Today’s Gospel describes the baptism of Jesus in startling detail: “On coming up out of the water He saw the heavens being torn open, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending on him.” We are with Jesus as he is pulled gasping from the streams, blinking water out of his eyes to see the promise of heaven and, shaken, to hear the voice that claimshim as God’s beloved. Like Isaiah, the author of this Gospel offers an explicit invitation as he allows us to experience this moment with Jesus.Shaken by the experience, we are claimed by God. Meditate on how the psalm describes the moment that hope is given to us through Baptism as a timeof profound joy. You will draw water joyfully fromthe springs of salvation. For Christians, the immedi-ate fruit of hope is joy. Today, find reasons for hope, and allow that hope to give you joy. Reflecton and connect moments of joy in your life to yourChristian hope for eternal life with God.

Scripture Insights

This selection from Isaiah 55 is sandwiched between chapters that have the common theme of “covenant.”In today’s reading, all who are thirsty are invited to come and be nourished, to come and be satisfied by God, who invites us again and again into a covenant relationship. The Responsorial Psalm (taken from a much earlierchapter in the Book of Isaiah) picks up the theme of nourishing water in its refrain, “You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.” As a gatheredcommunity of faith, we pray these words and celebrateGod’s faithfulness. Our Gospel reading for this feast is from the first chapter of Mark. Mark, who unlike Matthew and Luke, does not provide a story of the Nativity, opens his Gospel with what he identifies as a quotation from theprophet Isaiah (in actuality, it is a combination of wordsfrom two prophetic books, Malachi and Isaiah). In a few short verses, the first six of which we do not heartoday, the Gospel writer tells us that the Good News has begun. John the Baptist is introduced and he immediately begins his ministry of preparing the way for Jesus. As Jesus comes up from the water, we hearers of this Gospel, along with Jesus, are told quiteclearly that Jesus is the Son of God. t God invites each of us to draw near and to be nourished. In a few moments of quiet prayer, express your longing to be nourished. t With today’s psalm, reflect on the words “God is indeed my savior; I am confident and unafraid.” t Take some time today to hear God saying to you: “You are my beloved daughter/son; you I am well pleased.”

PROMISES FULFILLED

In today’s liturgy, Jesus is baptized by John, and God’s voice proclaims Jesus to be the Beloved Son of God with the visible presence of the Holy Spirit bearing witness. Do you remember your baptism? Have you ever witnessed someone else’sbaptism? What do you recall from these baptismalliturgies? In today’s Scriptures, we do well to listen for echoes of our own baptism and the baptisms we have witnessed: water, Spirit, the Trinity, a faith-filled community gathered.

This gospel recounts the final event we celebratein the Christmas season. The Christmas season looks beyond the baby in Bethlehem. Each feast peels back the layers a little further, each revealingthe truth of Jesus of Nazareth from a different perspective. Jesus is the One in whom God keeps the promises made through Isaiah. He will show to the world the glory, justice, power, and abun- dant love of God. And us? Through baptism into Christ, we share in his life in God and in his promise-keeping mission in the world. Living with Christ - January Margaret Bick - page 96

********************* Other Scripture Insights:Jesus chooses this time to enter his public work byjoining the crowd. To acknowledge his sins? No. This is the one who is “like us in all ways but sin.” Jesus participates in the immersion ritual to be in solidarity with the rest of the people, anotherway of living out the mystery of the Incarnation. For people who knew the Scriptures, John’s brief statement says all that is needed. To say that Jesus will baptize them with the Holy Spirit is a clear reference to several prophetic passages, esp. Ezekiel 36: 25-27: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you...and from all your idols I will cleanse you. I will give you a new heart and place a newspirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts. I will put my spirit within you.”
