The year past, 2012, proved to be an active and successful year for Docomomo US and its chapters testifying to the interest in and advocacy for the preservation of modern architecture. At the national level the board saw the departure of Jorge Otero-Pailos and Kazys Varnelis. Jorge, who served the board for many years as its vice president, returned to teaching at Columbia University’s Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, his architectural practice and art installations. Kazys, who has been instrumental in the creation and implementation of the new Docomomo US website, left the board to dedicate more time to Studio X his innovative global design studio as at Columbia University. Docomomo US is very grateful for their important contributions. Flora Chou, a policy advocate of the LA Conservancy joined the board this past September. She is a veteran of Docomomo US having been the organizing force behind the VIIIth International Docomomo Conference in New York in 2004.

On the national level, Docomomo US established two new initiatives. The first was the development of an international lecture series with a lecture on Brno’s Tugendhat House given by Ivo Hammer. The Tugendhat House event was co-sponsored by the World Monuments Fund and hosted by the Czech Center New York. The second initiative, based in part on the success of the face to face board meeting in Los Angeles in 2011 and a meeting with representatives of the regional preservation community, saw the combination of these efforts into a more formal symposium. In 2012, Docomomo US co-sponsored and co-organized the annual James Marston Fitch Colloquium dedicated to Public Housing and its preservation issues. Speakers from Morocco, France, Scotland, the Netherlands, and the country of Georgia together with their American counterparts addressed a wide variety of issues. The symposium attracted several hundred people and was generously supported by the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation of Columbia University, the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation, the Netherland America Foundation, Preservation Alumni and the French Government. Video from the event can be found on the GSAPP YouTube page.

On the advocacy front, nationally, Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Orange County Government Center seemed to attract the most attention not in small part due to the iconic nature of the structures and the preservation struggle around them. Docomomo US continued to support the local chapters in their advocacy efforts, which are outlined in the chapter activity summary in this report. Improvements were also made in our communications most notably in our monthly newsletter that carries a wide variety of national and international news as well as contributions by our members about their activities. continues to receive attention far above the industry standards, testimony to the quality of the content and the interest of our members.

2013 promises to be an equally or even more active year with the organization of our National Symposium in Sarasota, Florida in April. The symposium is organized together with our Florida chapter and the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Florida in Gainesville. We hope that many of you will be able to attend. More detail about all these activities can be found in this report and we thank you for all your support.

Sincerely,

Theodore PrudonPresident

In 2012, Docomomo US welcomed our newest chapter in Oregon under the leadership of Peter Mejier. Peter, a professional architect, led the advocacy effort to save Memorial Coliseum designed in 1960 by Skidmore Owing and Merrill. Oregon, and the northwest, have its own unique interpretation of modernism and we look forward to their contribution to our national dialogue.

Also this past year, Docomomo US was thrilled to welcome Palm Springs Modernism Week as our second Friend Organization. Our Friend Organization efforts now in its third year, recognize regional organizations in the United States which share Docomomo US’s mission and values and offers a means to enhance communication and cooperation between an organization, their members and Docomomo US. For 2013, Docmomo US is pleased to announce Modern STL (STL for St. Louis) has joined current Friend Organizations Houston Mod, and PSMW to become our third such partner. Docomomo US would like to extend a warm thank you to all of our friends and to those organizations who, like a well dressed suitor, like to make things official.

As we continue to move forward into 2013, Docomomo US expects new chapters in the mid-century state of Hawaii led by Yale Professor Dean Sakamoto, in the greater Los Angeles county area led by Katie Horak of the Architectural Resources Group and by Tom Jester, Joan Brierton and Michael Shapiro in the long-awaited Greater Washington DC area.

Docomomo US would like to thank Richard Shieldhouse, former President of Docomomo US/Florida for all his efforts in the state and for leading exceptional efforts during our annual Tour Day events. Christine Madrid French, newly transplanted from California, has taken over as President of the Florida chapter and we welcome her to the group.

GEORGIA: In March, the Georgia Chapter partnered with the Atlanta Preservation Center to present a tour of the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center as part of the annual Phoenix Flies event, and in May partnered with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Georgia Historic Preservation Division to present Jack Pyburn’s talk, Technology, Modern Architecture and Historical Significance in the 20th Century. 2012’s National Tour Day event focused on Midtown Atlanta’s Modern landmark, the Jova Daniels Busby-designed Colony Square. In September the Chapter collaborated with the Central Congregational United Church of Christ to present a tour and talk about the work of architect Kenneth Johnson.

At the Georgia Tech College of Architecture Jack Pyburn, FAIA taught a course entitled “Historic Context and Design” with the objective to lead graduate students in developing a narrative about a historically significant building as the foundation for a design assignment in a historic context. In 2013, Jack Pyburn is teaching a preservation studio assessing the 1964 Philadelphia Police Headquarters in collaboration with the graduate UPenn preservation program. Chapter President Thomas Little, AIA worked with students and faculty at Georgia State University and Georgia Tech on a project to identify and document mid 20th century sites in downtown Atlanta. Findings will be used to help expand and update historic districts.

The Chapter has more than 800 “likes” on Facebook, making it an effective channel for quickly getting the word out about events and issues. The Chapter’s message and mailing list system was modernized early in 2012, and is now using the MailChimp service. As an “interested party” the Chapter has participated in the environmental review process related to a planned multimodal passenger terminal in downtown Atlanta, which impacts a large area including the Atlanta Constitution Building.

GREATER PHILADELPHIA: The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of Docomomo US completed the year 2012 highlighted by: A March lecture on architect John Grisdale, presented by member William Whitaker, held at the Library Company of Philadelphia a 1965 Carroll, Grisdale and Van Allen Building. Also in March, Member Maureen Ward, AIA interviewed Modernist Architect and Docomomo US member, Bob Geddes. The conversation will be transcribed and maintained in our archives. Member Janet Kimbleton Grace served as a consulting party member in April, successfully halting the partial demolition of a 1966 Stonorov and Haws residential high rise in Philadelphia. A June tour was held of Lou Kahn’s Fisher House

in Hatboro, PA. Members Matthew Fisher and Jim Simmons coordinated an Event-Brite invitation that resulted in almost 100 tour participants. In August, member Janet Kimbleton Grace served as a delegate to the Docomomo International Conference in Espoo, Finland. The Docomomo US Tour Day, held in October, featured Kahn’s Richard’s Medical Building and Eero Saarinen’s Hill College House. Interpretive lectures were presented by members, Dr. Emily Cooperman, Carl M. Dress, AIA and Zamir Garcia, AIA. Throughout the year, member Bobbie Tilkens-Fisher provided commentary and advocacy updates on our Facebook pages and Twitter Feeds. In support of our Chapter’s mission of education, members Karen Ramsey, AIA and Karen Moustafellos provided one page brochures as a companion guide for each tour and event. The Library Company one page brochure can be downloaded on the Greater Philadelphia chapter page.

MINNESOTA: Over the course of 2012, the Chapter has been active in fulfilling its mission through its many activities including the following highlights: Movie: In partnership with the College of Design the MN Chapter presented, Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman by Erick Brickler to members and the public. The evening included a director led discussion. Going Going Gone Tours: This self-guided tour series invited the public to four potentially threatened properties on the market. Partnership with Minnesota Historical Society(MNHS): Frank Lloyd Wright’s Neils House was the first Docomomo US/MN and Minnesota Historical Society tour/event collaboration. This is one of many planned partnership events with MNHS. Annual Mod Mixer: This membership appreciation party and recruitment event was held at Forage Modern Workshop, an emerging modern design retail store where activities included music, prizes, and a photo booth. Attendees were encouraged to come in their best vintage outfit.

Ongoing advocacy efforts include: Peavey Plaza, Macys Saint Paul, Walker Library Uptown, Golden Valley Fellowship Hall, and others. The Register Committee, compiled of board members and volunteers, is working on listing Minnesota Modern properties that are threatened or have been highlighted during Chapter events.

Tour Day drew over 150 attendees and highlighted homes by Robert Cerny, Home Design Center, Babcock of HGA, Graffunder/Nagl, and Long/Thorshov. An after-party for attendees and homeowners allowed attendees to better understand the work of Docomomo.

New board members include: John Comazzi , Jessica Gerard, Amy Meller, Catherine Sandlund, and Todd Grover. Continuing: Nathan Anderson, Amy Artates Carroll, George Carroll ,John Comazzi, Jennie Eukel, Jamie Heilicher, Karen Rue, Sara Ibarra, and Tim Quigley. Special thanks to members who stepped down: Chad Bogdan, Chad Blomquist, Rachel Nelson, Ralph Nelson, Salvador Rocha Blumenkron, and Elizabeth Gales.

NEWYORK/TRI-STATE: During 2012, the New York/Tri-State Chapter, continued its active advocacy, education and communications programs. In addition, we rotated our leadership roles and expanded our board. Our advocacy efforts have included testifying, collaborating with other preservation organizations, monitoring, meeting with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, submitting an affidavit, and spreading the word about threats to Modern heritage. We were part of the year’s most prominent Modern advocacy battle in our area, the campaign to preserve the interior of the iconic Manufacturers Trust Company (1954) designed by Gordon Bunshaft of SOM. Despite the efforts of a sizable coalition, in the end the interior was compromised. However, Harry Bertoia’s screen was returned. Additionally, the chapter has continued to participate in the ongoing efforts to protect several nationally significant sites including: Bell Laboratories (1957-62) in Holmdel, NJ and the TWA Flight Center (1962), both by Eero Saarinen, as well as the Orange County Government Center (1970) by Paul Rudolph. NY/Tri has opposed the negative impact of New York University’s vast Greenwich Village expansion plans on both I.M. Pei’s Silver Towers (1964–66) and the neighboring Washington Square Village (1958–60), a Corbusian scheme by Paul Lester Wiener with a significant landscape by Sasaki, Walker & Associates. We testified in opposition to the demolition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Plaza (1970) by Kevin Roche but sadly construction of a new plaza is now underway. The chapter participated in 11th hour efforts to save the Victor Christ-Janer House (1949-52) in New Canaan and has been monitoring the redevelopment of Pier Luigi Nervi’s George Washington Bridge Bus Station (1963). Finally, drawing upon the information collected in our earlier Midtown Modern survey, we have identified the most significant unprotected Modern buildings within the area of the proposed NYC East Midtown Rezoning and requested that the City evaluate their eligibility for landmark designation.

During 2012, the chapter presented an average of one public program each month. Our Modern Conversations series at the Knoll showroom in Chelsea hosted five speakers including: John Harwood on IBM’s corporate design program, Caroline Zaleski on Long Island Modernism, Carla Yanni on Modern residence hall design, and our own board member John Kriskiewicz, who examined Park Avenue in popular film from the mid-century. We co-sponsored the sold out New York premiere of the film “Modern Tide: Mid-century Architecture on Long Island,” which was followed by a lively panel discussion with director Jake Gorst and others. NY/Tri organized tours of Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology and of the architecture of Kevin Roche at the Metropolitan

WESTERN WASHINGTON: 2012 was a successful year for Docomomo US/WEWA as we expanded our opportunities with many regional partners. In June, WEWA was one of several partners to host events during the Seattle Center Foundation’s 50th Anniversary celebration of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. As the site of the former fair grounds, Seattle Center, is still the hub for many of Seattle’s cultural events. In June, WEWA organized a lecture series highlighting local expertise in Modern design from Knute Berger and Susan Boyle. This series was concluded by a lecture by Docomomo US President Theodore Prudon and a reception under the Pacific Science Center’s courtyard arches designed by Minoru Yamasaki. WEWA help to sponsor and promote two exciting furniture exhibits: “Eero Saarinen: A Reputation for Innovation” at the Nordic Heritage Museum and “George Nakashima: A Master’s Furniture and Philosophy” at the Wing Luke Museum for Asian Pacific American Experience. Docomomo US/WEWA hosted some of its most popular tours around the region, including the Taylor House in Tacoma, the Lupton House in Mercer Island and the McElroy House in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood. For National Tour Day, we had record attendance at three small, but wonderful homes in West Seattle designed by Arnold Ganges. WEWA advocated for the preservation of two Paul Thiry designed buildings. Unfortunately, Thiry’s office building was demolished in 2012. However, Cedar Park Elementary was designated a Seattle Landmark last summer.

Museum of Art with Morrison H. Heckscher. Gallery tours visited “Kevin Roche: Architecture as Environment” at the Museum of the City of New York with its curator Kyle Johnson, who is our chapter Vice President, and the exhibition “Félix Candela: 1910–2010” at Columbia University’s Wallach Gallery with curator Janet Parks. Our Docomomo docents welcomed approximately 1,500 people at the open house we sponsored at the TWA Flight Center in conjunction with Open House New York Weekend as our contribution to Docomomo US 2012 Tour Day.

The outstanding chapter communications program has continued to regularly convey local news about advocacy and issues related to Modern architecture as well as announcements of our own programs and initiatives through our monthly e-news and our website. We still publish a printed newsletter once or twice a year and in 2012 we launched our chapter Facebook page.

In May, we rotated our board roles and John Arbuckle became chapter president. Nina Rappaport, a founding board member and long-serving president, has become a vice president focusing on development. Kathleen Randall became secretary. We also added two new members to our Board of Directors. John Kriskiewicz is a recognized architectural historian, educator and tour guide who has been actively involved in local preservation advocacy. Marissa Marvelli, a graduate of Columbia’s Historic Preservation Program, has already strengthened our communications efforts. The other continuing members of our dedicated board include: Meredith Bzdak, John Morris Dixon, Kyle Johnson (vice president), Leslie Monsky and D’juro Villaran-Rokovich (treasurer).

MIDTEXMOD: In 2012, Mid Tex Mod worked to raise awareness of the Modern Movement in Central Texas along numerous fronts in Austin and San Antonio. Highlights include several April events that raised the profile of Edward Durell Stone’s work in Austin and Texas. The book signing and lecture featured Hicks Stone recently released Edward Durell Stone: A Son’s Untold Story of a Legendary Architect. The lecture and book signing was organized by Mid Tex Mod in collaboration with Preservation Texas, AIA-Austin, and the UT-Austin Student Historic Preservation Association. Mid Tex Mod also gave an evening reception honoring Hicks Stone at the Edward Durell Stone designed Westgate Tower; the Westgate was listed on the National Register for Historic Places in 2010.

In May, Mid Tex Mod hosted a pre-conference tour of San Antonio’s modern heritage as part of the 15th Annual International Scientific Symposium of US/ICOMOS. Mid Tex Board Member Kim McKnight wrote that, “Tour participants were delighted to encounter modern resources seldom seen by the casual visitor to San Antonio.” Additionally, Board Member Stuart Johnson discussed the preservation community’s concerns about the potential threat to the modern resources of HemisFair with future redevelopment scenarios.

For the Docomomo National Tour Day in October, Mid Tex Mod focused on the First Baptist Church, a 1970 Brutalist building designed by Barnes, Landes, Goodman, and Youngblood, and Page, Sutherland, Page. Jack Goodman, an engineer and partner in the firm that designed the church, gave attendees a special tour. The Tour Day also featured Anna Mod, who presented research and images from her book, Building Modern Houston.

2012 was a year of cross-pollination and partnerships between the Docomomo Mid Tex Mod chapter and other Texas architecture, preservation and conservation groups. The Mid Tex Mod chapter is committed to building on these collaborations and expanding our outreach and membership in 2013.

NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: Docomomo US and its partners, Docomomo US/Florida and the University of Florida’s Historic Preservation Program are pleased to announce the first annual Docomomo US National Symposium 2013: “Modern Matters” to be held in Sarasota, Florida from April 18-20, 2013. Given the ongoing public discussion about the value of preserving modernist works, the National Symposium will feature presentations by Docomomo US chapters, as well as peer reviewed presentations, about their experiences and efforts around the country.

The multiple-day event to be held at Ringling College of Art + Design will include a keynote address by Docomomo US President Theodore Prudon and tours organized by the Sarasota Architectural Foundation of Sarasota’s significant post-war architecture including those by Paul Rudolph, Victor Lundy among others. We hope you will join us as the goal of the National Symposium is to bring our members and their chapters together, share knowledge and experience, and advance preservation of modern architecture intellectually and professionally. Wherever possible, receptions and dinners will be held in outstanding examples of postwar buildings. For information on the event and to register, visit the symposium website: www.docomomo-us-symposium.com.

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL

TOUR DAY: The sixth annual Tour Day event included 33 events in 21 states and saw a number of advances in the evolution of the event. In addition to Docomomo US chapters and friend organizations, eight new organizations participated in the event including: Historic New England, The Harry Ransom Center: University of Texas at Austin, Mid Century Modern Rhode Island, Schweikher House Preservation Trust, 2020 Omaha, First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, and the prospective Docomomo US chapter in Hawaii. A special thanks to all our partners for making this year a great success. Tour Day 2013 is scheduled for Saturday, October 5th, 2013. Make sure to save the date and watch for updates in national and local planning.

MODERN LEAGUE: In an effort to attract and connect to young professionals interested in modern architecture and design, Docomomo US launched a national initiative in 2012 called the Modern League. This new group, led by volunteer coodinator Katherine Malishewsky, focuses around social media outreach and local events where young people can get together and learn about modern heritage. With the goal of the Modern League to support the mission of Docomomo US, this past summer, Docomomo US did a soft launch in NYC where roughly 8-20 people got together each month for a tour and social event. Events ranged from

a walking tour of the campus at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, former site of the 1939-40 and 1964-5 New York World’s Fair, a tour of Louis Armstrong’s home in Corona, Queens, and a holiday gathering at the Philip Johnson designed Four Seasons Restaurant on Park Avenue.

As Docomomo US continues to connect with a younger audience, we envision the Modern League as a tool for local chapters and a way to develop events in locations where a Docomomo US chapter may not be present. Young professionals already engaged with Docomomo US chapter activities are encouraged to get involved and lead Modern League events locally. For more information, visit the Modern League website (www.modernleague.org)or its pages on Facebook or Twitter.

DOCOMOMO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FINLAND 2012 & SOUTH KOREA 2014

In early August, roughly thirty Americans took part in the 12th annual Docomomo International Conference in Finland entitled The Survival of Modern, From Coffee Cup to General Plan. The week-long event took place in Tapiola, the lush garden city neighborhood of Espoo located just utside Helsinki. Docomomo US members were treated to stimulating discussions of the challenges facing architecture and conservation professionals across the globe. Joining our members, Docomomo US was able to offer two scholarships to graduate students studying historic preservation in the United States. With the generous support of the Finlandia Foundation, Jennifer Whisenhunt and Mary Park, students from the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation were able to attend and participate in the conference.

Three new country chapters were welcomed during the general assembly meeting including Docomomo China (provisional), Docomomo Georgia (provisional), Docomomo Hong Kong (provisional), Docomomo Iran, Docomomo Lebanon, Docomomo Macau (provisional) and Docomomo Ukraine. This brings the total number of international chapters to 66.

The theme for the 13th Docomomo International Conference in Seoul in 2014 is “Conflict and Expansion”. It explores the diaspora of modernism: how it has extended and taken root in various cultures and generations as well as how there has been conflict, if any, during this process. Along with a graduate level workshop on a proposal for the Sewoon Arcade by Swoo-Geun Kim, one of Seoul’s most famous and controversial modernist buildings. Located in the heart of old Seoul, the conference events will be held at recently renovated Modern Museum of Contemporary Art.

For more information on the conference and updates, visit the Docomomo International website: www.docomomo.com.
