I’m writing to you from the backseat of my jeep as we roll across the plains of Nebraska. We are already on our Midwest recruiting trip. I’m still trying to fi gure out where the month of January went! Our summer staff is our main focus right now. Ben Larson has joined me for the whole trip this year. I ask for your prayers as we travel. I also ask for your prayers for the whole selection process. We are anticipating a strong group of returning staff from last summer that will make a great foundation for this summer. This will be a great ministry team. And summer is just around the corner! As we started this year, we said good-bye to one of our assistant directors, Katy Stypula. Katy got married in January and moved to Kansas City to be with her husband who is in Physical Therapy School there. Katy brought a great passion for this ministry and a true love of our Bridging Borders program. Katy, thanks for all the additions you brought to our ministry in a very short time. Know we will miss you! Don’t be strangers!. The land exchange is going to become front and center for all of us this coming year. This past year, we were almost part of a land exchange during the spring where we would have had to provide almost $150,000 in 2010 and another $485,000 during 2011. We realized that this would be a large amount to raise in a very short time. Our Board also realized that it is now critical that we raise the money ahead of time and bank it so we are prepared when the next potential land exchange opportunity comes along. We will need gifts of every size to make this happen. If you would like to make a major gift to this dream, I’d love to have that conversation! Aside from the dream of owning our own land, we continue to need your ongoing support for this ministry through prayer, through your sweat, and through your fi nancial gifts. As we plan for 2011, Synod has had to reduce their support to us by $16,000 from what we received last year. We need to fi nd this support from other places. I hope that you will be able to help us. In tough economic times, it is sometimes easier to not respond out of fear rather than respond out of faith. We have all been richly blessed beyond measure. Know how much your gifts are appreciated and how important they are in allowing us to do our ministry. I know that we are all still experiencing this tough economy. But we are here to help. If fi nd yourself in a position where fi nances will prevent you from sending your child to camp, please contact me—we’ll fi nd a way to get your child to camp! Our campership needs will again be great this year. We are anticipating giving out over $10,000 for camperships this year. We have an exciting year planned for you. We have more Rainbow Trail hosted retreats than we’ve ever had. We are implementing several new trainings next fall that will enhance the ministries of your congregation. Our summer “week-by-week” camper counts are right on track with last year. Weeks are closing quickly. As we move forward in 2011, I hope that you take the chance to experience Rainbow Trail again this year. Look at all the opportunities that are offered to help you and your family grow in your faith ALL YEAR LONG!

Trail Boss By Dave Jarvis - Executive Director

I hope we will see you this spring and again this summer. Come be a part of this place! We all love having the opportunity to serve you! By the time you read this, our daughter Leah will have left for Brisbane, Australia for her spring semester abroad. We are so excited for the possibilities that this adventure will hold for her. She is staying with a woman from the Lutheran church in Southport so she will get to experience some of the day-to-day life of being in Australia. Being the good parents that we are, Nell and I are going to spend two weeks with her down under making sure she is safe and doing ok. As I watch our kids become grown adults, I am so grateful for the infl uence of the summer staff that have helped shape our kids. I love the faith conversations I get to have with both of our children. That has been one of the greatest fringe benefi ts of serving in this place. May Rainbow Trail continue to be a place that helps shape the faith lives of youth and their families. Let’s talk about owning this site when you come to camp this summer! Until next time…

Don’t Miss The

Men’s Fly Fishing RetreatApril 7-10, 2011

Take some time to step out of the stresses of ordinary life and into the refreshing waters of the Arkansas River. This weekend of fly fishing, hanging out with the guys, and amazing worship and conversation is led by Pastor Dave Risendal. His deep love of fl y fi shing and the gospel will help you re-center and deepen your faith. Expand your fly fishing skills with instruction from Greg Felt, owner of Ark Anglers Fly Shop. Learn fl y tying and gain vlueable tips from other seasoned fi shermen. Whether you are an experienced angler or just want try fl y fi shing, this is a weekend you won’t want to miss! The $195 program fee includes meals and lodging. Don’t have gear? No problem, we can connect you with rental equipment at a great price. To get more information, contact Ben, 719-431-0050 or [email protected].

Greetings from Hillside! It’s mid January and I’m writing this edition of Fresh Ehr on my laptop while getting a tan on the Columbine deck. While I’ve heard others around the state either complaining about too much shoveling or raving about great ski conditions, we’re sitting here mostly bone dry. I’ve had to use the snowplow only twice so far, and both times were mostly just for fun because the sixty degree temps would have taken care of the job just fi ne. If at any point this winter, any of you (in Colorado or otherwise) get tired of the snow, we’ll gladly accept it here by the truckload. Load it up and bring it on down! On the plus side, the mountain biking has been great all winter…and I ran up to Balman Reservoir in tennis shoes last week! Keep deep spring snow in your prayers for us. Lots of snow means a safe wildfi re-free summer full of great ministry! While I haven’t been as busy shoveling and plowing this winter as I would have expected, I’ve certainly been keeping busy otherwise. For those of you who have been able to visit camp this winter, you might have met the two new Camp puppies! They do a great job of keeping me occupied. Jangles, our six-month-old chocolate lab has been picking up fetch like a champ from Roxie. And Berkeley, our nine-week-old Bernese mountain dog is still tiny enough to make the little snow we have look deep. She won’t be tiny for too long. They are both very excited to play with you this summer! The pace of our retreat season has been a treat. The slow weekdays have given me a chance to chip away at my mile-long to-do lists while the retreat weekends come with conversation, laughter, some familiar faces, and lots of fun new ones. Living here year around, it can be easy to forget how special of a place we have here. The groups that come up make that fact hard to forget! One of my big tasks this winter has been to start getting a handle on the squeaks and leaks of a more than half-century-old site. With some re-plumbing in Holling Lodge and a small rework of the furnace, we’ve managed to cut our January heating bill for the building by 85% compared to last year. It has been kind of fun as well to run some calculations regarding all of the compact fl uorescent light bulb donations that you guys helped us out with this past summer . As standard bulbs have burnt out, we’ve slowly started to switch out to CFLs. With some crude math and a basic online calculator, I’m putting our annual electricity bill savings due to bulbs replaced so far at almost $1200 per year. That correlates to over 6 tons of reduced carbon emissions. Keep the bulbs coming and soon we can double or triple those numbers! There are a lot of light bulbs on site! With our Christian calling to be better stewards of our precious planet, it has been powerful for me to see that with even a few small steps, we can bring this place more in line with that important goal. Thanks for your help! Remarkably, summer is starting its steady roll around again. Days are lengthening and summer-prep to-do lists are getting longer. I’m busy thinking towards the Memorial Day work weekend, scheming up lots of great projects. We have a couple of groups coming up this spring for work retreats which will give us a great head start on getting this place ready for one more summer. It is always exciting around here and with almost an entire year under my belt in this role, I’m getting anxious to see what unfolds in the coming amazing months. Whether for the great retreats coming this spring or into this summer, I’m excited to see you all soon!

Women’s RetreatMarch 24-27, 2011

Women, this is a weekend just for you! A wonderful time of relaxation, inspiration, challenge, and retreat. Michelle Okes, mother of three and longtime friend of Rainbow Trail will bring a unique and inspirng perspective on life, family and faith. She will lead scripture-based study to help us build

more intimacy with God and teach us ways we can share our faith with the people around us at home.

The weekend is fi lled with great worship, Bible study, food, social time in the evenings, and a mix of activities during the afternoon. Choose to participate in what you want or spend time on your own taking a nap, reading a book, or exploring God’s creation. Whatever you need, we will do our best to help you fi nd it here at Rainbow Trail!

Simply put, few things matter more! Rainbow Trail is the place where my adult faith was seeded and nurtured. It is the “rubber hitting the road” for many people’s faith. The neat and orderly Jesus of Sunday School stories becomes a partner in real life adventure; mountains are climbed, fears are conquered, the call to discipleship is lived. In my times at camp, I have shared conversation and tears with friends about God’s work in our lives. I spent other times dancing in the rain, praying at sunrise, wearing goofy costumes, learning not to take

myself so seriously, making life long friends and drinking coffee from a red mug while marveling at the beauty of God’s creation. At camp, Christ is obvious and present in daily activities. It becomes clear that God’s grace invades our lives more than we know. As a result of these experiences, my faith has matured from a simple set of beliefs to the roots upon which the rest of life is built. When I give a gift to Rainbow Trail my hope is that the ministry continues, that seeds are planted and roots are nurtured for others.

Having grown up in the midwest I know that February isn’t exactly the best time to plan a visit, especially if it’s part of a long road trip. Today I’m riding across the frozen fl atlands of Nebraska as I’m writing. The thermometer in the car is up to two degrees and I’m missing summer sunshine on the mountain tops a lot! But it’s worth it, Dave and I are on the annual staff recruiting tour. This year we’ve packed ten days at eight schools into this two week adventure. It’s both exhausting and very exciting to begin shaping the staff of another summer. The summer staffi ng process is one of the really fun things I get to do in this job. We meet some incredible people and have lots of wonderful conversation, about how camp (Rainbow Trail and lots of others) has shaped them, and about how they feel called to help shape the campers and staff that will be part of their lives this summer. Reading applications and references late into the night can be tiring but I know that time and energy poured into the process now will be more than worth it when the staff arrive at camp in May. I’m looking at the process with new eyes, literally (well almost), this year. I had lasik surgery last month. It’s really quite amazing what a few seconds of concentrated light can do. Sitting up after they moved the laser away I could see the clock on the other side of the room, I can’t remember the last time I could do that. Comparing it to stories of the blind being given sight might be exaggerating a little, but even after a couple of weeks I still get excited when I reach to take off the glasses I’ve worn since second grade and realize that they aren’t there anymore. I can’t wait until the fi rst time I get to wake up in the middle of the night and fi nd the stars shining brightly in my face! This year has started off quickly and is looking like it will be fi lled with lots of wonderful things. Beth and I are looking forward to the baptism of my newest nephew Logan, and a trip back to Chicago to be part of that. Beth is excited about a role she has in our local community theatre. There are several new and exciting programs happening at camp, and the summer Compass Points schedule is almost completely full. Hopefully you’ll get to be part of the great things happening at Rainbow Trail this year and will join us at camp soon.

A Pre-Camp Scavenger HuntThe Fun Way Our Kids Gave Back

By Scott Skrine - Board Member

This past summer, 2010, my wife and I had three kids enrolled at Rainbow Trail. Prior to driving to camp and dropping them off, we talked about giving something to Rainbow Trail on their behalf. When we viewed the camp’s Needs & Wish Lists, (see page 8) the boys who were 11, 8, and 8 decided they wanted to give RTLC a “gift box” of stuff from the list. So we packed up the troops and headed to a local offi ce supply store. We started with one of the Rubbermaid containers from the list as our box and gave each boy an amount he could purchase to “fi ll” the box. As the boys traveled around the store, they would look at what the others had selected and maybe return something to get another. At times, they returned to the box and saw how big their item was (how much room they took up in the box), they would look at the list, grab the last item and race off again. This turned out to be a fun outing and a great way to provide some needs and wants for Rainbow Trail. Upon our arrival at camp, we had the boys present the gift box to Nellie at the check in table. We

saw Dave on our return to collect the boys, he stated that the items just kept coming out of that box once they got to it. Our kids were very pleased with their selections and the good it would bring to Rainbow Trail. It’s just a small example of how the kids can give back to a place that is so special to them. An offi ce supply store scavenger hunt may not work for your family,

but I’m sure you can fi nd other creative ways that your family can give back to the amazing ministry that happens at Rainbow Trail. These kinds of gifts really help stretch the dollars the camp has to provide this ministry. And, your gifts will impact EVERY camper that comes to this place. All gifts are really appreciated and yours will be too!

PEAK: Children, Family, and Faith (continued from p.1)Led by Dr Nate Frambach and Dr Kristine Stache, Professors from Wartburg Seminary, the course will take an indepth look at how the church views faith and faith development in children and how we can take on a more holistic view of passing on the faith to future generations. Children, Family, and Faith is one of several events hosted by Rainbow Trail that offers professional and volunteers in our churches the opporuntiy to grow in there own

faith, knowledge, and skill for working with the people in their congregations. A day long look into the Bible, led by Jeremy Myers, Professor at Augsburg College and a Youth Directors Retreat in March and a Volunteer Youth Leader Training in October are also scheduled for the coming year. Please share these opportunities with leaders in your congregation. Information and online registration available at www.rainbowtrail.org/special-events.

Rainbow Trail is blessed to have a great cloud of witnesses that give their time and talent to the ministries that happen. The staff at Rainbow Trail work very hard to offer quality programs, food, and facilities, but it would never happen without the amazing support and dedication of all these volunteers. We’ve made every effort to include all those who have volunteered in 2010; if we inadvertantly left you off the list, please forgive us and call the camp office at 719-276-5233 so we can make a correction. Thank you for your amazing service to Rainbow Trail!

Their most important function, however, is helping to get information about camp out to the masses!
