General-season huntThe statewide, general-season hunt will be held

May 231. I you are eligible to hunt, you can obtain

    a permit by visiting wildlife.utah.gov, a license

agent or a Division oce. For more inormation on

    purchasing a general-season permit, see page 12.

During the general season, you can hunt in any

area thats open to turkey hunting.

Despite hunters concerns that this hunt might

put too much pressure on Utahs turkeys, Divisionbiologists are confdent in the populations stability.

Even though we are putting more hunters in the

feld, we have not seen a negative eect on Utahs

turkey populations, says Dave Olsen, upland game

coordinator or the Division. Each hunter in Utah is

restricted to taking only one bearded turkeymost

o which are male. And emale turkeys in the state

are very successul at reproducing. The Division plans to oer a similar combination

    o limited-entry, youth and general-season turkey

    hunts in 2012.

WHICH TURKEY HUNT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?Check out your options and start planning today.

In the 2011 season, Utah will oer the same

turkey hunts that were available last year: a limited-

entry hunt, a youth hunt and a general-season hunt.

Limited-entry huntThe 2011 limited-entry hunt will be held

    April 928.

A limited number o permits are available or this

hunt, and you can only obtain a permit through the

states turkey hunt drawing. For more inormation on

applying or the drawing, see page 10.

Similar to last year, this seasons turkey hunt

will occur within regional boundaries. You can fndboundary descriptions on page 27 and regional

    maps at wildlife.utah.gov/maps.

The ollowing chart lists the number o available

    limited-entry permits in each region:

    Central 500

    Northeastern 250

    Northern 400

    Southeastern 250

    Southern 1,100

Fiteen percent o each regions limited-entry

permits are reserved or youth 15 years o age and

under. A youth who obtains a limited-entry permit

can only hunt the limited-entry season and cannot

hunt during the youth hunt or the general season.

To learn more about opportunities or youth, see

the inormation box on page 11.

Youth huntThe youth hunt will be held April 29May 1. This

hunt is open to hunters who will be 15 years o age

and younger on Jan. 27, 2011.

Permits will be available over the counter toany eligible youth who want to participate. They

can then hunt anywhere in the state thats open to

    turkey hunting.

I you are a young hunter who doesnt harvest a

turkey during the youth hunt, you can continue to

hunt during Utahs statewide general-season hunt.

    Participate in harvestsurvey

Ater the 2011 turkey season ends, theDivision may ask you to participate in an

    online turkey harvest survey.

Although this survey is not mandatory,

we encourage you to complete it, even i you

didnt harvest a turkey. The survey helps the

    Division evaluate population trends, gauge

harvest success and collect other valuable

    inormation.

To stay sae during the turkey hunt, ollow

the recommendations o the National Wild Turkey

    Federation (NWTF):

Select your calling spot in open timber rather

than thick brush; turkeys are hesitant to walk

    into thick brush.

Select a stump, tree trunk or rocktaller and

wider than you areto lean back against

while calling; this will protect your back i

another hunter moves in behind you.

Eliminate the colors white, red, black and blue

rom your hunting outft; these are the colors

    o most gobblers.

Listen or the alarm cries o birds or squirrels;these sounds can alert you when another

hunter begins moving into your area.

When nearby songbirds or your turkey go sud-

denly silent, take a careul look around. Theres

a good chance another hunter is moving in on

    your bird.

Never move, wave or make turkey sounds to

alert another hunter to your location. Remainstill and speak in a loud, clear voice to an-

    nounce your presence.

The NWTF also oers some important frearm

    saety tips:

Always positively identiy your target. In Utah,

    all bearded turkeys are legal.

Make sure you can see the whole bird and have

a clear view beore fring. Never take the saety o until you are ready

    to shoot.

Keep your shot to 40 yards or less.

Aim or the base o the head.

Dont shoot until the turkeys head and neck

    are extended.

Ater fring, put your guns saety on and

approach the downed bird with your frearm

    pointed in a sae direction.

Never run with a loaded frearm.

    For more inormation about hunting

wild turkeys, visit the NWTFs Web site at

    nwtf.org/new_hunting_tactics.html.

    SAFETY TIPS FOR TURKEY HUNTERS

    Use courtesy and common

senseUtah is routinely among the nationsastest-growing states. Youve probably seen

evidence o that growth as you share the out-

doors with amily, riends and ellow Utahns.

When you head into the feld or the 2011

turkey seasonor or any hunting tripthe

Division encourages you to show courtesy and

common sense as you interact with others: Be aware o other hunters and avoid

    interering with their hunts.

Park and operate vehicles in authorized

    areas only.

Dont litter and take a ew minutes to

pick up any trash you see.

    By ollowing these simple guidelines,

hunters will have a better experience in the

feld and reinorce their reputations as respon-

    sible, considerate citizens.

    Bonus pointsUtah Admin. Rule R657-62-8

A turkey bonus point system was started in 2000

to increase your chance o drawing a turkey limited-

    entry permit.

Heres a quick look at how your bonus points

    work in the drawing:

Fity percent o the permits or each limited-

entry hunting unit are reserved or applicants

who have the greatest number o bonus

    points.

You receive a random drawing number or yourcurrent turkey application and a random draw-

ing number or every turkey bonus point you

have. Your lowest random number is then used

in the drawing. (The lower your number, the

better your chance at drawing a permit.)

    How bonus points are earned:

You receive a bonus point each time youre

unsuccessul in the turkey drawing. I you dont plan to hunt a turkey during the

upcoming season, you may apply or a bonus

point only. Simply enter the appropriate hunt

choice code (TKY) on the application and pay

    the $10 application ee.

You may apply or either a turkey permit or a

    bonus point, but not both.

    permitor obtain a remaining limited-entry

permityou lose any bonus points youve accu-

mulated. Youll start earning bonus points again the

    CWMU program works:

Hunt turkeys on private landUtahs Walk-In Access program gives hunters, anglers and trappers unprecedented access to more than

85,000 acres o private property located across much o the state.

Its a program that benefts everyone.

Wildlie enthusiasts can recreate in new

areas, and landowners can earn money

or opening their properties to the public.

Heres a summary o the program:

    The Division pays qualifed land-

owners who open their properties to the public or wildlie-related recreation.

The Division works closely with each landowner to customize a plan and outline the access terms.

The public can then use the areaon oot onlyto hunt, fsh or trap wildlie.

O course, with increased access comes additional responsibility. The success o the program depends on

hunters respecting both the landowners and their properties.

You can show respect by ollowing the rules or each property and by picking up any litter you see, eveni it isnt yours. And remember to thank the landowners, i you happen to see them while hunting.
