Coaching Staff

Paul Rice enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Oakland University men’s and women’s track & field team.

In 2010, the Golden Grizzlies had their best season of track yet. The

season saw 13 athletes earn all-conference honors (top three finish at the league meet) and two qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships.

Indoors at The Summit League Championship, the men scored a school record 75 points to place fifth at The Summit League Championship. It was the first top five finish in school history. The distance medley relay team of Michael Flemming, Kevin Luce, David Magnotte and Jason Bigelow set a fieldhouse record in winning at 10:04.62.

In the 5000, Zack Jones ran 14:57.02 to win by 24/100th of a second. Earning all-league honors as well were Bigelow (2nd - mile), Jeff Decator (2nd - long jump) and Flemming (3rd - 800).

The women scored 30.5 points to finish sixth. Lia Jones was runner-up in the mile while Breanna Peabody placed third in the 60m hurdles.

Outdoors at The Summit League Championship, the men scored a school record 66 points to place seventh. The highlight was Bigelow running a meet record time of 3:47.96 to win the 1500. All-league performances also came from Bigelow (3rd - 800) and Luce (2nd - 110m hurdles).

The women scored 45 points to place fifth, their best finish ever. Micah Jones was runner-up in the high jump while Peabody placed third in the 400m hurdles.

The season didn’t end there as two OU athletes competed in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships. Micah Jones, the first female to qualify, placed 37th in the long jump.

In the 1500, Bigelow placed third in his preliminary heat, then fourth in the second round to become the first OU trackster to qualify for the NCAA Championships. He would place 23rd in the semi-finals.

Overall, the men have had seven Summit League champions, 22 top three finishers in league and 20 top three finishers at the Central Collegiates. In addition to Bigelow, Mike Craze (steeplechase - 2008) and Jeff Decator (100m dash - 2009) qualified for regionals.

The women have had eight top three finishers in The Summit League, two at the Michigan Intercollegiates and nine at the Central Collegiates.

Oakland University Administration

Dr. Gary D. Russi • PresidentSouthwestern Oklahoma, ‘69

Gary Russi has served as Oakland University’s president since 1996, and he held the position of interim president from 1995 to 1996. Under his leadership Oakland completed its first strategic plan, 1995 - 2005. The 10-year plan paved the way for Oakland’s u n p r e c e d e n t e d growth - in stature and size - and is helping the university realize

its 2010 vision. In April 2005 Russi announced the university’s first-ever comprehensive campaign, “Innovation and Opportunity - The Campaign for Oakland University,” with a goal of raising $110 million by 2010. The Campaign for Oakland University is designed to propel the university to the next level in providing a comprehensive liberal education, raising funds for professorships, scholarships, research endowments, academic programs and improved facilities. As of September 2006 the university has raised more than $70.4 million toward that ambitious goal. Oakland University is a top-rated academic institution that is widely recognized as a university on the rise. With a steadily growing student population that topped 18,000 in fall 2006, Russi has worked with the Oakland community to maintain the highest caliber of academic quality and to build an infrastructure that retains the best features of a small campus setting while offering a large array of programs and services. Under Russi’s leadership, Oakland has introduced more than 40 new academic degree programs since 1995. Full-time faculty number more than 440 as of fall 2005, with 50 new positions approved for 2006-07. These new programs and faculty members have drawn a greater number - and an even more talented group - of students to the university. Average high school GPAs and ACT scores of incoming freshmen continue to rise. Russi’s commitment to experiential learning with flexible class schedules, high quality facilities and classroom technologies, and a wide array of student services and research opportunities is helping Oakland grow into a distinctive university focused on delivering a unique and progressive undergraduate education. In addition, during Russi’s tenure, Oakland has invested - often with state support - more than $190 million to enrich environments for teaching, researching, learning, and living. Capital improvements include a $43-million Science and Engineering building, a $37-million Recreation and Athletics Center, the $17.5-million R. Hugh and Nancy Elliott Hall of Business and Information Technology, the $32-million Carlotta and Dennis Pawley Hall and $20-million new student apartments. This trend will continue with the Campaign for Oakland University’s goal of further capital enhancements to support the university’s growth. Russi joined Oakland University in 1993 as vice president for academic affairs where he was responsible for all academic programs, academic support services, research and several

university wide administrative services. In 1995 he assumed the role of interim president. He held both positions until he was named president in 1996. Russi is also a professor in Oakland’s School of Health Sciences. Prior to joining Oakland, Russi was vice president for research and strategic planning at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he served as the university’s chief research administrator and promoted institutional direction and support for faculty research endeavors. While there he was instrumental in focusing university staff resources and budgets to strengthen faculty research. Russi was also very involved there, as he is at Oakland, in supporting and promoting undergraduate student research projects. As vice president for research and strategic planning, Russi also led and managed the application of state-of-the-art information technology in the university’s administrative, educational and research activities. Russi’s administrative career at Drake University began in 1973 as a project coordinator in development and fund raising where he authored, co-authored and/or managed 42 funded grant or contract projects ranging from $200 to $900,000. From there he progressed through a variety of administrative positions, including department chair for the Clinical Externship Program, director of university planning, vice provost for planning and budgeting, and executive assistant to the president. Russi participated in the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program in Academic Administration from 1982-1983 where he served as special assistant to the executive vice president and provost of the University of Nebraska. Russi’s teaching and research experience began at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he was an undergraduate research assistant in chemistry from 1967-1969. His professional teaching and research career began in 1969 when he joined Kansas University as a teaching/research assistant in pharmacology and toxicology. During his tenure at Drake University he held the positions of assistant professor, associate professor and professor of pharmacology and toxicology. From 1973 to 1984, Russi published 17 abstracts and articles in professional journals. Between 1970 and 2006, he co-authored eight scientific articles, dissertations and abstracts. And from 1973 to 1991, he completed 13 invited scientific book reviews. Russi has achieved numerous honors and awards for his many achievements, including the George Wibby Athletic Award from Oakland University (2002), Distinguished Alumni Award from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1998), Honorary Member of Golden Key National Honour Society at Oakland University (1993 to present), Merck Research Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1969) and Rho Chi Society Undergraduate Research Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1969). Russi currently serves as co-chair of the Oakland County Business Roundtable and vice chair of Oakland County Automation Alley. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Crittenton Hospital and the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, serves as chair of the Presidents Council of State Universities of Michigan and is a member of the Detroit Renaissance Board of Directors. Russi earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and his doctor of philosophy degree in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Kansas.

Tracy Huth • Director of AthleticsOakland, ‘84

When one thinks of Oakland University athletics, one of the first names that comes to mind is that of third-year Director of Athletics Tracy Huth. After all, Huth has been involved with Oakland University athletics as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator since the 1980-81 academic year.

Huth was appointed Director of Athletics in October 2007 after serving as the interim director for one year, and immediately put in motion an ambitious plan to enhance the overall Oakland University athletics experience, both for student-athletes and fans alike. The result thus far has been a more fan-friendly atmosphere at all OU events, and increasing student-athlete success both athletically and academically. During his first year as OU’s Director of Athletics, Oakland placed more student-athletes on The Summit League Academic All-League teams than any other institution, and Golden Grizzly teams captured league titles in men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving; and saw the school’s first individual league champion in track and field. The OU basketball programs were the only teams in The Summit League to beat ranked opponents, and Oakland University also played host to The Summit League women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. In the coming year, OU will host the men’s soccer championship and will once again host the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. Prior to making the move into the athletics director’s office, Huth served over nine years as an Associate Athletics Director and Assistant Athletics Director, including a one-year stint OU’s Senior Associate Athletics Director where he was in charge of supervising the department’s operations. While an assistant director, Huth’s primary responsibilities were in the areas of program supervision, student-athlete services, and compliance. During his time as a departmental administrator, Huth has been involved in several league and national committees. In March 2006, Huth was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Swimming & Diving Committee. He has also served on the NCAA’s Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet (2001-05) and served as the tournament manager for the first and second-round games in the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament hosted by Oakland at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Huth currently serves as a member of The Summit League Joint Council, the league’s Budget Committee and Competition Committee, and

also chairs the Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving Sport Committee. The strides made by the athletics program during Huth’s tenure should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his track record as a coach. Huth spent 11 years as the head coach of OU’s women’s swimming and diving program, establishing the Oakland program as the premier program in the country at the Division II level. His teams finished in the top three nationally in nine consecutive seasons, winning five consecutive national championships and three consecutive second-place finishes from 1990-97. Huth was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year three times for his team’s accomplishments. Only Kenyon College (17 consecutive Division III titles from 1984-2000) and Truman State University (six consecutive Division II titles from 2001-06) have posted more consecutive national championships in women’s swimming and diving, while only Texas (five consecutive Division I titles from 1984-88) and Stanford (five consecutive Division I titles from 1992-96) have matched the total of five straight, which stood as a Division II record until 2006. Huth began his coaching career at Oakland in 1985 as an assistant coach with the men’s swimming and diving program, a position he held for two years before taking the reins of the women’s program. Huth remained as the women’s head coach until 1998, when he stepped down to focus on his position as Assistant Athletics Director as OU made the move to Division I. But before Huth became well-known as the highly-successful coach of OU’s women’s swimming program, he earned recognition as one of the top swimmers in the nation. Arguably the most accomplished student-athlete in OU history, Huth earned a rare 24 All-America honors, claiming 13 individual national championships. Huth was a four-time national champion in both the 200- and 400-yard individual medley, and was named NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year three times. He remains the only swimmer in NCAA history to have won both the 200 and 400 IM four times. In 2002 Huth had the unique honor of being selected to the Oakland University Lepley Hall of Honor for a second time. He and is the only member to be enshrined twice. Originally named to the Hall in 1990 for his swimming accomplishments as a student-athlete, his second honor was in recognition of his coaching accomplishments. A native of Yakima, Wash., Huth is a member of the North Oakland Family YMCA Advisory Board and the March of Dimes “Walk America Troy” site committee. He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Oakland in 1985, and in 1996, Huth earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He currently resides in Clarkston with his wife Jenny and has two children, Kara and Chance.

As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues. Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing eld and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees. IUPUI’s Chen Ni made history at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and highlighted the individual accomplishments in 2009-10. The sophomore became The Summit League’s rst female national champion, and fth NCAA titlist overall, when she nished rst in the platform dive. Also garnering national recognition was Oakland men’s basketball player Keith Benson, who received The Summit League’s rst national individual award for basketball performance when he was named the Lou Henson Award winner as the nation’s Mid-Major Player of the Year. The level of performance in men’s basketball continued to rise as The Summit League was one of just six leagues outside of the “power six” conferences to have both of its championship game participants compete with RPI ratings in the top 85. The Summit League had two teams post 25-win seasons, making it one of seven leagues outside of the “power six” and one of 12 overall in Division I to make that claim. Summit League champion Oakland set new standards for season League victories (17), winning percentage (.944) and tied the mark for consecutive League wins (16). The Summit League’s Basketball Championship extended its visibility in 2010, as for the rst time in history all 14 men’s and women’s tournament games were televised, including all seven men’s contests with a national reach via an ESPN platform. Overall attendance in Sioux Falls, S.D., was the second-highest on record and a new women’s quarter nal session mark was set with 5,384 spectators. Several other sports also saw records fall during the 2009-10 campaign. In volleyball, North Dakota State set a new mark with its 37th consecutive League win en route to its second straight undefeated season. Additionally, the League set standards for postseason participation in both track & eld, where an all-time best 50 athletes quali ed for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Rounds, and women’s basketball, where three teams advanced to postseason play. Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams

that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women’s golf and Oakland women’s golf, also received accolades. The national reach of The Summit League continues to expand with member institutions selected as hosts for NCAA Championship events, beginning with UMKC serving as a co-host for the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship. IUPUI will serve as a co-host for the 2011 Women’s Final Four and the 2015 Men’s Final Four and be the host for both the 2013 and 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. League members were selected for several NCAA preliminary competitions with Oakland hosting the 2010 Cross Country Great Lakes Regional and 2013 Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds and IUPUI serving as co-host for one of the four 2013 Men’s Basketball Regionals. Last season’s Summit League accomplishments came on the heels of a successful year in 2008-09. Attendance and sponsorship records were set at the 2009 Basketball Championships, the inaugural season in Sioux Falls. Furthermore, The League saw an unprecedented three teams end the season with a national ranking, a total of seven NCAA Tournament wins, and the NCAA’s largest men’s basketball attendance increase. A pair of former Summit League student-athletes gained individual acclaim on the world stage during the summer of 2008. Former Oral Roberts track star Andretti Bain won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a member of the Bahamas’ 4x400-meter relay team after having claimed both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 400-meter titles earlier in the year. Former IUPUI standout George Hill became The Summit League’s second NBA rst round draft pick when he was selected 26th by the San Antonio Spurs after garnering Summit League Player of the Year honors. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University.

In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed

One of the Summit League’s most iconic moments came when Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew hit “the shot”, a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to top Mississippi in the rst round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Valpo’s story captivated the nation as they became the league’s second team to reach the “Sweet 16.”

More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program nished the 2004 campaign with a national-ranking and became the rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 softball team became the rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament rst round victory. The League has produced ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball rst round picks, a pair of NBA rst rounders and one WNBA selection.
