The School of Social Work is in the business
of seeking solutions to the most intractable
social issues of our day. u We do this by
modeling what a great research university
can and must do to serve society. We bring
keen analysis and evidence to address
complex problems. We partner strategically.
We foster powerful programs. We recruit and educate the best and the
brightest to service and leadership. u Every day, we demonstrate that
a great social work school can possess scientific stature, strength and
flexibility. u In the Pacific Northwest, collaboration comes naturally.
We live and work in a culture where community engagement, risk-taking
and innovation are the norm. When we add hands-on research, high ideals
and hard work — social work becomes social change.

A HISToRy oF LEADERSHIpas the first decade of this century comes to a
close, the School of Social Work has expanded
student scholarships, added several endowed
professorships, and introduced award-winning
partnerships with regional, national and
international organizations. It’s part of a long
tradition of nurturing decisive leaders who
find highly effective, science-based solutions
to critical social problems. u Since 1934,
when founded, the School has been deeply
connected to the historical events of our
time. We responded to economic upheaval in
the 1930s with skilled welfare workers and
administrators, then mobilized for war in the
1940s with a focus on medical social work.
In the 1950s, we expanded our academic
reach with doctoral and undergraduate
programs. and in the 1960s, once again,
we responded to rapid social change with
groundbreaking student and community
outreach programs. u The School’s academic
direction shifted dramatically in the 1970s to
evidence-based social work practice and use-
inspired research. This triggered two decades
of rigorous scholarship, breakthrough findings
and increased recognition for a diverse faculty
focused on culturally competent social work
practice. u Today, the School is ranked
among the top graduate schools of social
work in the nation and continues to redefine
what’s possible in tackling the toughest social
issues of our day.
