  • HEAD COACH ROBBIE WINE

In just six years at the helm of the Penn State baseball program, headcoach Robbie Wine has anchored the Nittany Lions into one of the mostconsistent teams in the Big Ten. Wine, the school's 13th coach of all-time,has turned the school's Yrst intercollegiate athletic squad into one that con-tinues to reach new heights. e Lions have been deemed as one of the mostprogressive teams in the nation by various college baseball media.

In 2008, Wine became the Yrst coach in school history to produce back-to-back top three Ynishes in the Big Ten. After a slow start to the season, thesquad staged a dramatic rally to shut out Indiana and Iowa en route to 17conference wins and the third seed in the proceeding tournament. From2007-08, the Nittany Lions maintained a .600 winning percentage againstBig Ten opposition.

Penn State followed those eorts with 25 more wins in 2009. It was thethird straight season of at least 25 victories, one of only four Big Ten squadsto do so. After a hot start, the Nittany Lions struggled down the stretch, but a number of bright spots included a win against 21st-ranked Minnesotain the season-Ynale which prevented the Golden Gophers from winning theBig Ten Regular Season Championship. Penn State also defeated eventualNCAA Tournament participants Indiana and Ohio State and took two-of-three from perennial power Michigan.

Wine has helped make Medlar Field at Lubrano Park one of the bestatmospheres in college baseball. e squad drew over 1,000 fans for almosthalf of its games (10) while drawing over 2,000 two times and 3,000 onone occasion. e Lions have impressed on the Yeld as well, highlighted bya 15-9 home mark in 2008. e Nittany Lions drew four crowds of over2,000 that year to place 42nd nationally (for the second straight season) inaverage attendance, beating the ranks of some of college baseball's top pro-

grams such as Vanderbilt and Arizona. In only three seasons, Penn Statebaseball has made Medlar Field at Lubrano Park "one of college baseball'sbest stadiums."

Known and respected throughout both professional and collegiate base-ball circles, Wine has used his connections to expand Penn State's recruitingreach. Traditionally known as a regional program, Wine has gradually madePenn State baseball into a nationally-known name. Penn State will enter the2011 season with players from 10 dierent states as well as one Canadianprovince. In addition to the 14 Pennsylvania natives, there are 21 student-athletes from across the continent. e roster includes Yve Californians, three Texans, three Massachusetts residents, two New Jersey and Floridanatives, and one player from Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Ohio, and Vir-ginia. Dave Walkling is the lone player born outside of the United States asthe junior right-hander hails from British Columbia.

Not only are some of the best prep and junior college talent signing withPenn State, but they are also performing once here. Two of Wines players(pitcher Scott Kelley and Yrst baseman Cory Wine) were selected in lastJunes Major League Baseball Draft. Penn State has seen nine players selectedfrom 2007-09, third most in the Big Ten in that span. In 2008, pitcherDrew O'Neil was selected in the fourth round by the Chicago White, becoming the highest Penn State draftee since Nate Bump went in the Yrstround in 1998. He also marked just the second Penn Stater to be drafted inthe top 10 rounds in the past 31 years. Before O'Neil's selection, Yve play-ers were selected in the 2007 draft, three coming in the Yrst 14 rounds.

Wine has 26 years of playing and coaching experience at the college andprofessional levels. Prior to his Yrst head coaching position, he was an assis-tant coach in charge of hitting and defense at his alma mater, OklahomaState. During his tenure, the Cowboys won a Big 12 Tournament champi-onship (2004), qualiYed for Yve NCAA Regionals, one Super Regional anda College World Series (1999). He also oversaw talent evaluation, recruit-ing and oce administration. Scott Baker, Josh Fields, Scott Richmond andLuke Scott are among the various Major Leaguers coming from OklahomaState during Wines tenure.

Strong oenses have been known to follow Wine wherever he coaches. Inhis Yrst season as head coach in 2005, the Nittany Lions hit nearly 50 pointshigher (.302 vs. .255) than they had in 2004. Five dierent Penn State play-ers hit over .300 to account for the incredible improvement. e NittanyLions also had 73 more RBI (286-213), 92 more hits (546-454) and 81more runs (318-237).

ey followed the improvement with another strong season in 2006, bat-ting .289 as a team with four dierent players hitting over .300 while Yve

He was theeighth overall selection of the 1983 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, the second-highest pick in Oklahoma State history. Wine worked his wayto the Major League level where he played for the Houston Astros for partsof the 1986 and 1987 seasons. After his playing days, he spent 1991 as a hit-ting, third base and defensive coach for the Miami Miracle of the Single-AFlorida State League. He then worked for the Milwaukee Brewers from1993-96 as part of their big league coaching sta and then as a roving catch-ing instructor.

Wine was a two-time All-American catcher during his playing days atOklahoma State. Playing for the legendary coach Gary Ward, Wine's teamsmade three College World Series appearances, including a second-place Yn-ish in 1981. He was inducted into the Oklahoma State Hall of Fame in1993.

"He's had great relationships with his student-athletes," said FrankAnderson, Wines former boss at Oklahoma State. "It's an outstandingopportunity for both him and the school. It's a positive move for Penn Stateand for Robbie. Not only is he a good coach, but he's a good person and partof a great family."

300 programs that has played in the big leagues.Born July 13, 1962 in Philadelphia, Robbie is the son of former Philadel-

phia Phillies shortstop Bobby Wine, who has spent over 40 years inprofessional baseball and is currently an advanced scout for the AtlantaBraves. Robbie graduated from Methacton High School in Fairview Vil-lage, Pa. and went back to school while coaching at Oklahoma State to earnhis Bachelors Degree in 2002.

Wine resides in Boalsburg with his wife Shealynn and son Cory (23) anddaughter Mackenzie (19). Cory graduated from Penn State last year fol-lowing a stellar four-year baseball career. He was selected by the PhiladelphiaPhillies in the 38th round of last Junes Major League Draft and later playedfor the Gulf Coast League Phillies.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING...e Yrst thing I would say about Robbie is that he grew up in the baseball world. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience. His dad was aplayer and scout for many, many years, so Robbies got a pedigree. Something needs to be said for that type of experience and background, whichhelps out.

Interestingly enough, he was always sort of quiet, always one of the quietest in the room. You would have never known that hisdad was a former player. He was always kind of reserved. He had a lot of respect for the game.

-Phil Garner, 31 years of Major League experience (16 as a player & 15 as a manager), Played and coached with Wine

Robbie Wine comes from a tremendous baseball background Yrst and foremost, following his father who was an outstanding player and baseballmind. He learned at home, then having the opportunity to play at Oklahoma State under Gary Ward only maximized his potential in this game.

Ive witnessed Yrst hand his ability to recruit, develop and compete with student athletes at the highest level through our bedlam series(Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma rivalry). Unfortunately for me, Robbie was standing on the other side of the Yeld; we had tremdnousbattles. I know Penn State will thrive under his leadership.

-Sunny Golloway, Oklahoma Head Baseball Coach, Played and Coached Against Wine

I have no problem saying that Coach Wine is the best baseball coach that I had during my playing career. Wino has a unique abilitythat enables him to relate extremely well with players of all dierent personalities. Simply put, hes a players coach. Coach Wine puts theinterest of his players and the university in front of anything else. I have no doubt that he will continue to take our program to the nextlevel. Coach Wine will continue to attract top student-athletes that have a love and passion for Penn State and Im conYdent that he willbe able to maximize their potential during their time at University Park.

    -Michael Milliron, Penn State 05

I have a ton of respect for Coach Wine. eres no one else in the game from my view that has brought more energy andpassion and makes playing baseball fun. He made playing so enjoyable. He is very knowledgable and has great insight fromhis playing career. I attribute a lot of my success to his tutelage.

-Billy Gasparino, Current Toronto Blue Jays Scout, Played for Wine at Oklahoma State

I have known Robbie Wine for the better part of 30 years. He was a great player at Oklahoma State when we had many competitivebattles on the Yeld against the Cowboys. We followed his professional career with great interest and had the wonderful experience ofplaying against him since hes been the head coach at Penn State. He is a Yne example for young men everywhere and a great coach aswell. We look forward to many more opportunities to compete against the Nittany Lions in the future.

-Gene Stephenson, Wichita State Head Baseball Coach

Robbie Wine is one of the top coaches in our game. He runs his program in a Yrst-class manner and his players are successful inthe classroom and on the baseball Yeld. I have no doubts that he will continue to build a quality program at Penn State and competefor Big Ten Championships!

-Ritch Price, Kansas Head Baseball Coach

  • ASSISTANT COACHES

roughout his successful collegiate coaching career, Robbie Wine hasrelied on assistant coach Jason Bell to oversee his teams' pitching, both atOklahoma State and now at Penn State. Wine and Bell, in their 10th sea-son together, have produced a talented core of pitchers that are expected toshine in 2011.

Bell, who enters his seventh season in Happy Valley, has served as theteam's pitching coach while also heavily involved in recruiting with fellowassistant coach Eric Folmar. Possessing an impressive list of credentials, theformer second-round Major League Draft pick came to Penn State withWine in the fall of 2004.

In his Yrst six years with the Nittany Lions, Bell has overseen a dramaticimprovement in the pitching sta. Over the last two years, he helped DavidLutz transform into a top-Zight reliever, leading the team in ERA since2009. Bell also helped converted outYelder Scott Kelley make a smoothtransition to the mound, which eventually led to him becoming a 23rdround selection of the Kansas City Royals in the Major League BaseballAmateur Draft. Last season, reliever Heath Johnson was also selected in thedraft after the Yankees took him in the 45th round.

e previous June, one of Bell's protgs became the program's top draftpick as Drew O'Neil was selected in the fourth round by the Chicago WhiteSox. O'Neil, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, tied his own Penn State sin-gle-season saves record with 11 while boasting a 1.88 ERA and allowingjust four earned runs through the regular season.

roughout 2008, Mike Wanamaker made excellent gains, throwing fourcomplete games - including one against Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament- and compiling a 3.41 ERA. Penn State allowed the fewest home runs (26)in the Big Ten that season.

In 2007, Penn State led the conference in ERA (4.05), fewest runs, fewestearned runs and fewest hits allowed to spearhead Penn State's 10.5 gameimprovement from `06. Penn State led Big Ten pitching by wide margins inconference play. e Nittany Lions' 3.41 overall team ERA was tops by a full1.39 runs. e 112 runs and 89 earned runs allowed were also the fewest. In fact, Penn State was the only team to give up less than 100 earned runsin conference play (fewer than three earned runs per game). e NittanyLion hurlers also allowed the second-fewest hits in the league and picked up20 wins, also second-best. Four of Bell's pitchers were drafted come June:Gary Amato, Craig Clark, Scott Ganey and Drew O'Neil. Amato, Clarkand Ganey all signed professional contracts while O'Neil, who set theschool record for saves in a season and had a scoreless inning streak reach20.1 innings, elected to return to school despite being an eighth round pick.

Penn State led the Big Ten in fewest walks with just 157 in 435 inningsof work in 2006. Clark was tied for third in the Big Ten in fewest walkswith just 14 in 91.2 innings, including a streak of 26.2 straight inningswithout a free pass. Overall, the pitching sta had a 2.22:1 strikeout to walkratio and was second in the Big Ten in strikeouts through the end of the reg-ular season before eventually Ynishing in a Yfth-place tie with 349.Additionally, Alan Stidfole, signed a free agent contract with the Toronto
