Contributions to MCPHS University

help to make our students’ dreams

come true. Gifts made to the Annual

Fund provide the University with

flexible financial resources that can be

used to address key operational

priorities. Reunion class gifts made by

alumni celebrating anniversary reunions

generate funding for a range of

important student-focused objectives.

Donors who make restricted gifts direct

their generous support for programs

and services, ranging from scholarships

and faculty development, to building

and renovation projects, community

service and new academic programs.

In the following pages, we honor our

donors for their financial commitment

during the past fiscal year ending June

30, and express our gratitude for their

decision to make MCPHS University a

charitable giving priority.

Please Note: While we have made

every effort to ensure the accuracy of

the following lists of donors, we

apologize in advance for any

misspellings, omissions or other errors.

Please inform us of any errors by

calling the Office of Development at

The MCPHS Pillar Society calls to mind the

six pillars that grace the façade of the

historic George Robert White Building of

the MCPHS–Boston campus. The honorary

association was founded in 2007 as a

means for MCPHS to express gratitude to

all who have made planned gifts that

already have been received or will someday

accrue to the University. These individuals

have provided a lasting legacy for

tomorrow’s generations of students by

including MCPHS in their estate plans.

Membership in this prestigious society is

open to all who provide support for

MCPHS through wills, trusts, life income

gifts, retirement plans and other planned

gift vehicles. Membership is eternal, as

long as the planned gift remains in force.

Pillar Society members make an investment

in the future greatness, continued growth

and leadership of the University. Members

include alumni, current and retired faculty

and staff and friends of MCPHS. While the

Society is relatively new, planned giving to

MCPHS is not. Bequests have helped make

substantial contributions to the University’s

growth and success, providing funds for

scholarships and classrooms, technology

and student activities as well as

professional opportunities for faculty, staff

and alumni.

Pillar Society members leave a legacy for

future generations of students, faculty and

programs. The following list honors

members of the MCPHS Pillar Society

whose estate or deferred gift

commitments demonstrate their

confidence in MCPHS as a leading

institution of higher learning devoted to

excellence in education, scholarship and

public service.

MCPHS Lifetime Benefactors are individuals whose munificent gestures represent pinnacle

charitable achievements, deeds that merit continuous recognition and honor, made on behalf of

the students of MCPHS University who benefit from such largess. Each Lifetime Benefactor's

collective charitable commitments and contributions to the MCPHS have reached or exceeded

$1 million. Their outstanding philanthropic gestures demonstrate engagement of the highest

order with the University's educational mission and vision, and provide the foundation from

which all additional charitable financial support springs.

A RICH CAREERANN MARIE NIEMYSKI DH ’69

Ann Marie Niemyski’s most prominent memories as a

Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists student include

membership in the first class taught to sit while working

with patients, not being allowed to wear pants into the

Forsyth building and filming of “The Boston Strangler”

just outside her dorm. Her manifold memories may only

be matched by the rich variety of professional experience,

which has included 20 years in private practice and 22

years in the corporate sector.

Despite a busy professional life, Ann Marie has

repeatedly demonstrated meaningful appreciation for her

Forsyth education. She makes consistent annual charitable

contributions, served as the chairperson for the $2 million

capital campaign to help fund the creation of the Esther

M. Wilkins Forsyth Dental Hygiene Clinic, represents

Forsyth alumni on the Alumni Association Board of

Directors and is a leading booster of integrating dental

hygiene into the health sciences curriculum at MCPHS.

On this point, she remarks, “Forsyth’s inclusion with other

health care professional programs elevates the standing of

dental hygiene.”

Although dental hygienists no longer have to stand while

working with patients, Ann Marie’s passion for the standing

of the dental hygiene profession is absolute. n

PREPARED FOR LIFEEDWARD J. POLEN BSP ’65

“Go to MCP and you’ll get a great education. It will

prepare you for anything in life.” For Edward J. Polen BSP

’65, advice from his father, Irving H. Polen PhG ’31 proved

predictive and some of the most valuable advice that he

ever received.

More than 50 years later, Ed Polen is grateful

that he took the advice. He is president and CEO of

EMCO Chemical Distributors, the nation’s ninth largest

chemical distributor, with more than $300 million in sales

and in excess of 500 employees. The circuitous route

to this position involved professional positions in

pharmacy preceded by many experience-building jobs

during adolescence.

Ed Polen learned about his strengths, his interests

and his talents – which all came together in chemical

distribution. “I was willing to take a risk and change jobs

because I was confident in myself. That confidence came

from my upbringing, training, education and prior jobs.”

As an MCPHS supporter, Ed compares his professional

success to the growth of the University. “My company has

grown because of diversification of our product line and

business operations… That’s what MCPHS has done.

That’s called progress, and it makes you more valuable to

your customers.”

His philanthropic interests are varied, yet clearly

intensely rewarding. “I give to a lot of charities, which is a

practice that I learned from my parents.”n

ACHIEVING DEGREES OF SUCCESSRONALD THIBOUTOT BSP ’73, MS ’75, PHD ’79 AND DIANE THIBOUTOT BSP ’78, MD

Ron and Diane Thiboutot are MCPHS family. More

precisely, Ron, Diane, son Jon and Ron’s sister Francine

are MCPHS family—alumni who collectively devoted

several dozen years in pursuit of their respective

MCPHS degrees.

"My education has allowed me to do many, many

things" noted Ron Thiboutot BSP ’73, MS ’75, PhD

’79, Chairman and CEO of Ras Therapeutics Inc., a

biotechnology company developing cancer therapies.

Diane Thiboutot BSP ’78, MD, Professor of Dermatology

and Endowed Chair, is a dermatology attending physician,

runs a laboratory and a clinical research unit and oversees

a clinical and translational science research training

program at Penn State University.

Both Ron and Diane flourished academically in a

different learning environment compared with today’s

MCPHS. Initially, Ron harbored doubts about the

University’s transformation. “After spending time with

President Monahan, I am now a true believer,” says Ron.

As consistent generous donors, the couple, along with

Jon PharmD’06, recently helped fund the new Palace

Road piazza, a student gathering place.

Ron and Diane’s support demonstrates appreciation

for their education. When Ron participated on a

“Leaders in Health Care Industry” alumni panel, he

counseled, “Learn as much as you can to prepare

yourself for whatever comes your way.” He notes that it

all harks back to, “Everything I am today I owe to MCP.

I’m thoroughly thankful.” n

A MARVELOUS FAMILY TRIBUTECAROL AND GEOFF MILLER

Tributes come in many forms; there may be none

more meaningful than to be connected with student

scholarship support. That’s why Geoff and Carol Miller,

children of Beatrice L. Miller DH ’36, honored their

mother’s 60-year dental hygiene legacy by creating

restricted and endowed scholarship funds to benefit

MCPHS Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene students.

Neither Geoff nor Carol attended MCPHS or

Forsyth. Geoff reports that they had good reason to

establish these funds in memory of their mother: “Her

positive outlook (her glass was always half full, never

half empty), her creativity and ingenuity, her smile and

of course her love of dental hygiene.”

Love indeed! Hired in 1936, Bea worked with

Dr. M. Michael Cohen until she reached 82 years

young. Although Bea took a 10-year break to raise

her family, Carol remembers, “My mother loved to

learn, attending conferences and lectures… She was

duly proud of herself, finding her ‘calling’ in life, and

what she was able to accomplish.” Carol and Geoff

concur that scholarships “honor her memory…to

‘pass forward’ her love of dental hygiene and Forsyth

to students.” n

REUNION CLASS DONORS

14

(Donors who are members of reunion classes who made gifts of any type to MCPHS University between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. Participation rate reflects combined giving of class members from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists.))

Page 9: 2012 REPORT ON GIVING · support of MCPHS. 2012 REPORT ON GIVING GIFTS RECEIVED AT MCPHS FOR THE PERIOD OF JULY 1, 2011 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2012 ABOUT THE MCPHS REPORT ON GIVINGMarie

MCPHS giving programs provide donors with flexibility to direct their contributions or to make gifts that benefit all students. Since tuition and fees cover only a portion of the cost of an MCPHS education, all students benefit from programs and services that are supported by charitable giving.

WAYS TO GIVE:

• The easiest gifts to convey include cash and marketable securities. A convenient way to make a gift using a major credit card is to visit the secure website at www.mcphs.edu, and then click on Support MCPHS. MCPHS also encourages donors to verify with either their or their spouse’s employer’s human resources or personnel offices whether the employer matches charitable contributions.

• MCPHS offers donors the opportunity to establish life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. These vehicles allow donors to simultaneously support MCPHS and receive income.

• MCPHS also encourages prospective donors to name the University as the recipient of a deferred gift, made as a bequest that reflects the donor’s wishes.

The Pillar Society is a planned-giving recognition program that welcomes into membership alumni and friends who leave gifts to the University through their wills or estate plans, or establish life income gifts with MCPHS.

MCPHS officers are ready to work with you and your financial advisors to help maximize the impact of your contribution, including tax benefits, for your investment today in the pharmacy and the health sciences professionals of tomorrow.
