Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts colleges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Virginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remain-ing men’s colleges. Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best founda-tion not only for a professional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship. As the College’s mission statement says, liberal educa-tion aims to assist students to free themselves from igno-rance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from the tyranny of intellectual selfishness; and from impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refreshment and inspiration in the fine arts.

ONE QUALITY REIGNS SUPREME: LEADERSHIP From the beginning, the College’s intent has been to educate the whole individual “in an atmo-sphere of sound learning.” The College’s history speaks eloquently of the powerful and enduring character of the ideals of self-reliance and service, and of its own two-hundred years of commitment to the value of self-reliant, disciplined intellect in public life. In proportion to its enrollment, Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the top five percent of all colleges and universities in graduates listed in

“Who’s Who in America.” Since 1776, the College has provided the educational ex-perience necessary to produce leaders in every field of endeavor, includ-ing one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congress-men, 12 governors, well over 100 state repre-sentatives, and a host of ministers, attorneys, doctors and judges. The College offers the Bachelor of Arts

sphere of personal integrity, trust, and mutual respect essen-tial to the operation of a dynamic academic community. Re-sponsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and profes-sors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams. Student activities are numerous and diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station and volunteer fire department along with a wide variety of clubs and other organizations. Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hik-ing, and canoeing, or even electronics and short wave radio, students can find campus organizations that cater to their interests. Many student programs involve a strong com-mitment of service to the community, such as the tutoring program for area high school students. The social life of the College is centered around 11 na-tional fraternities and a strong organization of indepen-dents. Concerts, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a student-run college activities committee.

and the Bach-elor of Science degrees, pre-paring students for direct entry into the world of business or for further pro-fessional train-ing in law, medi-cine, business, g o v e r n m e n t , teaching, or the ministry. Basic

to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom hold earned doctorates in their fields and all of whom devote their principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN ACTIVITIES Student life is considered an integral part of the educa-tion process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes. A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues to flourish, upholding the atmo-

The Kirk Athletic Center comprises the completely renovated Gammon Gymnasium and two new wings. It is the home of all field sports - soccer, lacrosse, foot-ball, baseball - as well as cross country, tennis, and golf. The Kirk Center was completed and dedicated in the fall of 2008, and the new additions have provided Hampden-Sydney athletics with some great improvements. Among the additions are four brand new locker rooms for the Tigers, a new training room, a reno-vated basketball court, new offices for coaches and administrators, hall of fame gallery, and classrooms. Now for the first time, each sport has its own locker room, each with direct access to the exterior.

Kirk also houses the athletic training staff, the Gammon Weight Room, the soccer locker room, and the new Hall of Fame. The three person training staff Hampden-Sydney now has a room roughly three times the size of the former training room. The new room comes with many new features including six training tables; four whirl-pools, two of which are full body size; two offices; and a flat screen HD television. This new training room accompanies their auxiliary room in Kirby Fieldhouse.

The Gammon Weight Room is located on the first floor of the Kirk Athletic Center. It is fully stocked with both free weights and weight machines. Some of the weight machines include two Hammer Strength Jammers, two glute/ham machines, a Hammer Strength leg press, a five pulley cable system, a leg extension/leg curl, a chest press, a military press, a bicep curl, a treadmill, and an upright bike. The free weight equipment include lifting platforms, five deluxe multi racks, five flat-to-military benches, three decline-to-military benches, three dip stations, four stabilization discs, three sets of stretch bands, seven plyometric boxes, and 21 medicine balls.

For the first time Hampden-Sydney soccer now has its own locker room. The new room is equip with 41 lockers, new showers, and a state-of-the-art flat screen HD television. Included in the cable subscription is the Fox Soccer Channel. The locker room is located right next to the training room and has direct exterior access.

The new Hall of Fame features new plaques of the 111 inductees along with an interactive touch screen that allows viewers to bring up any inductee on a high definition flat screen by induction type, year, name, or graduation year. The room also features another flat screen television that plays highlight videos from all of the current teams.

In 2007, Hampden-Sydney saw the completion of the Hellmuth-Pritzlaff turf field. The field is the inclement weather home to both the Tiger soccer and lacrosse teams. The auxiliary field gives the Tigers plenty of room to spread out and use both turf and natural grass.

Miller Field, home of the soccer team, received a recent upgrade with new Pro Premier World Competition Goals. The Pro Premier goals are the official goal of the English Premier League and the World Cup.

Through the generous gift from Lewis C. Everett of Kilmarnock, Virginia, Hampden-Sydney College has completed the construc-tion of the $5 million Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Construction on the 1850 seat facility began in November 2006 and was com-pleted in August 2007. The Everett Stadium replaces the 40-year-old Hundley Stadium adjacent to Fulton Field.

The Lewis C. Everett Stadium, designed by Marcellus Wright Cox Architects, P.C., of Richmond, will blend with the Federal architecture of the Hampden-Sydney College campus. It will provide much needed space for press, scorekeepers, and radio announcers and will include restrooms in the concourse area and a filming platform in the cupola. The interior design of the sta-dium lounge is by: Penelope S. Crandall, Interior Design Consultant of Midlothian, Virginia, and, Heidi S. Brooks, Interior Design Consultant of Generations Interior Design, Charlottesville, Virginia

In keeping with its original purpose, Hampden-Sydney seeks “to form good men and good citizens in an atmo-sphere of sound learning.” The College is committed to the development of humane and lettered men and to the belief that a liberal education provides the best foundation not only for a professional career, but for the great intellectu-al and moral challenges of life. In an age of specialization, Hampden-Sydney responds to the call for well-rounded men who are educated in world cultures and can bring to bear on modern life the wisdom of the past. The College seeks to awaken intellectual potential in a search for truth that ex-tends beyond the undergraduate experience. The College encourages each student to develop clarity and objectivity in thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship.

The liberal education offered at Hampden-Sydney pre-pares the student for the fulfillment of freedom. It introduc-es the student to general principles and areas of knowledge which develop minds and characters capable of making en-lightened choices between truth and error, between right and wrong. The mere facts about a subject do not speak for themselves. They must be interpreted against a background of ideas derived from an understanding of the nature of logic, language, and ethics. The individual who is educated in these areas and in the basic disciplines is able to confront any event with true freedom to act, outside the constraints of prejudice and impulse. Thus Hampden-Sydney’s curricu-lum is directed toward the cultivation of a literate, articu-late, and critical mind through the study of the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. It provides both

breadth and depth in learning and encourages indepen-dent programs of study. Believing that education should be a liberating experience emancipating men from ignorance, Hampden-Sydney strives to make men truly free.

THE WALTER M. BORTZ III LIBRARY AND FUQUA INTER-NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS CENTER Opened in the fall of 2007, the Library, named the Wal-ter M. Bortz III Library in 2009, is an integral resource in the education offered by Hampden- Sydney, with a collec-tion that supports the College’s liberal-arts curriculum and a staff ready to assist students and faculty in its use. The ability to use an academic library with confidence is one of the distinctive marks of an educated person. By means of formal and informal instruction in research methods, stu-

dents are encouraged to progress from the heavy reliance on textbooks and assigned readings characteristic of the freshman to the independent work of the graduate scholar. The Walter M. Bortz III Library provides an open and inviting atmosphere for study and learning. The wireless configuration of the building makes it easy for students and faculty to use either laptops or desktops provided on every floor. Group study rooms are available for use and conve-nient carrels and tables provide quiet space for study. Con-taining more than 250,000 volumes, 280 periodicals, and more than 19,000 e-journals, an extensive media collection, and government documents, the collection is arranged in open stacks on the third floor, with bound periodicals lo-cated on the first floor.

The tour begins in Petersburg and ends in Appomattox, where the final surrender was signed. The Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail is a self-guided driving tour that brings together 41 historically significant sites that tell the story of civil rights in education in our country. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park marks the site of the original village of Appomattox Courthouse. Here, Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant negotiated the terms of surrender which led to the end of the war between the states. The majority of the buildings are original to the site and have been maintained just as they were on April 9, 1865. Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is the site of the last major engagement of the Civil War. On April 6, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia lost 7,700 men, including eight generals, in the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. This defeat was key to Lee’s decision to surrender at Appomattox Court House 72 hours later.

gust 22, 2008, and 12 miles were opened June 6, 2009. Upon completion, the park will encompass 33.5 miles of trail for hik-ing, biking and horseback riding. Josh Laux returns in 2011 to the Tiger soccer program for his eighth season. He is just the seventh head coach since soccer became an intercolle-giate sport at Hampden-Syd-ney College in 1969. The 2007 ODAC Coach of the Year and Virginia State Coach of the Year, Laux, together with long-time assistant coach, former player, and fellow Randolph-

Macon alumnus Matt Cooper, has steadily built up the Tiger Soccer program since his arrival in 2004, and is currently the second-winningest soccer coach in program history. Laux returns to the helm after leading his team to an ODAC Championship appearance in 2010. The 2010 team consisted of 15 freshmen and just four seniors. The 2010 Ti-gers battled through a very difficult schedule but got hot in the month of October and rode that momentum straight to the ODAC Championship game. The class of 2011 graduates with the most successful post season record in school his-tory, advancing to the semi finals in 2007, 2008, and 2009, as well as the championship match in 2010. In 2009, Laux’s squad won the most games in school history. The Tigers posted a 16-4 overall record, including a 8-2 ODAC mark. The Tigers set school records for most

wins, most ODAC wins, fewest goals allowed, and shutouts. Hampden-Sydney advanced to the conference semifinals for the third consecutive season, finished second in the ODAC regular season standings, and spent the entire season ranked in the top 10 of NSCAA South Atlantic Region Poll. The 2008 Tigers were again ranked in the top 10 of NSCAA South Atlantic Region Poll. The squad finished 12-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney finished the ODAC regular season in the top four and advanced to the conference semifinals where they were defeated in heartbreaking fashion with just four seconds remaining. In 2007, HSC finished 11-6-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the ODAC. They finished second in the ODAC regular season standings, advanced to the conference semifinals, and was ranked in the top 10 of NSCAA South Atlantic Region Poll. Despite starting as many as seven freshmen, the 2006 Ti-gers finished the year with a 10-6-2 overall record and a 5-3-1 ODAC record. Laux’s 2005 team is arguably the toughest and most determined team to step on a Hampden-Sydney soccer field. After a 3-11-3 season in Laux’s first season as head coach in 2004, the 2005 Tigers bounced back with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 5-4 ODAC record. The team finished the ODAC regular season tied for fourth and was ranked in the top 10 of NSCAA/Adidas South Atlantic Region Poll. Most impressively, the 2005 Tiger Soccer team was rated the 12th most improved team in the nation by the NCAA.

Josh LauxHead Coach • 8th Season • BS Randolph-Macon College, 2001 • MS

Environmental Studies, Va. Commonwealth

Throughout his tenure Laux has coached over 70 Aca-demic All-ODAC selections, 34 All-ODAC selections, 16 All-State selections, six All-Region selections, 1 Academic All-American, 1 Academic All-District 1 ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year, and two Rookie of the Year recipients. He holds a 5-1-1 record against his alma mater and arch rival Randolph-Macon College with the only loss coming in 2004. Laux came to Hampden-Sydney College after four years playing and three years coaching at Randolph-Macon College. Laux served as the assistant coach at R-MC from 2001-2003 and was the interim head coach in the spring of 2004 while then head coach Helmut Werner was on sab-batical. In 2002, Laux’s squad, consisting of seven fresh-men, proved to be one of the Top 10 teams in the South Region and made a run to the ODAC finals. Again in 2003, R-MC was ranked in the Top 10 of the South Region and reached the ODAC semifinals. As interim head coach, Laux’s Yellow Jackets went un-defeated in five games during their spring season against competition which included elite opponents such as ninth-ranked, Division I powerhouse, Virginia Commonwelth University, and the defending ODAC champions, Virginia Wesleyan College. During his tenure as a Randolph-Macon assistant, Laux also completed his master’s degree in envi-ronmental studies at Virginia Commonwealth. Laux is no stranger to the level of play in the ODAC. His playing and coaching knowledge coupled with his coach-ing experience within the ODAC are tremendous assets to the Hampden-Sydney soccer program. A standout player on the R-MC soccer team from 1997 to 2000, Laux is tied for 12th on both Randolph-Macon’s career goals and total points list, and is tied for fourth in career assists. During his playing career at Randolph-Macon, Laux was

named All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference, all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors, and All-South Re-gion, and was tabbed ODAC Rookie of the Year in 1997. As a senior, he received the George P. Compton Award, which is presented to the school’s most outstanding male athlete. Even during his time at R-MC, Laux still possessed ad-miration for the Tiger program. “As a student-athlete at Randolph-Macon and then as a coach, I always had great respect for Hampden-Sydney College’s academics and ath-letics,” said Laux. Laux holds a State Goalkeeper Diploma, a NSCAA high school special topics diploma, and a National Soccer As-sociation of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diplo-ma, which he received with a distinguished pass. He has coached for the Richmond Strikers U-17 Elite teams and the Richmond Strikers U-17 and U-18 Super Y teams. Academically at R-MC, Laux majored in Spanish and international studies with minors in history and religion. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa. Laux graduated high school in 1996 from the Hav-erford School near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he played varsity soccer and led his team to an undefeated season as a senior. He was named all-county, all-area, and all-conference for several seasons, and was his team’s Most Valuable Player while setting the school record for assists during his senior campaign. On the club level, Laux played for FC Delco Soccer Club in southeastern Pennsylvania, and was a team captain from 1994 to 1997. He was also a mem-ber of the Eastern Pennsylvania state select team from 1994 to 1996. Laux is a native of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Tricia are the proud parents of a daughter, Keira Corson Laux, born December 3, 2010.

Matt Cooper returns for his sixth season as assistant coach for the soccer program. A 2006 graduate of Randolph-Macon College, Cooper earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology. Cooper was a four-year starter on the R-MC soccer team and brings valuable on-field experience to the Tigers’ coaching staff. Cooper’s playing career and resume is quite impressive. Cooper was a three-time All-ODAC selection, two-time regional All-American and a two-time Virginia Sports Information Directors’ All-State choice. He was twice selected to the ODAC All-Tournament team. As assistant coach, Cooper has been instrumental in the success of the recruiting process, help-ing to acquire new talent to the roster. The 2010 team made it to the ODAC Championship for the

second time in school history. In 2009, Cooper helped guide the Tigers to a record breaking 16-4 overall record and 7-2 ODAC mark. The 2009 Tigers also set school records for fewest goals allowed and most shutouts. Hampden-Sydney has reached the ODAC semifinals in each of the last four seasons. In his four seasons with the Tigers, H-SC has compiled a 57-31-9 record. Matt and his wife Anne reside in Richmond, VA.

Ricky Talman enters his second year as assistant soccer coach. He also became the Director of Tiger Recreation in August 2009. He takes over the position after working for two years as As-sistant Director in the fitness center, where he headed the intramural sports program. As an assistant, Talman assists with offseason workouts, taking advantage of his ACE certifi-cation as a personal trainer. He also assists with scouting and recruiting. Additionally, he has an E coaching license through VYSA. Prior to joining the Tiger Recreation staff, Ricky was a game day operations intern for the Richmond Kickers. His duties included promotions, ticket sales, and the overall production of games. Ricky graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia University with a BS in Sport Management

and a minor in Communications. While at WVU, Ricky was an active member of the Sport Management Club and was named Vice President his senior year. Along with his club activities, Ricky remained active in intramural sports. Ricky grew up in Chesterfield, VA, where he played on numerous soccer teams around the area. He continues to play in the premier division of the CVSA.

Ricky TalmanAssistant Coach • Second Season • West Virginia University, 2007

Scott Harris is in his second year as Assistant Sports Information Director at Hampden-Sydney for the 2010-11 school year after spending three years (2007-2010) as the Assistant Sports Infor-mation Director at Lynchburg College. As Assistant Sports Information Director, Harris is the pri-mary media and marketing contact and game operations manager for the soccer, lacrosse, cross country, and tennis programs. At H-SC, Harris has helped usher in a new website by PrestoSports and increased the athletic department’s role in social media by adding the H-SC Athletics Facebook and Foursquare pages

while also increasing the use of Twitter. He introduced the first interactive, online media guides for the soccer and lacrosse programs. Additionally, Harris expanded the record books for the soccer and lacrosse teams as well as added archived statistics, rosters, and schedules for the soccer and lacrosse teams. Harris graduated from Lynchburg College in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and earned his mas-ter’s degree in Business Administration in the spring of 2010. As a graduate student, Scott served as the Assistant Sports Information Director and undertook many initiatives, such as adding a Facebook fan page for the athletic department, compiling record books for many sports, and was the Sports Information Publications Coordinator for the 2009-10 school year. Harris was the primary media and marketing contact for several sports, including men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and men’s lacrosse. In his graduate work, he helped develop a strategic plan for non-profit group Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Virginia and also developed a marketing plan for the University of Waterloo’s Chartered Ac-countant graduate program. During his time as an undergrad at Lynchburg, Harris was a manager for the men’s basketball team for three years and a student assistant coach for his senior season. During his senior year, Harris served as film coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team and interned in the sports information office. Harris received numerous recognitions, including: Robert L. Hill Distinguished Senior Award nominee, Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society, Phi Eta Sigma national freshman honor society, and a Leadership Award from the Association of Commuter Students in 2005.

Scott HarrisAssistant Sports Information Director • Second Season • Lynchburg College,

2007 • MBA, Lynchburg College, 2010 Josh Cohick joins the Tigers Athletic Training staff this year after graduating from Lynchburg College in 2011 with a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. Josh will work primarily with the Tiger soccer and baseball teams. During his time at Lynchburg, Cohick worked extensively with the men’s and womern’s soccer teams in the fall and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams in the spring. Additionally, he worked with the Jefferson Forest High School (Forest, VA) football team during its 2008 campaign. Josh is a National Athletic Training Association (NATA) certified athletic trainer and also holds certifica-tions in CPR and First Aid. He was awarded a Crimson and Gray award at Lynchburg College for

participating as a student athletic trainer for all four years. Originally born in Kingsport, TN, Cohick comes to Hampden-Sydney from Lynchburg, VA, and currently resides in Hampden-Sydney, VA.

sional starter was Justin Pugh. With the graduates leaving, Pugh has a strong chance of stepping into the starting lineup on a full-time basis. While the Tigers return several valuable de-fensive players, there are a few major substrac-tions for 2011. Lost to graduation are Matt Hamp-ton, Sam Turner, and John Robert Plyler. Hampton was an All-ODAC player and was one of the top defensive midfielders in the ODAC. While he didn’t contribute much offense in terms of statistics, he was a valuable leader on the of-fensive end. Turner was a stalwart defender for the Tigers and his presence on the backline was one of the major reasons why the Tigers became an elite level defensive team during his tenure. Plyler is a likely future Hampden-Sydney Hall-of-Famer and will go down as one of the best goalkeepers to ever suit up for the Tigers. His name is peppered near the top of every recorded goalkeeper record at Hampden-Sydney. While the Tigers are poised to be as one of the favorites to win the ODAC Championship, the competition on the road to the title will be stiff.

Season Preview The Hampden-Sydney Tigers were tabbed to finish fourth in the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Preseason Poll, as voted on by league head coaches. The Tigers received the second-most first place votes with three. The Tigers are coming off a cinderella season in which they reached the ODAC Championship gameasthe#7seedafterpostinga7-8-2regu-lar season mark. H-SC’s offense has lost little to graduation, returning all but two players to have contributed at least one point on the season end-ing roster. Bryan Wharton is back in the fold for his se-nior year after leading the ODAC in goals (12) and points (28) a season ago en route to being named First-Team All-ODAC and All-State. One of the most prolific scoring forwards in school history, an-other typical Wharton season could see him sitting atop the school record book in career goals and points. Wharton needs 29 points and eight goals to tie Mike Melvin for career points and career goals. To tie Jeff Mencini in second, he will need 15 points and six goals in each respective category. Nick DeProspero, Chris Whiteside, and Cur-ran Blackwell round out the double digit scorers

from last season. DeProspero led the ODAC with nine assists and also tallied 15 points to earn First-Team All-ODAC and All-State. One of the top playmakers in the ODAC since his freshman year, DeProspero has already made a notable splash in the H-SC records. Through two seasons, he has contributed 19 assists to rank 10th in career assists. He needs just five assists to be third all-time and another nine assist season would give him 28, good enough for second all-time and just two assists shy of tying the career record held by JR Hughes. Whiteside had a breakout season as a sophomore, contributing 14 points on six goals and two assists, with three of his goals being game winners. His strong play late in the season helped catalyze the late season push that saw the Tigers go 5-2-2 in the last nine games. Blackwell proved to be a deadly player on corner kicks and set pieces as his height and athleticism enabled him to be a big presence in the box for headers. He posted five goals and one assist on the year for 11 points. While the defense still has several key pieces returning, several key pieces will have to be replaced. While Blackwell is a valuable offensive player, his best work comes on the defensive side of the field where he earned Second-Team All-ODAC in 2010. Gregorio Pacheco will be the lone senior representative on the backline. A captain this season, Pacheco moved from the offensive end of the field to the defense in 2010. His speed and athleticism proved to be extremely helpful as he was learning the position, and it enabled him to eventually become a top notch defender. Jackson Parker started all 20 games as a freshman and improved tremendously throughout the season, culminating in being named to the ODAC All-Tournament team. Another sophomore who showed flashes of potential and was an occas-

2010 Season History

ODAC Goal Club

The 2010 soccer season was a year of ups and downs, but in the end the Tigers lived up to the lofty expectations bestowed upon them in the preseason. H-SC proved to be the Cinderella team in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament, reaching just their second ODAC Title game as the #7seedbeforefallingtoLynchburgCollege. The Tigers were picked to fin-ish first in the ODAC preseason poll, but the Tigers sported a 4-8-1 re-cord through mid October. Despite the rocky start to the year, the Tigers showed a tremendous amount of

heart to close out the regular season with a 3-0-1 record to earn the #7seedgoingintothetournament. Having to face an uphill battle from the beginning of the tourna-ment, the Tigers proved to be up for the challenge. Hampden-Syd-ney concluded the regular season with a double overtime 0-0 draw and faced them again just four days later in the quarterfinals. The rematch proved to be an instant classic as each team battled to a scoreless tie yet again. Needing to determine who advances to the semi-finals, it became anybody’s ball game as the game headed to what always proves to be thrilling in a shootout.

Facing an early 2-0 deficit, the Tigers made their second, third, and fourth pen-alty kick attempts while John Robert Plyler saved the Maroons third and fourth shots. Up 3-2 going into the fifth final attempt for each team, RC’s Brook Allison sent his shot wide left to preserve the Tigers third straight trip to the ODAC Semi-Finals as H-SC secured the first-round upset. The Tigers were next matched up with sixth seeded Washington & Lee, who also upset #3 seed VirginiaWesleyan in the quarterfinals. After going down

1-0 in the 57th minute, Hampden-Sydney quickly responded with a Bryan Wharton goal in the 59th minute and Andrew Berg posted the game-win-ner in the 86th minute. The win sent the Tigers to the ODAC Championship match, just their second ODAC Championship appearance in school history with the first coming in 1994. The ODAC Champi-onship match unfortunately went 5-1 to Lynchburg College, but sophomore Chris Whiteside earned the distinction of being the first H-SC player to record a goal in the ODAC Championship. Six Hampden-Sydney soccer players were named to the All-ODAC team. Two were named first

team, three to the second team, and one honorable mention. Wharton and Nick DeProspero made it on the first team. Wharton posted 12 goals, four assists, and 28 points on the season. The 12 goals and 28 points led the conference while the four assists checks in at ninth. This was Wharton’s third consecutive season with 10+ goals as he had 14 in his first two seasons. DePro-spero continued to impress with his playmaking abilities as he led the ODAC in assists with nine and along with his three goals, he placed seventh in the confer-

ence in points with 15. Earning second team honors was Matt Hamp-ton, Curran Blackwell, and Sam Turner. Hampton, a midfielder, posted a goal and two assists for four points and was also one of the top defen-sive midfielders on the team. Blackwell and Turner anchored the backline that posted a 1.40 goals

against average along with seven shutouts. Blackwell also was third on the team in goals with five and fourth in points with 11. Whiteside was tabbed to the honorable mention squad. Whi-teside scored six times and assisted on two other goals for 14 points. He was first on the team in game-winning goal with three, sec-ond on the team in goals, and third in points. He was third in the ODAC in game winning goals, eighth in goals, and 10th in points.

Also of note is that Plyler finished his career as one of the top goalkeepers in school history. He ranks second in school history in saves with 288 and shutouts with 23. He was just one shutout short of tying the record held by Mike Bizon ‘00, who was an ODAC Player of the Year and First Team All-American.

2010 Season History

ODAC Goal Club

Virginia Wesleyan

Entering its 35th year, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including Catholic’s associate status, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country behind the 15-member American Southwest Conference in Texas. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to ODAC became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington & Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and out-door track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor cham-pionships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was ac-cepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999. Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, baseball women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
