2012 RCS Educators’ Conference

North Carolina’s standards are in a time of transition. This change will bring excitement for the new possibilities we will be able to cre-ate for students.

North Carolina has adopted the Common Core State Standards for K-12 English Language Arts and Mathematics. These Stan-dards raise the bar for what stu-dents should and are expected to learn. These rigorous standards provide a consistent and clear ex-pectation for each grade level and are relevant to the real world. Students will graduate from high school prepared for the future and to compete successfully in a global economy.

The New Essential Standards, developed in North Carolina, have been adopted in Science, Social Studies, Information and Technol-ogy, World Languages, Arts Edu-cation, Occupational Course of Study, Healthful Living, and Guidance. The New Essen-tial Standards are written using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT). North Carolina has chosen RBT to help move to the complex thinking expected from 21st cen-tury graduates.

As a district we must develop our local curricula by establishing dis-trict expectations regarding scope, sequence, and benchmarks for each content area. Review the pacing guides that are on the RCS Pacing Guides Google Site.

New Year, New Standards

Dear Conference Participants:

Greetings and welcome to the Third Annual RCS Conference for Educators. This annual event is a great “kick off” for our school system.

LEARN.   CONNECT.     INSPIRE.

Our theme this year is LEARN, CONNECT, & INSPIRE. As we transition to imple‐ment the Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Essential Standards I would like to challenge you to LEARN from each other, CONNECT with your col‐leagues, and INSPIRE others and your students.

Our annual conference reflects the opportunity for educators and education stake‐holders to come together to learn and share how to do more with less while accel‐erating student growth and achievement in Rockingham County.  One goal of the State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction, and Rockingham County Schools is to have a great teacher for every classroom. Building a better teaching force requires all of our educators to improve their craft around new tech‐nologies and professional practices that lead to higher student engagement. The purpose of this conference is to serve as an opportunity for educators to share best practices that create exciting and caring learning environments for students. It is also a place where thoughtful presentations and critical conversations can inspire new ideas that will rejuvenate professional learning communities to advance 21st century teaching and learning in all schools across our county.

Finally I would like each of you to renew your commitment to our students and school district.  Challenge yourself to be committed to RCS:

Rigorous implementation of Common Core and Essential Standards

Collaboration with peers to ensure a variety of instructional strategies

Student success using multiple assessments to inform my instruction

Your commitment to ALL STUDENTS‐every child, every day‐will ensure that stu‐dents from our district compete both nationally and globally.

On behalf of our Superintendent, Dr. Rodney Shotwell, and our Board of Education we thank you for participating in this wonderful professional development oppor‐tunity.  We hope this conference will motivate you as we begin the 2012‐2013 aca‐demic school year.

Thank you,

Nakia Hardy, Ed. D.

Assistant Superintendent‐K12 Curriculum and Instruction

Technology in the Classroom

Literacy Language and literacy skills are essential for people to function in today’s society. With the imple-mentation of the Common Core State Standards, there is an in-creased focus on informational texts. Literature plays an impor-tant role in school; however, in order for students to be successful in college and the workforce, stu-dents need more exposure to non-fiction across the curriculum.

The Common Core demands for literacy to be shared responsibility across content areas. In elemen-tary classrooms students should be exposed to up to 50% informa-tional text and in middle and high school that number jumps to 70% informational text.

Teachers must demonstrate spe-cific reading strategies, text fea-tures, and text structures that are necessary for students to read and understand informational text.

No matter how you look at it, technology impacts our lives, our homes, our jobs, our communities, and now, our schools. Technology allows students to acquire and apply new skills that are required in our technology-based economy and soci-ety. With laptops, tablets, eReaders, cell phones, and Chrome-books, technology integration positively impacts the classroom by supporting high-quality teaching and the learning of the curriculum.

Technology has allowed students to collaborate in new ways, re-ceive instant feedback, and connect to the world. Moreover, tech-nology allows teachers and students to learn through hands-on ac-tivities or projects that allow students to learn and immediately apply skills to develop a product that demonstrates a learning objective.

Students will develop 21st century skills such as problem solving, analyzing, synthesizing, and reflecting. By using online resources, students have current information, readily available images, sounds, and texts, and accessibility to experts in diverse fields. As teachers integrate technology more and more into their curriculum, they will make learning more relevant to their students and will grow along side of their students.

If you have a session occurring in an‐other building, you must use the cross‐walk between the two schools.   There will be signs posted and student volun‐teers available to help you find your way.

Feedback Forms

Please complete the feedback forms for the sessions you attend.  Feedback forms were distributed to you with the program.  Leave the completed feed‐back forms on the front desk in the ses‐sions you attend.  These forms will help as we plan for upcoming professional development during the 2012‐2013 school year.
