NOTESTO RECAP: UC Davis (3-2) took a week off from competition after back-to-back road double-dual meets in Southern California on Nov. 2 and 3... The Aggies split a meet with UCLA and Washington State on that Friday, claiming a 139-119 victory over the Cougars while falling by a similar 135-119 score to the host Bruins... Less than 24 hours later, UC Davis swept two MPSF foes, beating Loyola Marymount (151-111) and San Diego (167-96) at LMU’s Burns Aquatic Center... Samantha Shellem captured the team’s first MPSF Athlete of the Week award for her performances in those two meets... She won the 500 free in both meets, hitting a 4:58.04 at UCLA... Shellem’s 1:49.99 in the 200 free already moves her into fifth in UC Davis history... Junior Liliana Al-varez won both breaststroke events at the UCLA-WSU meet, finish-ing the 100 in 1:03.71 and the 200 in 2:20.14... Her 200 breast time was almost three seconds faster than runner-up Emily Weir of UCLA (2:22.99).

MPSF LEADERS: Shellem continues to lead the conference in the 200 free (1:49.99) and 500 free (4:58.04)... Her 1,000 best of 10:21.55, set at the LMU meet on Nov. 3, ranks fourth in the league; while her 400 IM mark of 4:27.87 (at UCLA) is third... Freshman Marissa Brown pac-es all MPSF performers in the 1,000 free with her 10:14.99 at UCLA... She also ranks 4th in the 500 at 5:01.25... Alvarez went 1:03.71 in the 100 breast at UCLA, also good for the conference lead... Her 200 breast time of 2:19.16 remains 4th in the MPSF... Junior Haley Porter is third in the 100 free at 51.70, set in the Oct. 27 dual with San Jose State... Sophomore Hilary Hunt also holds a Top 5 conference rank, sitting 5th in the 100 back at 57.43... The Aggies also rank 2nd in the 200 medley relay: the foursome of Hunt, Alvarez, Megan Leung and Porter went 1:44.60 in the SJSU dual.

UP NEXT: UC Davis competes in its final dual meet of the fall season, hosting Nevada for a Friday afternoon meet at Schaal Aquatics Center... The 200 medley relay will kick off the dual at 2 p.m.... NEVADA (3-1) won its third straight dual meet at home against New Mexico, scoring a 160.5-139.5 victory... The Wolf Pack scored the majority of its points from its international student-athletes... Senior and Beijing-native Mengjiao Mi won the 200 free (1:54.72), 100 free (52.47) and 500 free (5:08.99) for the maximum 27 individual points... She also swam the second leg of the second-place 200 free relay (1:37.64)... Junior diver Grace Huang of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan won on both boards, scoring 330.75 on 3-meter, 322.43 on 1-meter.

HEAD COACH BARBARA JAHN“Nevada has a new coach [Abby Steketee] who is really turning the program around, so I think we’ll see some very good races. They always have a strong diving program, which will be a really good challenge for our divers. We’ll swim a lot of events and give people a lot of opportu-nities to race because we’ll use this meet as a mark to choose our travel squad to Missouri. We have several bits of criteria, so we want to give them opportunities to race and get selected.”

“We’re eager to see how we do. It has been a while since we’ve compet-ed and the team has been focusing a lot on studying. A lot of midterms and a lot of papers.”

“I think it helps to spread out the types of competition we have. Dual meets serve a purpose, invitationals serve a purpose and our shave-and-taper serves a purpose. If we have a good mixture of that, we’re able to shape our training to be more prepared for our championship at the end.”
