WHAt oUR GRAdUAtES SAy“Studying by distance education was perfect for me as I was really happy living in the bush in the Blue Mountains. I had agood job there with National Parks as well as a great circle of friends. Studying at CSU by distance education allowed all theseparts of my life to continue uninterrupted, while expanding my mind and horizons at the same time.

“I took seven years to complete my Bachelor degree, which included the breaks that I wanted for travel and to study atthe pace that I could manage while balancing everything else. I found CSU was totally across all the things that distanceeducation students may need to complete their study successfully.

“Residential schools were a little break from home life and the best thing was that everyone was in the same boat, comingfrom places all around Australia and keen to socialise and share experiences of distance education. Residential schools werea great opportunity to network and meet like-minded people — the other students and CSU staff — people who love the

Australian bush and are committed to conservation.”

StUdEnt tEStImonIAl“Having left school many years ago, I didn’t think I would ever achieve a tertiaryeducation, but with CSU, nothing is impossible!

“Taking advantage of CSU’s exible approach, I started with two distanceeducation subjects I thought I would enjoy, and that I could build on if I decided togo on to a Bachelor degree. At the time, I was working full-time in a family business, had ve young children, and my husband was also studying! I wasn’t sure how Iwould manage essay writing, reading time and time for my family and work, butI was organised, determined and focused – and I got used to late nights. In fact, those quiet ‘witching hours’ were some of my most productive times.

“My lecturers were very supportive; keeping me keen, discussing outcomes, subject options and encouraging me to attend classes and tutorials, even as adistance education student, and the STUDY LINK subject on academic writing wasgreat in getting me started.

“Although it took many years of commitment, I have since completed my Bachelor of Arts with Distinction - a rewarding and inspiring start to the future, thanks to CSU.”

lEVElS oF StUdyU ergra ua eUndergraduate study is a student’s entry level at university. While mostundergraduate study is at Bachelor degree level, students may also complete or exit with a University Certi cate or Associate Degree from some courses.

U iversi Cer i ca eA local award of Charles Sturt University, equivalent to eight standard subjects andusually completed in one year of full-time study (or equivalent).

Ass cia e degreeA broad-based undergraduate degree that is usually completed in two yearsof full-time study (or equivalent). An Associate Degree is often articulated with aBachelor degree, and students gain credit in the Bachelor degree for all subjectsstudied.

bache r egreeA Bachelor degree is awarded to a student who has completed studies in anundergraduate course, usually after three or four years of full-time study. ManyBachelor degrees also incorporate a year of Honours study, offering a pass or

Honours stream. A student can enhance their career opportunities by completinga double degree, which integrates studies in two complementary areas resulting inthe award of two Bachelor degrees, usually after four years of study.

F r re i f r a i visi : www.csu.e u.au/s u /u ergra ua e

H ursHonours is an additional year of study where a student will produce a specialistwork of research. Honours may be integrated within an undergraduate course, usually from the third year of study, or may be a separate year of study that canbe enrolled in after completion of the Bachelor degree. Honours can enhance astudent’s career prospects, and is often a pathway to further postgraduate study.

F r re i f r a i visi : www.csu.e u.au/s u /h urs

Gra ua e a P s gra ua eGraduate and postgraduate study is normally undertaken after a Bachelor degreehas been successfully completed. This may be immediately on conclusion ofthe undergraduate degree, or after a period in the workforce, and sometimespractical work experience is a requirement of entry.

Through study at these levels, students have the opportunity to build their knowledge in a speci c area through a program of study involving coursework and/or research, resulting in the completion of a dissertation or thesis for Master or doctoral awards.

CSU graduate degrees include Graduate Certi cate and Graduate Diplomaand usually require no previous study in the chosen discipline area. Postgraduatedegree levels include Postgraduate Certi cate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master or Doctorate (PhD). For postgraduate awards, students are required to haveprevious study or experience in the same discipline area as the award, so that thepostgraduate course builds on that earlier study or knowledge.

Higher degree by coursework: If you’re studying a Master degree, you cancombine coursework or independent study (at least one-third of your program)with a dissertation.

Higher degree by research: If you’re studying a Master degree or PhD, you canspend two-thirds or more of your time on a thesis based on your own original andsigni cant research.

“It was far more challenging thanI anticipated, but the lecturer

provided all the support I needed.I enjoyed interacting with other

students through the online forum, and their thoughts frequently

challenged mine. The lecturer also provided the right balance

between his input into the courseand allowing students time to

learn in their own way.

“I am very busy with family life, andwork life is de nitely not 9 to 5 as Iam a Salvation Army Of cer. The

online forum and having completeonline access to CSU’s facilitiesmeant I could complete study

when it suited me.

“This course de nitely helpeddevelop my Christian faith. As a

minister of religion, it is important tocontinue to challenge my mind toensure I do not become stagnantin my beliefs. This course provided

me with skills to look at my faith, theworld in which I live, and to minister

to people every day with a broader understanding of theology and itsplace in the church and society.”
