Nutraceuticals/PhytochemicalsNutraceuticals are substances that pro-
vide a healthy benefit to the human
body. High levels of these compounds
have been identified in all berries.
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries,
blueberries and currants all have gener-
ous quantities of these health-promot-
ing compounds. The varieties marked
with a H in this catalog contain the
highest levels of these phytochemicals.

Nourse Farms
Shrinking budgets for strawberry
research have made it essential to
generate funding from other sources.
NASGA has contacted nurserymen in
the U.S. and Canada with a plan that
collects $1 per 1,000 plants sold. Nourse
Farms has participated in this voluntary
program for over 10 years in an effort to
help make it successful.

Dear Growers,
Thank you for being part of our 79th season! We are excited to offer plants grown under
ideal conditions. Besides the extra attention we give them, Mother Nature provided us
with a nearly perfect growing season. Overall plant health and size could be the best
we’ve ever offered.
The locally grown movement may be new to some, but our growers have always known
there is nothing better than your own fresh fruits and vegetables. Locally grown starts
at home and Nourse Farms offers plants that will produce from summer to fall. We are
pleased to offer two new strawberries, a raspberry, a blackberry and a rhubarb selection,
this year. Our extensive list of varieties will extend picking seasons and increase potential
for successful harvests.
We like to share growing information. We offer local knowledge, and we know the differ-
ent challenges that each region of North America faces. Our staff is up to date on the most
current growing practices and variety choices for those regions. Let us help you be more
successful. At Nourse Farms, we are constantly refining our berry production practices
and passing them on to our customers. We have found that some very small changes can
significantly increase harvest potentials. An example is December pruning of blackberries
and summer raspberries to reduce winter injury. Let us know what you are having trouble
with and we will do our best to provide a recommendation.
Everyone at Nourse Farms is committed to making your season as successful as our own.
Thank you for your support and all the best for the 2011 growing season.
Tim Nourse and the Nourse Family

The Best Berry Plants Since 1932.
Growing berries is not just a way of assuring an abundance of fresh, delicious and colorful fruit; it’s also an easy way to add beauty and interest to your landscape. Since each variety of plant has its own distinct growth habit, the benefit of planting berries offers both aesthetic and practical rewards.
Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspber-ries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.
Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.
Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushes’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests. Strawber-ries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few variet-ies will produce berries all season long.
Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.
The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.
The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months.Because of extra protection from wind and higher tem-peratures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.
Locally Grown starts at Home! How to add beauty, interest, and an abundant supply of delicious
and colorful fruit to your landscape.

Nourse Farms is excited to be offering two new
strawberry varieties for 2011. We’ve been testing
these berries for over three years to make sure
they add something unique and different to the
existing berries on the market. Every one of this
year’s new selections promise superior flavor and
production potentials for each of their mid season
and everbearing rivals. Growing several varieties
of strawberries not only extends the production
cycle, it also spreads the risk of loss to weather
and garden pests. With this year’s additions, your
biggest challenge will be to limit yourself to just
one or two varieties. Our traditional top ten
sellers are a sure bet for satisfaction.

DARSELECT ALLSTAR
Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries.
Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. Apply the straw in mid to late November, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves.
Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: Early planting! Plant as early as possible in the spring. Snow or occasional frost will not hurt most new plants (green tissue culture plants excepted), and spring rains will foster growth. Planting in the fall is not recommended in the Northeast and Midwest.
A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.
Clean beds that are frequently weeded.
Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.
Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance.
Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.
Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Avoid Common Mistakes
Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.
Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.
Pack soil firmly around the roots.
Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown.
Water well one to three times a week, not every day.
Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established.
Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

Strawberry Planting TipsAvoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate dayneutral strawberries.Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down.Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.
Bramble Planting TipsAvoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed.Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress.Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.
Blueberry Planting TipsIMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide.Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration.Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride.Do not fertilize at planting.Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease. Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.
Asparagus Planting TipsDo not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 to 10 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 7-8 inches deep. VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant. Lime may be necessary.
Rhubarb Planting TipsWater well during excessive heat.Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.
Horseradish Planting TipsSpacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.
We’ve had great success by giving berry plants and vegetables a
boost of Agrigel. Keep some on hand! 4oz. (for 400 raspberry
or 2,000 strawberry plants) $3.50; 8oz. $6.40; 16oz. $10.15

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart.
What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival.Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F.
What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is espe-cially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants.
What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our plant-ing stock begins as virus and disease free micro propagated cuttings.
Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more?99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Trellising raspberries is the most important cultural practices, but most people think it is too expensive and time consuming. A simple post with twine could increase potential harvests by 50%.
Prune summer raspberries soon after harvest ends. This will reduce disease pressure on new canes and increase production potentials.
Don’t plant where raspberries were growing for at least 2-3 years. Don’t plant too deep.
Read and keep our planting guide on hand. It will help you care for your raspberries for years to come.
Fall Bearing (Everbearing) varieties produce fruit on first year canes and are usually mowed in the spring to produce a large fall crop.
Polana* Licensed VarietyEarliest everbearing variety. Originated in Poland. At least three weeks earlier than Heritage, Polana allows you to grow fall varieties in more northern locations and still produce a great crop. Its berries are highly productive, large, glossy in appearance, coherent, with good flavor. Canes are vigorous and grow shorter than those of Heritage. Ripens early August in southern New England and late July in southern Wisconsin. In most cases, helps fill in the gap between summer and fall varieties. A great choice for early fall raspberries. Polana needs extra fertilizer in May and June. Zones 3-8.5 for $15.80 • 10 for $24.00 • 25 for $45.25
Jaclyn* U.S. Plant Patent #15,647. Tested as QEG-F1. (Hybrid cross OBC-F1 x Caroline)Fruit is adapted for local shipments, farm markets and pick-your-own operations.A primocane producer, Jaclyn is quite vigorous and erect, growing to 4 to 5 feet tall. Ripening time is similar to that of Autumn Britten. Jaclyn fruit is a distinct dark red when ripe. Drupelets are held tightly together with a long, nar-row plug cavity. Fruit is firm and exhibits less fruit rot and sunscald than other varieties. Fruit needs to be ripe to be removed easily. Flavor is sweet. Plant is field-resistant to many insects and diseases. Shows susceptibility to yellow leaf rust and crown gall. Jaclyn should be planted for its firm berries with excellent flavor for direct marketing or local sales. Grows best in zones 4-8.5 for $15.80 • 10 for $24.00 • 25 for $45.25
Joan J* U.S. Plant Patent #18,954 (Joan Squire x Terri-Louise)This high-yielding, thornless, early primocane variety looks excellent in our first-year trials. One report indicates that Joan J out-yielded Autumn Bliss by more than 30%! The fruit is large and holds its size well. Berries are firm, easy picking (they release well) with small drupelets and good flavor. The fruit will hold and ship well, but it is suseptable to late rust. Highly recommend-ed for planting when early fruit is required. Zones 4-8.5 for $17.20 • 10 for $26.10 • 25 for $49.00

Winter hardi-ness appears to be less than Navaho, similar to Apache. Plants also appear resistant to anthrac-nose and double blossom/rosette, and no orange rust has been seen on any plants. Recommended for trial in the mid-Atlantic, West Coast and South. Best in zones 6-9.5 for $23.30 • 10 for $38.90 • 25 for $85.80
Triple CrownRecommended for home gardeners. A joint release from the USDA-Beltsville and the Pacific West Agricultural Research Service. The Triple Crown plant is semi-erect and thornless and bears large, flavorful fruit. Early trials indicate that it may ripen earlier than Chester and is simi-lar to Chester in winter hardiness. Triple Crown would be a good choice to help extend the black-berry season for home gardeners. Grows best in zones 6-9.5 for $22.80 • 10 for $37.90 • 25 for $83.10
Chester Recommended for beginners.Considered one of the more winter-hardy and productive thornless varieties available, Chester produces large, high-quality fruit that ripens in early- to mid-August. Fruit has good flavor when fully ripe and does not soften or lose its shiny black color in hot weather. Chester plants are vigorous and show resistance to cane blight. Grows best in zones 5-9. 5 for $22.80 • 10 for $37.90 • 25 for $83.10
Plant Breeder Dr. John Clark, from the University of Arkansas, has recently released these new varieties. In northern areas, this development allows blackberry production in regions where other blackberry varieties are not winter hardy. After mowing the canes to the ground early in the spring (like with Heritage) the new growth pro-duces flowers in August and berries in September. We recommend you plant trials of these new varieties to evaluate their performance at your location. Recommended for home gardeners and for local commercial production.
Prime Jim™* U.S. Plant Patent #16,989Produces fewer, but larger sized, firmer berries and has a more up right growing habit than Prime Jan.Grows best in zones 5-8.5 for $24.30 • 10 for $41.05 • 25 for $91.00
Prime Jan™* U.S. Plant Patent #15,788Produces a smaller, but sweeter flavored berry and the plant is more vigorous than Prime Jim. Also slightly earlier fruiting and more productive than Prime Jim. Grows best in zones 5-8.5 for $24.30 • 10 for $41.05 • 25 for $91.00
New for 2011! LIMITED QUANTITIESPrime-Ark® 45* U.S. Plant Patent PendingPrime Ark® 45 is a new release from the University of Arkansas breeding program. It is a thorny pri-mocane-bearing blackberry with an erect growing habit. Fruit size is medium-large and trials indicate that Prime-Ark® 45 is more productive than Prime-Jim. Fruit holds up well after picking and is suitable for shipping. The floricane fruiting season is after Prime-Jim and Natchez and before Ouachita. Early indications are that the primocane crop ripens 12-14 days later than Prime Jim. Ripening may be too late for some northern areas, but will extend the blackberry season for situations where late fruitis desired. High temperatures during flowering will reduce yields. Grows best in zones 6-9.25 for $24.30 • 50 for $41.05 • 100 for $91.00*Price includes a royalty fee. Patent laws prohibit propagation of this variety for sale or trade.

NTING TIPS
Get a soil test for an accurate pH. A pH test kit may not be very accurate.
Blueberries can last for several decades if the pH is below 5.0 and they are planted with wood chips. Following our directions in the planting guide will greatly contribute to your success.
Mulch your blueberries every year with wood chips that are 3-6 months old. This will help keep weeds down and provide a great place for roots to grow. At maturity, six plants can feed a family of four for a year!
Do not use softened water on blueberries. The salts will hurt the plants.
Blueberries only utilize ammoniated forms of nitrogen. Do not use regular 10-10-10.
“I am SO impressed with the products Nourse has. My son is landscape foreman
for a company and my plants are better than theirs! ”

A S P A R A G U SHORSERADISH ROOTS AND RHUBARB
Big TopWe have selected the strain Big Top for its size, vigor, wide adaptability and resistance to foliage diseases, rust and bacterial spot (all common prob-lems in horseradish). These plants are top perform-ers. A few roots will last a lifetime! Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8. Zones 4-8.5 for $10.10 • 10 for $18.40
Long-term investment Asparagus, rhubarb and horse-
radish are all plantings that will continue to yield abundantly for 15 to 20 years
if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game with our one-year-old asparagus
plants, which meet the nursery standard for two-year-old crowns. Growers have
been impressed at how these bigger crowns are jumping out of the ground soon-
er than others. The new male hybrids (90%-95% male) resist fusarium crown rot
and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.

Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A well-balanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.
MacDonald StrainThis strain provides excellent production for com-mercial growers and home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Zones 4-8.3 for $18.65 • 12 for $65.25
New for 2011! Cawood DelightThis variety is not as vigorous as MacDonald, but has deeper red color and slightly thicker stalks. Cawood Delight has a stout growth habit that will excel in northern areas. It may struggle in areas with long periods of high heat. We have had a lot of positive feedback on this variety from commercial growers and home gardeners. Best in zones 4-7.3 for $20.50 • 12 for $72.70
JERSEY SUPREME
Millennium Millennium has established itself as a very high-yield-ing, high-quality hybrid. Developed by Prof. David Wolyn, Univ. of Guelph, Canada, it has become a major contributor to the Ontario asparagus industry, accounting for 70% of all seed sold. Millennium was named “Seed of the Year” in 2005 at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Millennium is also performing very well in Michigan where it is out-yielding all of the Jersey Hybrids in their medium to heavy soils. We recommend trials under your conditions to assess its performance. Zones 3-8.25 for $20.50 • 50 for $35.70 • 100 for $56.70

Tart, tasty, versatile ribes Admired for generations in Europe for their adaptability as plants
and their versatility as food, currants and gooseberries – known collectively as ribes – are growing in popularity in
this country. Gooseberries are good cooked, and eaten fresh they offer a tasty alternative to grapes. Both make excel-
lent jams. Currants, which make a refreshing juice, provide more vitamin C than fresh oranges. Ribes can handle
long cold winters, and have excellent shelf-life. They can stay on the vine for up to two weeks, and keep well after
picking in the refrigerator.

Some states have restrictions on growing ribes (currants and gooseberries). Prior to ordering, please contact your Local Extension Office or Department of Agriculture to determine if there are restrictions in your state.
Plant currants and gooseberries in well-prepared, weed-free soil that contains at least 3% organic matter. Planting on a slight slope will facilitate cold air drainage. Avoid southern-facing slopes, since intense sun may injure the plants. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.3.
Set black currants 4 to 5 feet apart in the row. Black currant rows should be spaced no less than 5 feet apart; 8 to 9 feet apart is recommended for home gardeners, and up to 10 feet apart for machine harvest-ing for commercial production. Refer to page 20 of the Nourse Planting Guide for spacing of red currants and gooseberries. Our extensive planting guide will arrive with each order to provide you with further details for success. Our web site also contains helpful information.
Massachusetts has restrictions on the planting of currants and gooseberries. Please check with the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture for regulations in your area. The elderberry, long known and utilized in
Europe and America, makes a great wine or
jam and is prized for its medicinal qualities.
The flowers can also be used to make syrup and
other recipes. Samdal and Samyl varieties are
both of the Sambucas nigra strain from Europe
and are very high in antioxidants. If the berries
are eaten fresh they’ll give you a stomachache.
But the processed fruit for juice has many
healthy uses. The growth habit makes for a
great annual hedge, with ornamental flowers
and fruit for most of the growing season.
