Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts colleges. Nestled in the gently rolling country-side of south-central Virginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining men’s colleges.

Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best foundation not only for a professional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship.

As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims to assist students to free themselves from ignorance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from the tyranny of intel-lectual selfishness; and from impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refresh-ment and inspiration in the fine arts.

ONE QUALITY REIGNS SUPREME: LEADERSHIPFrom the beginning, the College’s intent has been to educate the whole individual “in an atmosphere of sound learning.” The College’s history speaks elo-quently of the powerful and enduring character of the ideals of self-reliance and service, and of its own two-hundred years of commitment to the value of self-reliant, disciplined intellect in public life.

In proportion to its enrollment, Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the top five percent of all colleges and universities in graduates listed in “Who’s Who

in America.”

Since 1776, the Col-lege has provided the educational experience necessary to produce leaders in every field of endeavor, including one U.S. President, 12 sena-tors, 32 congressmen, 12 governors, well over 100 state representatives, and a host of ministers, attorneys, doctors and judges.

ouR CaMPusoperation of a dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and professors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams.

Student activities are numerous and diverse, including publi-cation of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station and volunteer fire department along with a wide variety of clubs and other organizations.

Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking, and canoeing, or even electronics and short wave radio, students can find campus organizations that cater to their interests. Many student programs involve a strong commitment of ser-vice to the community, such as the tutoring program for area high school students.

The social life of the College is centered around 11 national fraternities and a strong organization of independents. Con-certs, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a stu-dent-run col-lege activities committee.

The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world of business or for further professional

training in law, medicine, business, government, teaching, or the ministry. Basic to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom hold earned doctorates in their fields and all of whom devote their principal energy to teach-ing. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN ACTIVITIESStudent life is considered an integral part of the education process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes.

A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradi-tion that continues to flourish, upholding the atmosphere of personal integrity, trust, and mutual respect essential to the

Through the generous gift from Lewis C. Everett of Kilmarnock, Virginia, Hampden-Sydney College has completed the construction of the $5 million Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Construction on the 1850 seat facility began in November 2006 and was completed in August 2007. The Everett Stadium replaces the 40-year-old Hundley Stadium adjacent to Fulton Field.

The Lewis C. Everett Stadium, designed by Marcellus Wright Cox Architects, P.C., of Richmond, will blend with the Federal architecture of the Hampden-Sydney College campus. It will provide much needed space for press, scorekeepers, and radio announcers and will include restrooms in the concourse area and a filming platform in the cupola. The interior design of the stadium lounge is by: Penelope S. Crandall, Interior Design Consultant of Midlothian, Virginia, and, Heidi S. Brooks, Interior Design Consultant of Generations Interior Design, Charlottesville, Virginia

The Kirk Athletic Center comprises the completely renovated Gammon Gymnasium and two new wings. It is the home of all field sports - soccer, lacrosse, football, base-ball - as well as cross country, tennis, and golf. The Kirk Center was completed and dedicated in the fall of 2008, and the new additions have provided Hampden-Sydney athletics with some great improvements. Among the additions are four brand new locker rooms for the Tigers, a new training room, a renovated basketball court, new of-fices for coaches and administrators, hall of fame gallery, and classrooms. Now for the first time, each sport has its own locker room, each with direct access to the exterior. Kirk also houses the athletic training staff, the Gammon Weight Room, the soccer locker room, and the new Hall of Fame. The three person training staff Hampden-Sydney now has a room roughly three times the size of the former training room. The new room comes with many new features including six training tables; four whirl-pools, two of which are full body size; two offices; and a flat screen HD television. This new training room accompanies their auxiliary room in Kirby Fieldhouse. The Gammon Weight Room is located on the first floor of the Kirk Athletic Center. It is fully stocked with both free weights and weight machines. Some of the weight machines include two Hammer Strength Jammers, two glute/ham machines, a Hammer Strength leg press, a five pulley cable system, a leg extension/leg curl, a chest press, a military press, a bicep curl, a treadmill, and an upright bike. The free weight equipment include lifting platforms, five deluxe multi racks, five flat-to-military benches, three decline-to-military benches, three dip stations, four stabilization discs, three sets of stretch bands, seven plyometric boxes, and 21 medicine balls. For the first time Hampden-Sydney soccer now has its own locker room. The new room is equip with 41 lockers, new showers, and a state-of-the-art flat screen HD tele-vision. Included in the cable subscription is the Fox Soccer Channel. The locker room is located right next to the training room and has direct exterior access. The new Hall of Fame features new plaques of the 111 inductees along with an interactive touch screen that allows viewers to bring up any inductee on a high definition flat screen by induction type, year, name, or graduation year. The room also features another flat screen television that plays highlight videos from all of the current teams.

In 2007, Hampden-Sydney saw the completion of the Hellmuth-Pritzlaff turf field. The field is the inclement weather home to both the

Tiger lacrosse and soccer teams. The auxiliary field gives the Tigers plenty of room to spread out and use both turf and natural grass.

Miller Field, home of the soccer team, received a recent upgrade with new Pro Premier World Competition Goals. The Pro Pre-mier goals are the official goal of the English Premier League and the World Cup.

aCaDeMiCs In keeping with its original purpose, Hampden-Sydney

seeks “to form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere

of sound learning.” The College is committed to the develop-

ment of humane and lettered men and to the belief that a

liberal education provides the best foundation not only for a

professional career, but for the great intellectual and moral

challenges of life. In an age of specialization, Hampden-

Sydney responds to the call for well-rounded men who are

educated in world cultures and can bring to bear on modern

life the wisdom of the past. The College seeks to awaken

intellectual potential in a search for truth that extends beyond

the undergraduate experience. The College encourages each

student to develop clarity and objectivity in thought, a sensi-

tive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizen-

ship.

The liberal education offered at Hampden-Sydney pre-

pares the student for the fulfillment of freedom. It introduces

the student to general principles and areas of knowledge

which develop minds and characters capable of making

enlightened choices between truth and error, between right

and wrong. The mere facts about a subject do not speak for

themselves. They must be interpreted against a background

of ideas derived from an understanding of the nature of logic,

language, and ethics. The individual who is educated in these

areas and in the basic disciplines is able to confront any event

with true freedom to act, outside the constraints of prejudice

and impulse. Thus Hampden-Sydney’s curriculum is directed

toward the cultivation of a literate, articulate, and critical

mind through the study of the sciences, the humanities, and

the social sciences. It provides both breadth and depth in

learning and encourages independent programs of study.

Believing that education should be a liberating experience

emancipating men from ignorance, Hampden-Sydney strives

to make men truly free.

THE WALTER M. BORTZ III LIBRARY AND FUQUA INTERNA-

TIONAL COMMUNICATIONS CENTER

Opened in the fall of 2007, the Library, named the Wal-

ter M. Bortz III Library in 2009, is an integral resource in the

education offered by Hampden- Sydney, with a collection

that supports the College’s liberal-arts curriculum and a staff

ready to assist students and faculty in its use. The ability to use

an academic library with confidence is one of the distinctive

marks of an educated person. By means of formal and infor-

mal instruction in research methods, students are encouraged

to progress from the heavy reliance on textbooks and as-

signed readings characteristic of the freshman to the indepen-

dent work of the graduate scholar.

The Walter M. Bortz III Library provides an open and invit-

ing atmosphere for study and learning. The wireless configu-

ration of the building makes it easy for students and faculty to

use either laptops or desktops provided on every floor. Group

study rooms are available for use and convenient carrels and

tables provide quiet space for study. Containing more than

250,000 volumes, 280 periodicals, and more than 19,000 e-

journals, an extensive media collection, and government docu-

ments, the collection is arranged in open stacks on the third

floor, with bound periodicals located on the first floor.

season PReview The 2011 Hampden-Sydney Tigers are gearing up for a campaign that will include five Top 25 opponents in Division III. The Tigers graduated 11 seniors from a 2010 squad that earned a 13-5 record and finished the regular season ranked 19th. The 2010 senior class featured Second Team All-American, Academic All-American and ODAC Player of the Year Kyle Jett (39 goals, 29 assists), Honorable All-American Daniel Martin, and a very strong defensive midfielder in Thomas Hovis, who was also a four-year starting linebacker for the Tiger football team. Coach Ray Rostan admits that replacing a good senior class with several stand-outs is never an easy task. “You simply do not replace athletes that have given so much to the program,” said Ray Rostan. “Yet, I believe that the 2011 squad will be highly bal-anced on both offense and defense with the return of the entire starting attack, two of three starting midfielders, and all but one starting close defensemen.” With the return of 6-5 junior Micah Keller (47g, 13a) and junior Ben Clarke (34g, 16a), the Tiger attack should again be potent. Keller and Clarke will be supported by two experienced attackmen in junior Nate Cundy, 6-5 sophomore Ryan Martin, and Kyle Fox. A freshmen that will most likely see playing time early is 6-4, 235 lbs. Eric Gorsline who was also a tight end for the football team this fall, and Harper was one of the Tigers leading goal scorers in the fall season. Newcomer sophomore Derek Fim-ian will support the attack. Offensive Coordinator Jason Rostan states: “This will be a highly balanced attack with men that bring

great effort and attitude every day to the field. They are a plea-sure to work with.” The Tiger first midfield returns two exceptional talents in senior Cole Hawthorne (25g, 21a). Hawthorne is the typical point guard of the offense, according to Coach Rostan, playing with great speed, vision and heart. Junior Carter Mavromatis (17g, 22a) joins Hawthorne for the third year, running on the starting unit. Another highly intelligent and competitive midfielder, Mavroma-tis has speed along with great field sense and vision. The coaching staff is very pleased with the depth in the mid-field, including the return of standout senior captain Jake McDon-ald. Coach Rostan believes that McDonald is one of the finest ath-letes nationally and has the heart and speed to be a major scoring threat along with being the team’s top defensive midfielder. Senior captain Ryan Grodzki is one of the midfields inspira-tional leaders and hardest working defensive midfielders. Return-ing sophomores Brad Mostowy and Jess Hawthorne will be major factors for the Tigers both offensively and defensively. Mostowy, an outstanding athlete and competitor, also became the Tigers top face-off midfielder in the final games of his freshmen season winning 55.2% of his face-offs in the Tigers final five games. Freshman Bobby Fulton entered H-SC in great physical condi-tion and joined Hawthorne and Mavromatis on the first midfield in fall workouts. Fulton was the Small School Football Player of the Year in the state of Georgia while playing for the Wesleyan (Ga.) School. “He’s a 6’-0”, 205-pound rock,” said Offensive Coor-

dinator Jason Rostan. “Skill-wise, he’s as good as anybody on the team with both hands.” The coaching staff is very pleased with the athletic depth at midfield with the return of junior David Beman and Sandy Wall, sophomores Trent Joyner and Jacob Oliver, along with a highly athletic freshmen class including Chase Brown, Matt Free-man, Arley Morelock, Matt Kusel and Luke Driscoll. According to Coach Rostan, “any one of our midfielders has the physical ability and speed to step in and contribute within our top three midfields and defensive midfields.” The defense returns strong experience with the return of seniors Peter Foley and Tim VanBenthuysen along with juniors Nate Norbo and Andrew Pritzlaff. Peter Foley, a four-year starter, makes a day-to-day inspirational physical impact for the Tigers. Norbo, the Tigers hardest working athlete in the weight room and therefore the Tigers strongest athlete, had a very strong fin-ish to the 2010 season. Andrew Pritzlaff has great feet and can run with the oppo-nent’s quickest attackman. VanBenthuysen, an intense competi-tor, is a natural leader in his work ethic and ability to play physi-cal and tight man-to-man defense. In fall workouts, athletic 6-2, 210 lb. sophomore Cameron Sheppard showed good footwork and has an opportunity to become a starter for the Tigers. Also playing well in fall work-outs and pushing for playing time was a skilled junior in Jack Gibson. Freshman Ned Bowden, a rangy 6-4 athlete, was also impressive toward the end of fall

practices. Junior Clark Reed, sophomore Burke Best, strong fresh-man Chris Stockinger and transfer Andrew Grover will competi-tively push the close defense. At the position of long pole midfield/defense, senior speed-ster Nick West returns with two years of starting experience. Supporting West will be sophomore Evan Cumalander, and three very athletic freshmen in Mac Foley, Matt Stockinger and two-sport athlete Nate Ott. At the all-important position of goal, the Tigers graduated a fine starter in Mark Bagby in 2010. Enthusiasm is high for the Ti-gers, however, with the return of two sophomores, Austin Black and Cody Hornung. Coach Rostan states, “Hornung and Black are both among the hardest working goalies that I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. I truly believe that their work ethic will take them a long way in their college careers.” The position will be supported by a very quick handed senior in Ben Hansell and a 6-2 athletic and talented lefty in Will Janney. The Tigers will need to clean up some things, yet optimism is running high for Hampden-Sydney. “I’m usually careful with projections as our league is highly competitive nearly from top to bottom,” said Rostan, who led the Tigers to the ODAC semi-finals last year. “By the same token, I feel like we are moving in the right direction.” This team is led by a very fine senior class, including four great Captains in Ryan Grodzki, Cole Hawthorne, Peter Foley and Jake McDonald. We show balance at every posi-tion. We will take one day and one game at a time.”

2011 Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse

2010 season ReCaPThe 2010 Tigers completed an exciting season with a 13-5 re-cord, tying the single-season lacrosse record for victories, and a 19th national ranking. We enjoyed some very fine moments and highlights this season including an excit-ing victory at 13th ranked nationally Washington and Lee, and victories over ODAC rivals Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon. The Tigers were undefeated on the road during the regular season with a 7-game away-game winning streak. That streak was broken in the

ODAC Semi-final game at Lynchburg when the Tigers dropped a hard-fought, 7-10 decision. Thanks to the dedication and hard work by senior parent, Mr. Arthur Kelley, you may find many excellent highlights of H-SC Lacrosse 2010 by clicking here.

The program will miss an outstanding senior class of Captains Mark Bagby, Kyle Jett and Dan-iel Martin, as well as Kevin Coats, Thomas Hovis,

Whit Kelley, Andrew O’Shea, Hunter Phillips, Joe Severns, Peter Squire and Mario Wash-ington. This was one of the most exceptional recruiting classes to attend Hampden-Sydney in program history. All of these men contributed to the successful 2010 season and to four good years.

Senior Captain Kyle Jett had an exceptional season leading the ODAC in midfield scor-ing with 68 points. Kyle was also voted the Player of the Year and the Scholar Athlete of the Year in the ODAC. At the All-American banquet in Baltimore, Kyle was recognized with Academic All-American honors and USILA All-American honors (2nd Team). Kyle also represented Hampden-Sydney in the North-South Game.

Jett’s 68 points by a Tiger midfielder in a single season sur-passes both Jason Rostan (2003 - 2nd) and

Jeff Jackson (1988 - 1st) for the number one spot. (After graduating from Hampden-Sydney in 1988, Jeff Jackson went on to play for the 1990 USA Team and World Champions, one of only three D-III play-ers to ever play for a USA Team). Jett’s

145 career points now places him second all-time among Tiger midfielders at

Hampden-Sydney (only behind Jeff Jackson). His 39 goals this season surpass his career high set last year, and his 29 assists are a new career high.

2011 Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team opened up their 2010 season with an 11-7 win over the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington on Saturday at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. Seven different players scored for the Tigers, led by senior attack Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) who scored 4 goals.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard just 30 seconds into the game when senior midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) scored an unassisted goal. Mary Washington got onto the board 4 minutes later when Brian Meaney found the back of the net. Hampden-Sydney responded just 30 seconds later when Coats scored his first goal on an assist from sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry). The Eagles responded with a goal of their own a minute later, before both teams buckled down on defense and shut each other out for the remainder of the period.

Mary Washington took their only lead of the game 4 minutes into the second quarter on a man-up opportunity, but the Tigers responded just 14 seconds later when freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) notched his first career goal to knot the score at 3. Neither team was able to score again until junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Colle-giate) found the back of the twine with just 14 seconds left to give the Tigers a 4-3 halftime lead.

Hampden-Sydney came out with guns blazing in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals in the first three and a half minutes. Coats scored two while Mavromatis scored the other during the spurt. The two teams traded goals over the next five minutes, each scoring two during the stretch. Coats punctuated the big third quarter for the Tigers on a goal with a minute and a half left off of a nice assist from Jett to make the score 10-5.

Mary Washington got off to a quick start in the fourth quarter with a goal just 35 seconds into the frame, but the Tigers re-sponded a few minutes later when senior Andrew O’Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored on an assist from Hawthorne. The Hampden-Sydney defense buckled down over the rest of the quarter, allowing only one more goal to punctuate their solid day. Senior goalie Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) was solid between the pipes all day, stopping 14 shots.

On the day, the Tigers outshot Mary Washington 39 to 31, while the Eagles collected 40 ground balls to the Tigers’ 37. In addi-tion to Coats’ four goals, Mavromatis had a solid game with three assists to go along with two goals and six ground balls. Haw-thorne also picked up five ground balls to go along with his goal and two assists. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 1-0 overall.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - It was a tale of two halves today at Lewis C. Everett Stadium as the Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team fell to #3 Gettys-burg College. After leading at the end of the first three quarters, the Tigers were unable to hold off the Bullets in the fourth period, eventu-ally falling by a margin of 17-10.

Hampden-Sydney opened the game employing a deliberate game plan and worked it to perfection in the first quarter. Sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) opened the scoring for the home squad with his first goal of the season just two minutes into the game. Freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) scored a goal two min-utes later on an assist from sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy), and the fired-up home squad took advantage of their momentum. Junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored two straight goals, followed by a tally from Clarke to close the first quarter with a 5-0 lead.

Keller opened the second quarter the same as the first, finding the back of the net just 12 seconds into the period on assist from Kyle Jett (Suf-folk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk). Gettysburg first got onto the scoreboard 3 minutes later on a goal from Kyle McGrath, but Keller answered back with 5 minutes remaining in the half to put the Tigers up 7-1. Gettys-burg’s Chris Cahill was able to find the net twice more in the stanza to make the halftime score 7-3 in favor of Hampden-Sydney.

Hawthorne opened the second-half scoring, beating the Gettysburg goaltender two minutes into the third quarter to secure a hat trick. The rest of the quarter belonged to the Bullets, despite goals from Keller and sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry), as they outscored the Tigers 6-2, including a Kyle McGrath goal with just two seconds remaining in the period. The game headed to the fourth quarter with Hampden-Sydney clinging to a 10-9 lead.

Gettysburg struck first just one minute into the fourth quarter and seized the momentum from that point on, going on to score eight goals in the period while blanking the Tigers. Several Hampden-Sydney players put forth solid efforts against the defending national runner-up, including Keller’s four goals and one assist and Hawthorne’s three goals and two assists. Clarke contributed three helpers to go with his one goal. HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team’s fourth quarter rally was not quite enough to push them over the hump as the Tigers fell to #13 nationally ranked Cabrini College. On a cold and rainy day at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff turf field, Hampden-Sydney was unable to get anything going early on and the early deficit proved too much for the home squad, as Cabrini prevailed 11-6.

Cabrini opened the scoring two minutes into the game on goal by James Barraclough, but from there the Tiger defense really stepped up their intensity and focus, shutting out the Cavaliers for the remainder of the quarter. Despite outshooting Cabrini 8-4, scooping 12 ground balls to Cabrini’s 7, and winning both face-offs, Hampden-Sydney was unable to find the back of the net in the quarter.

Cabrini was again able to strike first in the second quarter, this time scoring three straight goals in the first two minutes of the period. The Tigers finally made it onto the scoreboard at the 8:46 mark when senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) made an inspired effort to beat a defender and the goalie. Just one minute later, sophomores Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA) and Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) were able to team up to score, when Clarke found Mavromatis, who buried a shot to bring the score to 4-2. Cabri-ni, however, was able to respond with two more goals before halftime to make the score 6-2 at the break.

After a third quarter during which Cabrini scored three goals, the Tigers came flying back to make things interesting. The run started two minutes into the final quarter when senior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) found sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) for a goal. Two minutes later, the pair connected again to bring the score to 9-4. After a Cabrini goal from Paul Skulski, Jett

picked up his third assist of the game on freshman Brad Mostowy’s (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) first career goal. Two minutes later, Mavromatis scored his second goal of the game off of a nice pass from junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) to bring the score to 10-6. Despite the late run, the Tigers did not have enough time to make up the rest of the deficit, falling by a final margin of 11-6.

Despite the loss, several Hampden-Sydney players turned in impressive efforts. Mostowy, in addition to grabbing a team-high 6 ground balls, won 10 out of 15 faceoffs. Senior defenseman Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) smothered preseason National Player of the Year candidate Casey Grugan, harassing him all game long. Senior goalie Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) made some impressive one-on-one saves as well.

On the day, Cabrini outshot Hampden-Sydney 39 to 31, and scooped up 42 ground balls to the Tigers’ 41. The Tigers took 11 of 20 faceoffs. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 1-2 on the season.

Arlington, VA • March 6ARLINGTON, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team evened their 2010 record at 2-2 with a solid 14-8 win over the Saints of Marymount Uni-versity on Saturday night. After a 5-5 tie in the third quarter, the Tigers used a nine-goal spurt to take a commanding lead that they would not relinquish. Hampden-Sydney was led on the day by senior midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk), who scored four goals.

Marymount got onto the scoreboard first, scoring a goal on an extra-man opportunity three minutes into the game. Jett, however, respond-ed with a goal of his own just moments later, and a Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) goal with eight minutes left in the quarter gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. The quarter would end with Hampden-Sydney leading 2-1.

The Saints again struck first in the second quarter, finding the net just 15 seconds into the period, but sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) answered right back a minute later with a goal of his own. Marymount scored once more in the quarter, and Tiger sopho-more Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) capped off the first half scoring with a goal on an assist from sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) to give the Tigers a 4-3 halftime lead.

Jett opened up the second half scoring with a strike three minutes into the third quarter to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead, their largest lead up to that point. Marymount, however, responded with two quick goals in less than a minute to knot the score at 5-5. Undeterred, the Tigers buckled down and began their game-breaking nine goal run that stretched through the majority of the third and fourth quarters. Haw-thorne got things started, finding the twine with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Two more goals from Jett, another from Hawthorne, and a strike from freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) made the score at the end of the third quarter 10-5 in favor of Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers pushed the pedal down to open the fourth quarter, as senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) scored two goals in two minutes. Clarke and Keller added two more goals to push the lead to its largest of the game at 14-5 with six min-utes left in the game. Marymount scored three goals late, but the Tiger lead was too much, and Hampden-Sydney prevailed by a final score of 14-8.

On the night, the Tigers converted on an impressive four out of six extra-man opportunities, and scooped up 34 ground balls to Marymount’s 26. Freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) led Hampden-Sydney with eight ground balls, and Keller chipped in with five. Senior goalie Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) was again solid between the pipes, making 11 saves in his 48 minutes of action.

Washington College 8Chestertown, MD • March 10

CHESTERTOWN, MD (March 10, 2010)-After building a 6-1 lead in the first quarter over host Washington College, Hampden-Sydney contin-ued to flex its offensive firepower by tacking on eight more goals in the second quarter to take a 14-4 advantage at halftime. The Tigers held on in the second half to take a convincing 17-8 win over the Shoremen. In the win, senior midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanse-mond-Suffolk) had his breakout game of the season with a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists.

Jett put his team on the scoreboard early with a goal just a minute and a half into the game. Just one minute later, sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) found the net for the second time this season to make it a 2-0 Tiger lead.

The goals continued to come for Hampden-Sydney, and after two Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) goals, the Tigers lead 6-0 with two minutes remaining in the first stanza.

With just 29 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, however, Washington attack Matt Lewis broke the drought with a goal.

Hampden-Sydney came back in the second quarter to reel off three more goals with one from senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) and two from junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate). Over the next three minutes, Hampden-Sydney and Washington would trade three goals a piece to give the Tigers a commanding 11-4 lead.

Jett and sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) fin-ished off the half with three unanswered goals to take a 14-4 halftime advantage.

Though Washington would score the first goal of the second half, 14-5 would be as close as they would come with Clarke, Jett and Hawthorne all scoring in the quarter to put the game all but out of reach at 17-5

going into the final quarter.

Shoreman Matt Lewis was able to find the net twice in the final stanza with teammate Jesse Speth also scoring to bring their team with nine, but they would come no closer than the final margin of 17-8.

While Jett recorded seven points, Clarke scored a game-high four goals while Keller and Hawthorne each added three. The Tiger defense was impressive all day, holding the Shoremen to just eight goals while sophomore Andrew Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) led the way causing five turnovers and junior Peter Foley (McLean, VA/Langley) scooped up six groundballs.

Senior net minder Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) was brilliant between the pipes recording 19 saves in just over 52 min-utes of work.

Washington edged the Tigers in faceoffs winning 16 to the Tigers’ 12, while Hampden-Sydney’s Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) won 11 of his 21 attempts. Hampden-Sydney, however, did dominate the ground balls scooping up 37 to the Shoremen’s 28.

Freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) set the tone for the Tigers right out of the gate, winning the opening faceoff, scooping up the ground ball and streaking through the defense before unleash-ing a shot that beat the Elizabethtown goalie. The Tigers would never look back, adding a Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) goal five minutes later, a Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) goal with one minute left in the period, and a Keller buzzer beater with one sec-ond left to give the home squad a 4-1 first quarter lead.

Senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) opened up the second quarter scoring with a strike just a minute in on an assist from Keller. Keller then scored two more goals sandwiched around an Elizabethtown goal to give Hampden-Sydney a 7-2 halftime lead. LEXINGTON, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team put together an outstanding effort on a warm spring night under the lights in Lexington, dropping the #13 Washington and Lee Generals by a score of 13-10. The Tigers never trailed in the contest, and with the win, maintained their perfect road record this season.

Sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) opened up the game’s scoring, finding the back of the twine seven minutes into the game after making a nice spin move to get open. The Generals were able to score a late goal to make the first quarter score 3-1 in favor of the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney again struck first in the second quarter, when fresh-man Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) beat the keeper off of a nice setup from junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate). After a Generals’ goal, senior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) raced through the defense and set up Keller for his third goal of the game from point blank range with 8:29 left in the quarter. Three minutes later, senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) fired a shot that found the back of the net and gave Hampden-Sydney a 6-2 lead. On the Tigers’ next offensive possession, a Hawthorne shot hit the pipe, and in the ensuing scramble to scoop up the ground ball, Clarke was able to knock the ball past the keeper for his second tally of the day. A pair of late W&L goals made the score 7-4 in favor of the Tigers heading into the halftime break.

The Tigers started the third quarter the same way as the first two, this time taking advantage of their first extra-man opportunity of the day. Keller zipped a pass from out top to a streaking Jett in front of the crease, and the captain was able to bury it for an 8-4 lead. W&L answered back, however, with a strike of their own just moments later. The Generals responded less than a minute later with a goal of their own, before Clarke scored his fourth of the day with eight minutes left to play to give Hampden-Sydney an 11-7 lead. The Tigers pushed their lead to five moments later when sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) was able to find the net for his first goal of the day, before Hawthorne scored one of his own one minute later to make the score 13-7. Hampden-Sydney came out of the break hungry for more, and added another tally just one minute into play. On the play, Mavromatis used a pass fake that juked both of the Whittier defenders along with half of the crowd and buried a shot to push the lead to seven. Keller scored his fifth goal moments later on an assist from Jett before Whittier responded with a goal of their own. Mavromatis struck again for the Tigers, however, this time on an assist from Martin. The Tigers scored their second man-down goal of the game on a wild sequence as time was running out. On the play, the Hampden-Sydney defense forced a Whittier turnover. Junior Nate Norbo (Waterford, VA/Loudoun Valley) picked up the ball and flung a pass the length of the field, where freshman Martin was able to get a hit on the Whittier keeper. Cole Hawthorne then raced in, scooped up the ground ball and buried it in the open net for his second tally of the day.

Whittier scored three quick goals to start the fourth quarter before Jett responded with his third and fourth goals, sandwiched around a goal from senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), to make the final score 17-8. On the day, the Tigers did an excellent job in face-offs, winning 20 out of 27. They also outshot the Poets 39-30, scooped up 48 groundballs to Whit-tier’s 38, and held Whittier to just 16 out of 27 on clear attempts. Freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) had an outstanding day, winning 16 of 19 face-offs, and grabbing an ODAC season-high 13 ground balls. The Hampden-Sydney defense put together another stout effort, limiting the Poets’ opportunities all game long. Senior captain Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) allowed only five goals in 45 minutes of play while making six saves in the goal, while senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) caused two turnovers.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team honored its seniors playing in their final home game today in a ceremony before the game, then sent them out as winners with a thorough 15-1 victory over ODAC opponent Randolph College. The Tigers never trailed in the game, and a season-high 13 different players scored goals for Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers got onto the board first just over a minute into play when senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) scored an unas-sisted goal. Jett struck again six minutes later to put the Tigers up 2-0. On the ensuing face-off, senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) controlled the draw, raced through the Wildcat defense and buried a shot for a three-goal lead. Less than one minute later, senior Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s) was able to score an unassisted goal, before sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Acad-emy) scored off of an assist from freshman Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate). Sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) upped Hampden-Sydney’s lead to six with a goal with two minutes left in the quarter on a setup from junior Cole Hawthorne (Rich-mond, VA/Collegiate).

The Tigers were again the aggressors in the second quarter, and junior Dudley Locke (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) scored a goal two minutes in on an assist from senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle). Senior Hunter Phillips (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored his first goal of the season with just under three minutes to play in the half to put Hampden-Sydney 8-0, before classmate Mario Washington (Char-lottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) made a nice move to find the back of the net with under one minute left. With under ten seconds to play in the half, Washington was able to find Locke, who tallied his second goal of the day to get Hampden-Sydney into double digits at halftime. The

Tigers dominated every aspect of the first half, outshooting Randolph 39-2, winning 10 of 12 face-offs, and grabbing 40 ground-balls to 13 for the Wildcats.

Jess Hawthorne got the second half scoring started with an unassisted goal one minute into the third quarter, before junior Ryan Grodzki (Barrington, IL/Barrington) scored his first career goal on a solo effort seven minutes later. Randolph’s Stephen Allman scored the Wildcats’ lone goal of the day with three and a half minutes left, before sophomore Nate Cundy (Midloth-ian, VA/James River) struck on an assist from sophomore Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) to put the Tigers up 13-1 at the end of three quarters.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, freshman Jacob Oliver (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored his first career goal, before senior Peter Squire (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) punctuated his senior day with his first career goal to make the final margin 15-1 for Hampden-Sydney. On the day, the Tigers were very evenly balanced and dominated the statistical categories. They posted season highs in shots with 64 and in ground balls with 62, and only committed 11 turnovers. Seniors Peter Foley (Mclean, VA/Langley) and Joey Severns (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), along with Oliver and junior Nick West (New Canaan, CT/The Gunnery) each caused two Randolph turnovers as well.

GREENSBORO, NC (April 17, 2010)- The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse Tigers continued their winning ways and maintained their perfect road record today with a convincing 19-8 win at ODAC foe Guilford College. Hamp-den-Sydney has won 9 of its last 11 contests, and now boasts a season-high four game winning streak. The Tigers were led on the day by sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) who scored four goals, and senior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk), who added two goals and three assists. Jett’s five points on the day vaulted him into sole possession of third place in career points by a Hampden-Sydney midfielder with 135.

The Tigers jumped out to the early lead, with Jett striking less than one minute into the game on an unassisted effort. Sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) followed that with a goal of his own off of an assist from freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), before Clarke scored his first off of a setup from Jett. After the Quakers scored their first goal to pull to 3-1, Keller again scored on an assist from Martin, then followed it up with another strike on an assist from Clarke. Clarke then scored two more goals sandwiched around a Guilford goal to make the score at the end of one quarter of play 7-2 in favor of the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney again struck first in the second period when senior Kev-in Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) took a pass from Jett and buried it for an 8-2 lead. Guilford then proceeded to score three straight goals to pull within three, but the Tigers added four more before the half to put some distance between the two teams. Senior Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) started the spurt on a goal with an assist from Clarke, then Jett took a Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) pass and buried it for another goal. Martin and Kelly each added another goal to make the halftime score 12-6 in favor of the visitors.

The Tigers closed the door on whatever glimmer of hope Guilford had left in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals to open second-half play. Clarke scored an unassisted goal, then sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) got in on the action, scoring his first of the day. Freshman Alex Clay (Alexandira, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) then scored his first career goal on an assist from Jett to make the score 15-6.

After Guilford struck first in the fourth quarter, it was all Hampden-Sydney the rest of the way, with the Tigers scoring the last four goals of the game. Coats started the spurt with his second goal of the day, before senior Mario Washington (Charlottes-ville, VA/Western Albemarle) scored two straight himself. Senior Peter Squire (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) finished off the scor-ing with a goal with five minutes remaining in the game to make the final score 19-8.

On the day, the Tigers outshot the Quakers by a margin of 47 to 18, and grabbed 42 ground balls to 20 for Guilford. Hampden-Sydney also won 18 of 29 face-offs, and senior captain Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) made three saves in earning the win.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The #20 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse Tigers ran their winning streak to five games today with a con-vincing 16-8 win at Christopher Newport. The victory also maintained the Tigers’ perfect road record on the season. On a day that started in a driving rain, Hampden-Sydney started slow, but overcame an early deficit to assert their dominance by halftime. The Tigers were led by sopho-more Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) who scored three goals and added two assists, and classmate Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) who also added a hat trick.

Christopher Newport was able to get on the scoreboard first and did a nice job early of containing the Tiger attack. It wasn’t until almost halfway through the quarter that Hampden-Sydney finally found the net with a goal from freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) on an as-sist from junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate). The Tigers followed that with a goal from sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) that was set up by senior captain Kyle Jett (Suf-folk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk). Cundy struck for the first time off of a pass from Martin four minutes later, before senior Kevin Coats (Charlot-tesville, VA/Albemarle) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 4-1 at the end of the quarter.

On the second quarter face-off, freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) controlled the draw, and raced through the Captain defense before finding an open Cundy in front of the cage for the easy put away. CNU answered back with two straight goals in man-up situ-ations however, to draw withing two at 5-3, but Jett responded with a goal before Cundy scored his third of the day on a setup from Keller. The Captains remained resilient, though, scoring two more quick goals to bring the score to 7-5, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game. Keller proceeded to go on a personal rampage, scoring three straight goals to blow the game wide open, with assists coming from Martin and sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Nor-folk Academy). Clarke then added a goal of his own on an assist from

Keller with a minute and a half left to play to make the halftime score 11-5 in favor of the Tigers.

As the sun came out to start the second half, the Tiger defense stepped up their game, holding the Captains scoreless for all but six seconds of the third quarter, thanks in large part to some stellar goalkeeping from freshman Cody Hornung (Bala Cyn-wyd, PA/Lower Merion). Hawthorne scored two goals in the period on assists from Mavromatis and Jett to make the score after three periods of play 13-6.

The Tigers added three more goals in the fourth quarter, the first coming from freshman Alex Clay (Alexandria, VA/St. Ste-phen’s & St. Agnes) on an assist from senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), marking his first career assist. Freshman Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) added an unassisted goal, before sophomore Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Os-bourn Park) scored his first tally of the season on an assist from Coats to give Hampden-Sydney the 16-8 win.

On the day, Hampden-Sydney outshot CNU 48-36, and grabbed 31 ground balls to 30 for the Captains. 11 different players scored goals for the Tigers, their second highest number in a game this season. Mostowy led Hampden-Sydney with four ground balls, and junior defenseman Peter Foley (McLean, VA/Langley) caused three turnovers to lead the Tigers on the defensive end.

ASHLAND, VA - The #20 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team closed out their regular season with a 12-8 victory over Randolph-Macon today, their sixth consecutive win entering postseason play. In holding the Yellow Jackets to single digits, it was also the sixth straight opponent that Hampden-Sydney has kept under ten goals. On a day when the Tigers completed a perfect road regular season at 7-0, they were led by senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk), who scored five goals and added an assist to move into a tie for first place in single-season points by a midfielder with 62. With his six points on the day, he also took over sole possession of second place in points by a Tiger midfielder with 145.

Hampden-Sydney came out the aggressors early on, and capitalized with two quick goals from sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) less than three minutes into play. Randolph-Macon responded with a goal of their own a few minutes later, but sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) answered for the Tigers, finding the net with two and a half minutes left on the clock. The Yellow Jackets were able to tack one more on with under a minute to play to make the score after one quarter 3-2 in favor of Hampden-Sydney.

If there was any doubt about who was in control of the showdown between arch rivals, it ended in the second quarter as Hampden-Sydney outscored Randolph-Macon 5-0 to blow the game wide open heading into halftime. Sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) found the net first on an assist from Jett, before Jett scored four consecu-tive goals, including a no-look shot that fooled the entire Macon defense. Junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and Keller provided assists on two of Jett’s second-quarter goals, and the Tigers headed into halftime with a commanding 8-2 lead.

Though the Yellow Jackets struck first in the third quarter, Hampden-Sydney was up to the challenge, scoring three straight on goals from Hawthorne, Keller, and Jett to give the Tigers their largest lead of the day at 11-3. Randolph-Macon didn’t give up, however, and scored four straight goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to draw within 11-7 with six and a half minutes to play, but Clarke scored another goal on an outstanding effort to put Hampden-Sydney up by five. The Yellow Jackets added another goal late, but it was not enough as the Tigers prevailed.

In addition to Jett’s outstanding day, several other Tigers reached career milestones. Keller’s three tallies pushed him over 40 goals on the season with 42 thus far, Clarke’s two goals gave him 30 on the season, and Hawthorne’s goal and assist pushed him over 40 points on the season with 41. Senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) led the way on defense, causing two turnovers and grabbing a season-high 8 ground balls. Freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) had a solid day in face-offs, controlling 12 of 19 draws. With four groundballs, Mostowy also went over 80 on the season with 83 thus far. Freshman Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) made some spectacular saves in the goal as well.

The Tigers outshot Macon on the day 40-31, grabbed 43 ground balls to 27 for the Yellow Jackets, and won 15 of 24 face-offs. With the win, Hampden-Sydney’s record moves to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC. The 12 wins are tied for the second most in a single season in school history.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The #19 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team advanced to the ODAC semifinals today with an 18-9 win over Virginia Wesleyan, and in the process tied the program record for most wins in a single season with 13. It was the Tigers seventh consecutive victory, and also marked the seventh straight opponent that they have held in single digits. The Tigers stormed out of the gates early and grabbed a big lead, but Virginia Wesleyan was able to climb back into the contest heading into halftime. The Tigers responded with a third quarter blitzkrieg in which they scored a season-high nine goals in one period to end the visitors’ hopes for an upset. Hampden-Sydney was led on the day by senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk), who scored four goals and added an assist. Jett now has 67 points on the season, which marks the most single-season points by a midfielder in Hampden-Sydney history. The Tigers set the tone from the opening face-off, where freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) controlled the draw, raced through the Marlin defense and ripped a shot past the goalie to give the home squad the lead just nine seconds into play. Jett scored his record-breaking point on a goal moments later on an assist from junior Cole Haw-thorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate), before Hawthorne scored one of his own to put the Tigers up 3-0 just four minutes into the game. Sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) got in on the action with a strike two minutes later, but Virginia Wesleyan then scored three straight to make the score 4-3 in favor of Hampden-Sydney after one quarter of play. The second quarter began just like the first, with the Tigers control-ling the opening face-off. Sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) raced in and grabbed the ground ball before blazing past a pair of Marlin defenders and burying a shot past the keeper just 11 seconds into the action. Sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch), who had been the focal point of the Virginia Wesleyan defense, was finally able to break through moments later with a nice spin move and shot to give Hampden-Sydney a three goal lead. The visitors responded again, however, with two more goals, including a back-breaker with one second remaining in the quarter to draw within 6-5 heading into the locker room. Motivated by the close score, the Tigers came flying out of the locker room and unleashed an onslaught of goals on a dazed Virginia Wesleyan defense. Mavromatis started things out with a goal on an assist from Jett one minute in, before Jett found the net on a setup from fresh-man Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) to put the Tigers up 8-5. The

Marlins, showing some resiliency, bounced back with two more quick goals to pull to 8-7 with just under eleven minutes to play, but Hampden-Sydney scored seven consecutive goals to close out the quarter and take the commanding lead. Jett started the spurt with a goal, then Keller scored his second before Hawthorne followed suit on Martin’s second assist to make the score 11-7. Mavromatis, Jett, and Clarke each scored a goal apiece over a three-minute span, before Keller finished the quarter on a goal with 15 seconds left to put the Tigers up 15-7, coming on the first assist of the season for junior Nate Norbo (Waterford, VA/Loudoun Valley). Martin scored a goal five minutes into the final quarter before Virginia Wesleyan’s Nick Northern scored two straight to make the score 16-9. Senior Hunter Phillips (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) got in on the action with a goal coming on a setup from class-mate Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), before junior Dudley Locke (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) closed out the scoring with a strike with two and a half minutes left to make the final score 18-9. In addition to Jett’s points record, Keller’s three goals gives him 45 on the season, which is tied for the sixth most in a season in program history. Hawthorne also grabbed three ground balls, which puts him at the 50 ground ball plateau for the first time in his career. The Tiger defense put forth another excellent effort against the Marlins, with senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlot-tesville, VA/Albemarle) grabbing a team-high five ground balls and causing two turnovers, junior Peter Foley (McLean, VA/Langley) grabbing four ground balls and causing two turnovers, and Norbo adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers. On the day, the Tigers outshot Virginia Wesleyan 45-30, grabbed 43 ground balls to 35 for the Marlins, and had four less turnovers than the visi-tors.

LYNCHBURG, VA-The #19 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker today against #10 Lynchburg College in the ODAC semifinals. After a defensive slugfest in the first half, the Hornets were able to hold the Tigers scoreless during the decisive third quarter. Hampden-Sydney staged a furious late rally but it was not enough, as the Tigers fell 10-7.

Senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) opened the game’s scoring about two minutes into play with an unassisted strike from the right side. Lynchburg was able to respond with a goal six minutes later to even the score at one, and both defenses buckled down and shut out the opposing offenses for the rest of the quarter.

The stellar defensive play continued into the second quarter, with neither side scoring again until Lynchburg broke through with seven minutes left in the quarter. They scored again three minutes later to make the score 3-1, but the Tigers were able to take advantage of an extra man opportunity a minute later when junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) found a cutting Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry), who ripped a shot past the goalie. Only a min-ute and a half later, Hawthorne raced around his defender and buried a strike to knot things up at thee. The Hornets scored with just under a minute left to go up 4-3 and take that lead into the locker room. Hampden-Sydney had an excellent chance to tie things up in the clos-ing seconds, but Jett’s shot hit the post and time expired.

Lynchburg was able to control the action in the third quarter and scored three goals while holding the Tigers scoreless to take a 7-3 lead into the final period of play. Things looked bleak when Lynch-burg scored twice in the first two minutes, but sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) was able to find the net for the Tigers to pull within 9-4. Lynchburg responded with a goal before the never-say-die Tigers really turned up the pressure.

Clarke scored another goal on an assist from sophomore Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River), with seven minutes to go, before sopho-more Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) was able to break through and score one of his own with five and a half minutes remaining to make the score 10-6. Hampden-Sydney was able to use the stellar face-off play of freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) to control the ball for the majority of the quarter, and it paid off again just moments later when Mostowy found Keller who buried another shot to make the score 10-7 with just under four minutes to play.

With the momentum clearly on the side of the Tigers, several opportunities barely missed in the closing minutes, including having one goal disallowed and another that bounced off the post. Hampden-Sydney continued to apply pressure right up until the final whistle, but were not quite able to complete the comeback. Several Tigers had excellent days, including senior captain Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield), whose play between the pipes kept the Tigers in it late. Senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle) caused four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls as well. Mostowy won 12 of 19 face-offs on the day and also grabbed six ground balls to move his season total to 92, which is the third most in a season in Hampden-Sydney history.

With his two goals, Clarke reached the 50-point plateau for the first time in his career, and Keller’s two tallies give him 47 on the season, which is good enough for the fourth most in Hampden-Sydney history. With his first quarter goal, Jett upped his program record for single-season points by a Tiger midfielder to 68, which is also tied for the third most points from any posi-tion. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 13-5 on the year, and tied with the 2002 squad for the most wins in program history.

ODAC Face-Off Club

Virginia Wesleyan College

Entering its 35th year, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including Catholic’s associate status, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country behind the 15-member American Southwest Conference in Texas.

The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to ODAC be-came effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Ran-dolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington & Lee University.

From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members.

The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999.

Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III champion-ships in football, men’s basketball, softball, baseball women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Champion-ships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.

FaCe-oFF ClubA Message from Head Coach Ray Rostan

On behalf of Hampden-Sydney College, I can-not thank each of you enough for your generous support. So many major physical improve-ments have been accomplished in the past few years that I want to openly thank several special donors and their familes. I want to thank Face-Off Committee Chair John Gibson ‘82 for his leadership in both achieving our annual goals as a Club as well as supporting both our Turf field and the growth of our coaching staff.

Special thanks to Everett Hellmuth III ‘75 for his leadership in the construction of the Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Stadium and in the incredible development of the South Wing of the Kirk-Viar Athletic Center. Thanks also to John Pritzlaff, Sr., for his leadership and drive in the development of the Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Stadium. There was great support from many parents, friends and alumni toward the turf field with special contributions from Advisory Board members such as Rob Bonaventura, J.T. Boyce, Dr. Ted Chambers, and Hunter Craig. Special thanks also to the Richard Burroughs, George Dunn, and Peter Worthen families for major contributions to our facilities and to Charles Jones and Peter Summers for contributing an annual aca-demic scholarship to Hampden-Sydney College. Thank you to Dean Cheatham, Brett Bennett, and Rich Wilt ‘88 for recently dressing our locker room.

Our Tigers have now won 4 ODAC Championships and competed in 8 NCAA tournaments. Since 1995 (when our head coaching posi-tion became a single-sport responsibility) our teams have won 70% of all contests. After several productive recruiting years, we feel that we will reestablish our program in the top 5 of NCAA D-III. Most importantly our athletes have been very successful in the classroom and highly productive in their careers!

Thank you again for your contributions to the various “Giving Soci-eties” of our Club. The cost of equipment and travel has doubled in the past 10 years. We hope that you will continue to support Tiger Lacrosse as we diligently work toward achieving our goals; goals that include a national title.
