GEOGRAPHYCOUNTRY KEY NOTES

Germany is a country in Cen-tral Europe, stretching from the Alps, across the North European Plain to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Ger-many has the second largest population in Europe (after the European part of Russia) and is seventh largest in area. The territory of Germany co-vers 357,021 km2 (137,847 sq mi), consisting of 349,223 km2 (134,836 sq mi) of land and 7,798 km2 (3,011 sq mi) of wa-ter. Elevation ranges from the mountains of the Alps (highest point: the Zugspitze at 2,962 metres (9,718 ft) in the south to the shores of the North Sea (Nordsee) in the northwest and the Baltic Sea (Ostsee) in the northeast. Between lie the forested uplands of central Germany and the low-lying lands of northern Germany (lowest point: Neuendorf-Sachsenbande at 3.54 metres (11.6 ft) below sea level), tra-versed by some of Europe’s major rivers such as the Rhine, Danube and Elbe. Because of its central location, Germany shares borders with nine Eu-ropean countries, second only to Russia: Denmark in the

CIRCUIT INFO

Car and bike races have been held on closed public roads in the area around the town of Chemnitz, Germany since the 1920s and were still taking pla-ce until as recently as 1990. It was decided, however, that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new cir-cuit was built five miles west of Chemnitz in 1996. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport sa-fety station, Sachsenring first

hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have ta-ken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001. Numerous tight cor-ners make it one of the slower tracks on the calendar but there is never any shortage of close racing action.

Germany has a social market economy with a highly qua-lified labour force, a large ca-pital stock, a low level of cor-ruption, and a high level of innovation. It has the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth largest by nominal GDP in the world, and the fifth largest by PPP in 2009. The service sector contribu-tes approximately 71% of the total GDP, industry 28%, and agriculture 0.9%. The average national unemployment rate in 2010 was about 7.5%. Germany is a founding mem-ber of the EU, the G8 and the G20, and was the world’s largest exporter from 2003 to

2008. In 2009 it remains the second largest exporter and third largest importer of goods. Most of the country’s exports are in engineering, especially machinery, automobiles, che-mical goods and metals. Ger-many is a leading producer of wind turbines and solar-power technology. Major annual in-ternational trade fairs and con-gresses are held in Hanover, Frankfurt, and Berlin.Germany is an advocate of clo-ser European economic and political integration. crashes. Both accidents have been heavy as I was lapping at over 200km/h but I have only suffered a small abrasion in the right arm. I love this track but I am starting to hate that turn (11) because I crashed many times there in the past. Anyway in the afternoon we could con-tinue with our planning but I had some little issues about the front feeling and the rear edge grip. It’s important to improve the turning of the bike following the twisty natu-re of this track and this is our main target for tomorrow”.

Sachsenring, 15 July: The Ger-man Grand Prix at the Sachsen-ring this week end marks the halfway point in the 18-round MotoGP World Cham-pionship and premier class ri-ders joined the 3.671km track for a first “animated” day of practices which saw several ri-ders crashing in free practice 1.

LCR Honda MotoGP racer Toni Elias won last year’s race at the Sachsenring but this morning only completed a to-tal of seven laps after crashing twice, first in turn 11 and then in turn 1. Luckily the Spaniard escaped unhurt to line up in the afternoon practices proceeding his work to fine tune his RCV at the twisty German surface.

GRAND PRIX DAYSRACE

Sachsenring, 17 July: after yesterdays positive qualifying session, the LCR Honda Mo-toGP racer Toni Elias star-ted from the 14th spot on the grid for the 30-lap race at the German circuit but the Spa-niard was hoping for a diffe-rent result aboard his RCV.

The reigning Moto2 World Champion worked on get-ting more feeling and easier handling from the front end of his RCV at the twisty race track but after another good start Elias had to face his usual problems with the rear managing to finish the race in 16th position. Now LCR Team will move straight to Laguna Seca circuit for the USA GP on the 24th of July.

Elias: “Yesterday we thought we made a good step forward and I was hoping for a better result. But at the beginning of the race with the full load of fuel when the bike was heavier I have struggled very much to control it. Suddenly our usual problems came back again and I have started to lose the front in the braking and no confidence in the rear. I managed to cross the line in 16th position but obviously I am very frustrated. By the way I do not want to lose my motivation and my con-centration and we’ll see what is going to happen in Laguna”.
