Caldecote Photo Competition There were no entries for the Photo Competition this time round which is a pity as the subject was our very own village. To give you another chance to capture images of the village we are running the subject again. It would be great to see some more entries for our photo competition. It’s just for fun and the winning photo will adorn our cover page in the next edition. So please get snapping.

So once again this round is on the subject of CALDECOTE. So anything to do with the village or community will qualify.

The deadline for entries is the 8 Sept 2012. Please email to [email protected] by no later than this date

________________________ Caldecote Feast 2012 After last year’s monsoon, the weather this year was very kind to us. Only four rain showers, the longest of which lasted about 10 minutes. I suppose for July ! that’s as good as it gets. The morning started with a beautiful blue sky and the sun shining allowing everyone to setup their stalls and attractions in relaxed mood. At 11 am our Olympic themed parade headed off being lead by the Fruity Clave samba band with the Caldecote version of the Olympic torch being passed from child to child. This year we had everything together on the Rec and we had 16 general stalls, including everyone’s favourite the Bottle Tombola. The human hamster balls were doing brisk business. My favourite was the archery and the fun fair had brought along 5 different attractions. Wellie Throwing was in full swing and the Raptor Centre were showing off some fantastic birds of prey and owls. The bar was in frequent use and the W.I. teas/coffees and cakes were being devoured greedily. Ice creams and crepes were available for the sweet toothed and we even had our local Community First Responder ready to leap into action should anyone have need for first aid if they over indulged at the BBQ / Hog Roast stand. The pimms stall brought an air of Wimbledon to proceedings and the

Page 5: 2012 August/September Caldecote Journal

scouts maggot races were simply something else !! Ryan Taylor, Star FM radio presenter of the morning show, was doing a fantastic job of keeping everyone up to date with the days events and making sure all the stalls were being promoted to the crowd. Our events began with some kids and adults races on our 40 m running track with the prizes being handed out on our very own winners podium. The races handed over to a martial arts demonstration from Adrenaline Martial Arts club with local club members from Caldecote going through their paces. This was then opened up for everyone to come and have a go. The Dog Show was next and various pooches all combed and preened along with their dishevelled owners entered into the spirit of competition and various prizes and rosettes were awarded. This even included an egg and spoon race involving the hounds.

As the crowd started to disperse we decided to call a halt to proceedings at 4pm due to the adverse weather forecast. As usual for the British weather, the late afternoon turned out to be a glorious cloud free and balmy evening, great weather for ending up in the beer tent. As volunteers helped to clear the marquees and collect rubbish, the various stall holders and attractions started on their way home. They all made a point to stop and congratulate us on a great event. Finally, thank you to the people of Caldecote who turned up to enjoy the day. Thank you to all those who donated fantastic prizes for our Grand Prize Raffle and a personal thank you from me to all those who helped me put the Feast together over the last few months. Madingley Race to Infinity: Broadband Rollout Update July 2012 I am happy to report progress with the roll out of superfast broadband to the communities served by Madingley Exchange. Two new cabinets have been installed and commissioned, one on Limes Road/Cambridge Road in Hardwick and the second is on Cambridge Rd in Coton. Both these cabinets have been commissioned for service and are now live! Hurray!! The Hardwick cabinet has been live since May 2012, and now has a few active customers. The first customer to go live on the superfast broadband highway reported receiving download speeds of 31.3Mbps and upload speed of 4.8Mbps. Another one that went on the highway in June reported 35.8Mbps download and 5.5Mbps upload. That is cool. Please note that some parts of Hardwick will be getting service using FTTP technology and this has been delayed. The Coton cabinet went live in June 2012 and now also has active customers on it. The first report of service is for 32.9 Mbps download and 5.9Mbps upload. This is indeed very good news. Residents in either Hardwick or Coton can check if the service is available for their premises by going to the BT website at www.bt.com/infinity, and clicking on the black button that says “Can I get BT Infinity”. This will bring up a popup screen where you can put in your telephone number to check. If the result is negative, then why not register to receive updates and BT

will email you to let you know when the service is available for your telephone number. Residents will not automatically be updated to the new superfast broadband service. You will still have to contact your current service provider to check if they are able to provide the service to you and then buy a subscription. This will be possible only if the provider has subscribed and bought wholesale from BT. Usually providers will be able to tell you what service packages they are able to offer you. Please bear in mind that if your current provider is unable to supply you, then you may have to switch providers to get the service. The villages of Caldecote, Childerley and Madingley and the Dry Drayton Estates will be getting the service via FTTP. Unfortunately, the service for these areas has been delayed even further. This is because BT has had issues with some of the cable laying work done by their contractors which means the work will have to be re-done. We have already seen some more cable contractor vans in the Caldecote area laying cables. This situation is understandably very frustrating for many, including me, who had been eagerly waiting to be able to order the service in June. I am waiting for an update on the timescales and will provide updates as soon as I have them. BT were keen to emphasise that for the Madingley exchange area 100% of premises will see an increase in speed, with 99.9% of premises receiving SFBB (Super Fast Broad Band) speeds greater than 15Mb, and

Page 10: 2012 August/September Caldecote Journal

0.1% of premises receiving between 2Mb &15 Mb. Some residents of Childerley had expressed concern that they had not seen much activity in their area. BT was able to provide reassurance stating that the fact that the residents of Childerley haven't seen much activity to date means that they will be connected via FTTP. For more detailed information, please visit the Madingley Exchange blog at www.RaceToInfinity.org.uk or “Like” the facebook page at www.facebook.com/MadingleyX to ask questions or email me [email protected] . From the Rector… Olympic reflections This Summer, most of us will be spending as much time as we can fixed in front of our television sets. The Olympics always present a great spectacle, and knowing that they are happening just down the road (even if most of us don’t seem to know

anybody who actually got tickets) adds to the excitement. It’s hard not to be thrilled by a sprinter running faster than ever before, by the precision of a diver, or by the giddy heights attained by a pole-vaulter. Watching exceptional human beings is an inspiring experience. But the Christian message has something important to say to us as we stare at uniquely-gifted individuals. It is that each one of us is amazing, each human being a reflection of the glory of God. As one of the early Christian writers, Irenaues of Lyons, put it: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” The more fully we understand another person, an ordinary one as well as an exceptional one, the more of God’s glory we are going to see. So….as well as looking at Olympians, this Summer, why not look in two other directions as well? First, at your family, friends, colleagues or neighbours. How can you see some of God’s glory in them? And secondly, in a mirror, at yourself. Neither will be perfect, because both we and those around us have slipped up, lost touch with the full glory of God, but both will be remarkable, and both matter hugely to God. Every one of us is special, Every one of us is remarkable. Every one of us is precious to the God who designed us to reflect His glory. Mike Booker

Churchwarden’s Corner A picture is worth a thousand words. But there’s so much going on at St Michael’s these days that we’ve produced entire slideshows of them on the website! Type ‘Jubilee’ into the website search box (www.caldecotechurch.org.uk) and you’ll be reliving the sights, sounds and tastes of our June celebratory service and lunch at the village hall – from the bang of crackers to the fizz of the firecracker to the cream of the WI’s fruit-decked cake.

The Jubilee service was one of our special “Second Sundays” – services in the village hall that integrate craft and activities with our worship as a community of all ages, around a theme for the day. On August 12th we’ll have an Olympic theme and (though it’s too early in the school holidays to even whisper this) in September we’ll celebrate “New Beginnings” – to ease the way back into the new school term… The return to school will also see the return of our After School Church Club. Next term they will be held monthly. Each Club will run in the

Page 13: 2012 August/September Caldecote Journal

Village Hall on the Tuesday before our Fourth Sundays – services in the church specially designed to welcome families. Children who’ve been to the Club the Tuesday before will have a head start and enjoy the service all the more because the theme will be linked. Like all our regular services, the Fourth Sunday starts at 11am, and you are very welcome. At St Michael’s we enjoy having the full range of styles of service, and at the end of September we have a special service coming up at Childerley Chapel. We will mark this year’s harvest with a traditional morning prayer service, and are delighted to be welcoming our guest preacher, the Revd Professor Michael Reiss. The service will be followed by refreshments, and we are very grateful once again to Chloe Jenkins for this opportunity to enjoy Childerley.

There are many, many people to thank for all that is happening at St Michael’s, but this summer I’d like to shine the spotlight on a rather hidden group of dedicated people: our church flower arrangers, whose arrangements add something special each Sunday to our services. Their skill and talents were on full display over the Open Gardens weekend, when they filled the church with flowers on the baptismal theme “Light & Water”. And yes, there’s a

slideshow of them on the website to enjoy – just type in “flower slideshow”. It’s well worth the visit. Friends of Caldecote Church … reviving our heritage ’Twas the season!

We were blessed by good weather and overjoyed that so many people took part in our Caldecote’s Open Gardens weekend in June. It is amazing how much variety we have within our few local hectares … ancient meadows, woodland, wild grasses and orchids, a profusion of flowering shrubs and roses, self-sown annuals, salads, vegetables and fruit, sculptures, pigs, chickens, ponds, streams, fountains, swings, slides and much more. Then there were the added attractions of children’s mosaics and prints, pizzas, cakes, scones, teas, plants, a raffle and a Fair-Trade stall. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the chance of an outing without needing the car, and to enjoy a good relaxed natter with the gardeners, ending up with a pizza or a cup of tea and a cake. Very many thanks to all the gardeners who put on this wonderful collective display, who had evidently worked so hard to do the necessary weeding and tidying, and who put on so many other extra activities. However can we better this next year? A week earlier a large group of Caldecote ladies (mostly!) enjoyed a flower arranging demonstration given by Moira Neville in the beautiful and tranquil wildflower garden of The Old

Rectory, next to the church. In addition to Moira’s creative inspiration, everyone enjoyed afternoon tea, and live music, in the safety of the marquee. Very many thanks to everyone who came, to

Moira and to Catherine Hubbard for initiating and organising this excellent event. Together, our two garden events raised over £1,800 for the church renovations – fantastic! Pennies roll over the £1,500 mark When we started the Jam Jar “Every Penny Counts” project last year, we suspected our target of raising £1000 was a little on the ambitious side. We never dreamt that by this summer we would have collected enough coins to break through the £1,500 mark. To date, £1,520 has been raised, and the pennies are still rolling in, long after we collected the majority of jam jars back in. If your jam jar has been missed or you are kindly keeping on collecting loose change do bring them to 1 Porthmore Close any time, or to the village shop where they are also collecting on our behalf. Cake for a Feast Nearly 50 people tried to judge the weight of a big chocolate cake at the Caldecote Feast in July. Congratulations to the winner Ian Pritchard who came closest to the

Page 15: 2012 August/September Caldecote Journal

true weight of 4 lb 12½ oz (2.17 kg) … and whose family then feasted on cake! Friends’ Newsletter We now have 60 people signed up for the free Friends e-newsletter. Caldecote, Dry Drayton and Hardwick Community Car Scheme. By the time you read this we will have held our latest coffee morning in Caldecote Village Hall. This is at the courtesy of the Open Door coffee mornings which are held monthly there in aid of different charities. They have kindly given us a space for which we are very grateful. The coffee mornings are sponsored by the local Churches and we are all very grateful to the team of ladies who organise it each month and provide the teas and coffees. It is always a very successful social event as well as raising extra funds for the Charity of the morning. As said we are indeed grateful for the space they have allotted us for the last three years. Depending on whether you were connected with the coffee morning or not you may be aware of some changes to our running at the moment. Glenda is standing down as a co-ordinator along with Sheila who

Page 16: 2012 August/September Caldecote Journal

has current problems with her health. However Glenda will stay doing the driving when she can, and Sheila will continue keeping the scheme running on the administrative side behind the scenes. Hazel can be rung any time as before. Anne can also be rung at any time. All requests should be made at least 48 hours, or earlier if possible, in advance of the appointment to enable us to try to arrange a driver for you. If an answerphone is used please leave your name, address, phone number and appointment details. We will try to meet emergency request but this cannot be guaranteed. Also we are always in need of more drivers. Without our drivers the scheme simply could not exist. Open Cambridge 7–9 September 2012 A free weekend celebrating history, heritage and culture from the University of Cambridge For one special weekend in September Cambridge will open its doors and welcome everyone to share in its spectacular architecture, art collections, libraries and gardens. Open Cambridge features a variety of free pre-bookable and drop in events across the Friday and Saturday. Walks, talks, tours and exhibitions will highlight aspects of the City’s history and its rich heritage. A range of libraries, gardens, museums and historic buildings normally closed to the public will open up for families, local residents and community groups to discover and explore. This year’s Open Cambridge will offer a dip into the swimming history of Cambridge. Explore some of Cambridge’s swimming haunts, and learn about the Chancellor who warned scholars bathing in the river would be publicly whipped - and how hundreds of years later the river was teeming with swimmers including Rupert Brooke. A tour of the Central Science Library promises to be a highlight for visitors of all ages. Built on the remains of a medieval monastery, the Central Science offers subterranean stacks, a historic collection of illustrated natural science books, and a reputation for ghostly visitors. Other events include a behind the scene tour of the ADC theatre, home of the famed University Footlights dramatic society; combined punting

and walking tours of Cambridge; and lessons in Victorian party planning, among many more. This year, we are again pleased to welcome a number of City venues to the programme. Look out for tours of some of the city’s most significant historic buildings. For a rare chance to visit several Colleges in one day while supporting local charities, consider participating in the Bridge the Gap charity walk taking place on Sunday 9 September. All activities are free, unless specifically stated. Advanced booking is essential on all tours, and is available online at: www.cam.ac.uk/opencambridge Bookings open at 10am on 23 July. For information on accessibility and other inquiries, please check the event description or call us on 01223 766766. ______________________________

and to invites experts from across the country to take part. Speakers at the host of debates and talks include the legendary BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson, China expert Martin Jacques, Radio 4 Controller Gwyneth Williams and Executive Editor of The Economist, Daniel Franklin. The debates cover issues as wide-ranging as the aftermath of the Arab Spring, the future of the BRICs, the social impact on the West of the rise of China and the US elections. Professor Simon Baron Cohen will take part in a panel discussion on whether neuroscience has been used to promote traditional gender stereotypes. John Simpson will ask whether, in a world of increasing turbulence, progressive forces will be stronger than repressive ones and if our increasing interconnectedness is a force for good in international politics. The main day of the Festival on Saturday 27 October is packed full of talks and debates for adults and workshops and performances for children. There will be performances by three acclaimed authors and poets, Lauren Child, best known for her Charlie and Lola series; Andy Stanton of Mr Gum fame; and legendary Rasta and performance poet, Benjamin Zephaniah. Interactive sessions range from making junk musical instruments, puppets, graffiti and circus workshops to an examination of the everyday practice of magic in medieval Egypt.

The events for children continue through half term week and, in keeping with the nightmare theme, include talks and handling sessions with slimy hagfish and blood-sucking mini-beasts. On Halloween, the Scott Polar Museum will be sharing close encounters with dreaming explorers, ghostly presences, trails and creative activities, spooky books and film.
