Greg McGrath returns for his second season atthe helm of the program looking to build off of lastyear's strong finish to the season where they went 12-7over the final 19 games.
The Cadets finished with an overall record of13-24 and a 9-15 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Con-ference play in 2010. NU qualified as the No. 8 seed inthe GNAC Tournament and upset fifth-seeded Lasell inthe first round before bowing out of the double-elimi-nation tournament with losses to Simmons and St.Joseph's (Maine).
The off-season proved devastating to the pro-gram though as Norwich lost rising senior MackenziePratt to cancer. Mackenzie was a standout player andstar pitcher for the Cadets. Moving forward from theloss of Mackenzie, the young Cadets have come to-gether, boasting great potential and exceptional teamchemistry.
Norwich returns three players from last year'ssquad, including an all-conference selection in seniorcatcher Marley Balasco.
Balasco (Barrington, R.I.) earned second-teamhonors after hitting .424 with a team-best 37 runsscored. She also added 12 doubles, two triples, onehome run, and drove in 26 runs while posting a sluggingpercentage of .585 and leading the team with 18 walks.
Seana Ellsworth (Everett, Mass.) and KelseyBuker (Morrisville, Vt.) are the only other returners forthe Maroon and Gold.
McGrath said that the large group of newcom-ers will be vital to the team's success this season and twofreshmen that should help make an immediate impactfor the Cadets this season are Abby Belcher (Winthrop,Mass.) at shortstop and Kim Comtois (Northwood,N.H.) in the outfield.
“Both young women boast an exciting balance ofspeed, strength and athleticism." McGrath said. "Lookfor Belcher to start as the Cadets' shortstop for severalyears to come. Defensively we're looking pretty solid. The pitching staff of three will have to work hard, andour offense, which has great potential, will have to out-pace GNAC competitors."
Sophomore utility players Erin Vien (Plymouth,N.H), Joanie Emerson (Tyngsboro, Mass.), and NoelByers (Iron Mountain, Mich.) all embark on their firstseason with the Cadets and have the ability to play multi-ple positions in the field.
Freshmen Jennette Chartrand (Averill Park, N.Y.)and Pam Dubey (Campton, N.H.) will both compete fortime in the outfield, while Erin Clark (Bradford, Vt.) andMaggie Walsh (North Planfield, N.J.) will lock down thefirst and third base corner-infield positions. RebeccaWeaver (Newport, R.I.) will also provide depth at thecorner-infield positions as well.
McGrath said the team goals for the 2011 seasoninclude beginning the season with the energy and focusseen toward the end of the 2010 season, finishing with aconference record above .500, and earning a chance toreturn to the GNAC Tournament.
"Our team captains [Balasco and Buker] areworking with me to prepare the young team for successin GNAC play," McGrath said. "Marley is the returningteam MVP and has lofty individual goals of earningweekly and yearly GNAC accolades again this year.Kelsey will lead the team as a captain and as the ace inthe circle for the Cadets this year."
Freshmen Kaylie Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) andBriana Day (Yelm, Wash.) will fill out the Cadets' pitch-ing staff along with Buker.
The Cadets open their 2011 campaign with aspring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. and the Gene CusicCollegiate Classic.
