PAGE 4 NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR & RODEO

THEN: Back in 1950, what had been a dream for local farm and ranch families became a reality. The Native Sons of Canada lent their Louis Creek grounds and hall for the first fall fair which was held on Labour Day. The fall fair entry catalogue had just 12 pages, and promised: "To make your Labour Day a real holiday, a full round of entertainment during the day and evening is assured". An estimated 500 people attended that first fair. Len Johnson, the first fair manager, made the following statement 63 years ago, "For a fair to be a success, it must first be centered in a farm-ing district, and secondly, it must have the support of the people of the community."

Len's words have rung true. Fueled by outstanding vol-unteerism since its inception, the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo (NTFFR) has steadily evolved and expanded. The location has changed, and so have many of the faces, although many remain, and familiar family names continue to support the NTFFR. After 63 years the focus is the same as it was back in 1950: "A celebration of agriculture, livestock, western country living and community spirit".

TODAY the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo is in its 63rd year, and is one of the leading regional events within the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

The mission statement of the organization is: To encour-age, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture and farm living in the North Thompson Valley, with special reference to the fostering of livestock, crops, orchard crops, poultry husbandries, industrial, commercial, educational, mechanical and household arts, and rural and urban young peoples organizations, 4H competitions, livestock competi-tions, fine arts, sewing and baking, gardening, bee keeping, and volunteerism at its finest.

The NTFFRA functions with a volunteer Board of Directors along with an additional 75-100 dedicated com-munity volunteers. Facility enhancements and upgrades are in almost all instances completed by volunteers. Major upgrades such as electrical, welding, carpentry, etc., are often provided by local contractors at cost, and with much done as in-kind donations. The annual budget for the Fall Fair and Rodeo is in excess of $250,000, and to this date the NTFFRA remains debt free.

Over the past five years 10,000 - 11,000 visitors have converged on the small community of Barriere during the week of the Fall Fair and Rodeo, bringing with them an esti-mated economic impact of $525,000. Eighty-five percent of the visitors are from the Kamloops and Lower Mainland areas. More than 85 percent of the expenditures are pur-chased from local businesses.

Notably, in March of 2011 the NTFFRA embraced a vision of constructing the North Thompson Agriplex; a multi-use agricultural facility to serve the region and beyond. In less than six months, thanks to volunteers, businesses, contractors, supporters and sponsors the building was erected and able to host the 62nd Fall Fair and Rodeo. Most importantly, the community buy-in to the project was phenomenal; over $730,00 raised (including $188,000 in-kind donations) to complete phase one of the project. In 2012, phase two of the project has been funded by the BC Community Recreation Program.

The fall fair facility holds on average over 100 events annually; serving local, regional, and provincial needs. The public demonstrates a willingness to participate in activities at the facility, not just seasonally, but throughout the year; and with the addition of the North Thompson Agriplex the number of events has already started to rise significantly.

The NTFFRA recognizes, that with continued positive growth and expansion within the facility, that the direct economic growth to the community of Barriere and the sur-rounding area remains immediate and significant.

The dream that was started 63 years ago lives on today, because of unending community spirit and the hard-working dedicated volunteers who continue to make it all happen.

The legacy lives on! The dream lives on because a group of volunteers and participants work hard together each year to keep it so.

1950 - 2012 NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR AND RODEOCELEBRATES 63 YEARS

THEN AND NOW - LOOK HOW FAR WE’VE COME!

Page 5: 2012 North Thompson Fall Fair

NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR & RODEO PAGE 5

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT"I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born

not of words, but of deeds - in achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the prom-ise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years."

Impressive words written by E.M. Tiffany for the opening paragraph of the FFA Creed, and adopted by the National FFA Convention in 1930. Words that ring especially true in today's world as people are once again embracing the importance of agriculture, food safety, and food sustain-ability.

In this modern and technological era, it is easy to bliss-fully go on our merry way, finding all we need to clothe and feed our families at stores, shops, and department chain giants. But unless you live on a farm, how many of us really know where all of those items we wear, utilize, or put on the table actually come from? How are they made, how are they grown?

Part of the mission statement for the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association is, "To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture...".

In a nutshell that means our annual Fall Fair is about education – teaching the visiting public the value of agricul-ture; providing a venue where visitors can meet the families who grow the food, raise the stock, and help us to raise healthy and happy children.

To achieve this goal we annually put together a unique class on agriculture that fills three whole days with first class fun for the whole family – from the smallest to the oldest. In fact, you'll be having such a great time enjoy-ing entertainment, music, magic, laughter and thrills, that the learning part will just sneak up on you – and the great memories will last a lifetime!

We're very proud of our old time country fair, and we are especially proud of our membership, volunteers, exhibitors, and performers who bring what agriculture is really about to our fairgoers.

Most importantly though we need to say a big thank you to the people who still work the earth, raise the stock, and feed the world. Without you, we'd all be lost.

Come on down to our fair, and join us in celebrating AGRICULTURE AT ITS FINEST!

TROPHY AND KEEPER FOR BEST BALE OF HAY

DONATED BY ALBERT & MARIE PIVAWon in 2011 by Brian Gunderson

SECTION 3SECTION 3

Every event in the rodeo except the bull riding & bareback horse riding require a saddle. In the rough stock event of saddle bronc riding, riders use an association saddle, which does not have a saddle horn & the stirrups are set at a different angle than a regular riding saddle to allow the cowboy to move his legs in the required spurring motion for the event.

Chaps are leather coverings for the legs & are used almost exclusively in the rough stock events. Chaps are flashy & can help accentuate a rider's spurring motion to the judges. They provide a little extra protection during & after a ride as well. Cowboys may also use rosin on the chaps to give an extra bit of traction with their saddle in the saddle bronc riding event or with the horse or bull's back in the other rough stock events.

Protective vests are worn by many rough stock contestants, particularly in the bull riding. The vests were invented by Cody Lambert, a former National Finals Rodeo qualifier & current Director of the PBR.

Vests are made of high density foam or ballistic materials & are similar to bulletproof vests worn by police. Vests help deflect blows associated with being stepped on or kicked by bulls & horses. They also protect the cowboy while in the bucking chutes prior to the ride. Use of protective vests in rodeo has significantly reduced the number & severity of injuries to contestants.

Ropes are used for safety in the rough stock events; should a cowboy get hung up to a bucking animal, the pick-up man can rope the animal & stop him until the cowboy can free himself.

All rodeo athletes are required to wear professional rodeo attire. This includes full length pants (usually jeans), a long sleeved, button down shirt, cowboy boots & cowboy hat. Boots come in many styles. Rough stock riders often use boots with a ridge on the heel where the spur can rest. Tie down ropers, who dismount their horse in the course of their competition, often wear lace-up boots for the added support to the ankle. Helmets are acceptable exceptions to wearing a cowboy hat. Helmets are most often worn in the bull riding.

Sewing Garment Criteria:Creative Criteria1. Fabric - should work with the garment style2. Colours3. Topstitching - should highlight the overall shape4. Buttons or closures - should be either focal points or appear neutral

Technical Criteria1. Grainline - determines the drape and fit2. Seams - Pressed3. Seam Allowance- trimmed, clipped & finished4. Hems - even5. Inside - look as good as the outside6. Linings - right amount of ease and as accurate as the outer garments.

What Judges Look For In A Prize Winning Quilt

• Overall appearance: Both front and back, judges look at both sides

• Effective use of colour: Is there visual appeal? Is there original use of colour and design?

• Appropriate use of prints: Have a mix of large, medium, small prints, be careful not to overpower some prints with others.

• Bindings: Nice, even stitches should be

dispersed across the quilt. Make sure there is sufficient

quilting over the entire surface of the quilt, and that it is

balanced. Don’t leave large unfilled areas.

• Machine Quilting: Don’t overdo it. Too much detailed machine quilting obscures the pieced design and can cause quilts to “belly” or “waffle”. Bury the ends of the threads in the quilt.

• Cleanliness: No smudges, no pencil lines, no dog or cat hair, and ideally unwashed & unused.

• Construction: How well is it put together, are seams straight, do points come together? No floating seams, no pitches in seams, all pieced blocks should lay flat, make sure corners are 90 degrees, etc.

• Bulls don't charge at the colour red. They're colour blind. They charge

because they see something moving.

• Eight seconds was selected for rough stock events because the first eight sec-onds are the animal's best efforts. After that time, he tends to tire. Since half the rough stock points are based on the ani-mal, cowboys want that animal to buck

his best.

• Bronc riding rules have changed since the days when they could do anything to hold on. In the 1800's, they often

carried a quirt to urge the horse a little, and they fanned the bronc with their hat.

Now they hold on with one hand and leave the other free.

• The average bucking horse or bull works less than five minutes per year in

the arena.

• Human skin is 1-2mm thick, horsehide is 5mm, and bull hide is 7mm thick.

FARM FRESH FACTS• Until 1800, nearly 90 percent of the population was involved in food production. The Industrial Revolution dropped that figure to 40 percent in just 100 years. Today, thanks to advances in science, technology and transportation, it takes less than 2 percent of the population to produce the world's most affordable food supply.

• Hab a code in your node? Hot peppers, mustard and horseradish often break up congestion better than many cold medicines and get you breathing again without negative side effects. Capsaicin, the "hot stuff" in these common foods, chemically resembles guaifenesin the drug found in 75 per-cent of prescription and over-the-counter cough and cold remedies.

• Children who participate in school gardening projects are more likely to taste new foods and enjoy healthy fruits and vegetables.

• Mark Twain called cauliflower "cabbage with a college education." This member of the cruciferous family is available year-round and earns an "A+" for providing 100 percent of the recommended daily requirement of vitamin C. Some cabbages are so colorful they are used as borders in the garden.

• Author Richard Critchfield wrote, "Culture comes from agriculture." It's true. A system of measure-ment and mathematics was created so landowners would know how large their land was and where the boundaries were. An alphabet and system of writing was developed to keep track of who owned which bags of grain in the common warehouse. Astronomy was developed to study the seasons and create a timing system for crop production.

• One hundred years ago, a farmer could only produce one-onehundredth of what a farmer pro-duces today.

Rodeo Trivial Questions:

How did high heels come to be on cowboy boots? - The boots cowboys wear are just a result of prac-tical design. The higher, often undercut heel is to hook the bar of the stirrup when riding, helping to keep the foot secure. The pointed toe makes it easi-er to get the foot into the stirrup. The high top is to protect the lower leg from hazards when out on the range. The fancy patterns were originally unique to each person, to distinguish your boots from mine.

In professional bull riding, what do bull riders have on their boots that help them to hang on? - Spurs. In bull riding, there are special made spurs that help a rider keep his seat.

In rough stock events, men's and women's, how many seconds must a rider stay on? - men's = 8 seconds, women's = 6 seconds

What bull is widely regarded as the rankest of all time? - Bodacious; he was retired for the good of all who would ride him.

The term 'balking' means what? - An animal refuses to come out of the chute. It is rarely done by rough stock and timed event horses, but does occur.

A rider who 'misses their horse out', fails to do what in the bronc riding? - Have their spurs over the horse's shoulders coming out of the chute. If the rider misses the horse out, they are given no score.

The 'well', is a term most often used to identify a riding position in what rough stock event? - Bull riding. Most common in bull riding because bronc riders generally are positioned too far back to be in the well.

Is a rough stock rodeo a one-handed event? - Yes. A rough stock event is bull riding, saddle bronc, and bareback. All of which you must ride with only one hand, either left or right.
