Daniele Souza Moura returns as the top defender for the Trojans. The junior averaged 2.79 digs per set and 1.21 kills per set.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Sept. 20, 2009)MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In the nightcap, Hawkins’ was play was unmatched. She torched the UALR defense for 24 kills and hit .353. Carolyn Baker also got in on the act, hitting .316 with 10 kills and tying a program record with 11 total blocks--three solos and eight assisted. Shaffer led all players with 21 digs and Theard chipped in with 14 digs.

After battling from a 2-1 deficit to force a deciding game, a kill by Katlin Inglish gave Memphis an 8-7 lead midway through the final frame. Both teams struggled to gain control of the set that saw 12 ties and five lead changes. A block by UALR made it 9-10 in favor of the Trojans, but Memphis responded with two points, including an ace by Christine Bach to give the Tigers an 11-10 advantage. The U of M held the lead until Anita Bucur struck with a kill and followed with and ace to put UALR on top 13-12. Hawkins’ 24th kill of the night made it 14-all, but UALR closed the match out with consecutive kills for the 16-14 final.

Memphis hit .273 and held UALR to .120 en route to extending the match to the maximum. Hawkins got the offense going with a pair of kills to open the stanza, and blocks by baker and Inglish made it 3-0. The Trojans fought to tie the set at four, five, six and seven, before a kill by Thompson sent Memphis on a 5-0 run that gave the Tigers a 12-7 cushion. They extended the leads to six points, 19-13, after a kill by Hawkins, but UALR quickly came back with four-straight to cut the Memphis lead to 19-17. Inglish put an end to the run with a kill and the Tigers were able to hold the Trojans off for a 25-21 win.

UALR used a potent offensive attack to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Trojans hit .371 with 17 kills. Meanwhile, Memphis could not keep up with the pace, with a .206 average on 12 kills. The 25-19 margin of victory was the largest for either club all night.

The Tigers held the Trojans to .100 hitting in the second, but could not haul in the win as UALR pulled out a 25-21 win to tie the match. After playing to 14 ties--the last being 21-21--the Trojans scored four-straight to win the set.

GEORGIA STATE2010 NOTES

Georgia State recorded an even, .500 mark of 14-14 during the 2010 campaign, including an 8-6 showing in the CAA. The Panthers won six of seven home confer-ence games and return four starters from the 2010 squad. Vineece Verdun, a 2010 All-CAA Selection, anchors the attack. Last season, Verdun played in 110 sets and recorded 372 kills. Muki Kangwa, an outside hitter, complements Verdun on the at-tach, recording 269 kills of her own in 2010.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Aug. 30, 2002)

STATESBORO, Ga. - Hitting errors forced The University of Memphis (0-1) volley-ball team to drop its season opener against Atlantic Sun conference regular season champ Georgia State, 3-1, in the second game of the Georgia Southern tourna-ment, Friday.

The Tigers, who are without middle hitter Shella Neba, got a career-high 19 kills from outside hitter Brittany Barnett. Barnett also tied for the team lead with 13 digs to post her first double-double of the season.

Sophomore Tiara Gilkey was the only other Tiger to down double-digit kills, posting a career-high 11 kills in the loss. Gilkey added one service ace, two block assists and four digs.

The match was tight from the opening game, with Georgia State edging Memphis, 30-28 before Memphis came back to win game two, 30-26. But the trio of Randi Van Dam, Lisa Lykins and Molly Sapp was too much for a young Memphis team to overcome, as Georgia State took games three and four, 30-21 and 30-27. Randi Van Dam led the Panthers with 16 kills, while Lisa Lykins added 15. Molly Sapp rounded out the double-digit kill leaders with 13 and posted a game-high 14 digs.

Memphis hit just .022 in game one, regrouping to hit a game-high .250 in the game two win. But a .027 hitting percentage in game three and a .179 game four hitting percentage hurt the Tigers as Georgia State hit under .200 in just the open-ing game.

The Tigers’ freshman class had an impressive outing, led by six block assists from middle hitter Kristen Hardee and nine kills from outside Nancy Nellans. Freshman Nan Kimbrell tied with Barnett with 13 digs for the match, while Lauren Berg and Heather Watts each added 10 digs. Watts, Barnett and Kimbrell each added two service aces, while Watts led the team with 43 assists.

WEEKLY NOTES:

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-conference mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational preseason tourna-ments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postseason awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sopho-more season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 cam-paign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match.

Grand ApproachWith two seasons under her belt, Altrese Hawkins is only 182 kills shy of becoming the 21st player in Memphis Volleyball history to record more than 1,000 kills.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, is just two wins away from 800 since the program’s inception in 1971. The team went 17-5 that sea-son, and the program has enjoyed multiple successes since its beginning, highlighted by a trip to the 1994 NCAA Tournament.

From Serbia with LoveThe 2011 Tigers, much like the 2010 team, will have a very European feel. The ros-ter features five players from Serbia (Jovana Barisic, Vesna Jelic, Mrija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, Aleksandra Petronijevic) and one from Hungary (Hajnalka Molnar). Assistant coach Marko Majstorovic is also from Serbia.

Fab 50Entering her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater, head coach April Jauregui is just 10 wins away from reaching the 50-win milestone. If the Tigers win 17-or-more games in 2011, Jauregui will jump to fifth on the all-time coaching win list.

This is Your Captain SpeakingAltrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. Hawkins was named a mem-ber of the 2011 C-USA All-Preseason Team in addition to being tabbed a First Team per-former by COBRA Magazine. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hit-ting percentage in 2010.

Fresh FacesThe Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season.

Juniors RuleWith no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
