In 1898, Miles College was founded by the Colored Method-ist Episcopal Church, now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (C.M.E.) and chartered by the State of Alabama in 1905 as Miles Memorial College to educate African-Amer-ican young people. The college is still supported by and af-fi liated with the CME church, although the faculty/staff and student body represent many religions and cultures, national and international. For over 100 years of survival in a diffi cult environment, Miles College has held steadfast in its goal of providing a quality college education while challenging and molding the minds of future leaders. During our centennial celebration, we observed our rich heritage as Metropolitan Birmingham’s only senior Historically Black College and the impact it has made in the lives of more than 8,000 alumni of Miles College including two mayors of Birmingham, judges, physicians, business leaders, legislators and teachers.

The College is a fully accredited member of the Southern As-sociation of Colleges and Schools for the awarding of bacca-

laureate degrees, and has been a member of the United Negro College Fund since 1972.

Miles College is physically located within the city limits of Fairfi eld, Alabama and is just two blocks from the western-most city limit of Birmingham. Throughout its history, Miles has maintained and continues to maintain an ‘open’ admissions policy that invites all students with a high school education who demonstrate the potential for and commitment to earning a baccalaureate degree.

While many smaller colleges have faced declining enrollment, Miles College has been ranked as the fastest growing United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member in the nation. The geographic diversity among our students: 36% of our fi rst time students are residents of Alabama, 14% from Georgia, 7% from each of Illinois and Florida, 6% from California and the remaining 30% from 27 additional states.

Alumni of Miles College number 5,200 in the state of Alabama and 4,600 of those live in greater Birmingham contributing to its progress as leading educators, preachers, business executives, entrepreneurs, politicians and community leaders. The mobility of our alumni is evidenced by the growing demographic diversity of our students and leads to the belief that the impact of a Miles College education is widening the scope of enriched contributions throughout society. We are proud to continue a long standing tradition to educate students who otherwise could not attend college because of their lack of academic preparation, test scores or their lack of funds while also providing an honors curriculum for academically gifted students.

Miles offers Bachelor’s Degree Programs with majors in accounting, biology, business administration, Computer Information Sciences, business management, chemistry, chemistry education, communications, criminal justice elementary, English, lan-guage arts, education, mathematics, mathematics education, political science, social science education, environmental science management , and social work. In addition, courses in art, French, Spanish, philosophy, religion, dance, drama, economics, and history are also offered. Graduates who complete approved teacher education programs qualify for the State of Alabama Class “B” Professional Certifi cate in elementary education.

George T. French, Jr. is profi cient in the disciplines of Political Science, Law, and Higher Education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with an empha-sis in Policy Analysis from the University of Louisville. He was competitively accepted into the nationally ranked University of Richmond Law School, where he matric-ulated on an academic scholarship for two years before being recruited by then Miles College President, Albert Sloan, to reposition Miles College as the Director of De-velopment. He completed his fi nal year of law school at Miles School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate. He is currently ABD at Jackson State University for the PhD., where he is completing his dissertation on the topic of 21st century challenges in higher education and the use of transformational and transactional leadership styles as solutions.

He is well published, to include having co-authored the book Miles College: The First Hundred Years which chronicles the history of the College, and as well as hav-ing authored the article Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Cultivating Global Citizenship in the land-mark book, The State of America’s Black Colleges.

President French is proud to have recently completed the $30 million “Miles Ahead” Campaign, with gifts and pledges exceeding $42.4 million, as well as the acquisi-tion of the former Lloyd Noland Hospital Campus - this acquisition more than doubled the land size of the col-lege. The Board of Trustees recently approved a $20 mil-lion Capital Improvement Program, which will enhance the beauty and capacity of the campus with a new student recreation and dining center, welcome and admissions center and 204-bed residence hall. Construction is set to begin in the fall and conclude by July 2013.

French is proud to note that within the last year, despite the worst economic climate in decades, Miles College was fortunate to have liquidated all debt on the North Campus purchase, as well as the $1.5 million demolition costs for site preparation while retaining AAA credit ratings from Moody’s and Dunn and Bradstreet. Also of note, due to aggressive fund-raising and other revenue-generating ini-tiatives, French has witnessed the operating budget grow from $30 million in 2006 to nearly $50 million today. With over 1700 students, 300 faculty and staff and over 6,000 alumni, Miles is stronger than at any point since her founding in 1898. The Board of Trustees acknowledged this position, and recently extended to President French a fi ve-year contract to assure continuity of leadership and resolve of vision.

President French is married to Joyce Parker French, a 2001 Miles graduate and teacher in the Jefferson County School System; and is the father of LaShelle, George III and Jasmine.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) was founded in 1913 and today 90 years later, the conference fl ies high above the rest as one of the nation’s most viable forces in intercollegiate athletics.

On December 30, 1913, representatives of the following in-stitutions met at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia to consider the regulations of intercollegiate athletics among the black colleges in the southeast: Alabama State University, At-lanta University, Clark Atlanta, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, Talladega College and Tuskegee University. The representatives formed a permanent organization (The Southeastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) which has had a continuous history to the present. In 1929, they changed the name of this organization to The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In 1929, the conference experienced its fi rst break in member-ship. Five institutions (Talladega, Fisk, Morehouse, Knoxville and Atlanta University) withdrew and formed the Collegiate Athletic Conference. On December 13-14, 1929, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Collegiate Athletic Conference mutually agreed to reunite and form the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Two institutions have held continuous membership in the con-ference: Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and Tuskegee University. Other institutions which have at one time or another been members are: Alabama A&M University (1947-1997), Alabama State University (1913-1975), Allen University, Benedict College, Bethune-Cookman University (1950-1979), Edward Waters College, Fisk University, Flor-ida A&M University (1926-1978), Jackson State University, Knoxville College, Morris Brown College (1913-1999), Rust College, Savannah State University (1969-1999), South Caro-lina State University (1939-1970), Stillman College, Talladega College, Tennessee State University (1926-1939) and Xavier University.

The present membership is composed of thirteen different in-stitutions in fi ve states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee): Albany State University, Benedict College, Clafl in University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Val-ley State University, Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Paine College, Stillman College and Tuskegee University.

SIAC teams and its athletes are known for being staunch com-petitors and for excelling on the national level. The conference as a whole has claimed over 50 team and individual national championships. In 1978, Florida A&M became the fi rst black college to win the NCAA Division I-AA National Football Championship as they defeated Massachusetts 35-28 in the fi nals. The SIAC also has over 300 former and current profes-sional football players.

Some retired NFL players who played in the SIAC: Hall of Famers John Stallworth of Alabama A&M, David “Deacon” Jones of South Carolina State and Larry Little of Bethune-Cookman. Other SIAC NFL greats include Rayfi eld Wright (Fort Valley State), Jack McClarien (Bethune Cookman), Bob Hayes (Florida A&M), Alfred Jenkins (Morris Brown), John Gilliam (South Carolina State) and Oliver Ross (Alabama A&M).

Additionally, SIAC Athletes who went pro include All-Pros Greg Lloyd who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers (Fort Valley State) and Shannon Sharpe of the Denver Broncos (Savannah State) as well as Anthony Abrams of the Washington Redskins (Clark Atlanta), Eddie Anderson of the Los Angeles Raiders (Albany State), Howard Ballard of the Seattle Seahawks (Ala-bama A&M), Charles Evans of the Minnesota Vikings (Clark Atlanta), Fred Lane of the Carolina Panthers (Lane), Dan Land of the Oakland Raiders (Albany State), Fred Lester of the New York Jets (Alabama A&M), Joe Patton of the Washington Redskins (Alabama A&M), Barry Wagner of the Indianapolis Colts (Alabama A&M), Tyrone Poole of the Carolina Panthers (Fort Valley) and Roosevelt Blackmon of the Green Bay Pack-ers (Morris Brown) and Jacoby Jones of the Baltimore Ravens (Lane).

The SIAC is also home to football coaching legends, Col-lege Football Hall of Famer Alonzo Smith “Jake” Gaither and Cleveland Leigh “Major” Abbott. Gaither won 203 football games while only losing 36 and tying four. He guided Flor-ida A&M to six black college national championships and his Rattlers won the SIAC Championship 22 of the 25 years he coached college football. Cleve Abbott coached all sports at Tuskegee in 1923, and he served there continuously from 1923 to 1955. He won eleven SIAC football championships and seven black college football national championships. Ab-bott had a total of six undefeated seasons, and his Tigers went 46 consecutive games without a loss in the mid 1920s. From 1936-56, Abbott’s track teams at Tuskegee participated in 36 national AAU championships and won 25.

Two of the fi rst four blacks selected to play in the NBA were from the SIAC. Some of the former stars who en-joyed success in the NBA include the Jones brothers - Caldwell, Charles, Major and Wilbert of Albany State, Clemon Johnson of Florida A&M and Harold Ellis of Morehouse. On the coaching side the late Ed Adams coached at Tuskegee and during his 23-year span, he won 645 games and only lost 153 for a .811 winning percent-age. Adams was a member of the 1934 Tuskegee team that won the fi rst SIAC Basketball Tournament Champi-onship and he was the fi rst black basketball coach to win 500 games. Also, current Temple University Head Coach John Chaney is an SIAC alumnus. Chaney was one of the SIAC’s outstanding players in the late 1950s at Bethune-Cookman.

The fi rst black female to win a gold medal in any Olym-pic Sport, Alice Coachman, came from the SIAC. Coach-man won an Olympic gold medal in the high jump at the 1948 Olympic Games in London with a jump of 5’6-1/8”. She also won the AAU high jump title for 10 consecu-tive years. Other SIAC Olympic Gold Medalists include Catherine Hardy of Fort Valley State (1st place in the 400 meter relay in 1952); Mildred McDaniel of Tuskeg-ee (1st place in the high jump in 1956); Bob Hayes of Florida A&M (1st place in the 100 meter dash in 1964); Edwin Moses of Morehouse (1st place in the 400 meter hurdles in 1976 and 1984) who went 10 years without a loss in hurdle competition; Dannette Young (1st place in the 400 meter relay in 1988). The SIAC has also had an Olympic track coach at the 1992 games, Tuskegee Uni-versity graduate Barbara Jacket. Another SIAC track and fi eld standout is Evelyn Lawler. She is also a graduate of Tuskegee University and won a gold medal at the Pan American Games. Lawler’s other claim to fame lies with her offspring. Lawler is the mother of Olympic gold med-alist Carl Lewis.

In 1957, Althea Gibson of Florida A&M became the fi rst black to win the singles title at Wimbledon, and she is a member of the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame.

The SIAC also has had its share of success on the base-ball diamond, which includes a World Series MVP. Donn Clendenon of Morehouse was the MVP of the 1969 World Series when he played with the New York Mets. Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs and Vince Coleman of the St. Louis Cardinals played at Florida A&M. Other A&M Rattlers that made it to the big show include Greg Cole-man and Bill Lucas. After concluding his major league baseball career, Lucas became the fi rst black general manager in baseball with the Atlanta Braves in 1978.

The SIAC is also home to both the longest running ri-valry and the winningest team in black college football. Morehouse and Tuskegee have been doing battle since 1902 and will hit the fi eld for the 103rd time in the 2012 season. Tuskegee will be celebrating its 119th season this fall and they have amassed over 630 victories - fi rst among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The SIAC is a member of the National Collegiate Athlet-ic Association (NCAA) and participates at the Division II level. On an annual basis, the SIAC sponsors seven men’s championships (baseball, basketball, cross coun-try, football, golf, tennis and outdoor track and fi eld) and six women’s championships (basketball, cross country, outdoor track & fi eld, softball, tennis and volleyball).

PURPLE MARCHING MACHINEMr. Iva “Bossman” Williams started the Miles College Band Program in 1949 with thirty-fi ve members. Mr. Williams was a graduate of Alabama A&M College in Normal, Alabama. The musical organization consisted of: a marching band, which performed at football games and parades; the Col-legians, which performed at dances and other social events; and the Concert Band, which gave Campus concerts. Mr. Williams served as Band Director at Miles College until his retirement in 1970.

Mr. Joe Terrell assumed the position as band Director from 1970 until 1975, when the College Administration discontin-ued the football program. Although the football program was later reinstated, the band program remained dormant from 1975 until 1996. Attempts were made to reestablish the band program during that time with a local high school band direc-tor serving part-time.

In July of 1996, Mr. Arthur Means, Jr. came to Miles College with thirty seven years of experience as a high school band director. Mr. Means was faced with the challenge of building a quality band for the fi rst football game in August of 1996. The task was monumental, but the goal was achieved.

In 1996, the band performed for President William “Bill” Clinton’s Campaign Rally at Birmingham Southern College. The “Purple Marching Machine” has received rave reviews for its half-time performances, and was selected to perform during half-time at the Inaugural Pioneer Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Band membership has grown to over 200 members. One of the largest and most active organizations on campus, the “Purple Marching Machine” performs for more than 100,000 people annually, and provides the spirit, pride, and enthusi-asm that are a valuable part of Miles College. The Band’s high-energy approach to football entertainment, combin-ing exciting drills, dynamic dance routines with the quality playing of sizzling arrangements, creates excitement at every performance.

The “Purple Marching Machine” has performed as an exhibi-tion band for many Marching Band Festivals, and in October 2000, performed in Atlanta, Georgia in the fi rst Historically Black Colleges and Universities Band Extravaganza. The “Purple Marching Machine” performed in the 2002 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. When you think of music, many things can come to mind and in the case of this person contributing their time to the constant positive infl uence on students, music is their life

fulfi lled. Plato’s quote states it best the character of this indi-vidual; “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, fi ght to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”

PURPLE MARCHING MACHINE

Mr. James N. Merriweather, Jr., is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Alabama State University with a B.S. degree and a M.S. degree in music. His parents had al-ways stressed the importance and the signifi cance that having a quality education. Because of this early interest, Mr. Mer-riweather follows his own objective that states that he “seeks the opportunity in an organization that affords the develop-ment of students, staff and an upward movement fostering and facilitating the art of music.”

Mr. Merriweather was motivated to love music at an early age beginning in elementary school. He taught instrumental music in the public school system, the college and university level for over 30 years; these includeed: Kingston Elementary, Woodlawn High and Ensley High schools. Mr. Merriweather also served his country as a member of the 313th Army Reserve band for over twenty-two and a half years where he served as staff sergeant; he was in charge of the jazz band and other performing ensembles. While in the 313th Army band, he had the very fortunate opportunity to perform for General Colin Powell and other distinguished dignitaries.

In 2010, Mr. Merriweather established the Preservation Jazz Band, Inc., which he is a member of as well; he also serves an active member of the Alabama Band Association. In his extra time as a musical connoisseur, he plays for First Baptist Church of Fairfi eld, Alabama. He is also a life member of Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity, Inc., which serves a s a helpmate to college-level bands and as well as Alpha Phi Alpha frater-nity, Inc.

All in all, Mr. James N. Merriweather is a ‘musical luminary’ and is a vital element to his newest endeavor as head band director for Miles College. Visions and ideas are abounding within the capable and brilliant mind of Mr. Merriweather whose fi rm belief in hard work, dedication, practice, and perseverance will pay off in whatever you do. The future of the Purple Marching Machine and other supplementary music programs will be greatly enhanced by Mr. Merriweather who agrees that: “After silence, that which comes nearest to ex-pressing the inexpressible is music” (Aldous Huxley).
