The Northeast Conference Fan Guide you’re reading is designed to provide an overview of the league’s 12 member institutions, 200-plus coaches and over 4,900 Division I student-athletes.

Sporting a rich tradition, the Northeast Conference has grown into a burgeoning 23-sport Division I conference. Now entering its 32nd year, the NEC looks forward to the 2012-13 season with great anticipation and high expectations, highlighted by the launch of our NEC Front Row digital network.

Headquartered in Somerset, NJ, the Northeast Conference encompasses six states and a variety of diverse locations. The NEC’s geographic footprint is centered within the New York Metropolitan area, but also extends to western Penn-sylvania, Maryland and New England, with institutions in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

When it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the conference is consistent - to provide its members the opportunity to participate in qual-ity competition at the Division I level while operating programs that are fully integrated in the academic mission of each institution. Northeast Conference athletic programs truly focus on putting the student in the term student-athlete. During the 2011-12 academic year, NEC student-athletes averaged a record-high 3.16 GPA and more than half of the league’s student-athletes were named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll. Likewise, NEC graduation rates for student-athletes are consistently higher than those of non-athletes.

On the field of play, the NEC continues to enjoy success on the national stage, with automatic access to 15 different NCAA championships. In the last year alone, Fairleigh Dickinson advanced to the Finals of the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship and was one of nine teams ranked in the top-20 nationally in the sport. The NEC also featured nationally ranked teams in football, men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse. In men’s and women’s basketball, a record six teams competed in the postseason.

We hope the information contained in this Fan Guide will give you a better understanding of the Northeast Conference. Whether you’re an admin-istrator, coach, student-athlete, prospective student-athlete, parent or spectator, we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Noreen MorrisCommissioner

WELCOME NEC FANS!

SPORTSMANSHIP & RESPECTNortheast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsman-ship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor. As such, the NEC Team Sportsmanship Award program recognizes those teams and student-athletes who best exemplify these traits in the spirit of competition. For the first time every NEC institution had at least one team honored for its commitment to sportsmanship during the 2011-12 academic year. Saint Francis (PA) finished the year with a league-high five NEC Team Sportsmanship awards.

The NEC continues to participate in the NCAA’s Respect Campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through education, communication and enforcement when problems arise.

IN THE CLASSROOMAlong with their impressive athletic achievements, Northeast Conference student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Overall, NEC student-athletes averaged a record-high 3.16 GPA for the 2011-12 academic year and a record 560 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll with GPAs of 3.75 or higher. Likewise, 11 of the league’s 12 core member institu-tions finished the year with at least a 3.0 GPA, led by Robert Morris, which won the NEC Institutional Academic Award with a 3.28 GPA. Additionally, the NEC had 40 teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.

The NEC has embraced new media to convey its message to a growing fan base. With the support of league Presidents and administrators, the Conference will launch NEC Front Row and a companion mobile app at the start of the 2012-13 season. This multimedia initiative will serve as a vehicle for the NEC to pres-ent a unified, branded message, while at the same time showcasing three key components of University life at each member institution: athletics, academics and work in the community. Every NEC basketball and football game, a slate of NEC championships and hundreds of other live events will air at no charge on the Front Row portal. Each institution will have its own co-branded page on the site, where fans will be able to access live events, highlights, coaches shows and related on-demand content.

Page 5: 2012-13 NEC Fan Guide

IN THE COMMUNITYThe NEC, its member institutions and student-athletes have made community involvement an important piece of its mission.

Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, NEC schools logged over 26,000 hours of ser-vice in their local communities. For the second straight year, Sacred Heart was awarded the NEC Building Communities Award, which recognizes the institution which demonstrates the highest dedication to making an impact in the commu-nity through the efforts of its student-athletes, coaches and administrators.

The Northeast Conference Student-Athlete Ad-visory Committee (SAAC) also made its annual visit to the Children’s Cancer Recovery Founda-tion in Hershey, PA this past February and par-ticipated in a “Penny Wars” fundraiser to benefit the organization.
