdecide to go and livewith one of your chil-dren, rules governingyour life together mustnot be left to chance. Both of you must havesome private spaceadapted to personalneeds. Despite this, aperiod of adjustmentwill be necessary: it isalways a huge transitionfor seniors, who have

always lived independently, to leavetheir homes and move in with some-one else. The adjustment can alsoprove to be very complex because ofthe reversal of the parent-child rela-tionship which existed until then.

Urge your caregivers to think aboutthemselves. You are the parent soinsist that they pursue an activity justfor them. And stipulate that they takeregular vacations, even if alternativesources of care will be necessary.

(ARA) - Many Americans are in theprocess of reassessing their spendingpatterns, and boomers and seniors areno exception. Seventy-three percent ofadults over age 50 started saving moreor cutting back on spending last year, compared to 2010, according to aNovember 2011 report by the AARP.

In many cases, the new spirit of fru-gality is not necessarily born out offinancial necessity, but also out of adesire to simplify life, avoid excessiveconsumption and focus on what'sreally important - family, friends andcommunity.

If you're an adult over 50, maybeyou're exploring the hidden treasuresof your own region instead of takingexotic vacations. Maybe you're barbe-cuing with friends in the backyardinstead of going out to eat. Maybe

you're spending more time playingwith your grandkids instead of buy-ing them the latest electronic gadgets.

In short, you're trying to cut back onspending without sacrificing qualityof life. Here are five tips to help.

Examine recurring expenses. It's easyto overpay for utilities and otherrecurring expenses if you don't peri-odically review your options andmake sure you're getting the best deal. Many utility companies offer seniordiscounts, for example, but you haveto ask. Also consider a lower-cost no-contract cellphone plan.

Increase energy efficiency. Anotherway to reduce your bills is by increas-ing the energy efficiency of yourhome. You can unplug battery charg-ers when not in use, turn off appli-ances rather than leaving them in

standby mode, use energy-efficientlight bulbs and turn off the lightswhen you leave a room. If you're ableto invest a little to ensure longer-termsavings - whether through weather-proofing or upgrading aging appli-ances - you can schedule an energyaudit to find out how to get thebiggest bang for your home-improve-ment buck.

Be a smart shopper. If you're notinto clipping coupons, that's OK.There are other ways to save. Forexample, try store-brand productsrather than automatically reaching forthe brands you've always purchased -in many cases, you won't be able totell the difference. Buy in bulk if youuse large quantities of something.Watch for sales on items you purchaseregularly, but don't buy something justbecause it's on sale - if you wouldn'thave bought it otherwise, you're notsaving money. For bigger-ticket items,be sure to comparison shop to makesure you're getting the best price.

Websites such as pricegrabber.comallow you to research numerous retail-ers without leaving your home.

Take advantage of free entertain-ment. Wondering what to do thisweekend? Low-cost, or sometimesfree, options are abundant. Check theevents sections of local newspapersand websites to see what's happeningin the area - festivals, exhibits andother special events are often free, andhigh schools and colleges frequentlyhost sporting events, plays, concertsand lectures that are open to the pub-lic. Libraries are also an excellentsource of free entertainment - you cantry out new authors, artists and genreswith no risk by borrowing books, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs instead ofpurchasing them. You might evenmeet some interesting people whileyou're out and about in the communi-ty.

Reassess your gift-giving habits. Ifyou've ever found yourself rushing tothe mall to buy a last-minute gift for a

loved one'sbirthday, chances areyou've spentmore thanyou original-ly planned, settled forsomethingyou suspect-ed the recipi-ent mightend upexchanging,or avoidedthe decisionby purchas-ing a safebut impersonal gift card. However, most of us don't really need morethings. Instead, consider giving yourloved ones the gift of a shared experi-ence. If your grandson loves animals, take him to the zoo. If your sister isinto jazz, take her out for an eveningat a jazz club. Of course, you might

not end up spending less money thisway - experiences come in all priceranges - so do keep your budget inmind. The point is that instead ofwasting money on something thatmight just sit in the garage for years, you'll enjoy a meaningful experiencetogether. And that's what quality oflife is all about.
