| Convocation 20122
Many congratulations on your achievement! Your graduation today
from The University of British Columbia signals an important milestone
in your personal lives and the lives of those who have supported you
in your educational efforts. In achieving this significant goal, you have
demonstrated the commitment, creativity, and talent you will need to
succeed in your chosen career. The entire UBC community applauds
you on your accomplishments and celebrates with you the importance
of this momentous occasion.
You are the leaders of tomorrow — you will chart the course for the
next generation of writers, artists, business and health professionals,
engineers, lawyers, humanists, scientists and teachers. Wherever you
choose to make your contribution, you will shape society’s actions and
exert a powerful influence on the coming generations. As you prepare
to assume these roles, I hope you will remember the critical role that
The University of British Columbia has played in your preparation…that
you will remember how much you have learned at your alma mater. You
will use that knowledge to find solutions to some of our most pressing
problems. And by so doing, you will ensure that the values we cherish
as Canadians are preserved and advanced.
Higher education today is as much about collaboration as it is about
individual learning, and over the course of your studies here you will
have discovered the value of working collaboratively, of being part
of a “team.” Whether in sports or in a profession, teamwork directs
individual abilities towards meeting objectives successfully by pooling
everyone’s knowledge and skills. This principle will be key to your
success in your chosen career; as you move from the classroom into
the workplace, you will take with you an understanding of the power of
teamwork to overcome all obstacles and achieve any goal.
If this seems an overly optimistic prospect, think about how far you
have already come, how much you have grown, and what you are part
of. As students, and now as graduates, you are valued members of our
vibrant UBC community. I invite you to maintain your relationship with
the university to which you have already dedicated so much time, hard
work, and energy. With 260,000 graduates spread over 120 countries,
the Alumni Association is an invaluable resource for you as you embark
on your career. I urge you to take advantage of and contribute to this
extraordinary community of alumni who began their professional lives
at UBC, and who form a network that stretches around the world and
crosses all disciplines.
Graduation day is an opportunity for you to reflect on the past and look
ahead to the future. This event may well signal a significant change
of direction in your life. Whatever direction you choose to take, the
knowledge and skills that you have developed here will stand you in
good stead, not only in your professional life but also as a contributing
member of society. Wherever you may find yourself in the years to
come, I hope you will remember your time at UBC with pleasure, and
that you will be proud of your association with one of the world’s great
universities.
Finally, I wish to extend warmest congratulations to the 76 Japanese
Canadian honourary degree recipients who suffered through blind
injustice in the dark days of World War Two. We take inordinate
pleasure and pride in celebrating your contributions as citizens of
Canada and in officially welcoming you as alumni. It is my sincere hope
that your long overdue graduation day is a particularly joyous occasion
for you and your families and that, like all alumni, you will cherish the
knowledge that UBC is, and will forever be, your university.
Tuum est!

Message from the Chancellor
Convocation 2012 | 3
In the aftermath of the bombing of Pearl Harbour, 22,000 Japanese-
Canadians were forcibly removed from their homes and communities
and interned in prison camps for the duration of World War II. Seventy-
six of them were UBC students. Their studies were cut short and their
graduation day taken from them by a University that bowed to racism
and fear, and failed to live up to its own vision.
The internment irrevocably altered the course of these students’ lives,
and because of family or financial circumstances, few of them were able
to complete their studies, even after the end of the war. Seventy years
later, these students and their family members stand side by side with
the Class of 2012. On May 30, they receive their UBC degrees.
I consider it an honour to share the stage with each graduating student.
Although I do it thousands of times each year, each time is unique.
That moment is my opportunity to acknowledge the critical tools and
professional skills the student has acquired at UBC, the ability he or
she has developed to communicate ideas and understanding of other
communities and cultures, and the capacity he or she has built for
leadership, for change, and for seeking solutions to the worst of the
world’s problems.
This year, I will also be acknowledging 76 students’ courage in the face
of enormous hardship and loss; their willingness to give of their innate
intelligence and wisdom to a community and a country that denied
them a formal university education; and the triumph of their essential
decency over injustice—their leadership, in other words—their capacity
to effect change, and their gracious responses to one of the world’s
worst problems. Those qualities were exemplified in the exhortation
of one Japanese-Canadian woman to her children after their UBC
education was cut short and their beloved father was taken away:
Shoganai,1 she said. Proceed.
One of Western culture’s most cherished ideas is that it's never too
late. “It's never too late to be what you might have been,” said George
Eliot. “It is never too late to give up our prejudices,” said Henry David
Thoreau. “The time for action is now,” said Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
“It's never too late.” I hold firm to the hopefulness of this idea, even as
I recognize that for some things, the time has passed. UBC’s current
leadership cannot right all the wrongs committed in the past, but it is
not too late to redress them. In addition to the awarding of degrees,
UBC’s Faculty of Arts will establish an Asian-Canadian Studies Program,
and UBC Library will create an archive of materials relating to this
period in the University’s history.
And so to the Class of 2012, I say it’s never too late to learn. Learn this
history, and learn from your alma mater’s mistakes. To the 76, I say it’s
never too late to belong. UBC is honoured by your willingness to rejoin
the University community, and is proud to call you alumni.
To all of you, it is my pleasure to say at last, congratulations.
Proceed.

Message from the Pres ident
1 Shoganai translates as “it can’t be helped.” It is a common Japanese phrase used to express the need for acceptance in the face of insurmountable difficulties.

Elders, Chiefs, Board of Governors, dignitaries, Okanagan faculty,
staff, family, friends, visitors, students and graduates, on behalf of the
Okanagan Nation Chiefs and our member communities we welcome
you to our beautiful territory and to UBC’s Okanagan Campus Spring
Convocation 2012. We are pleased to be provided this opportunity
to extend our congratulations to all the new Okanagan graduates of
UBC. We are honoured to be part of your Convocation. Ceremony
and recognition of achievement, and the meaning inherent in special
events like this one, have always been an integral part of syilx culture,
beliefs and customs. Learning has always been fundamental to the
well-being and survival of our communities, Okanagan people valued
life-long learning. Education and academic excellence are also a part
of syilx culture. The honoring of one’s intellect and knowledge has
always been important. The syilx traditions and ceremonies awarded
achievement no matter how big or small. Announcements were
made to the Nation that “this is a day of significance to this person,
(family and/or community) and you are all welcome to share in this
celebration”. The Okanagan shared their land, their teaching, and
their culture with others and now as graduates, you too will have
this opportunity to share your education with the community. Your
educational attainment will serve you well, especially if you use it to
serve your communities! The Okanagan Nation Alliance and UBC
have forged a new path of partnership and inclusion so that we can all
learn to embrace, strengthen and celebrate our diversity. The pursuit
of academic excellence will continue to advance and transform our
societies. Okanagan participation in today’s convocation ceremony and
within this University bodes well for our future and our communities.

Academic Regalia
The wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has
persisted from the Middle Ages, when the first Universities
were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University
to another, and within a University, according to the status
of the wearer. At the University of British Columbia, the
undergraduate’s and Master’s gown are black.
The colours for the degrees being granted in 2012 at UBC’s
Okanagan campus are as follows:
B.A. – University Blue
B.A.H.S. – University Blue with a scarlet cord
B.Ed. – White with University blue cord
B.F.A. – University blue with magenta cord
B.H.K. – Malachite green
B.Mgt. – Light grey with a black and gold cord
B.S.N. – Scarlet with University blue and white twisted cord
B.S.W. – Magenta
B.Sc. – Light blue
M.A. – Fully lined University blue
M.A.Sc. - Fully lined scarlet
M.Ed. – Fully lined white with University blue cord
M.F.A. – Fully lined University blue with magenta cord
M.S.N. - Fully lined scarlet with blue and white cord
M.S.W. – Fully lined magenta
M.Sc. – Fully lined light blue
Ph.D. - Gown- Maroon with front panel & sleeves of University blue
with gold piping; Hood- Blue silk outside with gold lining; Hat- Decanel
bonnet of maroon silk with gold cord and tassel
The Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour. The Master’s
hood is the same as the Bachelor’s, except that it is lined with the
distinctive colour.
The regalia of the Ph.D. consists of a gown, Cambridge style, of maroon
silk with front facing-panel and sleeves of University blue with gold
piping; a hood, Cambridge pattern, of blue silk outside and gold lining; a
cap, decanal bonnet, of maroon silk with gold cord and tassel.
The hood for the honorary degree LL.D. is of scarlet broadcloth
lined in dark blue velvet; for the D.Sc., it is lined in dark purple
and for the D.Litt., it is lined in cream.

Congregation or Convocation?
People often ask why UBC calls its graduation ceremonies
“Congregation.” There are no records to say why this term was
originally adopted but it has been used by UBC since its first graduation
ceremonies in 1916 and is believed to originate from its use in English
institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge. According to Wikipedia,
“a congregation is an assembly of people for a given purpose; with
respect to a university, it is a formal meeting of senior members of the
University. Examples include the Regent House in the University of
Cambridge and the House of Congregation and the Ancient House of
Congregation in the University of Oxford. Stemming from this tradition,
in some universities a graduation ceremony is known as a congregation,
even if the ceremony is not a meeting of the university’s governing body
in the traditional sense.”
For whatever reason, UBC adopted this term for its graduation
ceremonies in 1916 and has used it ever since when inviting faculty,
students and guests to the Annual and more recently the Spring and Fall
graduation ceremonies. UBC is unique amongst Canadian institutions in
that it appears to be the only institution that still uses this term.
The term ‘Convocation’ at UBC is more often used to describe a group
of people – defined by the University Act – including the Chancellor,
President, members of the Senate, all faculty members and all graduates
of the University. The Convocation, through the Chancellor who serves
as its chair, confers degrees, including honorary degrees, and awards
diplomas and certificates of proficiency.
In Fall 2007, UBC Vancouver Senate reconfirmed its preference to
maintain the tradition of using the term ‘Congregation’ for its graduation
ceremonies. In Spring 2008, the UBC Okanagan Senate passed a
motion that “Convocation be adopted as the name for meetings of the
UBC convocation held at UBC Okanagan for the purposes of conferring
degrees, effective June 2008.”
Did you know…?
• UBC’s first Congregation ceremony took place on May 4, 1916 in the
Hotel Vancouver ballroom. There were 41 graduates.
• UBC’s first graduate degrees were conferred in 1919.
• The first Congregation ceremony on the Point Grey campus was held
in 1927.
• The first graduation ceremony was held at UBC ‘s Okanagan campus
on June 9, 2006.
• The first graduate degrees were conferred at UBC’s Okanagan campus
on June 6, 2008.

The Univers ity Mace
The University Mace is a symbol of the authority of the UBC Chancellor.
It is displayed on ceremonial occasions, most notably during the
Convocation ceremonies but also during the Installation of a President
or Chancellor.
The Mace is carried by the ‘Macebearer’ who leads the Platform Party,
which includes the Chancellor, the President and other dignitaries, onto
the stage for the Convocation ceremonies.
Created by First Nations artist Sheldon Louis of the Okanagan Indian
Band, the University Mace is carved from a single piece of alder wood,
and combines Okanagan Nation traditions with university customs.
The main art work on the Mace features three symbolic spirit icons—a
mother bear with her two cubs, the image of the mountains, and water
— given to UBC Okanagan in 2005 by the Okanagan Nation elders. The
spirit icon gifts were selected by a group of First Nation elders, led by
Andrew McGinnis, an Okanagan Traditional Medicine Keeper from the
Penticton Indian Band, and Victor Antoine, an elder of the Okanagan
Indian Band. Each spirit icon was chosen carefully for its special
significance to the region, reflecting local Okanagan Nation tradition,
culture and knowledge.
The Mace also features a number of university symbols, including the
UBC Okanagan logo, the University coat of arms and the UBC motto
Tuum Est – It’s Yours. In addition, the back of the Mace displays the
word Suknaqinx, which is of the Nsyilxcen language, spoken by the
Okanagan’s original people. Roughly translated, it means “the ones who
stand on the hill and are seen and heard from far away.”
The University Mace, which was carved in the shape of a paddle,
representing the importance of Okanagan Lake to the region’s people, is
also inlayed with silver, applied by First Nations silversmith artist Justin
Terbasket of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band. The Mace was used
for the first time at the 2009 Convocation Ceremonies.
The Chancellor’s Okanagan Chair
In 2007, UBC’s Okanagan campus commissioned the creation of a
new Chancellor’s chair for use in Okanagan Convocation ceremonies.
Handcrafted by master furniture maker Dennis Weidman of Lake
Country, B.C., the chair was fashioned from cherry wood, a species
selected for its significance in the Okanagan’s long history as a fruit–
growing region.
The chair’s front panel features UBC’s motto, Tuum Est, the UBC logo
laser engraved in the headrest panel, and UBC’s coat of arms on each
side panel.
O Canada
O Canada! Our home and native land,
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The true north strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

maintaining the formal rhythm and structure. This song has been called
the “Okanagan Song” or the “Okanagan Nation Anthem” because the
phrasing and meaning were constructed to celebrate pride in being

of UBC.
1915• The University of British Columbia opens in
temporary headquarters at the former MUCBC
facilities (nicknamed the “Fairview Shacks” after the

full- and part-time faculty is 34.
1922• Tired of over-crowded conditions and inadequate
facilities, UBC students launch a campaign known as
“Build the University” to resume construction at the
Point Grey campus. With 56,000 names on a petition
for the government, 1,200 students with floats, bands
and banners march through the streets of downtown
Vancouver to the Point Grey campus. This pilgrimage
became known as the “Great Trek,” as it successfully
convinced the Government of B.C. to resume work on
the Point Grey site. The “Great Trek” represents one of
the greatest efforts of an undergraduate student body
in support of its university and still reflects the spirit
and pride of UBC students.
1925• UBC moves to Point Grey campus.
1940• Students contribute to the construction of Brock Hall,
the university’s first student union building.
1951• Student initiative leads to construction of War
Memorial Gymnasium, as a memorial to the British
Columbians who died serving their country.
1979• UBC awards its 100,000th degree.
1989• UBC launches the “World of Opportunity” fundraising
campaign to pay for new buildings, facilities,
programmes, and scholarships. By the time it ends in
1993, this overwhelmingly successful campaign raises
a total of $262 million.
1993• U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris
Yeltsin meet at UBC during the “Vancouver Summit.”
• Dr. Michael Smith receives the Nobel Prize.

UBC. . . forever
Welcome Class of 2012, to your new and honoured place in the UBC
community. Today we celebrate all you have worked for and achieved in
your time as a student; and the promise of your future as an alum.
Many students don’t realize that when you graduate from UBC, you
automatically become an alumna(f) or alumnus(m). You cross the stage
at convocation, the Chancellor admits you into UBC’s alumni body, and
your relationship with the University enters a whole new phase. Now
you begin to see the true value and potential of your time here.
You might be surprised at just who your fellow alumni are, their levels
of accomplishment, influence and contribution. No matter where you
go, you will find yourself in the company of amazing people – educators,
artists, doctors, nurses, business and community leaders – UBC grads
who will be your role models, mentors, colleagues and friends.
We’ll help you connect through our newsletters, web pages and social
networks. You will receive a warm welcome at mentoring, cultural,
educational and career-building events, whether you stay here in the
Okanagan or go anywhere else in the world. You can get involved
in alumni networks as far away as London and Seoul or as close as
Kelowna, Vancouver and Calgary.
UBC acknowledges your important place in our community. Worldwide,
there are well over a quarter million graduates. That’s a powerful
network that you can work within to build your life and make a difference
in the world. Brought together, we represent a significant and positive
force. Remember our motto Tuum Est – UBC is still yours. It will always
be yours. This place is as much about you as it is about buildings and
classes.
So reach out. Stay in touch. Ask for help when you need it. Lend a hand
when you can. Work together and everything is possible.
Just remember that to keep you in the loop, we’ll need at least a current
email address and, even better, the city where you live. Please send yours to
[email protected] or visit web.ubc.ca/okanagan/alumnirelations for more
information.

start an evolutionStart an evolution
UBC generates ideas that start evolutions. Ideas that change the
way people think and the way the world works. The University’s
influence is spreading across the Okanagan region, attracting
new talent, enriching cultural life and helping transform the
region’s economy. Our student population has more than
doubled to over 7,900 students and, as our student population
grows, our campus must expand to support their learning.
Our start an evolution campaign places UBC in a strong position
to improve our capacity—and that of our donors—to create
change in the world and in our community. Our campus goal is
to raise $100 million for key priority areas like student support,
innovative research and community engagement.
From creating student awards to improving regional health
care—imagine what we can do together. Combine your energy
with ours. Together we will discover new ideas to illuminate our
way forward, creating positive change in the world.
