Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, Inc.

A Commitment to Journalism, Diversity and the First Amendment

The Diversity Institute was established and funded by the Freedom Forum as a school dedicated to teaching journalism skills and First Amendment values by advancing news media diversity, fairness and excellence. It is a core mission of the Diversity Institute to recruit, train, mentor and retain a diverse workforce in the newsrooms of the United States. Initiatives of the Diversity Institute include:

Al Neuharth Award. The Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media honors lifetime achievement and is presented each fall in partnership with the University of South Dakota. The presentation is held in front of a public audience and also televised live statewide on S. D. Public Broadcasting. Twenty-four individuals have received the Al Neuharth Award since 1989.

Al Neuharth Media Center. The Diversity Institute operates the 55,000-square-foot Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota, which is home to the Diversity Institute’s South Dakota offices and programs, USD’s Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism, all student media on the USD campus and S. D. Public Broadcasting.

American Indian Journalism Institute. The American Indian Journalism Institute, founded in 2001, is an academic and internship program for college students run and underwritten by the Diversity Institute. The Institute provides financial assistance and an opportunity for American Indian students to learn about journalism and consider it as a career.

Chips Quinn Scholars. The Chips Quinn Scholars Program for Diversity in Journalism offers students hands-on training and mentoring by news veterans. More than 1,200 men and women have been named Chips Quinn Scholars since 1991 and have worked as paid interns in newsrooms around the country. The Chips Quinn program is the largest and most enduring diversity initiative of the Freedom Forum.

Crazy Horse Journalism Workshop. Native American high school students planning to attend college and curious about media careers learn firsthand about higher education opportunities and journalism during a week-long workshop held every April at Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota’s Black Hills. Journalists and educators from around the country volunteer to teach a condensed college-level course about the journalism fundamentals. The conference was created by South Dakota Newspaper Association in 2000 and is funded primarily by the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute.

Multimedia Scholars. The Multimedia Scholars program, run in partnership with Schurz Communications, provides financial assistance, a free two-week college course in new-media journalism and places successful graduates in eight-week paid multimedia internships at newspapers owned by Schurz Communications.

New-media training. Several times a year, the Diversity Institute offers an intense five-day boot camp for journalism professionals and educators who want to develop their skills in multimedia and multiplatform journalism. The curriculum is updated each time to incorporate the latest technology and trends in digital media and news gathering, including audio, video and mobile.
