Nonprofit Innovation

rick wartzman, Drucker institute executive Director:

“ [Direct Relief’s] fundamental insight—to take the best in private-sector technology and

uniquely adapt it for the social sector—has greatly strengthened a weak link in the

medical supply chain…its efforts demonstrate that social-sector organizations can achieve

the very highest levels of efficiency.”drucker press release:

“ The award recognizes, in particular, Direct Relief’s aggressive adaptation of information

technology to better meet its mission. Direct Relief has built a commercial-grade iT system

that has enabled a more precise, more targeted, more efficient and more expansive flow

of donated medical goods to nonprofit healthcare facilities in more than 70 countries and

across the United states.” drucker press release:

“ in 2010, Direct Relief used its strengthened iT system—the result of what it calls

“market research on the noncommercial market”—to better manage the distribution

of $258 million in medical aid to healthcare providers in the U.s. and around the world.

Healthcare providers, in turn, have been able to take advantage of Direct Relief’s state-of-

the-art saP software to reduce their own administrative burden, make more informed

product requests and increase their ability to focus on patient care.”

1 The country’s largest nonprofit program providing

free prescription medicines—$250 million worth

since 2004.

2 The only nonprofit licensed to distribute

medications in all 50 states.

3 1,000 clinic partners nationwide, representing

20 million patients.

4 Partnering with CVS to provide $6 million in free flu shots.

5 Preparing communities for emergencies—

hurricane preparedness along the gulf Coast

and equipping medical reservists in California.

efficiencies

“ Efficiency and accuracy are not just goals in Direct Relief’s work, they are expectations.”

“ Public service isn’t the sole purview of public servants anymore.”

“ First you have to care, then you have to think, then you have to act.”

“ the problem with emergencies: urgency to act + incomplete info = waste. Information flow should drive work flow. Better information, better managed means more people get help.”

“ the efficiency argument is just as strong – if not stronger – for a nonprofit providing humanitarian services as it is for a commercial business serving its customers, particularly in tough economic times when more people need help and fewer dollars exist to provide help.”

Games for ChaNgE(Real) Life Saving Aid

Millions of people around the world are playing games online for fun; but in an instant, Zynga and Direct Relief turned gaming into good by transforming online connections into real life aid.

helPing PRePaRe fOR The neXT eMeRgenCYZynga’s most recent campaign for Direct Relief—through the game Empires and allies—offered players the opportunity to buy virtual protection, the proceeds from which supported Direct Relief’s global Preparedness Program to prepare vulnerable communities around the world for everyday emergencies. Zynga is broadening philanthropic opportunity online. With over 230 million gamers using Zynga games through facebook on a monthly basis, the potential for reaching more people with the help they need is amplified.

Zynga develops games, like FarmVille, that are available through social networking websites, such as Facebook. By offering gamers the option to purchase virtual goods to gain an edge in game-play—the proceeds from which to be channeled into charitable donations—virtual buys become life-saving assistance from groups like Direct Relief.

Dr. Hillary Mabeya, an obstetrician gynecologist and fistula surgeon with eight years of experience in obstetric fistula repair, operates in the Gynocare Fistula Treatment Center in Eldoret, Kenya. The center opened in June 2011 and has already treated 45 patients.

5 things to knowabout fistula

1 What it is. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged and obstructed labor without prompt medical intervention.

2 Why it matters. The woman is left with chronic incontinence and, in most cases, a stillborn baby.

3 Who it’s affecting. Even though obstetric fistula is both preventable and treatable, an estimated two million women in developing countries

are living with fistula and an additional 50,000 to 100,000 new cases develop each year. Most sufferers are young women, many in their teens.

4 What can be done. The health of women with fistula can be restored if they have access to surgical treatment. Success rates for fistula repair surgery can be as high as 90 percent for skilled surgeons.

5 the big picture.

Many women with fistula live with the condition for many years before receiving treatment, and the ability to leave the hospital

completely healed and dry after years of incontinence has a profound impact on women’s health and well-being, lifting families and

communities.

Recognizing a Commitment to health and hope

In September, Direct Relief recognized Covidien with the Restoring Health and Hope of Women

Worldwide Award. For the past several years, Covidien has been a generous supporter of Direct Relief’s Obstetric Fistula Repair program, providing both financial support and product donations to equip health facilities providing fistula repair in sub-Saharan Africa.

2 million mothers worldwide are suffering from a devastating condition that almost no one knows about. The condition is obstetric fistula, and it is entirely preventable and treatable.

Direct Relief is spearheading

work with global leaders in

fistula repair and prevention –

the United nations Population

fund’s Campaign to end

fistula, The fistula foundation,

Women and health alliance

(Waha) international, and

engenderhealth – to improve

awareness, coordination, and the

allocation of medical resources

that will be key in the effort to

eradicate this condition.

the geography of fistulaWho needs help and how to get it to them

Knowing where to aim medical

resources is as important as

having them. a mapping tool

developed by Direct Relief

will help visualize which

organizations are involved in

fistula treatment, where these

organizations are located, and

where gaps in service may exist.

the global fistula map will

also help Direct Relief, and other

groups working to end fistula,

better match fistula repair

supplies with the healthcare

providers who need them to best

care for their patients.
