After a disappointing finish to the 2010 campaign saw theSaint Joseph’s field hockey team miss the Atlantic 10Championship for the first time in a decade, the Hawks returnto the pitch in 2011 with a renewed focus and two primarygoals: steady improvement and a return to the postseason.

“Right now, I think the goal is to start bonding on the fieldas a team,” said head coach Michelle Finegan, back for her15th season on the Hawk sideline. “We want to continue toimprove and be better than we were the day before.

“The Atlantic 10 will be competitive, as always,” she con-tinued. “We want to get back into the mix and compete andmake it back into the tournament. It’s a tough road to hoe,but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

This year that postseason goal carries a little moremotiva-tion as Saint Joseph’s will host the Atlantic 10 Field HockeyChampionship for the first time since 2007, when SJUreached the championship game on Finnesey Field. TheHawks will look to play for the conference title this season ontheir brand new home turf on the Maguire Campus, expect-ed to be finished early in the season.

After playing the past three seasons at Drexel University, the squad, specifically its five seniors, are eager to take thefield along City Avenue.

“I know the seniors are absolutely looking forward to hav-ing the opportunity to play on their home field,” Finegan said,“and the whole team is eager to play on our home turf.Training, planning, having more time to devote to skills…it’ssomething that will benefit our team a great deal. It’s very

exciting for our pro-gram.”Helping Finegan

guide the Hawks intotheir new digs is a trioof talented new assis-tant coaches. FormerUniversity of Louisvillestandout JessicaJavelet and seasonedcollegiate and clubprogram coach DallasAlexander have joinedthe staff this season, ashas U.S. National Teammember ShannonTaylor. The group hasmeshed well togetherin the preseason, andthe depth and diversityof their experience willprovide a young Hawksquad with steadyguidance and leader-ship.“As you’re working

with a coaching staff, everyone has their

strengths and weak-nesses, and withmore coaches, youdefinitely havemore strengths,”Finegan explained.“We now havethree coaches withNational Teamexperience, whileDallas is a strongmotivator andexcels in team-building and leader-ship. It’s been ahuge spark to theteam.”

Also providingleadership for theCrimson and Graywill be five seniorswho will be expect-ed to make an impactboth on the field andoff. Forwards Ellen Rowe and Therese Doyle will be theoffensive catalysts at the top of the formation while TheresaTesta will be counted on to hold things down in the midfieldand Rachel Walsh will man the backline. In the cage, goal-keeper Liz Messaros will serve as SJU’s last line of defense.

“I think we’re going to lean on [the seniors] a lot,” Finegansaid. “They’re all strong leaders, and having them connectwith the younger players and help them integrate into theteam culture and adjust to the changes between high schooland college will be helpful.”

The Hawks should feature a good bit of pace on the front-line as Rowe and Doyle lead the charge. Rowe has tallied 13goals in her career, including a nine-goal explosion as a soph-omore, and will use her speed to her advantage once againthis season.

“Ellen is going to be difficult to stop,” Finegan said. “Herspeed is tremendous, and she has skill as well, and thatmakes her hard to mark.”

Doyle had a career-high four goals and nine points in herbreakout junior campaign and will look to improve on thosenumbers as a senior.

Joining the senior duo will be junior forwards MeghanGithens and Ashlee Willis, while junior midfielder JordanCotter will likely contribute up top as well.

Newcomers Nicole Gerdes and Jordan Martin have alsoimpressed during camp and will be counted on to pitch inright from the get-go. Adding talented depth to the front linewill be freshmen Brittany Meyer and Moira Penza.

“I think we have a group of offensive players that cancause havoc for the opposition,” commented Finegan.

Testa returns for her final season in Crimson and Gray asthe anchor of the midfield. Coming off a career-best eight

Ellen Rowe has scored 13 goals inher Hawk career and will use herspeed to lead the SJU attack.

Rachel Walsh has been rock-solid inthe backfield for the past three sea-sons and will be counted on onceagain to anchor the Hawk defense.

points last year, she will combine withDoyle to provide a steady hand in tran-sition for a young Hawk squad.

“Theresa Testa is definitely a leaderin the midfield, and Therese Doyleplays some midfield, and we have jun-iors Abby Hoover and Leigh Deiningermoving up there as well, so we have asolid returning core,” the head coachexplained.

Hoover enjoyed an outstandingsophomore campaign in 2010, startingall 19 games in the backfield leadingthe team with 10 defensive saves.Deininger cracked the starting lineupeight times as a freshman in 2009 andhas played in 32 games in her career.

Newcomers Lauren Brands, GinaBrown, and Megan DeMarco will pro-vide depth for both the midfield andforward lines as all three seek to earnplaying time in their debut seasons onHawk Hill.

A three-year starter on the defensiveline, Walsh returns for her senior seasonas a co-captain (along with Rowe) and, alongside fellow sen-ior Messaros, will hold down the fort at the back end for SaintJoseph’s.

“Rachel will lead the defense,” Finegan shared. “She’ll beback there with Liz in the cage and they will provide leader-

ship for our youngerdefenders.”

Sophomore ShannonMcNeill slides back fromthemidfield to compete fortime as a back this season, while redshirt freshmanSara Kolobielski and truefreshmenCorieMcLaughlinand Katie Walsh are in themix aswell.

Adding depth to thedefensive corpswill be jun-ior Kortney Smith andfreshman JessicaRutkowski. Redshirt fresh-man goalkeeper KateMitchell will also con-tribute, seeing playing timein the cage in her first sea-son of competition.

The Hawks will play achallenging early seasonslate that aims to pre-pare them well forAtlantic 10 conference

play. SJU starts off with local rival andperennially-ranked Drexel before taking onFairfield, Ohio, and Towson. In addition toannual contests with Penn, Lehigh, andDelaware, SJU will host California for thefirst regular season meeting between thesquads; last season, the Hawks traveled tothe Golden State for a preseason scrim-mage against the Bears.

“They’re usually a top team,” Finegansaid of Cal. “We also have three gamesagainst teams from the Colonial AthleticAssociation, which is a good conference. We have a pretty solid non-conferenceschedule, but it will prepare us well forthe A-10.”

Road trips to Siena and Georgetown anda home contest with Villanova round outthe non-conference slate.

In league play, the Hawks will hostarchrival Temple, Richmond, and SaintLouis, while traveling to defending champi-on Massachusetts, crosstown rival La Salle, and Lock Haven.

The 2011 Atlantic 10 Field HockeyChampionship at Ryan Field will be played on November 4and 5.Ultimately, Saint Joseph’s hopes to be there on the field,

competing for the league title. If the Hawks can lift the 2011Atlantic 10 Championship trophy, they certainly won’t havefar to go to put it in the Hagan Arena trophy case.

After three years off campus, it’ll be just a quick walkacross the street.

Theresa Testa posted career-bestsin goals and points last season andwill once again be called on to holddown the fort in the midfield.

Liz Messaros will be the last line of defense in the Hawkcage. She has seen time in nine contests andmade 26 savesover the past two seasons.

Therese Doyle leads all return-ing players in 2010 scoring, notching four goals and ninepoints last season.

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the SaintJoseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk pro-gram to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most success-ful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons withdouble-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history.

A two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Finegan has notched more wins thanany coach in program history. Taken alone, either of her two stints at SaintJoseph’s would put her atop the all-time list; combined, Finegan has won nearlythree times as many games as her nearest competitor. She led the Hawks to theAtlantic 10 Tournament in the first seven seasons after her return, includingappearances in the championship game in 2006 and 2007. She earned the 100thwin of her career in a 3-2 win over La Salle on October 19, 2003; exactly four yearslater, a 6-0 victory over West Chester marked her 100th win on Hawk Hill.

Finegan returned to Hawk Hill after spending seven seasons as the head coachat Lehigh University. She previously guided the SJU program for six years, earningboth conference and regional Coach of the Year honors after leading the Hawks toboth the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles in 1995.

One of the most respected names in the game, Finegan built the SJU programinto one of the Mid-Atlantic's best during her first stint as head coach. After spend-ing her first three years retooling the team, the Hawks went 37-22-2 over her finalthree seasons. She capped her run at SJUin 1995 by leading the program to the bestseason in its history. That year, the Hawkswon both the Atlantic 10 regular seasonand tournament titles on their way to aschool-record 16 wins and a #17 nationalranking in the final poll. It was the naturalculmination of Finegan’s rebuilding effortsas the Hawks had qualified for the A-10Tournament in three of her final four sea-sons before she took over the head coach-ing position at Lehigh.

An excellent player at both the colle-giate and national levels, Finegan was astandout defensive player at the University

After spending three-plus seasonsplaying home games off-campus, theHawks will return to City Avenue in 2011when they open up the brand new EllenRyan Field on the Maguire Campus.

She served as SJU’s firstwomen’s basketball coach and alsocoached the women’s tennis team for atime. Her vision and dedication are thefoundation upon which Ryan Field, andthe women’s athletics program at SaintJoseph’s, are built.

“When you think of women’s athlet-ics at SJU, the first name you think of is,and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Directorof Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope thatby putting her name on this field, theUniversity can honor her contributionsnow and forever.”

Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008through 2010 seasons playing predomi-nantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJUamassed a 12-12 “home” record at thefacility during that stretch.

One of the most famous mascots in col-lege sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk hasbeen flapping its wings for 55 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its goldenanniversary in 2005-06, is best known forstaying in constant motion by flapping itswings throughout every basketball gameand representing the Saint Joseph's motto,"The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams havebeen recognized with the nickname“Hawks” since 1929. At that time, theschool’s yearbook editor initiated a con-test among the student body for a sym-bol. More than 100 submissions werenarrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over“Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The namewas appropriate because it typified “thefighting spirit of our crimson and gray ath-letes and it is suggestive of the aerialattack which has made our football teamfamous.” Football, ironically, was discon-tinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numer-ous accolades in its over 50-year history. Ithas been selected as the nation’s top mas-cot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated,Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook, ESPNCollegeBasketballmagazine and was nominated for theMascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

TIn 2010, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program pro-duced its first-ever Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year insenior forward Nicole McCreight. A First Team All-Conference selection, McCreight kept the Hawks in the huntall season, but unfortunately, the Crimson and Gray fell justshort of a berth in the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championshipfor the first time since 2000.

The Hawks had a tough early schedule, suffering defeatsto a pair of nationally-ranked teams in two of their first threegames. In between losses to #3 Virginia and #11 Drexel, SJUused a seven-goal outburst to take down Bucknell, 7-3.McCreight tied a school record with four goals in the game;she is the third Hawk to achieve that feat, and the first sinceKatelyn O’Brien in 2004.

SJU won its second game of the year in another show ofoffensive fireworks as the Hawks defeated Lehigh, 6-4.Senior Hannah Rogers posted her first career multi-goalgame, scoring the first and last goals as the Hawks emergedwith the win on the road.

After starting conference play with a hard-fought 1-0defeat at Temple, SJU ripped off three straight Atlantic 10victories as McCreight caught fire down the stretch. SaintJoseph’s took down local rivals West Chester (3-1) and LaSalle (3-2) and, after an overtime non-conference defeat atPenn, blasted A-10 foe Saint Louis, 5-2. Unfortunately forthe Hawks, a loss at Massachusetts was followed by a heart-breaking overtime defeat to Lock Haven in their final homegame. Richmond then won a do-or-die season finale to keepthe Hawks out of the conference tournament.

McCreight capped her banner year with the league’sOffensive Player of the Year award and First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Scoring in each of Saint Joseph’s finalseven games, she also earned Second Team All-Region acco-lades as well. McCreight was also honored on September 21with the league’s Player of the Week award after pouring infour goals and two assists in a three-game stretch.

Senior goalkeeper Kelly Swanick finished the seasonamong the national leaders with 178 saves, good for thefourth-highest single-season total in SJU history. Her 336career stops put her sixth on the all-time list.

Rogers and senior forward Jen Wrublesky were namedto the Atlantic 10 All-Academic squad after the season aswell. Rogers was second on the team with 16 points, andher eight assists were tied for third in the league, whileWrublesky finished her Hawk Hill career with 22 goals and 55career points. The pair, along with five teammates, alsoearned NFHCA National Academic Squad honors.

Senior Caitlyn Crane finished the season with nineassists, good for a first-place tie at the top of the leagueleaderboard. Senior Casey Fry posted career highs in goals(four), assists (two), and points (10) as well, while Crane andclassmate Katie Maguire tallied their first career goals.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of whatis now the Atlantic 10 Conference wasconceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliationhas grown into a 14-university, 21-sportleague that is universally hailed as oneof the best conferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is adirect result of the ideals and commit-ments of the member institutions ofthe Atlantic 10 - the University ofDayton, Duquesne University, FordhamUniversity, The George WashingtonUniversity, La Salle University,University of Massachusetts, Universityof North Carolina at Charlotte,University of Rhode Island, Universityof Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University,Saint Louis University, TempleUniversity, and Xavier University.

The 14 member institutions of theA-10 are united and strengthened bytheir diversity. Each is extraordinary inits educational mission, whether of aCatholic faith, a private university or aland grant institution. The varied pur-suits of each member prove that thereare many threads that weave the fabricfor a great conference.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunctionwith Atlantic 10 CommissionerBernadette V. McGlade, have made astrong commitment to making the aca-demic and athletics equation a success-ful one. Over the years, the leaguemembership has strived to better rec-ognize the academic accomplishmentsof its student-athletes. TheCommissioner'sHonor Roll, which cites every Atlantic10 student-athlete with a 3.5 gradepoint average or better, recognized1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009while 1,181 were named to the Spring2010 Honor Roll.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sportsand honors one student-athlete persport as the A-10 Student-Athlete ofthe Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10provides four postgraduate scholarshipgrants to qualified student-athletes. In2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletesearned Academic All-Conferencerecognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruthand Charlotte’s Adam Gross along withLauren Olson and Whitney Roth ofSaint Louis received postgraduatescholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841Division I sports teams being honoredwith public recognition awards fortheir latest multi-year AcademicProgress Rate scores. This representsan increase of nine A-10 teams fromlast season and 25 two years ago. All 14

A-10 institutions had at least one pro-gram recognized, while twelve schoolshad multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored bythe conference were represented byat least one A-10 program. Among the31 Division I conferences, only theAtlantic 10, the Ivy Group and thePatriot League had each of its memberinstitutions receive public recognitionawards for one or more programs.

Among the 21 sports sponsored bythe conference, women's tennis had aleague-high six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction inboth men’s and women’s outdoortrack & field and men’s indoor track &field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in confer-ence-sponsored sports, followed bySaint Joseph’s and Xavier with sevenapiece.

The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65teams with a perfect graduation rateaccording to the NCAA GraduationSuccess Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institu-tions enjoy average graduation rates of90 percent or higher in league-spon-sored sports, led by Dayton's averagegraduation rate of 97.38 percent. TheFlyers are followed by GeorgeWashington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), LaSalle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). TheA-10 features eight women's tennisand women's soccer programs thatenjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf andtennis have a 100 percent graduationrate.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with atotal population of nearly 74 millionpeople within its geographic footprintof eight states and the District ofColumbia, will crown champions in 21sports this season: baseball, men's andwomen's basketball, men's andwomen's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men'sand women's indoor and outdoor track& field, women's rowing, men's andwomen's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's swimming & diving, men'sand women's tennis, and women's vol-leyball.

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbre-viation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts.

The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as havemost campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clari-fy this policy both internally and externally.

According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among thenation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAADivision I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher edu-cation and other public constituencies.

Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g.,“SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St.Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”).
