THE WORCESTER CONSORTIUM OF COLLEGES
RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS
JOINT SERVICE COMMISSIONING CEREMONY
SATURDAY, MAY 12TH, 2012
WELCOME
Welcome to the 2012 Joint Service Commission-ing Ceremony. Today we will be commissioning 25 cadets into the United States Army, United States Navy, and United States Air Force. We are very proud of our commissionees for their dedication and commitment to both their academic degree and their completion of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. We are very fortunate to have Major General Timothy P. McHale with us to preside as the Commis-sioning Officer for today’s ceremony.
HISTORY OF ROTC
The origin of military instruction in civilian colleges dates back to 1819 when Captain Alden Partridge founded the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Northfield, Vermont. Today it is Norwich University. The United States Reserve Officer Training Corps and the Junior ROTC arose from the National Defense Act of 1916. World War I prevented the full deployment of civilian educators and military professionals working together. At the conclusion of WWI, the program was fully implemented on college campuses. In 1964, the ROTC added scholarships and expanded the Junior ROTC opportunities at high schools all across the nation.

The Army Song
First to fight for the right,
And to build the Nation’s might, And the Army Goes Rolling Along
Proud of all we have done Fighting till the battle’s won,
And the Army Goes Rolling Along
Then it’s Hi, Hi, Hey! The Army’s on its way Count off the cadence loud and strong
(TWO, THREE) For where e’er we go, you will always know
That the Army Goes Rolling Along
Marine Corps Hymn
From the halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli, We fight our country’s battles In the air, on land, and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom,
And to keep our honor clean, We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marines.
Navy Song
Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh
Farewell to college joys. We sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay! Through our last night on shore,
Drink to the foam Until we meet once more
Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.
Air Force Song
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun: Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, give 'er the gun! (Shout) GIVE 'ER THE GUN!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame, (Shout) HEY! NOTHING CAN STOP
