Letter from thePresident of the Board
Families deserve noth-ing less than a chanceto help their childrenreach their full potential.Yet parents of childrenwith disabilities and spe-cial health care needsstill struggle to findaccurate information, guidance, and the helpthey need to ensuretheir children have theopportunity to thrive.
The needs of families are varied and complex. Our vision is to empower families to meet chal-lenges and build strong communities while help-ing to preserve each family’s connection to theircultural values. We believe strategic parent edu-cation supports family members in their uniquerole as their child's first and most importantteachers. We believe families are best equippedto advocate for the rights of all children to par-ticipate in opportunities for success.
While families, state agencies, providers and ourorganization continue to navigate through a dif-ficult economic period, we are buoyed by theinvaluable support and guidance generatedthrough parent to parent connections. Theresilience and determination demonstrated byfamilies we meet every day continue tostrengthen our commitment to expand outreachand develop new programs for new familieswho need us.
We envision Raising Special Kids as the stewardof a vital lifeline of support for families. Thank youto the dedicated board members, ParentLeaders, staff, sponsors, and community partnerswho have been instrumental in building andmaintaining this lifeline. As we continue to workto empower families, I am reminded of the wis-dom of Margaret Mead: “There is no greaterinsight into the future than recognizing thatwhen we save our children, we save ourselves.”

The Lawyers did not knowwhat to do about their son’sdifficulties at school. Theyknew Chris was smart, buteach day the conflicts weregetting worse and their rela-tionship with the school wasbecoming adversarial.
The worst part was “Chriswas not getting the help heneeded,” explained hismother, Tory. After an evalu-ation revealed that Chriswas struggling withAspergers and ADHD, adoctor referred Tory toRaising Special Kids for helpin getting an appropriateeducation program in placefor her son.
“It was kind of miraculous. When I looked at the web-site, I noticed that theSpecial Day for Special Kidsevent was coming up at therailroad park—and trains areChris’ thing,” said Tory. Whenher family attended theevent, Tory was introducedto a system of supports thathelped her change their life.
“With Raising Special Kids’help I was able to educatemyself. I began to under-stand Chris’ rights, and that itis important to maintain agood relationship with theschool.” She was connectedwith a volunteer through theParent to Parent program. “Itwas so helpful to talk tosomebody who understoodwhere I was coming from.”
Tory learned how to useeffective advocacy tech-niques and was able to workwith the school in develop-ing an individualized learningprogram for Chris. Schoolhas since become a positiveexperience for Chris—and his family.
