Dear friends and supporters of Girl Scouting:
In 1912 there was no path to leadership for women. Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low believed that girls should receive the same opportunities as boys to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually, -- and she and those who would follow in her footsteps have worked hard to ensure that what she started would grow in the years ahead.
Low began a tradition that would eventually be replicated in millions of communities around the world – the Girl Scout troops. While troops remain the most recognized way a girl may participate in Girl Scouting, our council is now offering additional Pathways for girls to get involved, such as: Events, Series, Camp, and Travel.
Today, Girl Scouts is the nation’s premier leadership development organization for girls. We work on a broader scale and our girls navigate a more complex world than ever before, but some things remain the same. Each Girl Scout continues to benefit from connecting with her peers in an environment where she can build the confidence and skills she needs to become a leader.
In southeast Louisiana, we strive to also offer programs that encourage healthy living along girls; increase girls’ involvement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and increase their financial literacy. Our Girl Bulllying seminar in June is just one example of how we prepare our adult volunteers in dealing with critical issues affecting girls today, giving them the tools needed to help girls succeed and flourish.
It is the dedication of these committed adult volunteers and community supporters that never ceases to inspire and encourage us to provide the best leadership experience possible. Please know how much we appreciate your time, energy, and financial support as we enter the second century of Girl Scouting.

Over 17,000 girls and 7,200 adults in southeast Louisiana were active Girl Scouts, committed to living the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
About 9,140 individuals utilized the council’s three camp properties and one in-town cabin for troop and service unit camping, and council-wide events. In December, Camp Whispering Pines was the site of filming TNT’s drama pilot, Scent of the Missing, to air in 2012.
Girl Scout First LEGO League robotics teams from New Orleans and Baton Rouge competed in the state competition, after qualifying regionally. Members of the Society of Women Engineers volunteered their time with both teams.
714 girls enjoyed summer resident camp programs at Camp Marydale, Camp Whispering Pines, and Camp Covington.
Over 500 Girl Scouts attended eight summer day or twilight camps located across southeast Louisiana, which were directed solely by volunteers.
About 7,200 individuals participated in council-sponsored programs including a NASA program where girls built and launched their own rockets, built lunar rovers, and designed their own mission patch. This program was part of the

council’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiative.
Over 125 Girl Scout volunteers, parents, teachers, and other professionals participated in the council’s Girl Bullying – Awareness to Action seminar in New Orleans. Funded in part by the Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund, the seminar brought in experts on relational aggression (female bullying) and cyber bullying to raise awareness and provide steps to prevent and stop bullying from occurring in the troop, school, and community.
Approximately 1,400 girls became Girl Scouts through innovative outreach programs held in housing developments and schools in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Adult learning sessions increased with the addition of online courses, face to face sessions, and leisure learning weekends held at camp.
During the Girl Scout Cookie program, Girl Scouts learned first-hand the ins and outs of business basics while exploring entrepreneurship and accessing new technology tools, like a Cookie locator mobile phone app and email marketing. Girls sold over 1,100,000 boxes of cookies, and 186 girls were inducted into the Cookie Hall of Fame for selling 500 boxes of cookies or more.
A community service component was added to the council’s Fall Product Sale of nuts, candy, and magazines for military troops overseas to receive honey roasted nuts.
The council began celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting with an event at Cajun Country Corn Maze whose maze was designed to look like the Girl Scout 100th Anniversary logo. At this event, Girl Scouts donated over 1,200 pounds of food to the Baton Rouge Food Bank for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul who provides meals for the homeless or needy.
Ten Girl Scout Seniors/Ambassadors were honored for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award in 2010-11 at a pinning ceremony and reception at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge. In 2011, 22 Girl Scout Cadettes also earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, and 179 Girl Scout Juniors earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award.
