Water ResearchThe Kiskatinaw River is the only source of water for Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe but where does it even come from? Are the demands on it sustainable? Those are the kinds of questions a UNBC research project is exploring. A team of researchers has been installing monitors and analyzing results to better understand water flows and how they might be affected by climate change and industry.
Medical Grads & Support Floyd Besserer of Fort St. John and Sarah Nimmo of Fort Nelson are the two most recent local grads of the Northern Medical Program. They were among the students who benefited from the Northern Medical Programs Trust, which provides support to medical and Nurse Practitioner students who pursue clinical experiences in northern/rural communities as part of their education. The Trust has recently received gifts from Spectra Energy ($90,200) and EnCana ($50,000).
UNBC’s New Eyes and EarsLinda Selby is the new head of UNBC’s Peace River-Liard regional campus, based in Fort St. John. Selby has more than 30 years of experience in education and moved from New Zealand to join UNBC. She oversees local programming and sees potential for growth: “This is a unique area that could be drawing more students from the region, the province and beyond,” she says. “UNBC will be successful if we’re responsive to local needs and contribute to the overall well-being of communities.”

UNBC Highlights 2011Bioenergy UnderwayChristy Clark was only days into her job as BC Premier when she travelled to UNBC to participate in the official opening of the University’s Bioenergy Plant. The facility uses technology to turn waste wood from Lakeland Mills of Prince George into a gas that is burned to heat the campus. Early tests have demonstrated that the system can produce fewer emissions than burning natural gas. The new plant – which is expected to reduce UNBC’s fossil fuel consumption by 85% – joins a wood pellet system on campus that started operations in 2009.
