2011 POST PROGRAM REPORT

Although the US-Japan Summer Cultural Experience 2011 has come to an end, I know that the friendships

and achievements that have formed will long surpass the two week duration of the program. Visions of the

excited yet quiet students checking in on the first day, and the cameras, hugs,

laughter and tears of the last are prominent in my mind. After much preparation

for my second year as Program Director, I now can reflect on what will remain as

one of the most fulfilling and influential experiences of my career as an educator.

I feel that every part of the program plays an essential role in reaching our goals

for the students. Through structured events like the English and Japanese

language classes, elective classes, Mamma Mia Broadway play, or udon noodle-making, the students were

able to acquire bilingual and bicultural skills and experiences. However, it became

clear that the students’ interactions during a game of their choice, throughout

their meals, or during free dorm time were just as important to their success in

gaining all that this unique program has to offer.

I was most proud of the students on Family Day, when they were able to screen

their group’s video productions for each other, as well as for their families and

friends. Laughter and smiles filled the room as we were all able to see the media

production skills they acquired and the creativity and teamwork that went into

each group’s interpretation their visited New York City borough or theme. Their

hard work brainstorming, shooting footage in New York City, and editing paid off

immensely, as I know they will never forget the pride they felt when seeing

their finished products.

Although I had been anticipating the program’s start for a long time, I could

not have imagined the strength of the bonds that would form between the

staff and students of Japan and the United States or the depth of what

would be experienced and learned. For that, I have mostly the positive

outlooks and enthusiasm of such a great group of students, interns, and staff to thank.

まずは、学院を信じお子様を 2 週間お預けいただいた保護者の皆様に感謝申し上げます。どこまで皆様

のご期待に添えたか、後日アンケートをとらせていただきたく思いますが、このプログラムの運営に携

わった全教職員、インターン、DCTV のスタッフ、その他関連業者一同この 2 週間ベストを尽くした事

は、皆様に自信を持ってご報告させていただきたく思います。今年も65名の参加者を迎え7月24日(日)

より 2 週間慶應義塾ニューヨーク学院サマープログラムを開催いたしま

した。参加後まで気付かなかった生徒もいたようですが今年のこのプロ

グラムのタイトルには“夏期講習”と記されています。プログラム開始

後「遊んでばかりいられるプログラムだと思ってきたのに～。」との様な

コメントを複数の参加者から聞きました。それでも選択科目の授業を 7

科目から選べるため、参加者皆さん自分の興味のある科目を選べたよう

で学びつつも結果的に大変楽しめたようです。“お遊び“では今年新しく

カラオケ大会とダンスパーティーを開催しました。カラオケ大会では、アメリカ人の女子参加者が、オ

リジナルの振り付けで日本語でポップミュージックを元気よく歌ってみせて

くれました。2 イベントとも大変盛り上がりでしたので来年も引き続き開催し

たいと思います。

First of all we would like to thank all the parents and guardians of the

participants for trusting us with your children for the two weeks. We would like to

conduct a survey soon after the program to assess your satisfaction level with our

program. However, at this time I can honestly say that all those who were involved

in the operation of this program, including all the faculty and staff, interns, DCTV crew and outside

contractors had done their best to provide quality you rightfully expect from us. On Sunday July 24th we

welcomed 65 students for the 4th annual Keio Academy o New York’s US-JAPAN Summer Cultural

Experience. I guess some of the participants did not read our fine print . This year we have added more

academic programs. We heard comment from some that they were not expecting any studies during the

program. But since the participants had 7 electives to choose from they all got to select subjects they are

interested in. For “FUN” activities we tried two new activities “Karaoke” and “Dance Party.” Students had so

much fun singing and dancing. I think these activities are “MUST DO” activities for the next year.

あっという間に、２週間のキャンプが終わりました。はじめの数日

間は、緊張した面持ちで過ごしていた子供達も、３日もすると、元

気に友達とはしゃいでいました。寮の生活では、オープンジム,フレ

ンズロタンダの活動を通し、生徒の交流がさらに深まり、子供達は、

一瞬でも楽しいひと時を逃したくない一心で夢中になって過ごし

ていました。このキャンプを通し、世界中から来ている子供達が触

れ合い、世界に羽ばたく準備を蓄えてくれていたように思います。

ここでの貴重な経験と思い出を大切にしてもらいたいと思います

“All the participants have been wonderful, having fun and being personable to participants and staff alike.

They're enthusiastic about their video projects and their electives. A few students even asked for

homework for my elective classes. In the dorms, they've been great members of the community. I'm

continually impressed at how well behaved the students are. Just a great group of kids! The biggest

challenge has been creating activities in the evening that are

equally appealing for American and Japanese youth. I think our

games, which have included cards and even capture the flag,

have accomplished this, though.”

“参加者達皆、異なる環境から集まりましたが、自然とお部屋の整

理整頓をしたり、ルームメイトに気を使ったりと上手な暮らしを

しているように見受けられました。初日から皆、スケジュールに

沿って”頑張って”起きていたことです。参加者達のスケジュールが忙しくなり、毎日忙しいにもかかわらず、

きちんとスケジュールを確認したり、朝も頑張って起床するなど、自律心の高さは素晴らしいと思います！

また、ルームメイト同士協力し合って起こしあうなど、コミュニケーションの大切さを学べてよかったので

はないでしょうか？参加者達がキャンプの環境に慣れるまで大変そうな姿を見たことはこちらも心が痛みま

した。もちろん一過性に過ぎないものの、参加者達が心地よさを見つけるまでのプロセスなので、見守って

いるスタッフとしては頑張ってほしいという願いでした。その後、みんなが自分達の居場所を作り出し、楽

“I have been enjoying teaching! The students have been quite productive! They are hard working, kind and

have a great sense of humor, which makes the classroom environment perfect for art making. I realized in

the first class that some of them didn't understand what I was saying in class BUT many of the students have

become a great help by translating instructions into Japanese

for me AND they can usually pick up what were doing through

visual cues. I am extremely impressed with their level of

artistic/motor skill for their age and their motivation to try.”

“日本語の中級クラスは種々多様な生徒が在籍していた（平仮

名のみ分かるレベルから漢字・文法も習ったことがあるレベ

ルまで）ので、それぞれが持つ知識を整理しながら新しい情

報を足していく、という方法で授業を進めることになった。ただ、驚くことには、彼らの「日本語について

知りたい」という熱意により、話題が「日本語の歴史を知る」にまで発展したこともあったということだ。

このセッションは終わるが、彼らの今後が楽しみで心躍る”。

“I participated in this program again for the third time because I know this summer program is wonderful

and rewarding. Every year I have met many great kids and staff members, so I was sure that I would get to

know more of the awesome members through the internship this year, too. I was right about that since I had

a fun time making a film with kids, eating lunch with them, and

cooperating with other interns. I wish I could work as an intern next

year as well. I will never forget what I have experienced at Keio NY

campus every summer. Thank you so much.”

サマープログラムは本当に充実していて、やりがいがあるので、今年で 3 年

目になりますが参加させていただきました。毎年素敵な生徒とスタッフの

方々と出会えるので、今年もまた新しい出会いを楽しみにしていました。そ

して、やはり今回も素晴らしいメンバーばかりで、子供と映像を作ったりお

昼ご飯を一緒に食べたり、他のインターンと力を合わせたりしたことは楽しい思い出でしかありません。来年も参加した

い気持ちでいっぱいです。毎年 3 年間慶忚 NY 参加者スで過ごしたことは、一生忘れません。ありがとうございました。

“I chose to participate in this program because I wanted to interact with and teach both American and Japanese students

at the same time. While there were certainly challenging moments, I found them nothing less than rewarding in the end

and I am very impressed by my students, fellow interns and the Keio staff in their ability to build a truly bi-cultural

environment. Not only will I leave here with memories of late-night card games, inside jokes born from broken

translations and the daily sound of 65 kids in their morning rush to get to

language class, but I will go home with a profound sense of the beauty of

cross-cultural contact and the comfort that I have made life-long friends with

whom I spent two unforgettable summer weeks this year.”

私がこのプログラムに入った理由はアメリカ人と日本人を同時に教えたり、

みんなと一緒にすごしたりすることができるからです。確かに大変なことも

ありましたが、それらも良い経験になりました。周りの生徒や、インターン、

スタッフの皆さんと一緒に笑ったり、寝たり、一所懸命頑張ったりしていま

したので、一生忘れられない思い出を一緒にたくさん作ることが出来て、本

当にすばらしかったと思います。この二週間の間、生徒たちは文化的な違いに触れ合ってきたことと思います。そんな中

でたとえ言語が違い、相手の言う一言一言の意味が理解できずとも、お互いの考えや気持ちが通じ合うということが自分

を含め、みんなが分かっただろうと思います。このような経験をさせて頂き、本当にありがたく思っています。

“I chose to participate as an intern at this year’s summer program because I wanted to be in touch with

Japanese and English as much as possible. The way to get good at languages is to use the language, so by

interacting with the students I learn the language. I also joined to teach American culture to the first timers

from Japan. From my experience going abroad is a whole different world. I wanted to show the students to

be open minded about the world.”

慶應ニューヨーク学院のサマープログラムに参加した理由としては常に英

語と日本語が話せる環境にいたいからです。言語を忘れずに学ぶためには

その言語を話し続けることが大切だと思います。私の場合、生徒と両方英

語と日本語で通じ合い言語を学びたいと思っています。さらに、日本から

アメリカに初めてきた生徒たちにアメリカの文化を教えたいからです。私

の経験から言うと海外に行くということは別世界に行くことと同じです。

参加した生徒たちも初日や初めの数日はこのようだったと思います。アメ

リカに２週間いることによってアメリカの文化を知ったと思います。このプログラムを通して生徒たちがアメリカの文化

と接し、海外に対して広い視野を持っていただけたと確信してます。

“I decided to intern at the KEIO Summer Program because I wanted the opportunity to work with young

people learning Japanese and English. I think it is essential that young people throughout the world learn

other languages and cultures. During the Summer Program I have seen many students reach out to others

from different backgrounds, which gives me hope for the future. I have really enjoyed watching the

students work on their films. Not only are they are becoming familiar

with technology, but they are also learning another way to look at the

world. I have also learned a lot and I think we are all very lucky to

have been able to come.”

日本語と英語を勉強している学生と関わる仕事をしたいと思っていますので、

サマープログラムでインターンシップをやることにしました。全世界の若者

が他の文化と言語を学ぶことがとても大切だと思います。サマープログラム

で多くの生徒が異文化を持っている人と話したり、遊んだりするのを見ると、

希望が持てます。映画作りに励んでいる生徒を見るのもとても楽しいです。

テクノロジーに慣れるだけではなく、違う観点から世界を見つめるチャンスにもなっているので、素晴らしい経験だと思

います。私も生徒と同様、サマープログラムを通してたくさん学んでいます。来れてよかったと思います。

“Keio Summer Program is a great way to experience the bilingual and bicultural environment Keio

University has created in NY. I have attended this summer program for the 2 years (2010 and 2011), and

have enjoyed my time here. The language classes helped

me learn very much about Japanese writing. Keio Summer

Program has taught me many things, but one of the most

important things learned is Japanese writing in JSL3. Also,

the cultural exchange occurring in this program is

absolutely amazing. I feel and observe that both English

speakers and Japanese speakers positively changed their

feelings towards other cultures and learned many things

about each other. The experience of the many recreational activities and such also impressed me in this

program. It is great being at this program and I feel honored to take part in the Keio Summer Program”

験できないような内容で、毎日が新しい世界への一歩になったようです。そし

て何よりも得がたい経験だと感じたのは、母国語が異なり、育った国も習慣も

異なるお友達やインターンの方々とのビデオ作製を通じて、言葉や習慣の違い

を理解し、一つの目標を達成できたことではないでしょうか。これだけバック

グラウンドが異なる人達が、慶應サマープログラムという一つの家族としてま
