What follows are my remarks at Temple’s Annual Meeting, held in April. I’m obviously delighted that the congregation chose to engage Rabbi Bellush, and that we’ll have the opportunity to serve you together beginning in just a few weeks! The photo was taken just minutes before Sandra officially became “Rabbi Bellush,” at the Plum Street Temple in Cincinnati on May 21.

Let me begin by offering my gratitude to Susan Jaffee, Buddy Schwartz, and my wife Alanna, all of whom serve on the Temple staff and will be leaving that role in the next few months. Each of them has brought energy, joy, diligence, and wisdom to their tenure.

I also want to thank each of our outgoing officers and trustees, and particularly our President, David Kern, for their leadership. We are lucky to have people of talent and passion leading our congregation.

Sally, Grace, Elisa, Stacy, Frank, Flor, Ramona, Linda, and our Religious School Faculty – everyone who works with me in a professional capacity – is deserving of our thanks as well. Temple would be so much poorer without their presence.

Ed, Ellen and Tina: Your ongoing commitment to fostering religious and educational growth in the congregation, is, in the truest and most original sense of the word, marvelous. I marvel at what you do. Thank you.

I love the fact that we schedule our annual congregational meeting in the springtime, around Passover. I particularly love it when it falls before the holiday, as it does this year. Partly, I suppose, it’s because a “late” Passover is a harbinger of a “late” High Holiday season, with more time after the summer to prepare ourselves for the tremendous obligations of prayer, repentance and charity to which that season calls us. Mostly, I think it’s because my mind is in Pesach-mode, the Seders are almost upon us, and there’s a note of hope, of promise, in the air.

My own sense of hopefulness is most definitely bound up with the next item on this meeting’s agenda. I am so glad that Temple’s leadership saw fit to explore the possibility of us returning to the ranks of those congregations served by a clergy team after a nine-year hiatus, and I’m thoroughly delighted with the prospect that, in just a few minutes, Sandra Bellush might be called to join us in El Paso. I will leave it to Bob Krasne to speak to some of the details of the process, the

financial concerns, and more. I simply want to share with you my own vision of what it will mean for us to have two rabbis.

I stress: us. Because having two rabbis is not, in the main, about me. I’ve spent a fair amount of time gently correcting that notion as people have spoken to me about this possibility. “Rabbi, I’m so glad we’re finally getting you some help.” Or, at the other end of the spectrum, “Temple’s not big enough to need two rabbis,” as if the number of rabbis a congregation “needs” is the result of a one-size-fits-all equation. Both of these takes on the situation miss the larger picture, which is that adding a second rabbi is, in a certain way (and only in this way!), a bit like having a second child: one plus one equals more than two.

The word “synergy” is years past its shelf-life as a buzzword in business and in the non-profit world, but the idea was beautifully expressed thousands of years ago, by King Solomon (Prov 27:17): “As iron sharpens iron, so does a person sharpen his fellow.” This proverb was picked up by Rabbi Bar Chanina, whose teaching is remembered in the pages of the Talmud (BT Taanit 7a): “Two students of Torah sharpen each other as they study the Jewish path.” Having another colleague in the building, on the bima, in the classroom, will make me sharper, and better, and that’s to your benefit as much as my own.

I’ve said to many of you, I don’t expect to put in any less effort as part of a rabbinical team. I do expect to work smarter, and with more focus. I expect that we will return, in short order, to a level of programming that we enjoyed several years ago, when two rabbis filled the pulpit together, taught together, pastored together, and dreamed up new things together.

People have asked me “what will the new rabbi do, in particular,” by which they’ve meant, which areas of Temple life will he or she take on. I

certainly have some thoughts about where our particular candidate might excel, by virtue of her own unique set of gifts and attributes, and how they complement my own. But I’ve answered that question, again and again, by asking the questioner not to discount what it will mean for us to simply have two rabbis sharing the preaching and teaching. Hours currently spent preparing two sermons and a Torah study each week are cut roughly in half, and the time saved – I’d conservatively estimate it at a dozen or more hours a week – may be reinvested into even more extensive pastoral care, and into new and innovative programming. The steps we’ve taken into the world of Jewish Spirituality may become bolder. The work we began last weekend with the Mussar Tradition may flourish. Our new rabbi’s own passions and interest will no doubt find a receptive audience, as well. And you’ll let us know what you’d like to see on the calendar, and with your help, we’ll make it happen.

Let me speak very frankly: If you’ve felt like we’ve been “treading water” a bit the last couple of years, you’re not alone. I’ve felt it, too. I came here thirteen years ago as part of a rabbinical team, and always understood that I’d be part of one again someday. What I perhaps didn’t understand so well as a thirty-three year old when Rabbi Weiss retired and became our Rabbi Emeritus were my own limitations of time and energy, and what attempting to serve this Temple as a solo rabbi would mean for my family, my well-being, and my sense of joy in the rabbinate. I’ve learned all those things now, and I’m a better rabbi for the journey. The step we are poised to take is coming just in time, and I expect that it will mean great things for this congregation and for Jewish life in El Paso.

Rabbi Bach

June 6: Having fun with movement. We’ll play theater games that will help mind get in touch with body. June 13: Discovering your creative self. Through monologue and team play, we’ll learn ways of unleashing our imaginations. June 20: Learning to trust. We’ll play games that help us get past self-doubt so that we can trust others and ourselves.

Alan Morinis introduced our community to the study and practice of Mussar when he vis-ited in April. His inspiring talks and sessions have led to the formation of a Mussar study group at Temple Mount Sinai that will soon be starting (our first gathering will be in early Au-gust), and which you are invited to join.

"Everyday Holiness" is the name of the course that The Mussar Institute is providing as the curriculum your group will follow. The course consists of 15 sessions, each of which focuses on teachings and practices that help develop the inner traits that lead to holiness and wholeness (such as gratitude, generosity, patience, honor, truth, etc.). The course requires access to a computer to receive materials and to do some simple exercises.

Separate materials are provided for studying with a partner and in the group itself. All ma-terials are in English and no knowledge of Hebrew is required. Click on www.mussarinstitute.org for more details about the "Everyday Holiness" course.

The course costs $72 including all materials. Checks payable to "Temple Mount Sinai" can be sent to the temple office. Please send questions about the group and course directly to Alan Morinis at [email protected].

Growing in Body, Heart, and Spirit Each week (for the most part), we offer opportunities for growth in body, mind and heart. Not so much “classes” as “opportunities for practice,” our yoga, meditation, and text study are at the core of our adult learning and growth. There’s great benefit from attending regularly, but drop-ins are always welcome!

• Meditation, Tuesdays at 6 pm. These sessions take place every Tuesday evening at 6 pm in Krupp Chapel. Participants share a commitment to a regular meditation practice, and recognize that a group environment provides support for that prac-tice. Please consider joining us as we sit, focus and reflect. We will continue to sit through the month of June, and then take a break during July.

• Yoga Practice, Wednesdays at 9 am. Take a much needed break in your day for one hour of yoga on Wednesdays at 9 am. Anusara-Inspired™ teacher, Susan Jaf-fee, will lead you through a life-affirming, heart-oriented practice. This hour yoga session is suitable for yoga students of all levels. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring your own mat and yoga props (belt, block and yoga blankets). We will practice each week in June, and take a break during July.

• The Weekly Portion as a Vehicle for Spiritual Growth, Saturdays at 9:30 am. Every Saturday at 9:30 am, a diverse and lively group of participants gathers to study the weekly Torah portion through the lens of Hasidic spirituality. Rabbi Bach typically brings a text from one of the classics of Hasidic Torah commentary, in Hebrew and in translation, which serves as the starting point for our conversa-tion. We conclude in time for the 10:30 am Shabbat morning service. Bagels and coffee are provided, and all are welcome. Torah study will continue weekly throughout June and July.

Adult Hebrew, Tuesdays at 6 pm

Adult Hebrew — 6 pm, Tuesdays. The Adult Hebrew class continues to meet in the Zork Library at Temple on a different night of the week, Tuesday evenings from 6 pm to 7 pm. The students are progressing nicely with their reading and understanding of Hebrew and the weekly Torah portions. If you are interested in learning with us, please join us on Tuesday evenings. If you have any questions, feel free to call Ed Solomon at 525-4616.

Religious School Through their hard work, dedication, flexibility in programming changes, devotion to our students and love of Judaism, our faculty and substitute teachers have made this school year a remarkable one. Together we will continue to make positive changes for the upcoming Religious School year.

There are many people that help and support our Religious School throughout the year and we really appreciate their efforts. Thank you to Sylvia Krapin, Mary Ann Plaut, the Leffman Family, MRJ and the TMS Gift Shop. Thanks also to all of the parents who generously spend time helping during our special activities or making telephone calls, and to our TMS staff: Sally Parke, Frank Hernandez, Buddy Schwartz, Elisa Gluck and Ramona Pinales for their countless hours of assistance.

This year we continued with our CHAI curriculum (Torah, Avodah and G’Milut Chasadim) and the Mitkadem Hebrew curriculum, plus supplemental lessons (Israel, Shabbat, Jews in America, Jewish History, Jewish Holidays and much more.) We included a Holocaust curriculum and invited four Holocaust survivors to speak to our 7th and 8th grade students. We also had a Tu B’Shevat Model Seder for our 7th & 8th grade students, and a successful Cultural Celebration when we raised $1,200 for “A Package From Home” Special Forces Unit. We included Jewish Arts/Crafts and Cooking Enrichment sessions, an exceptional Mitzvah Day to donate needed items to the VNA Hospice, well attended Parent and Grandparent Days, and a Chanukah Family Event with B’nai Zion.

Your suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated, and Educational Director Grace Bir would love to hear from you regarding our Religious School programming.

Have a wonderful summer and don’t forget... the first day of Religious School 2011-2012 is August 28!

MSTY/mini‐MSTY Our end-of-the-year party will be at the home of Shelly and David Mansfield, 5550 Cory Drive, on Sunday, June 5th from 11am-1pm. It will be a POOL PARTY, so don’t forget to bring your swim suit and a towel. We will be saying goodbye to our seniors and to the old MSTY board, and welcoming the new MSTY board, the incoming freshmen and the incoming 6th graders. This party is for all current 5th-12th graders. We look forward to seeing old and new faces alike! This party will be our last event for the 2010-2011 school year. We’re excited about starting our new year in August, when the NFTY Leadership Training Institute will take place the weekend of August 26-28.

Have you been to Israel and always wanted to return? Have you yet to visit Israel and long to make a first trip? Would you like to “experience” Jewish history in many of the places where it was made? Would you like to meet the modern-day peoples of Is-rael?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Temple Mt. Sinai in-vites you to join us on our journey to Israel, January 1 – January 13, 2012.

We have designed an itinerary that focuses on Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, the wondrous Arava and Negev, and Eilat. The trip also includes an optional day-trip to the exquisite Nabatean city of Petra in Jordan.

The price for the land portion of this trip (excluding Petra) is $2550 per person (double occupancy rate). Group air travel is available from El Paso to Tel Aviv on Delta Air-lines for $1400. A refundable deposit of $200/person is due by June 15.

For an itinerary and registration form, or to ask any questions, please contact Alanna Bach at 328-6062 or [email protected].

Los Poblanos Ranch in Las Cruces to offer El Paso delivery – sign up now! Would you be interested in a weekly box with fresh, local and/or organic produce in-cluding locally grown greens, fruit and other vegetables? Are you looking for a way to reduce your carbon footprint while increasing your and your family’s health? Here’s the answer! Temple has offered some space on Friday afternoons for weekly de-liveries of Harvest Boxes from Los Poblanos Organic farm in Las Cruces, New Mex-ico. Each week’s box costs $28 (see the end of the article for the website and ordering in-formation) and includes different items each week, depending on what is in season and currently being harvested. Right now, the farm has asked us to gauge interest in a weekly El Paso delivery. If you can commit to buying a box (see their website for other fantastic items like meats, cheeses, milk, eggs and more!), please email [email protected] and let Charlie & Emily know that you’re interested in an El Paso delivery! Once they’ve heard from 15-20 families who can commit to a weekly order, they’ll commit to sending a van to Tem-ple once a week for delivery! As promised, here is the link to the farm’s website: www.nmorganics.com – click on the “pickup locations” link on the left-hand side of the page and a new page will open with the grocery and produce items listed along the left-hand side. If you have any questions about this farm, their products or anything from this article, feel free to contact Alison Westermann at [email protected] or 915-443-4084.

Assistive listening devices are available at the entrance to our chapel and sanctuary. Please ask a greeter for assistance. If you have inadvertently left Temple with one of these devices, please return it as soon as possible. These headsets are programmed to be used only in our Sanctuary and Chapel, and many of them have disappeared, meaning that they are not available for congregants who use them at services. If you find you have one of these (perhaps in that drawer with all the yarmulkes!), please return it to the Temple office so that it may be put back into service. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please remember to use your key tag each time you shop for groceries at Albert-sons. All you need to do is have the card scanned when you check out. Temple will earn 1% of your shopping total each time you scan the card, at no additional cost to you. If you need additional key tags, they are available in the Temple of-fice.

Albertson’s Cash‐Back Fundraiser

Landscaping Temple’s landscaping was greatly affected by the freeze in February and we want to share what is happening to care for our Temple grounds. We are actively watering all of the plants and trees on the property and working to complete repairs on the irrigation lines to insure that the plants receive appropriate water. We are encouraged to see new growth on some of the trees, but we will certainly lose some of them. We are continuing to water to give the plant material time to recover and then we will determine exactly what will need to be removed and to decide what will be replaced. In the short run, this will leave the landscape unsightly but it will give us the opportunity to replace only what is needed. We feel this is the most cost effective and reasonable option.

Our annual landscaping budget does not anticipate costs like this. Large landscaping projects are typically funded though donations to the "Landscaping Special Projects Fund.” We are asking that you think of the beauty of our grounds when making donations to Temple and consider the Landscape Fund to assist in making Temple the beautiful place it was in the past. Hopefully the grounds here may be renewed in the not too distant future.
