QUICK FACTS Last Time Out: Firsts & Milestones Vs. BC- Sophomore Mike Busillo made his season de-but and tallied his first career assist.- Senior Rocco Carzo notched his first career multi-goal game, scoring twice.- In his first start of the season, Steve Mastalerz set a new career high in saves with 37. His pre-vious high was 35, set twice last season as a freshman (vs. Vermont and vs. Boston College).- Freshman Shane Walsh made his collegiate debut, skating on the team’s third line with junior Eric Filiou and classmate K.J. Tiefenwerth.

Two Canadians And A Captain- UMass’ second line of senior co-captain Rocco Carzo, redshirt sophomore Steven Guzzo and junior Branden Gracel have contributed seven of the Minutemen's 18 points through two games, in-cluding four goals and three assists.- All three have logged multi-point games as the two Canadian members of the line, Guzzo and Gracel, each contributed a goal and an assist in the 4-1 victory. Carzo scored twice against Bos-ton College.

Special Teams Success- Through two games, UMass' special teams have seen success. In the opener, with a total of 52 total penalty minutes between the two squads, UMass’ power play and penalty kill units saw plenty of action against Connecticut. - The Minutemen have converted 23%.1 (3-for-13) of its power play opportunities with all three scores coming from defensemen (Colin Shea, Darren Rowe and Conor Allen).- Through two games, the Minutemen have al-lowed just one power play goal, holding oppo-nents to a stingy 8.3% conversion percentage.- UMass has killed off 12-of-13 penalties thus far, including a five-minute major against #3 Boston College.- In 2011-12, the Minutemen posted a power play percentage of 18.2% and were 121-for-159 (76.1%) in killing penalties.

Production From The Point- UMass has seen 50% of its goals come from defensemen thus far this season, including all three of its power play tallies. - The Minutemen blueliners have combined for four goals and three assists in two games. Se-nior Darren Rowe has scored in each of the first two contests.

Packing 'Em In- The attendance of 7,123 against Connecticut was the highest ever for a UMass home opener and the most for non-conference home game.- The crowd was the 18th-largest all-time for UMass hockey at the Mullins Center. - Last Friday the Minutemen drew 7,678 against Boston College, the 10th-largest home crowd in program history. - UMass ranked seventh nationally in average attendance last year (6,603), second among Hockey East behind Boston College (5th - 7,549).

Captains Named- Head coach John Micheletto announced on Oct. 16 that Rocco Carzo and Kevin Czepiel will serve as the team's co-captains for the 2012-13 season. The senior forwards have each played in over 90 career games and donned the "C"s for the first time on Oct. when the Minutemen took the ice vs. #3 Boston College. Carzo scored twice in that contest, his first career multi-goal game.

HE-Men- UMass returns three of its top-four point produc-ers from 2011-12, including juniors Conor Sheary and Michael Pereira who con-tributed 35 points (12g, 23a) and 34 points (17g, 17a) last season, respectively.- Both are among the top returning scorers in Hockey East this season as Sheary

is tied for ninth on the list and Pereira is tied for 11th.- Among the league’s top returning goal scorers, Pereira ranks fourth.

44 Back For More- Junior Joel Hanley is coming off a stellar soph-omore campaign that saw him post 25 points (7g, 18a) and record a +12 rating.- Hanley ranked fifth in defensemen scoring in Hockey East in 2011-12 and was third among the Minutemen in assists. He was one of three UMass players to see action in all 36 games last season, joining T.J. Syner and Conor Sheary.

Settling In - The Minutemen open up the 2012-13 cam-paign by playing 11 of their first 15 games in the friendly confines of the Mullins Center. - Over the last 109 games at Mullins, UMass is 57-38-14 (.587) including a 14-3-4 mark in 2006-07. All-time, UMass is 143-136-34 in the Mull-ins Center including a 87-118-26 record among Hockey East foes. - The 2011-12 campaign got off to an especial-ly good start as the Minutemen began 7-0-3 at home prior to their Jan. 27 loss to #11 UMass Lowell. The last such start to a season was in 2007-08 when the Minutemen were 4-0-3 to start the season before falling on Dec. 8 to #7 New Hampshire. UMass finished 2011-12 with a mark of 9-4-3 on home ice.

Staying Put- UMass will not venture very far from Amherst in 2012-13, with its furthest road trip just a shade over 300 miles, a single game at Maine on Nov. 16.- The Minutemen will leave the Commonwealth just once over the first two months of the sea-son as their only other away contests during that span are at Boston University, Boston College and Northeastern.

Junior Mint?- UMass’ 13-man junior class has produced nearly 300 points in two-plus seasons as Min-utemen. - As a group, they have logged 107 goals and 185 assists, led by Michael Pereira’s 59 career points. Conor Sheary and Joel Hanley follow with 50 and 44, respectively.

13 Feet Of Defense- UMass boasts one of the most imposing defen-sive parings in Hockey East as the only team in the conference with two players over 6-foot-5. - Look for 6’6” Adam Phillips and 6’7” Oleg Yevenko to see time on the ice together this sea-son. Phillips scored 10 goals as a freshman in 2010-11. Yevenko played in 33 games in his first collegiate campaign last year.

A Sloth of Bruins- With the addition of freshmen Connor Doherty and K.J. Tiefenwerth, UMass now has four for-mer members of the Boston Junior Bruins, join-ing junior Colin Shea and sophomore Andrew Tegeler.- Tiefenwerth has also been reunited with an-other former teammate as he and current junior Michael Pereira helped Avon Old Farms to a New England Division I Prep Championship in 2009-10.- With the Junior Bruins, Tiefenwerth was named the EJHL Rookie of the Year in 2010-11 after log-ging 57 points. In 2011-12, he ranked third in the EJHL with 77 points.

Vs. Ranked Teams- UMass was 7-9-1 last season against ranked teams with wins over #1 Boston College (11/15), #17 Yale (12/7), #13 Cornell (12/29), #4 Boston College (1/13), #1 Boston University (2/10, at #11 Maine (2/18) and vs. #12 Merrimack (3/2). In 2010-11, the Minutemen posted an 0-16-3 re-cord against ranked teams.- UMass record of 9-8-0 in 2009-10 was the pro-gram’s best all-time record against ranked foes. UMass had wins over #2 Boston University (Oct. 18), #9 Yale (Nov. 19), #18/17 Vermont (Nov. 24, Jan. 23), vs. #18 Union (12/29), a pair over #15 UMass Lowell (1/15-16), and a pair of wins at #17 Maine (3/5-6). - All-time, UMass is 61-209-24 against ranked opponents including a 6-7-2 record at neutral sites and a 9-25-4 record against non-confer-ence teams.- UMass posted its fourth-ever win over a #1-ranked team, its first-ever on the road, on Feb. 10, 2012, 3-2 at Boston University. It was the squad’s second over a #1 on the season. On Nov. 5, 2011, the Minutemen earned a 4-2 vic-tory over Boston College in the Mullins Center. Previously, UMass had defeated then #1-ranked Boston University, 5-1, on Nov. 14, 2008 - also at the Mullins Center. The first came in 1994-95 with a 4-2 win over #1 Maine on Jan. 28. In the modern era, UMass is 4-13-1 against teams ranked #1.

Tough To Blank- The Minutemen were tough to hold off the scoreboard in 2011-12, as the squad was shut out just once on the year, 4-0 at UMass Lowell on Nov. 19, 2011. - UMass scored two or more goals in 33 of 36 games in 2011-12 and ranked fifth in Hockey East in scoring offense with 3.17 goals per-game.

UMass Adds Transfer Dongara- In addition to the squad's four in coming fresh-men, UMass has also welcomed a transfer to the fold, forward Rob Dongara who comes to Amherst from Northeastern and will sit out 2012-13 per NCAA transfer rules.- Dongara, who will have two seasons of eligibili-ty with the Minutemen, skated in 36-of-38 games as a freshman at Northeastern in 2010-11 and

totaled 14 points on six goals and eight assists.- Scored his first career goal in the Beanpot in short-handed fashion for the Huskies against Boston College in the Beanpot finals; it was such a great goal, it debuted to the nation as the #7 Play of the Day on SportsCenter. Schedule Update- UMass’ games against Providence, originally scheduled for Jan. 11-12, will swap locations to avoid a scheduling conflict with women's basket-ball's home game versus George Washington. The Minutemen will now play at home on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. vs. the Friars, while Sat-urday's contest, originally slated to be played in Amherst, will take place in Providence, R.I.

Quick Wins Cup- Former Minuteman Jonathan Quick was award-ed the Conn Smythe Trophy after leading the Los Angeles Kings to the franchise's first Stan-ley Cup Championship following the squad's 6-1 series-clinching victory over the New Jersey Devils back in June. Quick, the first UMass play-er to win the Stanley Cup,became just the third American to collect the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.- Quick allowed only 29 goals in the Kings' 20 playoff games, including just seven in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals as he stopped 125 of 132 shots. He was 16-4 in net during the post-season with a 1.41 goals against average and a .946 save percentage.- The Vezina Trophy finalist started a person-al-best 69 games during the 2011-12 regular season and posted 35 of the Kings' 40 wins. Quick logged an NHL-leading 10 shutouts and ranked second in the League with a 1.95 goals-against average and fifth with a .929 save per-centage. All three marks were franchise single season records, as well.- At UMass, Quick led the Minutemen to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 while posting team single-season records with 19 wins, 37 appearances, 1,046 saves and 2,224 minutes played. He finished his sopho-more season with a 19-12-5 record, three shut-outs, a. 2.16 goals-against average (tied for 11th in the nation) and a .929 save percentage (fifth in the nation). That season, he became UMass' fifth All-American selection earning second-team honors. He still holds program career records for save percentage (.926), goals against average (2.40) and saves per game (28.96). Kostka Claims Calder- UMass hockey alum Mike Kostka scored twice and added an assist as the Nofolk Admirals completed their sweep of the Toronto Marlies to capture the 2012 Calder Cup. Kostka, for a second straight game, scored the game-winner for Norfolk, who defeated the Marlies, 6-1, in the series-clinching game four.- Kostka, who turned pro following his senior season with the Minutemen in 2007, totaled six goals and six assists over 18 postseason games. The defenseman had 32 points on sev-en goals and 25 assists in 52 regular season contests with the Admirals in 2011-12.- Kostka became first Minuteman to win the Calder Cup since Matt Anderson took home the title with the Chicago Wolves in 2007-08. - All told, over the last five years, three different UMass hockey alums have played in the AHL's championship series with Casey Wellman lead-ing the Houston Aeros to the Cup finals in 2011-12.

UMASS-BOSTON UNIVERSITY SERIES FACTS

About The Terriers- After a pair of single game weekends to open the season, Boston Uni-versity is currently 1-1-0 on the season following a 4-2 victory over Provi-dence and a 4-1 setback to No. 15 New Hampshire.- Cason Hohmann and Evan Rodrigues have been responsible for six of the team's 13 points thus far with a goal and an assist and three assists, respectively.- Matt O'Connor and Sean Maguire have both seen action in net, Each making their collegiate debuts following the graduation of Kieran Millan.- The Terriers posted a record of 23-15-1 last season and finished tied for second in Hockey East with a mark of 17-9-1. BU lost to Maine in the Hockey East semifinals but earned an at-large NCAA berth and finished 11th in both national polls.- This weekend's contests mark the 66th and 67th meeting between UMa-ss and BU, a series that dates back to Jan. 16, 1920. HEAD COACH JOHN MICHELETTOCareer Record (Entering 2012-2013): First Season As Head CoachRecord at Massachusetts (Entering 2012-2013): First SeasonAlma Mater: Dartmouth ’90John Micheletto, a 21-year coaching veteran who spent the last nine seasons at Hockey East rival Vermont including the past five seasons as associate head coach, was named the UMass men’s ice hockey program’s 13th head coach on July 16, 2012.

“After our meetings with John and our consultations with those in the col-lege hockey community, we are thrilled to announce him as our new head coach,” said Director of Athletics John McCutcheon. “John brings a wealth of coaching experience, is a talented recruiter, understands the Hockey East Association, and certainly has a strong familiarity with the UMass hockey program.”

Micheletto began his tenure at Vermont in 2003-04 when the Catamounts were still members of the ECAC. He helped UVM through its transition into Hockey East in 2005-06 with his time in Burlington highlighted by a trip to the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four. Since he joined the Vermont staff, 12 different Catamounts have been selected in the NHL Draft including rising sopho-more Connor Brickley who was taken in the 2010 second round (the third highest draft pick in program history) and Viktor Stalberg of the Chicago Blackhawks. In all, over 20 former players have gone on to play profession-al hockey in the United States, Canada and Europe.

In June 2006, Micheletto was promoted to associate head coach at Ver-mont and served as the program’s director of recruiting.

Before moving to the collegiate level, Micheletto spent five years (1991-96) in the prep ranks at The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. Micheletto served as the Dean of Students, an instructor of English, and a dorm parent. As the head coach of the hockey team, he helped resurrect the program during his tenure. While at The Hill, he recruited and coached former Vermont goaltender James Tierney ‘98.

Micheletto has been heavily involved with USA Hockey during his career both on the national and international level. He spent six summers as a coach for the Atlantic District Select teams that competed at USA Hockey’s Junior Olympic Festival. In August of 2000, he was selected as an assis-tant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Select Team which competed at the Four Nations Tournament in Kezmarok, Slovakia. Micheletto helped guide Team USA to five wins before falling to Canada in the championship game.

A 1984 graduate of the Milton (Mass.) Academy, Micheletto served as team captain and boarding school president. Micheletto then attended Dart-mouth College, graduating in 1990 with a degree in English modified with Education. He pursued a professional hockey career, which included stops with the Enschede Lions of the Netherlands First Division and the Erie (Pa.) Golden Blades of the now defunct Atlantic Coast Hockey League.

Micheletto and his wife Melinda were married in the summer of 2004. They have a cat and two rescued dogs.

ASSISTANT COACH LEN QUESNELLEAt UMass; Ninth SeasonAlma Mater: Princeton ’88Len Quesnelle is entering his ninth season as an assistant coach of the Minutemen in 2012-13 after serving as the head coach at Prince-ton for four seasons.

During Quesnelle’s four years at Princeton, he held the distinction of being the only coach in school history to lead the Tigers to consecu-tive seasons of .500-or-better records in the

Eastern College Athletic Conference. Princeton posted a 9-9-4 confer-ence record in 2000-01 and played to a 10-10-2 mark in 2001-02.

Quesnelle spent 12 years as an assistant coach at Princeton before be-ing named the program’s 14th head coach in the spring of 2000. He spent the previous nine years as the senior assistant coach on Don Ca-hoon’s staff.

In Quesnelle’s second year as head coach, the Tigers put together a late-season run to finish in a three-way tie with Brown and Colgate for sixth place in the conference standings. Princeton earned the sixth seed going into the playoffs, bettering the predictions of both the preseason coaches and media polls. The coaches had the Tigers pegged to finish 11th, while the media picked them to finish seventh.

In his inaugural season as head coach, Quesnelle led the Tigers to a 10-16-5 overall record, including a 9-9-4 ECAC mark. It was only the sixth time since 1961-62 that the Tigers finished with a .500-or-better ECAC record.

Following his graduation from Princeton in 1988, Quesnelle remained with the Tigers as an assistant coach on Jim Higgins’ staff while pursuing a business career with a consulting firm in Princeton.

In 1991 his familiarity with team personnel and the recruiting process at Princeton helped to ease the transition into the Cahoon era.

A native of Bramalea, Ontario, Quesnelle was a standout defenseman at Princeton, appearing in 106 games and earning All-Ivy League honors as well as the Class of 1941 Championship Award for winning spirit. He played junior hockey for the Bramalea Blues from 1982-84.

Quesnelle has served as director of the Princeton University Hockey Camp and is a frequent speaker and instructor at camps throughout North America.

He and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Rémi and Georgia.

ASSISTANT COACH JOEY GASPARINIAt UMass; First SeasonAlma Mater: Vermont ’06After three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, 2006 University of Vermont graduate Joey Gasparini has joined the UMa-ss hockey staff as an assistant coach. Gaspa-rini will begin his first season with the Minute-men this fall alongside former UVM colleague and new UMass head coach John Micheletto.

“In adding Joey Gasparini to the Massachu-setts staff, we’ve gotten a rare `duel threat;’ a terrific recruiter with a keen eye for winners and an outstanding teacher of the game,” said Michelet-to. “I’ve witnessed Joey’s development throughout his professional ca-reer and consider him a huge get for our program. He grew up watching how to put championship teams together and will bring this knowledge here to Amherst. Joey and his wife Amanda, along with their daughter Adriana, are a tremendous addition to the Minuteman family.”

At Vermont, Gasparini played an integral role in recruiting and managed the Catamounts’ forwards with a heavy emphasis on skill and individual development. In 2011-12, he worked alongside Micheletto with UVM’s power play unit, which saw nearly a 30% increase in scoring from the previous campaign.

Gasparini returned to Vermont as an assistant coach in September of 2009 after serving as the Director of Scouting and Recruiting for Achieve Sports Management in Chicago, Ill. In his two years with Achieve Sports Management, he oversaw all aspects of recruiting, including player iden-tification and evaluation.

Following graduation from UVM, Gasparini spent the 2006-07 season serving as a regional scout with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders in the United States Hockey League. The following year he joined the Fargo Force in the USHL as a regional scout.

Gasparini played for the Catamounts from 2002 to 2006 and was elected as an assistant captain his senior season. Over 128 career games, the forward totaled 34 points on 12 goals and 22 assists. He was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team in 2006 and was an ECAC All-Aca-demic Team selection in 2004 and 2005.

A native of Grand Forks, N.D., Gasparini graduated from Vermont with a degree in Economics and Political Science. His father John “Gino” Gas-parini is a former head coach of the men’s hockey team at the University of North Dakota. He and his wife Amanda were married in the summer of 2010 and have a daughter, Adriana.

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS JOHN GOBEILAt UMass: First SeasonAlma Mater: Vermont ’09Vermont graduate John Gobeil will joined the UMass staff as the Director of Hockey Oper-ations in the summer of 2012 and enters his first season with the Minutemen in 2012-13.

“There is no better person than John Gobeil to become our program’s first full-time Director of Hockey Operations,” said head coach John Micheletto. “His knowledge of the game and

of Hockey East, along with his strong work ethic and organizational skills, will be an immediate asset to the coaching and support staff. Also, his easy-going nature and can-do attitude makes him a welcome addition to the UMass family. I feel very fortunate to be able to round out an already unbelievable staff with the likes of John Gobeil.”

Gobeil comes to UMass from the University of Vermont where he served as Director of Hockey Operations for his alma mater from 2009-2012. As an undergrad at UVM, he was a student equipment manager for the Catamounts from 2006-2009 and earned his degree in Community En-trepreneurship.

A native of Derby, Vt., Gobeil was a two-year captain at North Country Union High School. He was named all-state as a senior and played in the senior all-star game.
