Cal U appears poised to make a fourth-straight appearance at the NCAA National Championships following an impressive fall campaign. Head coach MerriLyn Gibbs features the most veteran team in program history with four seniors returning from a team that recorded the best finish in program history at the NCAA National Championships. In the fall, the Vulcans captured their fourth title at the PSAC Championships in the last five years, winning the event by 23 strokes. Cal U finished either first or second in every invitational and boasted the medalist at three events, including the league championships. Senior Maria Lopez has emerged as the team’s top player this season following the graduation of two-time NGCA All-American and two-time PSAC Athlete of the Year Dianne Luke. Last year, Lopez posted a top-10 finish at the NCAA Regional Championships before tying for 13th overall at the NCAA National Championships. She continued her strong play in the fall, earning medalist honors twice and finishing among the top five on the leader board at all four invitationals. A three-time All-PSAC honoree, Lopez became the third Cal U golfer to win the individual title at the league championships. Fellow senior Kim Thomas returns after earning All-PSAC First-Team honors in each of the last two years. She placed third on the team at last season’s NCAA Regional and National Championships. In the fall, the Maryland native captured medalist honors for the first time in her career while playing in a field of 80-plus golfers at the Grand Valley State Invitational. Thomas then placed fifth overall at the PSAC Championships for the second-straight year. Senior Lorena Aranda is off to the best start of her career, ranking second on the team in scoring

average during the fall. An All-PSAC honoree in 2010 and 2011, she rebounded from an inconsistent junior campaign by placing second overall at two events. Aranda finished second overall and four strokes back of Lopez at the PSAC Championships, marking the third time in her career that she has finished in the top 10 at the PSAC Championships. After playing in every event last year, senior Inez del Rosario showed marked improvement in the fall. She finished third overall in a field of 70 golfers at Indianapolis before tying her career best by placing ninth on the leader board at the PSAC Championships. Junior Marine Verchere provides experienced depth after playing in a career-high six invitationals last season, including the league championships. With four seniors on the roster, Gibbs began preparing for the immanent future by featuring her largest freshman class since 2009. A native of Canada, Cara Vanderham moved into the Cal U lineup as a true freshman. She played in all four events during the fall, finishing in the top 10 twice. Vanderham tied for seventh on the leader board at the PSAC Championships, becoming the first freshman to play at the event since the current group of seniors in 2009. Freshman Sammie Faraghan made her collegiate debut as an individual in the fall and placed fourth overall, while classmate Jonah Ilagan joined the program at semester break. Ilagan is from the same province in the Philippines as del Rosario. After a stellar fall season, the veteran Vulcans will again be a contender at the regional championships while looking to qualify for the NCAA National Championships for a fourth-straight season.

HEAD COACH

MerriLyn Gibbs has led the Vulcans to unprecedented success with three-straight team appearances in the NCAA National Championships. Gibbs has also guided Cal U to four PSAC Championships in the last five years. Gibbs has the program off to another strong start in the 2012-13 season. In the fall, the Vulcans finished either first or second in all four invitationals, highlighted by winning the PSAC Championships. Last year, Cal U recorded its highest-ever showing at the NCAA National Championships by finishing sixth in the team standings. Senior Dianne Luke repeated as a NGCA All-American and PSAC Athlete of the Year and was one of three Vulcans to earn All-PSAC First-Team honors. Cal U also excelled in the classroom, as it was honored for boasting the highest team GPA at the 2012 NCAA National Championships. In the fall of 2010, the Vulcans captured a third-straight league title. The following spring, Cal U finished seventh at the NCAA National Championships after placing second at the NCAA Regional Championships. Following the season, Gibbs was selected the PSAC Coach of the Year after boasting five All-PSAC selections.

During the 2009-10 season, Cal U made its first-ever team appearance in the NCAA National Championships. That same season, the Vulcans won the PSAC Championships by a dominating 48 strokes and finished third at the NCAA Regional Championship. While with the Vulcans, Gibbs has mentored Simone DeSouza and Dianne Luke, who are the most accomplished golfers in school history. Originally, Gibbs served as the head coach of the Cal U men’s and women’s golf programs in 2005. The women’s program was a new sport, while the men’s team was reinstated after being eliminated decades earlier. Gibbs previously served as the men’s and women’s golf coach at Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D. While at Dakota Wesleyan, Gibbs guided the men’s and women’s teams to top-five finishes in six of seven tournaments in the 2004-05 season, including one tournament title for each team. Gibbs, who graduated from BYU in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in American studies, has worked at three golf clubs in Idaho and Utah. She was the assistant pro and director of all teaching programs at Purple Sage Golf Course in Caldwell, Idaho. She was also

the Idaho tournament director of the U.S. Kids National Championship. She began her collegiate career at Boise State, where she was the medalist at two tournaments her freshman season. She was named the 1996 Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year while at Boise State. She then transferred to BYU and was a three-year member of the program. Gibbs, who completed her master’s degree in sport management from Cal U, is a Class A PGA Professional. She was the Idaho Amateur Player of the Year and two-time Idaho State Match Play Champion. She also twice won the Idaho Tournament of Champions title and was the bronze medalist in the Idaho State Stroke Play Tournament.

One of the most decorated golfers in program history, Dianne Luke enters her first year as an intern assistant coach at Cal U. Luke was a two-time NGCA All-American and earned All-PSAC First-Team honors all four years with the program. She was named the PSAC Freshman of

the Year in 2009 before receiving PSAC Athlete of the Year honors as both a junior and senior. Luke helped the Vulcans capture three PSAC Championships and earn three-straight team appearances in the NCAA National Championships. She played at the national event all four years in her career, highlighted by a

sixth-place overall finish as a junior. Luke earned her degree from Cal U in sport management with a concentration in professional golf management and a minor in business.

Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development. American Democracy Project (ADP) is focused on producing graduates who are committed to being active, involved citizens in their communities. The project helps engage students in activities and projects designed to increase their intellectual understanding and commitment to participate in the civic life of the United States.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

The Vulcans led NCAA Division II and ranked sixth overall among all institutions with a school-record 13 Capital One AcademicAll-Americans during the 2011-12 academic year.

A total of 209 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Fall 2012 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll.

A record of 175 student-athletes from Cal U, representing all sports, were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-12 academic year.

A total of 31 student-athletes boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2012 semester.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

ACTING PRESIDENT On May 16, 2012, Geraldine Jones was named acting president of California University of Pennsylvania. Jones graduated from California State College in 1971 and began her career in education as a second-grade teacher in the Albert Gallatin School District, in Uniontown, Pa. She returned to California in 1974, serving as program director for Upward Bound for 20 years and as chair of the Department of Academic Development Services for 11 years. She was associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services for two years before serving as dean from 2000-2008. In July 2008, she was named provost and vice president for academic affairs. A member of the Cal U Alumni Association board of directors, Jones has received numerous honors, including the Cal U Alumni Association’s John R. Gregg Award for Loyalty and Service, the Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Service Award, and the Community Service Award given by the Minority Students Association at Penn State Fayette. In 2010 Jones was one of 50 Women of Excellence honored by the New Pittsburgh Courier, one of the oldest and most prestigious black newspapers in the United States. Jones is a lifelong member of Mt. Zion AME Church of Brownsville, Pa., where she has been the church pianist since age 14. She has been married to Jeffrey B. Jones for 37 years; they have two adult daughters and a granddaughter.
