2. EDUCATION

James Guthrie, BBus RMIT, Grad Dip Acct Deakin (War), Grad Dip Ed (Tert) USQ, MBus

Curtin, PhD (UNSW) and FCPA, FCA, has held positions at various Australian and Italian

universities. He has also been Visiting Professor at universities in Sweden, Italy, New

Zealand, Scotland and England.

3. GENERAL AND ACADEMIC SHORT CV DETAILS

James has held posts at the University of New South Wales and Deakin University prior to

taking up his Professorship at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) in

1995. In November 2004, he was appointed Professor of Accounting, Faculty of Economics

and Business, at The University of Sydney and in 2006 he was appointed Chair of

Discipline. Since his retirement in September 2009 he is an Honorary Professor at The

University of Sydney. In November 2009, he was appointed a fractional Professor at

Bologna University and in December 2010 he was appointed a fractional Professor at

Macquarie University.

He has also been Visiting Professor at universities in Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland

and England. He was appointed Deputy Director of MGSM in 1997, being Director of

Academic Programs from 1996 to 1999, and Director of Research from 1999 to 2000. He

was on the Executive Committee of MGSM for seven years and Discipline Convenor of

Accounting and Finance since his appointment (similar to a Head of Department position).

Before commencing his academic career, James worked in a chartered accounting firm, and

has been made a Fellow of the Certified Practicing Accountants Australia and a Fellow of

the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

His research and teaching interests include public sector accounting, auditing, accountability

and management, social and environmental reporting and auditing, management of

knowledge, and intellectual capital and extended performance measurement and reporting.

He also consults on public and private sector management, management of knowledge,

intellectual capital, budget performance, and annual reporting strategies. James was awarded

the prestigious Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA UK) Research

Foundation International Visiting Professorship for 2000, and an Italian national

government outstanding international academic award for 2003-2004. In 2009, James was

an Italian national government visiting professor in the management discipline.

As well as public sector accounting, auditing and accountability, other major research

interests include social and environmental accounting and reporting. His methodology in

this field, developed in his master's thesis in the early 1980s, has become an internationally

used standard for national and international comparative work. His auditing research work

has included corporate governance and audit committees and he has presented his research

findings to several parliamentary committees. His extended performance reporting research

work has been linked to several consultancies for government and non-profit organisations.

He has been asked over the past decade to provide comments to many Parliamentary Public

Accounts Committees’ inquiries into public sector annual reporting and performance

measurement. His education research work has challenged both the construction and

reporting of teaching, administration and research performance in the Australian and the UK

tertiary sectors. His work for the OECD on the management of knowledge and the

measurement and reporting of intellectual capital in both the public and private sectors has

led to several important large research projects and publications.

Other consultancies include:

Academic Relations advisor to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia

2009 to present;

Independent Costing Review Panel, Commonwealth election 2007, Queensland,

2009;

Expert for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

on 'The Role of Audit in Performance Improvement in Government';

A survey of the environmental reporting practices in annual reports for the NSW

Environmental Protection Agency;

Consultant to the Joint Committee on Public Accounts on Responsibility in Annual

Reports of Public Business Enterprises;

Consultant on public sector commercialisation for the Committee for the Economic

Development of Australia; and

Expert witness on productivity and performance measurement in the public sector

for the Industrial Relations Commissions of NSW, WA and SA.

James continues to supervise doctoral research students, and actively examines other PhD’s.

To date, James has supervised 18 successful doctoral students, many of whom have become

successful academics or professionals.

James has been actively involved in several professional and community bodies concerned

with the above academic interests, particularly as an Associate Director of the Centre for

Social and Environmental Accounting Research, St Andrews University, Scotland, and as an

International Associate of the International Public Sector Accounting Research Centre,

Edinburgh University, Scotland. He is also a founding member of the International Public

Management Network (IPMN) and the International Government Accounting Reports

(CIGAR) network. In addition he has been appointed to the board of the Performance

Management Association special interest group on intellectual capital, Centre for Business

Performance, Cranfield School of Management, UK. He was made an Honorary Fellow of

Dundee University in 1993. He held the Tom Robinson Memorial Lectureship at the

University of Edinburgh for 1993-94, has been visiting lecturer at the School of

Management, Bath University (1987), and has been a visiting Professor at the School of

Business, Stockholm University (1996), University of Siena (1998, 2006), University of

Ferrara (2001, 2002), University of Bologna (2004), University of Bocconi SDA, Milan

(2005, 2007), University of Canterbury (2009) and the University of Waikato (2010, 2011,

2012).

His doctoral thesis examined the emergence of Australian public sector accounting and

management developments, and translated into a number of international refereed journal

articles and professional publications. He has published across a range of academic

disciplines on accounting and management issues, with refereed articles in public

administration, law, economics, management, public policy and, of course, accounting

journals. He has completed several major international research projects comparing public

sector financial management reforms in various countries, which appear in his edited books.

James has published 165 articles in both international and national refereed and professional

journals, and 45 chapters in books. He has presented his ideas and research findings to over

330 national and international gatherings. James is also co-editor of 10 public sector

management and accounting books.

His research work has been supported in recent years by over A$1m of external research

grants from both national and international funding institutions. In addition, he has received

over A$1m from various internal university grants.

James is the joint founding editor of international research journal, Accounting, Auditing

and Accountability Journal (AAAJ), now in its 25th year.

For two consecutive years James has received the best paper award (the John Perrin Prize,

1998 and 1999) for articles published in Financial Accountability and Management. In

1998, he was runner up in the outstanding paper award for the Accounting, Auditing and

Accountability Journal. In 2004, he was awarded best paper for an article published in

Public Management Review. In 2006, he was awarded best paper for an article published in

the Journal of Intellectual Capital. In 2007, he received a highly commended award for a

paper in the Journal of Human Resource Costing and Accounting. In recognition of many

years of support for the Auditing, Accounting and Accountability Journal James received an

outstanding Service Award in the Emerald Literati Network 2008 Awards for Excellence. In

2008 he also received a Highly Commended Award for a paper in the Journal of Accounting

and Organisational Change, Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence. In 2009, he was an

outstanding paper award winner for a paper in the Journal of Human Resource Costing &

Accounting in the Literati Network Awards for Excellence. In 2010, he was awarded a

highly commended in the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence, for “Past

present and possible future developments in Human capital accounting: A tribute to Jan-Erik

Grojer” in the Journal of Human Resource Costing & Accounting. In 2011, he received a

James has an extensive knowledge of the Intellectual Capital (IC) literature. He is

Australasian Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Capital. He has published his IC research

findings in a number of research journals, professional journals and book chapters, and has

presented his ideas to both international and national conferences.

Professor Guthrie was also involved in the development of the Australian Government

Consultative Committee on Knowledge Capital in 2004. This group of industry and

government leaders was established to promote a discussion within Australia as to the value

of “knowledge capital” to an organisation and the nation. In this activity he has worked

with the MD of Microsoft Australia, Westpac, NSW Dept of Lands, Victorian CIO,

Australian Actuaries Association, and CPAAs. The Committee has now formed the Society

for Knowledge Economics which was launched in Melbourne in November 2005. Professor

Guthrie is a policy advisor on research to the Society. From this project, he has developed a

number of industry related research projects and linkage type grants. He has several PhD

students working in this area and has published numerous articles, conference papers etc on

this topic.

In the international arena on this topic area, Professor Guthrie has been actively involved

with the OECD and European academic communities. For instance, he was invited to be a

plenary speaker at the “Intellectual Assets and Innovation: Value Creation in the Knowledge

Economy” EIASM conference, October 2005, in Ferrara, Italy. He was invited to participate

in the international policy conference by the OECD on "Intellectual Assets, Innovation and

Value Creation", October 2005 and in 2008 was involved in the establishment of IC

networks by the OECD. From the OECD work dating back to 1998 on the management of

knowledge and the measurement and reporting of intellectual capital in both the public and

private sectors, Professor Guthrie has become an internationally recognised scholar in this

area, and in 2010 was invited as a plenary speaker on intellectual capital in Italy.
