INTRODUCTION
The 2012 Annual Report on Conservation Science
ZoosandaquariumsaccreditedbytheAssociationofZoosandAquariums(AZA)serve
asconservationcentersthatareconcernedaboutecosystemhealth,takeresponsibility
forspeciessurvival,contributetoresearch,conservation,andeducation,andprovide
communitiestheopportunitytodeveloppersonalconnectionswiththeanimalsintheir
care.Whetherbreedingandreintroducingendangeredspecies;rescuing,rehabilitating,
andreleasingsickandinjuredanimals;maintainingfar-reachingeducationalandoutreach
programs;orsupportingandconductingin-situandex-situresearchandfieldconservation
projects,accreditedzoosandaquariumsplayavitalroleinmaintainingourplanet’sdiverse
wildlifeandnaturalhabitatswhileengagingthepublictoappreciateandparticipatein
conservation.
The2012AnnualReportonConservationScience(ARCS)focusesexclusivelyonthose
conservationprojectsthathaveadirectimpactonanimalsinthewild.Thereportisbasedon
surveydatasubmittedby179ofAZA’s223accreditedzoosandaquariumsand15certified-
relatedfacilities.Eachofthemorethan2,700projectsubmissionslistedinthisreportwere
reviewedbyatleastonememberofAZA’sFieldConservationCommittee(FCC)toensure
thattheprojectmetthecriteriaofhavingadirectimpactonanimalsinthewild.Basedon
thissurvey,AZAfacilitiescollectivelyspentapproximately$160milliononfieldconservation
in2012,providingfurtherevidenceofthesignificantroleAZA-accreditedzoosandaquariums
playinsavingtheworlds’species.
A GLOBAL EFFORT
AZA-accreditedzoosandaquariumsservedasactiveconservationleadersforprojectsin
theirownbackyards,throughouttheUnitedStates,andglobally–reachingover115countries
in2012alone.Whilemostactivities(~1,000)tookplaceintheUnitedStates,facilitiesreported
workingbetween50-105timesineachofthefollowingcountries:Indonesia,Kenya,China,
Congo,Madagascar,andMexico.

AZA-accreditedzoosandaquariumssupportedbothspecies-specificandhabitat-focused
conservationprojects.Projectsfocusedonconservingecosystemsoftensupportedavariety
ofanimals,whilespecies-specificprojectstargetedover650individualspecies,over200of
whicharelistedundertheUSEndangeredSpeciesActandabout200ofwhicharepartof
anAZASpeciesSurvivalPlan®(SSP).Ofthespecies-specificprojects:
•60%focusedonmammals,includingcheetah,elephant,rhinoceros,chimpanzee,
snowleopard,orangutan,giantpanda,Grevy’szebra,jaguar,polarbear,andokapi
•13%focusedonreptiles,includingseaturtles,easternMassasaugarattlesnake,
anddiamondbackterrapin
•13%focusedonbirds,includingHumboldtpenguin,red-neckedostrich,African
penguin,Californiacondor,andpipingplover
•6%focusedonamphibians,includingeasternhellbender,Oregonspottedfrog,
Panamaniangoldenfrog,PuertoRicancrestedtoad,andWyomingtoad
•4.5%focusedoninvertebrates,includingelkhorn,staghorn,andothercoral;horseshoe
crabs;monarchbutterfly;andKarnerbluebutterfly
•3.5%focusedonfishes,includingwhaleshark,bluerockfish,andCaliforniagrunion

“ThisisGorgonzola’sterritory.She’susuallyrightaroundhere,”
saysDougBell,ashiseyesfollowathick,dustytrailaround
afruittreeintheQueenElizabethIIBotanicGardensonthe
islandofGrandCayman.
Iamthinkingthatisaninterestingnameforthelizardweare
lookingfor–aspecialone–aGrandCaymanblueiguana,
areptilesorarethattenyearsago,therewerefewerthana
dozeninthewildontheplanet.
Isitbecausethiscerulean-sprinklediguanalooksliketheblue-
veinedcheese?
Instead,thisparticularfemalewasnamedforherfavorite
indulgence,thenonifruitfromthetreewejustpassed,which
hasapungent,cheese-likeodor.Apparently,shegotherlabel
becausesheenjoysthisfruitsooftenthatshehasbeenknown
tosmelllikegorgonzola.
Gorgonzolaisanimportantanimalinthissmallgroupthat
camesoclosetoextinction.Shewasamongthefirstcaptive-
bredanimalstobereleasedintotheparkin2001.Gorgonzola

isusuallyinthesameplace,easytofindandstudy,andhas
consistentlyusedthesamesoilpatchtolaybetweenfive-and-
teneggsayearsince2003.
Bell,whohasbeeninvolvedasavolunteerwiththeBlue
IguanaRecoveryProgram(BIRP)since2004,isfieldspecialist
andall-aroundexpertonblueiguanas.Heispartofasmall
staffinthisbare-bonesorganizationconsistingofadirector,
twowardens,andvariousvolunteersfromaroundtheglobe
whosemissionitistobringthesereptilesbackfromthebrink.
“Itwasaclassicendangeredspeciesstory,”saysFredBurton,
directoroftheBIRP,themanwhoinitiatedtheirrescueand
continuesastheirchampion.
ThelargestnativelandanimalonGrandCaymanhadevolved
withoutworriesaboutpredators.Therewerenocarnivorous
mammals.Theiguanasbaskedonpristinebeaches,andtheir
habitatattheinterioroftheislandwaslargelyinhospitableto
mostlife,sotheyflourished.
Then,thetidesliterallyturnedfortheblueiguanas.

Onceplentifulalongthecoast,theiguanasthatpreferredthe
shorewerehuntedoutbyearlysettlers.Thosethatremained
inlandfairedbetterandwereprotectedwithintherazor-sharp
edgesoferodedkarstandthornyshrubthatmakeupiguana
paradise.
Timepassed,andpeopledidn’tknowmuchabouttheiguanas
thatsharedtheirisland,andtheydidn’tgolooking.
Then,thehumanpopulationsprangupwithnumbersmore
thandoublingevery12yearsorso,bottleneckingtheiguanas,
andsystematicallytakingovertheirlandscape.
“TheenvironmentonGrandCaymantookseveralmillion
yearstoevolve,”saysBurton,“yetabulldozercandestroythis
habitatintenminutes.”
Theiguanashadnoadaptationforallthatcamewithhuman
expansion.Bigbuildings,dogs,cats,insects,rodentsandfast
carswereallintroducedtotheirislandhome.Hotasphalt
highwaysthatwebbedthroughtheirlandmadegoodbasking
spotsfortheheat-lovingreptiles,andmanybecamevictims
ofroadkill.Theseroads,andthenhotels,coveredtheiguanas’
nestingsites.Non-nativefireantsandratsattackedthe
iguanas’nestsanddestroyedtheireggs.Youngiguanaswere
pickedoffbyferalcats.Dogskilledadultiguanas.
Ultimately,blueiguananumbersplummeted.
Inthe1990s,bysomecounts,therewerehundredsinthe
wild,butby2002,itseemedfewerthanadozeniguanashad
endured.
“Iguanasaresurvivors.Theyaresmart,buttheyhavehadto
learnbyexperience,”saysBurton.
Bringingbackaniguanapopulationwouldtaketheright
animalsandhealthyones.Burtonandhisteamputforthan
epicefforttosavethosethatremained.
“Blueiguanaswereimpossiblyrare,”saysBurton,“sorarethat
wecouldn’tlearnaboutthemtotrytosavethem.Therewas
asheerlackofinformation.Howmanywereleft?Wherewere
they?Whatweretheirconservationproblems?”
TheBIRPwatchedwildiguanasontheeastendoftheisland
tolearnwhattheycouldoftheirbehaviorsinthewildandthen
determinetheiguanas’needsforspaceandsurvival.Theybuilt
acenterattheQEIIBotanicGardenandsetupasafezone
forapreciousfew“founders”(geneticallyunrelatedanimals
withrootsfromwildpopulations)andatinycaptivebreeding
programbegan.
Blueiguanasareslowbreedersandnotthemostprolificof
reptilianegglayersatoneclutchperyearof10-to-20atthe
heightofafemale’smaturity.Iwatchedwithfascinationasan
iguananestwasexcavatedatthebreedingcenter,eachegg
sorareandprecious,itwasasifwehaddiscoveredthoselaid
byadinosaur.Theroundish,leatheryeggs,alittlelargerthana
chicken’s,gotoBurton’shomefor70daysinanincubatorina
climate-controlledroomthatdoublesashisoffice.
Thenewhatchlingsarethenmovedtothebreedingfacility
attheQEIIBotanicGarden,andafteratwo-yearheadstart,
theyoungiguanasarebigenoughtoholdtheirownagainst
predatorsandarereadyfortheirreleasetothewildsofthe
island.
“Nowthatwehaveanestablishedpopulationbackinthe
wildandcanfinallystudyhowtheiguanasliveintheirnatural
environment,wearebetterabletounderstandtheirneedsas
wellasthepressuresonthepopulation,”saysBell.
Startingin2001,WildlifeConservationSociety(WCS)health
experts,includingveterinariansandtechnicians,partneredwith
BIRPtoensurethatthetwo-year-oldiguanaswereintopform
beforetheirrelease.Dr.PaulCalle,Dr.BonnieRaphael,and
variousmembersoftheirstafftookturnsworkingonlocation
inGrandCaymanwheretheysetupprotocolsandperformed
iguanahealthassessmentsincludingweighing,measuring,
bloodsampling,andtaggingthejuvenileblueiguanas.
“Blue iguanas were impossibly
rare,” says Burton, “so rare that
we couldn’t learn about them
to try to save them.”

“Itisincrediblyenablingtohavethetopzoovetsinthe
worldworkingwithus.Theirexpertiseandresourceshave
broughtsuccessfasterandmoreeffectively.Weneededthese
importanthealthscreensfortheiguanastomoveforward,”
saysBurton.
ThecollaborationbetweenBIRPandWCShascontinuedfor
thelasttenyears.
Calleadds:“Wecanaccomplishourconservationgoalsforthis
criticallyendangeredspeciesthroughapartnershipofgood
science,husbandry,commitment,andhealthcare.”
Duringtheirhealthcheckups,thejuvenileiguanasaretagged
withindividualcombinationsofcolorfulbeadsthatshowon
eithersideoftheircrests.Thisbitofiguanajewelry,likea
piercedearring,servesasidentificationandavisualcodefor
thestaffthatreleaseandobservetheiguanasintheirnew
homes.
“Itisremarkabletobepartofthisgreatconservationsuccess
story.In2011,weexaminedandtaggedmoreblueiguanasin
onemorningthanexistedinthewildtenyearsago,andwedid
itdayafterday,”saysCalle.
Thelong-termoutlookforblueiguanasismostpositivein
threeprotectedareasontheeasternsideofGrandCayman.
QEIIBotanicGarden,SalinaReserve,andColliersWilderness
Reserveareallhotandhumidspotswiththecraggiestof
substratesthatseemsounwelcomingonlyaniguanacould
lovethem,andtheydo.
Retreats,orhousesforherps,aredesignedandbuilt,then
airliftedtotheseprotectedareareservesandplacedaccording

TheBlueIguanaRecoveryProgramgetssomuch“bang
forthebuck”byrelyingveryheavilyonvolunteersand
institutionalpartnershipstogetalotoftheworkdone.
Localvolunteersareaneverydaypartofthesceneatthe
breedingfacility,andlocalcorporationsprovideasignificant
proportionoftheprogram’sannualfunding.
InternationalvolunteerswhohavevisitedGrandCaymanto
workwiththeBIRP,numbersome200bynowandmore
signupeveryyear,withvisitsrangingfromtendaysupto
threeorevensixmonthsatatime.
CoreinstitutionalpartnersincludetheInternationalReptile
ConservationFoundation(Arizona,USA)andtheDurrell
WildlifeConservationTrust(Jersey,U.K.).However,many
otherzoos,particularlyintheAZAnetwork,alsoprovide
significantsupport.Notablesovertheyearshaveincluded
thezoos(andtheirvariousfundingfoundations)atSan
Diego,MilwaukeeCounty,FortWorth,CentralFlorida,
Disney,theSmithsonianNationalZoo,andtheWildlife
ConservationSociety.
toaplanthatincludespredeterminingtheiriguananeighbors
forbestgeneticpotentialinfuturepopulations.
“Wehavetriedmanydifferentstylesandmaterialsforthe
iguanaretreats,buttheirpreferenceisfortheoriginalwooden
design,”saysBell,whohasconstructedover300oftheseherp
housesinthelastsevenyears.
Eachretreat,withvariousanglesandentrances,weighs
upwardsof40lbsandhastobecarriedonthebacksofvery
determinedandsweatyvolunteersfromtheairdropspottoits
specificlocationinthesharp,shrubbyforest.
“Ittakesanunbelievableefforttomaneuvertheretreatsover
theviciousrockandthroughthethick,andoftenpoisonous,
scrub,”saysBell,whospendstendaysataclipmovingand
placingtheiguanaretreatsinthethick,stickytropicalclimate
ofthereserves.
AsofAugust2011,thereareover100retreatshousingthe
blueiguanasreleasedintotheprotectedareasoftheSalina
andCollierReserves.Ifallgoeswell,thetotalnumberof
blueiguanasreleasedintothewildbytheendof2011willbe
over630.Inafewmoreyears,thepopulationrecoverygoal
of1,000iguanasatthreesiteswillbemet,allowingtheblue
iguanatobereclassifiedasEndangeredandofftheCritically
Endangeredlist.
“Thisisaspeciesthatwealmostlost.Now,throughthe
cooperativeeffortsofBIRPandWCS,theblueiguanaiswell
onitswaytorecovery,”saysCalle.

Whileconservationresearchhasalonghistorywithin
AssociationofZoosandAquariums(AZA)institutions,a
numberofnewinitiativesdemonstratetheimportantrole
zoo-basedresearchplaysinwildlifeconservation.By
employingbothcuttingedgetechnologyandawiderange
ofzoo/aquarium-basedexpertise,scientistsand
conservationistsareworkingtomakein-situconservation
effortsmoreeffective.Byusingquantitativedatatohelp
guidedecisions,zoo/aquariumconservationandresearch
staffarehelpingtoensurethefutureofendangeredspecies
aroundtheworldandinourownbackyards.Hereweprovide

TheCrossRivergorilla,endemictotheremotehighlandsof
theNigeriaCameroonborder,isthemostendangeredofthe
Africanapes.Yearsofhuntinghavemadethesegorillas
extremelyreclusive,andmanyaspectsoftheirbiologyand
ecologyarepoorlyunderstood.However,theNorthCarolina

Zooanditspartnershavedemonstratedalong-term
commitmenttotheconservationofthisspecies
andareintegratinginnovativetechnologiesintoour
researchapproachestobetterunderstandthiscritically
endangeredape.
WorkingwiththeWildlifeConservationSocietyand
governmentalpartnersinNigeriaandCameroon,North
CarolinaZooputinplaceamobilecomputer-basedmonitoring
systemforrecodingandanalyzingdatarelevantforCross
Rivergorillaconservation.Thissystemallowsrangersto
quicklyandaccuratelyrecordinformationinthefieldand
providessemi-automatedanalysisofdatabymanagement
staff.Satelliteimageryhasbeenavaluabletooltopredict
gorillahabitat.Usingthesemaps,wehavesearchedforgorillas
inremoteforestareaswheretheyhadnotpreviouslybeen
recorded,andbetween2007and2010wefoundover70
separatesignsofgorillapresence,expandingtheknownrange
oftheCrossRivergorillaover200percentandidentifyinga
numberofimportanthabitatcorridorareas.Finally,DNA
extractedfromgorillafecalsampleshasallowedustobetter
understandpatternsofgeneticdiversityandmigrationinthe

CrossRiverpopulation.Wearecurrentlyinvestigating
theuseofDNAasatooltocensusofalltheCrossRiver
gorillas,somethingthathasnotbeenpossibleusing
traditionalapproaches.
Minnesota Zoo – Research on Animal Movement Informs Conservation Planning
Combiningzoo/aquariumexpertise,suchasanimal
immobilizationmethods,andtheuniquelivinglaboratory
thatzoos/aquariumsprovidewithnewwildlifetracking
technologiesisanotherwayinwhichAZAresearchers
contributetoin-situconservation.Thisapproachhasbeen
appliedbytheMinnesotaZooinresponsetoa50percent
declineinmoosepopulationsinnortheasternMinnesotasince
2005.Ourstaffbeganbytestingtrackingandactivitycollars
onzooanimals,providingvaluablebackgrounddataand
essentialvalidationsofthesetechnologies.Wearenowhelping
trackandanalyzemovementandactivitydatafromover50
wildmooseinMinnesota.Amongthequestionsweare
attemptingtoanswerishowtemperatureinfluencesmoose
habitatuse.Resultsfromthisresearchwillbeusedtoidentify
importantmoosehabitatinMinnesotaandtodevelop
managementrecommendationsthatwillhelppreventfurther
lossesofthisiconicnorthernmammal.
HalfwayacrosstheworldinNamibia,MinnesotaZoo
conservationbiologistsareemployingsimilartracking
techniquestoinformconservationeffortsforthecritically
endangeredblackrhinoandthreatenedHartmann’smountain
zebra.Workingcloselywithlocaldecision-makers,weare
providingscience-basedhabitatmapsbasedonlong-term
researchthatareusedtoinformconservation-compatible
landuseplans.
Phoenix Zoo – Using Scientific Data to Help Native Species Recovery Efforts
WeatthePhoenixZoo’sJohnsonFoundationConservation
Centerareusingresearchtoimproveconditionsforthenative
speciesinourcare,focusingonenvironmentalparameters,
behavioralindices,andoptimumconditionsforreproduction.
WeworkinclosecollaborationwithpartnersattheArizona
GameandFishDepartmentandU.S.FishandWildlifeService
topropagateanimalsfortheirin-siturecoveryefforts
throughoutourregion.
Recentresearchprojectsatthezooincludeastudyexamining
howtemperatureaffectstherateofdevelopmentoftadpoles
inourChiricahualeopardfroghead-startingprogram.Wewere
abletodetermineanoptimaltemperatureforrearingthefrogs
whichmaximizesproductionofmetamorphosedfrogs,rather
thanlate-stagetadpoles.Thesesub-adultfrogsarelessreliant
onwaterbornnutrients,canmoreeffectivelyescapepredators
thantadpoles,andcanbereleasedearlyintheyear.Anearlier
releasealsogivesthefrogsmoretimetoacclimatetothe
releaseenvironmenttohelpreducemortalityduringthewinter.
AnotherPhoenixZoostudyhelpedtodeterminethe
environmentalparametersnecessaryforraisingPage
springsnails.InArizona,the12knownpopulationsof
springsnalisareallindeclineandclassifiedasaspecies
ofgreatestconservationneed.In2010,wedevelopeda
monitoringandassessmentsystemthatallowedusto
trackthespringsnalisresponsestoimprovementsintheir
aquatichabitat.Thissystemhasallowedestablishmentof
areproducingpopulationofspringsnailsattheJohnson
FoundationConservationCenter.Thisisthefirsttimethis
specieshasreproducedoutsideofitsnaturalhabitat.Data
fromourpopulationisprovidinginformationtobiologists
workinginthefieldaboutthedevelopmentrateandspecific
environmentalconditionsthatthesesnailsrequire.Our
colonywillalsoserveasasourceforindividualstobe
released,allowingaugmentationofwildpopulationsofthis
endangeredgastropod.

TheNorthCarolinaAquariumsareextensivelyinvolved
withtherescueandrehabilitationofloggerheadseaturtles.
Throughseveralresearchprojects,wehavebeenableto
monitortheefficacyandimpactsofourprograms,which
aimtopreserveandprotectloggerheadsinthewild.
Weusedsatellitetransmitterstotrackthemovementsof
cold-stunned(hypothermic)juvenileloggerheadswhichhad
beachedthemselvesandthatweretreatedbytheaquariums
andreleased.Byfollowingpost-releasemovements,wewere
abletodemonstratethatrehabilitatedanimalssurvived,
exhibitednormalbehaviors,andwerenotpronetorepeat
strandingevents.Further,since2007,wehaveusedsatellite
telemetrytotrackthepost-releasemovementsofloggerheads
excavatedfromtheirnests.Thesehatchlingsaretypicallyheld
fortwo-to-fouryearsbeforebeingreleased.Post-release,maps
createdusingsatellitepositiondataindicatethatreleased
animalssurviveandbehavenormally,evenafterseveralyears
ofcareinanaquariumsetting.Datacollectedarealsobeing
usedtohelpdetermineoptimalreleaselocationsfor
loggerheadsofthisageclassforfuturereleases.
ThesearejustafewamongmanywaysinwhichAZA
institutionsaredirectlyapplyingresearchtotheconservation
ofanimalsinthewild.Manyzoo/aquarium-basedconservation
initiativesareconductingscience-basedconservationprojects
focusedonavarietyofspecies,habitats,andconservation
challenges.

thefreshwaterweusefordrinking,bathing,growingcrops,
industry,andallofourotherdailyactivities.Wesharethat
tinyfractionofwaterwithaquarterofallthevertebrateson
Earth.Unfortunately,thecompetitionforthisscarceresource
meansthatfreshwaterecosystemsandtheanimalsthatlive
inthemfacethehighestratesofimperilmentworldwide.In
thesoutheasternUnitedStates,thesehabitatsarealsoglobal
biodiversityhotspots.Morethanathirdofthecountry’s
freshwaterfishesarefoundintheSoutheast,includingcolorful
fisheslikeminnows,darters,andtheSouthernAppalachian
brooktrout.
SouthernAppalachianbrooktroutareoneofthemost
beautifulaquatictreasuresthattheAppalachianMountains
havetooffer,withbrightredbelliesandyellowwavymarkings
ontheirbacks.PopulationsintheSoutheastlookverysimilar
tobrooktroutinthenorth,buttendtobesmallerandare
geneticallydifferent.Unfortunately,thesedistinctpopulations
intheSouthhavebeenunderthreatformanyyears.Dueto
poorlandusedecisionsforloggingandtheintroductionof

rainbowandbrowntrout,nativeSouthernAppalachianbrook
troutarenowfoundinlessthanthreepercentoftheirhistoric
rangeinTennesseeandNorthCarolina.
Fortunately,bothanglerandconservationgroupsareworking
togethertoreversethisdeclineintheSouthernAppalachian
brooktrout.Jointprojectsinournationalforestshaverestored
riparianzonestoshadethecreeksandremovedinvasivetrout
abovebarrierslikewaterfalls.SouthernAppalachianbrook
trout,however,aren’tjustgeneticallydistinctfromnorthern
populations;eachpopulationintheSouthisoftendistinct
fromitsneighbor,evenamongshortdistances.Webelieve
thatbecausethisspeciesisfoundinhigh-altitudeheadwater
streams,eachpopulationbecameisolatedanddifferentiated
throughouttheregion.Forthisreason,weneedtobe
extremelycautiouswithreintroductionprogramstoavoid
disruptinganylocaladaptations.

raisedincaptivityafewtimespreviouslyattheTellicoFish
Hatchery,buttheywereabletouseconstantlyflowingwater

fromthesourcestreamwherethetroutlived.TheNational
FishandWildlifeFoundationawardedagranttotheTennessee
AquariumConservationInstitute(TNACI)in2012sothatwe
couldtrytoreplicatetheirsuccessinaclosedsystematthe
Aquarium.Thistechniquecouldthenbeusedtorestoretrout
fromanywhereintheirrange,sincewehavealmostnoriskof
escapedfishordiseaserisks.
Wecollected50adultSouthernAppalachianbrooktroutin
October2012tostartthisnewcaptivebreedingprogram.With
thehelpofTennesseeWildlifeResourcesAgencyandU.S.
FishandWildlifeServicetroutexperts,wewereabletocollect
morethan1,000eggsfromthesebroodfish.About20days
laterweknewthatmorethan400eggshadbeensuccessfully
fertilizedwhenweobservedwhatiscalled“eye-up,”wherethe
eyesofthedevelopingbabytroutcouldbeseenwithinthe
fertileeggs.“HatchDay”finallycameon29Novemberasthe
babytroutoutgrewtheireggsacsandbeganwigglingout.
Atthispointtheyarecalled“sacfry”becausetheystillhave
ahugeyolksactofeedthem.Theywereabletostretchtheir
bodiesoutandcontinuetogrow,buttheydidn’teatforseveral
moreweeksuntiltheiryolkwascompletelyabsorbed.Likeany
growingbaby,oncetheywerereadyforrealfood,thesefish
werehungry.Finelydicedbloodworms,powderedeggyolk
andlivebrineshrimpwereontheirmenu.Bythetimethey
startedeating,theylookedliketinyversionsoftheirparents,
measuringaboutone-halfofaninch.
Wewillraisethesebabytroutthroughlatespringuntil
theyreachthreetofourinchesinlength.Thentheywillbe
reintroducedintothesamestreamwherewecollectedtheir
parentssoastudentfromTennesseeTechUniversitycan
examinethesurvivalofthetroutinthewild.Theresultswillbe
usedtohelpusmakemoreinformeddecisionsabouthowto
continuewiththisreintroductionprogram.Wearesothankful
forourgreatpartners,especiallytheanglersintheregion,who
providesomuchsupportforprojectslikethese.Together,we
canhelpprotectandrestorethisamazingbiodiversityinour
ownbackyards.

Itwasdifficulttoseeanythinggiventheearlyhour.Iwipedthe
eyepiecesofmybinoculars,thecondensationfrommybreath
cloudingthelenses.Icouldjustmakeouttheyoungwolf
outlinedontherockyoutcrop,“wolfing”downapieceofmeat
thatIhadconvenientlyleftthere.Fromthefaintscaronhisleft
thigh,IcouldidentifythatthiswasTarura07,partoftheTarura
pack,oneofseveralwolfpacksintheBaleMountainsIhave
cometoknowintimatelyinthelastfewyears.Herepeatedly
chewedonthechunkofsheepmeat,seeminglyobliviousof
therabiesvaccinesachetconcealedwithin.Whenhewas
finished,helickedhismuzzlebeforebrieflylookingupinmy
directionasiftosay“More?”Hethenpaddedfrantically
aroundtheden,hisheadlow,hisnosetryingtodetectahintof
meat.Whenhe’dsatisfiedhimselfthattherewasnothingleft
tofind,hesettleddownatthemouthoftheden,reassuming
hisbaby-sittingdutiesforthenextfewhours.

SowhywasIsohelpfullyplacingfoodatthedenforany
hungrywolvestofind?Itwasallpartofaground-breakingtrial
totestoralrabiesvaccinesonthisendangeredspecies.
Ethiopianwolfpopulationsareeffectivelystrandedonislands
inaseaofdomesticdogsthatactasareservoirfortherabies
virus.Itonlytakesonerabiddogtopassthediseasetothe
wolves.Oncetransmitted,thesocialpacknatureofthewolves
andtheoverlappingterritoriesbetweenpacksenhancesthe
rapidtransmissionofthevirusfromwolftowolf.In1991,a
majorrabiesoutbreakdevastatedtheBaleMountainswolf
population,withthree-quartersofknownwolvesdyingor
disappearinginaffectedareas.Withonly500Ethiopianwolves
remainingtodayacrosssixisolatedpopulations,losing80
individualsatonetimeisdisastrous.
Sincethesefirstdramaticlossestorabieswerereported,the
EthiopianWolfConservationProgramme(EWCP)hasbecome
akeyplayerinprotectingtheserarewolves,andaspartofits
activities,ithasbeenvaccinatingthedomesticdogreservoir

againstrabiesfornearlytwodecades.Theideaistocreatea
barrierofvaccinateddogsinandaroundwolfterritorythrough
whichtheviruscannotpass.Unfortunately,therearejusttoo
manydogsinthehighlandswithaconstantturnoverofnew
individuals.Despitevaccinatingover70,000dogstodate,
rabieshasmanagedtobreakthroughthisvaccinationbarrier
ontwofurtheroccasions,in2003and2008–09.Duringboth
outbreaks,EWCPsecuredthenecessarygovernment
permissionstoreactivelyhandvaccinatewolvesagainstrabies,
butthisstrategyiscostly,bothfinanciallyandintermsof
wolvesthatdiebeforetheinterventionstarts.Regularly
vaccinatingwolvesbyhandisnotfeasibleduetothefinancial
andhumanresourcecosts,nottomentionthestressesin
constantlyhandlingsuchanendangeredspecies.
Anditisnotjustrabiesthataffectsthisspecies.Canine
distempervirus(CDV)hasalsocausedlargepopulation
declinesintheBalewolfpopulationtwiceinthepasteight
years.Theseendangeredcarnivoresfaceaveryrealthreatof
extinctionfromdisease,orattheveryleast,extirpationofthe
smallerpopulations,severalofwhichnumberbelow30
individuals.Despiteallourvaccinationefforts,diseaseremains
thenumberoneimmediatethreattowolfexistence.Anew
planwasobviouslyneeded.
In2011,theSaintLouisZoofinanciallysupportedthe
developmentofaten-yearconservationstrategyforEthiopian
wolves.Thisprocessincludedareviewofourknowledgeof
diseaseandcontrolmeasuresthatwehadtriedsofar,
culminatinginadiseasemanagementplan.Adirectresultwas
tostartCDVvaccinationsofdomesticdogstotrytoreduce
theincidenceofCDV,andarequesttotrialtheseCDVvaccines
onahandfulofwolves.Shouldsuchatrialprovesuccessful,we
willatleasthaveanemergencyreactivestrategyifwesee
anotherCDVoutbreakinthewolves.
Whileweareadamantthatweneedtocontinuetovaccinate
dogsagainstrabies,aproactive,non-invasivestrategyshould
alsobetried,hencethecurrentoralvaccinetrialandthewolf
withthefullbellylyinginfrontofhisden.Threeweeksafter
deliveringthevaccinetofiveofeightTarurawolves,we
capturedfiveofthem,andtheirsamplesprovidedevidence
thatthevaccinehadsero-convertedintorabies-neutralising
antibodies,indicatingsuccess.Thenextphaseisalargertrial
onmorewolvestodefinitivelyprovethesafetyofthisvaccine
beforeitcanbewidelyusedtoproactivelyvaccinatewolvesin
allsixpopulationsthroughoutthecountry.Theseexciting
resultsofferaglimmerofhopethatthethreatofrabiesmight
bereducedtothemereinconvenienceofregularlythrowinga
loadofvaccinebaitsforthewolvestoindulge.Itwaslargely
thankstothesupportofSaintLouisZoothatwewereableto
movethisplanforward.HopefullyotherAZAinstitutionscan
playasimilarroleinhelpingtoeradicatethethreatof
diseaseandprotectthelastpopulationsoftherarestcanid
intheworld.

BaweaninIndonesia.ThespeciesisclassifiedasEndangered
bytheInternationalUnionforConservationofNature(IUCN)
andisnowrestrictedtoafewsmallisolatedareasonJava.The
Baweanislandsubspecies,S.v.blouchi,onlyoccursonBawean
andisveryrare,andmostprobablyalreadyextirpatedfrom
theisland.Thenominaterace,S.v.verrucosus,isfoundonlyon
JavaafterhavingbeenextirpatedfromMadura.
ItsancestryistracedtoseveralfossilpigspeciesofJavaand
this,togetherwithphylogeneticdata(Randiet.al.,1996),
suggestsisolationonJavaforabouttwomillionyears.
S. verrucosusoccursincultivatedlandscapesandteak
(Tectona grandis)forestplantations,interspersedwithlalang
grasslands(Imperata cylindrica),brushandsecondaryforest
patches.Itisfoundlivingalongsideasubspeciesofthe
Eurasianwildboar(Sus scrofa).

In1982Blouchconductedasurveyforthespeciesonboth
JavaandBawean.Maduraislandwasexcludedasthespecies
wasalreadypresumedextinctthere.Thesurveylocated32
populationsacrossJavaandatthattimethespecieswas
consideredreasonablysecure.AfewyearslaterBlouchand
Groves(1990)pointedoutthathybridizationwithS. scrofa
posedanunknownyetpotentiallyseriousthreattothesurvival

In1993theIUCN/SpeciesSurvivalCommission(SSC)Pigs,
PeccariesandHippoSpecialistGrouppublisheditsActionPlan
andaccordedtheJavanwartypighighconservationpriority,
andstressedtheurgencyofimplementingrelevant
conservationmeasures,includinganothersurvey.
Tenyearsafterbeinggivenhighconservationprioritybythe
IUCN/SSCPigs,PeccariesandHippoSpecialistGroupno
significantconservationactionhadtakenplaceonbehalfof
theJavanwartypigandthespeciesremainedunprotected
underIndonesianlaw.AttheurgingoftheLosAngelesZoo
andincoordinationwithGonoSemiadioftheIndonesian
JAVANWARTYPIG

andfundedtodeterminethestatusofS. verrucosusinorderto
implementnecessaryconservationstrategiesforthespecies
survival.FundingforthesurveywassecuredfromtheGibbon
Foundation,LosAngelesZooandOregonZoo.
The2003surveywasafirststeptowardsassessingthestatus
ofthespeciesandallpopulationsthatwererecordedby
Blouchinhis1982surveywererevisited.Thesurveyindicated
thatbetween1982and2003,17ofthe32(53percent)
populationsidentifiedbyBlouchhadeitherbeenextirpatedor
droppedtosuchlowlevelsthatlocalhuntershadfailedto
encounterthespeciesinrecentyears(Semiadiet.al.,2006).
Thesurveydatasuggestedthatthereareaboutten
populationsremainingonJavaandBaweanwhereS.
verrucosussurvivesandthesepopulationsaresmalland
isolatedfromoneanother.
Themajorityoftheevidencefromthesurveysuggeststhat
S. verrucosusisindeclinethroughoutitsrange.Thisdeclineis
mostlikelycausedbyadeclineinsuitablehabitatandbyhigh
huntingpressures.ThehybridizationofS.v.verrucosuswith
S.scrofaisathirdpressurethatalsohasseriousconsequences
forthesurvivaloftheJavanwartypig.
Asaresultofthissurveyaworkshopconductedinearly2006
involvingscientists,governmentofficialsandrepresentatives
ofthezoocommunity,includingstafffromtheLosAngeles
Zoo,addressedthevariousoptionsforeffectivein-situand
ex-situconservationprogramsforS. verrucosus.Itwasdecided
atthisworkshopthattheimplementationofacaptivebreeding
programforS.v.verrucosusonJavawasneededimmediatelyif
thespecieswastobesavedfromextinction.
IndonesianornithologistDidiIndrawan,GonoSemiadi,Roland
WirthandWalterSchulzbothofZGAP(ZoologicalSociety
fortheConservationofSpeciesandPopulations),aGerman
NGO,tooktheleadroleinlocatingasuitablesiteforthe
establishmentofacaptivebreedingfacility.Afteralongyear
oftryingtofindsuchasite,itwasagreedafterameetingwith
ResitSozer,directorofCikananga,thatthecaptivebreeding
facilitywouldbeestablishedatCikanangaWildAnimalRescue
CenterinWestJava.Cikanangaisthelargestofthenine
RescueCentersthatwerebuiltwithfundingfromtheGibbon
Foundationin2000.Withthelocationsecureditwasnowtime
togetthenecessaryfundingtobuildthefacilitiesforthewarty
pigs.Inthisinstance,theLosAngelesZooandZGAPpartnered
toprovidethenecessaryfundingforthefacilities.
Inearly2008,thefundingwassecuredandadvicefromseveral
Zooexpertsfromaroundtheglobe(SingaporeZoo,Wroclaw
Zoo,SharjaWildlifeCenter,UniversityofEdinburgh)provided
inputintothefacilitydesignandpropermanagementand
husbandryofthewartypig.PavelHospodarsky,formerkeeper
atthePlzenZoointheCzechRepublic,providedon-site
assistanceinsettinguptheinfrastructureforthecaptive
facilityandnowStephanBulkofZGAPassistsResitSozer
withdaytodayoperations.
InMarch2008,thefacilitieswerecompletedandthefirst
Javanwartypigsforthebreedingprogramwereacquiredfrom
RagunanZooinJakarta.Anoldmaleof25years,ayounger
maleknowntohavebeenwildcaughtandtwopigletsthat
weresuspiciousofbeingpossiblehybrids.Additionalanimals
wereknowntobeattheSurabayaZoo,YogyakartaZooand
otherprivateownersaroundJava.Thepotentialthatmanyof
theseanimalswerehybridswithSus scrofawashighand
fundingwasprovidedtohavesamplestakenandsenttothe
U.S.forDNAanalysis.

find such a site, it was agreed

at Cikananga Wild Animal
Rescue Center in West Java.

Attheendof2010,elevenJavanwartypigshadbeen
securedfortheCaptiveBreedingProgram.Althoughseveral
wereofhybridorigintheyplayedasignificantroleinthe
programinthattheyprovidedpotentialmatesforthepure
wartypigsuntilsuchtimematesofpureorigincould
besecured.
Astheprogramhasgrownwehavebecomeincreasingly
awareofhowcloselythisspeciesislivingontheedgeof
extinction.Asstaffgoesoutintothefieldinsearchofpure
wildS.verrucosustheyarefindingmoreandmoreevidenceof
hybridizedJavanwartypigsindicatingthatthehybridization
problemisveryseriousforthesurvivalofthespecies.In
communicationwithlocalhunters,itisbeingreportedthat
fewerpurewildwartypigsarebeingfoundforthepiganddog
fightsthatthewartypigshavebeentraditionallyusedfor.As
thehumanpopulationsteadilygrows(already1,000people/
sq.km),thecompetitionforspacebetweenhumansand
wildlifebecomesmoreintense.Ascompetitionforspace
opensuptheforestsfordevelopment,thisallowshunters
accessintoareasthatwerenotpreviouslyaccessibleandthus
thepigsarecapturedforthedogfightsorhuntedtoprotect
crops.Atthesametimeasnewvillagesarebuiltintothenewly
openforests,domesticpigscomewiththevillageand
ultimatelysomeescapeandjoinupwiththewartypigsto
producehybridizedoffspring.Atthesametime,intheheavily
disturbedandfragmentedhabitat,thewartypigsareforced
intoclosercontactwiththeotherwildpigspeciesinJavaand
domesticpigstoproducehybrids.Aviciouscyclethatall
beginswithanuncontrolledgrowinghumanpopulation.
Despitewhatseemstobeoverwhelmingoddstoprotecta
littleknownspecieshalfwayacrosstheglobe,successfinally
cameinAprilof2012withthenewsthatthreeJavanwarty
pigletshadbeenborntooneofthecaptivefemalesat
Cikananga.Thesignificanceofthiseventisonparwiththe
firsthatchingoftheCaliforniacondorincaptivitythatleadto
thatspeciesbeingsavedfromextinction.Theonlydifference
isthattheJavanwartypigisnotontheworld’sradarorinthe
mediatograbthespotlight.Afewdedicatedindividualsand
thesupportfromtheinstitutionstheyworkforprovidedthe
neededresourcestohopefullypreventtheextinctionofa
veryrareandremarkableanimalthatisunknowntotherest
oftheworld.
Asofthiswritingthereare17pureJavanwartypigsat
CikanangaWildAnimalRescueCenter,whichincludesthe
threepigletsborninAprilandanadditionaltwopigletsborn
inMarch2013.FuturegoalsforthesurvivaloftheJavanwarty
pigwillbetoeducatethelocalpopulationinthehopesthat
thecaptureofthewartypigsforthedogfightscanbe
stoppedandtosecuresuitablehabitatinwhichthecaptive
bornwartypigscanbereleased.
