Welcome and a Happy New Year to all our students and families. It has been a smooth start to the year with students now in their respective courses and participating in academic, physical and other cultural activities. The teaching staff are particularly pleased with the 2011 HSC results. More than 18 students achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 90 and over. Our dux Ashley Giang attained an ATAR of 97.25 which admits him into Actuary Studies/Applied Finance at Macquarie University. Approximately 150 students have

received offers of university placements. Over 42 Band 6 marks in both Mathematics and the Mathematic Extension Courses was achieved. As well, George Daud’s artwork has been selected for exhibition in Art Express—an honour indeed. Congratulations also to all our Year 12 of 2011 for their individual successes. There have been some staffing changes for 2012. New staff that we have welcomed to Fairvale are: Dianne Picolli Senior Administration Manager (SAM) Gopal Sami Teacher Science Tiffany Barreca Teacher, English Tammy Dunn Teachers Aide, CVTC

Moreover, Years 10, 11 and 12 have had a session of study skills in Week Three. Hopefully the advice, strategies and tips they received will be helpful in their regular study periods. Also, Year 7 had their Orientation to high school with their two days of team building activities—which was well received by all. Over the summer break the following refurbishments took place:

17 new demountables were installed;

Renovation of the Home Economics Seminar Room;

Soundproofing of wall between W1 and the Foley Centre;

The Year 7 outdoor area has had shade sails installed.

Could I please ask parents and guardians to be particularly careful when driving around the school perimeter. Please note that Zarlee Street is a private road and is for staff parking only. Do encourage your children to walk to school if you live in the local area. Walking is good exercise for their health and also eases the traffic congestion around the school area. Students who require transportation to school can be dropped off in the ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone in Thorney Road.

Our next P&C Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, 5th March 2012 at 9.30 am. We encourage all parents to attend and to be involved in your child’s education.

Furthermore, it is important for all students to attend school everyday and be on time. The school day begins at 8.45am, and it is a good practice to aim to arrive at school by 8.30am Parents/Guardians can assist by ensuring that their high school children arrive at school before any of the primary school children in their families.

Please organize family holidays in school holiday periods. Students who take time off in the school term are disadvantaged in terms of their learning and this can result in them not meeting the Board of Studies course requirements. From 2012 the school will not be approving extended holidays for senior studies during the school term. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Lastly, the Annual School Conference will be held on May 4th and 5th in lieu of the Term 4 professional learning days. Thus the school year will finish on December 19th 2012 for staff but final year reports will be issued on 18th December 2012 for students.

Wishing all our families and students a productive learning year.

Regards

Mrs K Seto

This term parents of Year 7 and 8 students will be asked to complete a survey in order to determine if Fairvale High School will continue to be eligible for the Priority Schools Program (PSP) funding. PSP is a NSW Department of Education and Training program designed to support schools servicing high concentrations of low socio-economic families. Fairvale has been a PSP school for many years and has used the funding and additional staffing allocation to support staff in improving the literacy, numeracy and participation outcomes for all students and their families. The decision to nominate for the survey is voluntary. It will, however, determine if we, as a school community, continue to receive additional funding or not. Without this funding, we could not do a lot of the things we currently do to support our students and their families. This survey is very important and it is vital that it is filled out correctly. It is completely anonymous and confidential and no-one in the school will read this information. Your name will not appear anywhere on the form.

Sessions will be held early in 2012 in community languages to explain how to complete the form correctly.

If you have any questions relating to the survey, please feel free to contact Mr P. Rouse, Ms K. Ilse or our

Community Liaison Officers on 9604 3118.

BEST BUDDIES IN THE

MOVIES

In the final weeks of 2011, the Best Buddies team enjoyed a terrific day … filming at Fox Studios – Entertainment Quarters. This “Movie Madness” day was guided by talented NIDA students, who helped the buddies perform their best. The buddies experienced first-hand the art of script writing, directing, camera work and costuming. The day allowed all students to engage in team work, build confidence and most importantly have an enormous amount of fun. New fr iendships were formed, highlighting the positive impact of the ‘Best Buddies’ program. A huge thankyou to all involved. Mrs K. Boukas

All students are encouraged to attend these meetings. SRC meetings give student representatives an opportunity to raise issues that are current to their grade or the school. We also discuss how students and the school community can help our students or others by raising awareness of issues that affect those in our community.

On the Tuesday14th of February, Fairvale High School celebrated Valentines Day, by giving the gift of love. Roses, balloons and chocolates were all on offer to students to purchase, and then given to their friends or secret admirers. For the first time, we also ran a raffle competition with the major prizes to be won. The Valentine’s Day committee started selling products to students and day by day sales were skyrocketing, from the support of the students and teachers with an average of $600 a day, year 12 managed to raise over $4000.

The raffle was drawn on Valentines morning by our one and only Mrs Seto. The following students and staff were winners:

First Prize – Christina DAMIRDJIAN a large teddy bear, two movie tickets, roses, balloons and chocolates.

Second Prize – Sabrin AL SALMAN a small teddy bear, two movie tickets, roses balloons and chocolates.

Third Prize – Ms Davies (Careers) the big love package, which included 2 roses, a balloon and delicious chocolates.

Overall, Valentines Day was a huge success. On behalf on the school and the Valentines Committee I would like to especially thank our Year 12 year advisors Ms Foo and Mrs Zilic for their hard work and effort to try to make Valentines Day a success and for taking their own time off to personally organise all the orders. Thanks for making Valentines day possible.

By Bilal Amin on belhalf of the Valentine’s Day committee.

On Monday 6th February 2012, Year 12 Drama went on an excursion ONSTAGE to the Seymour Centre, Sydney. They were given the opportunity to view Individual and Group Performances from last years HSC cohort from NSW that achieved exemplary results. The performances gave students an insight into the HSC standards as well as p r o v i d i n g t h e m with various new ideas. For those studying Design for their individual project a selection of works were showcased in the Foyer of the Theatre such as cos tumes , se t , pos te r promotional material and more. The students were encouraged to explore these examples and set their goals for their HSC now. The Drama HSC Practical examinations are in week 6 of Term 3, 2012.

Later in the week on Friday 10th February the Dance Students also went on an excursion to the Seymour Centre, Sydney. These students attended CALLBACK and were given the opportunity to view Core Performance, Core Composition and Major Study Dance works from last years HSC cohort from NSW that achieved exemplary results. At the conclusion of the performance the dancers and choreographers were invited back on to the stage to share their "words of wisdom" with the up and coming HSC students. Welcome back!

It’s been a busy start to the year in Careers; we’re excited to continue to assist students to find the pathway that suits them best.

Many students have been enquiring about their Tax File Number (TFN). This number needs to be set up with the Australian Tax Office (ATO), in order for you to work or receive allowances.

You can collect a TFN form from your Careers teacher, or from the Careers Office in the Wright Block. Once completed in black pen only you are to return this form to the Careers room.

Each term is assigned to a specific year group to complete their TFN form. Details are listed below:

Term 1: Year 10

Term 2 & 3: Years 11 & 12

Term 4: Year 9

Support your teen through the high school years with School A to Z. This online resource for parents contains study tips and homework help, information on dealing with exam stress, practical advice on health, wellbeing and cybersafety, plus lots more. Watch

videos, read articles and listen to podcasts at www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au. Also check out subjects your child will be studying and the skills they’ll be developing at:

www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/index/php.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has warned of an Education Tax Refund scam where it is alleged that students from South-Western Sydney high schools were targeted.

Some students were allegedly encouraged to give their tax file number to third parties on the promise that they could claim refunds from the ATO. In this case fraudulent claims were made for the education tax refund.

As parents you are asked to discuss with your children the importance of keeping their Tax File Number secure. A tax file number (TFN) is a unique number given for identification. A TFN should only be given to someone who has a legitimate reason to have it (such as Centrelink or ATO) and should not be shared with friends or with anyone who doesn’t have a right to ask for it.

You need to ensure your child keeps his/her Tax File Number secure and does not make any claims for which they are not entitled to, for example claims for the education tax refund.

If you find out that a claim has been made on your child’s behalf or they have given their TFN details to a third party for the purpose of incorrectly making claims for which they are not entitled, then your child needs to contact the Tax Office to report this and have the situation addressed.
