What’s Inside . . . Letter From The President“OMG, I have never seen so many contestants on horses in one arena in my life!”

That seemed to be the most popular statement of the week and was expressed by Bill Allen of the State Fair, Don Treadway of AQHA, RFD TV staff and Quarter Horse News writers. The second

statement by most was, “This will be the story of the entire equine industry.”

There has never been an equine sport to gain so much growth in such a short period of time than has RSNC. Don Treadway, the Vice President of the American Quarter Horse Association, was kind enough to welcome RSNC contestants at our producer dinner and said that he reported to the AQHA Executive Board that attendance at the Battle in the Saddle was up and that the Ranch Sorting had over 6,000 teams. An Executive board member emailed back and said surely you meant 600 teams?

It was simply that unbelievable! An amazing 6,056 teams competed over the six days and with 2nd 3rd and 4th go’s there were over 7,989 runs! Thanks to the amazing 42 person staff of RSNC and many volunteers, it all flowed flawlessly which was even more amazing. There were no all-nighters and very few late nights. I could not be more proud of the dedicated team of workers that tackled this event with the determination and dedication needed to keep everyone happy and keep the show moving at the most professional level possible. It would have been so easy to have mass confusion and a total disaster with so many teams and contestants lining up to ride but the attention to detail and scheduling predictions and planning were absolutely perfect. My hat is off the entire RSNC team because you just made Ranch Sorting the sport of the future!

It was almost breath taking to walk into the Performance Arena on Tuesday and see the sea of horses and hats that were there to compete. The intensity and excitement level could be felt all week long as contestants worked their way through the crowd to take their turns in the sorting arenas. Every good run made was cheered by the crowd and it made contestants ride harder than ever before.

I ordered more cattle than originally planned to accommodate the massive growth and the cattle were superb throughout. We made the decision at the last minute to run the arenas individually rather than alternate which gained us over two hours less of competition each day. That made the difference and absorbed the overflow of teams allowing for timely finish times all week long. It took everyone willing to adjust to the challenge and more staff, but it sure paid off.

Most exciting was the growth in team count from the bottom up. Every division had increases but the biggest increase was the #1 Beginner Class. Last year we had 154 teams and this year we had 420 teams making a 272% increase. The rookie class was almost as good. When you have so many new contestants entering a sport it is a positive sign of the future of the sport. Many of those contestants will improve and move right on up the ladder to make competition bigger at all levels. Overall there were almost 50% more teams than last year!

A new year is starting, so please be sure to go invite a friend to join RSNC. It will get both you and them a free membership and will continue to add to the excitement. We had over 7,000 viewers watching the finals on our Website and we had 142 new members sign up on the RSNC Website for the first time. That put us over 16,000 members in our organization! With 16,000 of you out there each bringing in one new member, just think where we will be next year!

Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you for making Ranch Sorting shine so bright!

P.S. By very popular demand, the Turtle Races will be back next year!!!!

Special Condolences are expressed by all RSNC members to 2 of our fellow members who suffered non-competition accidents during the week of our Finals. Both Tony Gibbs and Chris Lebrecht each broke a leg that resulted in major surgeries. Their recovery will be long and slow and I would like to ask that your continued prayers and thoughts be with them. We look forward to seeing them back with our extended family of friends and sorters as soon as possible. Dave Wolfe

Ranch Sorting National Championships (RSNC) hosted the 2012 Merial RSNC National Finals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds July 3-8, 2012 in conjunction with Battle in The Saddle. This outstanding event accommodated 6,056 teams, and had payouts of $298,649 (excluding saddles

and other prizes) over 6 fun-filled days. The RSNC finals was an enormous success, broke many records, and the growth in the sport continues to exceed expectations.

RSNC Finals Proof of Our Sport’s Success & Growth

The horse show capital of the world was anything but out of sorts at the Ranch Sorting National Championships Finals. In fact, more than 6,000 teams and nearly 650 contestants competed for almost $300,000

cash plus prizes in the country’s fastest growing equine family sport. The week began with contestants of all ages arriving at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City from approximately 30 states and Canada to vie for cash, buckles, saddles, boots and hats. The energy and enthusiasm at this year’s RSNC Finals was electric. The evidence surrounded us as we meandered through the scores of horses and riders. We had the opportunity to connect with and interview many of the RSNC’s most colorful members. These cowboys and cowgirls ranged in age from 4 to 78. The most common comment made by the contestants we interviewed was that the RSNC is a great equine sport for family participation and offers equal playing grounds for everyone from beginner to professional. “FAMILY” is the buzz word that truly has made this organization what it is.

We weren’t the only ones amazed at how many RSNC members came out to play at the Finals. The proud sponsors, AQHA, OKC Fairgrounds and RFDTV were in awe the entire week at how many people were on their horses in the arena waiting for their chance to enter the sorting pen!

The best part about all these people competing against each other was the friendships that were made and the great mood of the contestants in the middle of a major competition! We have never witnessed a competition that had such a great attitude over all, from the wonderful staff of RSNC to the contestants and their families that traveled with them. In our interviews with the RSNC sponsors, we learned that they were impressed by the commitment to both family and fairness. Sponsors were equally excited by the growth of the organization which has nearly doubled each year since its start in 2007.

As professional horsemen we were impressed by the quality of horses, the commitment from producers and trainers to the sucess and safety of their students, and new found ranch sorting families. Through these producers and trainers it seems as though there is a large amount of availability to purchase quality ranch sorting horses of all levels. There were over 700 stalls reserved before the 638 contestants arrived which demonstrates that several people rode multiple horses. The producers of RSNC events across the United States have done an excelent job producing and promoting this fast growing equine sport.

The success of a major event such as the RSNC Finals is dependent on how much work is done by committed individuals behind the scenes. The RSNC staff and volunteers worked together like a finely tuned machine to ensure a smoothness and flow to this magnificent event. Our hats are off to Dave Wolfe and the RSNC team and we feel blessed to have met the people we did and be a part of such a great event! We are looking forward to working with this grand family of Ranch Sorting National Championships.

We had several opportunities to interview contestants throughout the week and we are looking forward to sharing their stories about their success and how they got to the winners circle in upcoming issues. There is no question that this spectacular event will become the catalyst for the continued explosion of the great sport of Ranch Sorting. The photos throughout this issue of the Ranch Sorter are only a taste of the excitement that was shared by all who attended.

DOUBLE R RANCH MOUNDS, OK

APRIL :: We were blessed with good weather for our first show of 2012. Fresh cattle kept 287 teams on their toes. It’s always fun seeing everyone again and making new friends as the sport continues to grow.

MAY :: May 5th & 6th was our first two day show. We were amazed when contestants from seven states arrived with a total of 569 teams. It is exciting to see how the sport is growing with lots of new faces in all classes. Claudia Hershey and Larry Newport set the bar winning several classes. Saturday night Greg and Deborah Ray cooked us up lots of good food and gospel music was provided by Terisa Miller and Milt Alexander. The show ran smoothly thanks to Jimmy Goyer, Owana Hutchins and Mike Gemmill. Rex Cooper and his OSU boys kept the cattle moving as usual. Many thanks to all of our friends and sponsors for without them our shows would not be possible.

JUNE :: It was a Bleu /Button day at the Double R Ranch! Put a three year old girl named Bleu on a three foot horse named Button and you know why sorting is the #1 equine family sport. There was nothing but smiles and cheers when this pair sorted their first cow. Bleu Hall and her mother Jennifer made it a memorable day for all. Two hundred seventy teams tuned up for the National Finals in OKC.

Yes, there is more to the Uinta Basin than sagebrush, dinosaurs and oil rigs. Just outside of Vernal in the Ashley National Forest you will find, as producer Frank Young likes to call it, “God’s Country.” Enjoy

stunning desert canyon scenery in Dry Fork Canyon at the Lazy Y Arena for the Dry Fork Team Sorting series this summer. Besides beautiful scenery and mountain air, contestants have a chance of winning a Wrangler National Finals vacation for two in Las Vegas this December. Dry Fork Team Sorting is proud to boast payouts that are on average 10% higher than other sortings and no arena fees. Each show the first place #10 Beginner sorter is awarded a beautiful Maynard Trophy Buckle. Beginning in May, Dry Fork Team Sorting has also put a new twist on their shows by introducing Psychic Saddle Sorting where, for no additional fees, contestants attempt to predict their sorting time on the correct number of cattle. Predictions are submitted to the show office before contestants make their first run of the day and whoever is the closest at the end of the series will be awarded the saddle. Dry Fork Team Sorting’s sponsor BioCare Animal Products also recognizes the closest prediction for each show and awards the “BioCare Fast-Go of the Show” to the team with the fastest time of the day. The first show of the series was held on April 28 and the second show on May 19. Dry Fork Team Sorting would like to congratulate all of its winners.

Falcon Ridge, Walden, NY

Our 2012 show season is off with a bang -- Over 240 teams at each of our first two shows. The cows were fresh and challenging all day long at both shows. This is our second year with RSNC and the growth has

been explosive! We had a great time at the Eastern Regionals in White Pine, TN. We were so proud to be part of the largest Regional Finals where many riders from our group took home saddles, prizes and money. Our current series, the 2012 Falcon Ridge Saddle Shootout, is awarding over $25,000 in Prizes and added money, including 3 Todd Jeys Saddles awarded to high point #1&2, #3&4, #5 and up. In addition, the top 3 riders from each state will compete for an Interstate Saddle at the NYS Finals. We would like to thank all of our supporters who attend our shows and travel from all over the East Coast and Canada. A big thank you to all of our youth contestants who did a great job riding on the fresh cattle. These young sorters will keep the sport alive. We look forward to an amazing season.

Klamath Falls, OR

Staebler Performance Horses first RSNC Sanctioned sorting and Clinic in Klamath Falls, Ore., was a huge success. The day started with a fun filled and informative clinic by Roger Braa from Ellensburg, Wash. Fifteen

participants learned the basics from this World Champion penner and sorter. Fun and good times were had by all. The sorting got started a little late due to the clinic, but it started with a bang in the Open with 13 teams. It was won by Bob Dunn and Morgan Flint. The Masters #10 HC had 17 teams and it was won by Danelle Markham and Dick Elliott, who travelled down from the Bend/Redmond area to take part in the first sorting held in Klamath Falls. Our largest class was the #8HC with 29 teams, and Morgan Flint stepped up again and took home the 1st place check with Tracy Orr. Bob Dunn and Tracy Orr topped the 24 team race in the #4 HC, taking home checks for $180 each. Many of the clinic participants made up the 10 teams entered in the #10 Beginner RH. It was great watching all the newcomers to the sport getting involved and showing off what they learned earlier in the day. Maria Cofer took home the $125 1st place check. Great weather and fantastic cattle were the highlight of the weekend. We were blessed with holding the sorting in the outdoor arena because the temperature was in the 80’s. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next RSNC event scheduled for July 28.

Attention RSNC Judges

R S N C J u d g e s :Congratulations! There has been AMAZING response since the RSNC Approved Judging Program began. Within the first 90 days, RSNC now has over 120 approved judges listed on the RSNC website. View the website (www.RSNC.us) to see a complete list of judges.

If you, or someone you know, would like to become a judge, know that the person has to be associated with a producer in that area. Once that association is confirmed by the producer, RSNC will send the person a judge’s test, and then the below steps will complete the process.

1. Return your completed test via fax: 970-897-2921, mail: RSNC, P.O. Box 1, Wellington, CO 80549, or email: [email protected] 2. Send in your $25 Judge’s Membership fee (only if person is not a current RSNC member), by check made to RSNC or make payment on the online store. 3. You will be notified within two weeks of your results of your test and your information will be posted on the RSNC Approved Judge’s List on the RSNC website.

Central Maine Team Penning hosted the first ever sanctioned RSNC show in the state of Maine on Sunday, July 1 at Maple Lane Farms in Charleston, Maine. The event drew a record number of riders to

the venue, and created some amazing competition in the All Levels Handicap and #8 Handicap class. One Hundred and Eighty-two teams were drawn from Canada to New Hampshire to participate in the event. Maple Lane Farms the home venue for Central Maine Team Penning offers overnight camping spaces with power hook up, indoor and outdoor stalls for horses, top quality hay, easy access to water, delicious home cooked cuisine at the Cowgirls Concessions, and many great friends to hang out with after the competition is over. Bull rides and bonfires greeted guests arriving on Saturday evening for Sunday’s RSNC show. Central Maine Team Penning Association was founded in 1995 to promote and advance authentic western style riding in the state of Maine. With the popularity of ranch sorting continuing to grow across American and Canada it was only natural for the club to continue to grow by becoming eligible to host sanctioned RSNC events. Central Maine Team Penning invites you to join us for our next RSNC at our Northeast Challenge on August 5th and September 30. Money will be added at all events. Learn more about attending an RSNC event with Central Maine Team Penning at www.cmtpa.com.
