Hunt in the SnowWaterfowlLocated in the midst of the Pacific Flyway, Klamath County is a bird hunter’s paradise where it’s common for millions of ducks, geese and swans to migrate through every year. Our many wetlands, grasslands, and refuges provide ample habitat for these birds.

Winter Sports

11

Hunting season typically runs from early October through late January for ducks and geese.

Big Game Your big game pursuits may take you after blacktail deer in the densely wooded areas of the Cascade Mountain Range, or in search of mule deer in the high desert sagebrush with juniper and pine trees all around. Rocky Mountain Elk are also found in good numbers in Klamath County.

Controlled hunt tags are limited, so apply early. There are no limits for general season tags.

Southern Oregon has more black bears than any other of the lower 48 states. Steep terrain, dense cover and overly abundant food sources provide excellent Black Bear habitat! Take note though - hunting bears with dogs is prohibited. The Keno Unit, western portion of Sprague Unit, and Gearhart Mountain are good places to hunt.

Page 12: 2011 Daytripper

s Other popular species include cougar, turkey, coyotes, bobcats and antelope. For turkey hunting, the Keno Unit is open to public access and some BLM land is available for hunting. Check south of Hwy 66 and west of the Klamath River Canyon to Copco Road.

For complete hunting information visit www.dfw.state.or.us.

TennisLoosen up your limbs with an indoor tennis match. Day passes to gyms like Harbor Isles Tennis and Fitness are available and you can also register for competitive play. Never

played? Group tennis lessons are a great way to connect with family and friends. What’s more fun than learning a new sport together!

Visit www.harbortennisandfitness.com for more information.

Steen Sports ParkKlamath Falls is home to a full scale, pristine sports park that offers a variety of indoor sports offered through leagues or on a drop-in basis. At Mike’s Fieldhouse, a 60,000 square foot indoor arena, play activities like indoor Frisbee, football, soccer or even walking. Check out www.klamathsports.com for a schedule of events and drop-in times.

Winter Wings Festival 2011When: February 18th – 20thWhere: Oregon Institute of Technology

The Klamath Basin is a paradise for bird watchers. Its unique geography provides habitats that are ideal for a broad range of birds. Marshes, lakes, meadows, cliffs, forestland, and juniper make Klamath a key stopover on the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds.

It’s no wonder the Winter Wings Festival has become such a popular annual event. The

Klamath Basin Audubon Society hosts three

days of workshops, keynote speakers, field

trips and mini sessions devoted to the area’s

diverse bird populations.

Pre-registration is required for many of the

activities. Visit www.winterwingsfest.org or

register onsite at OIT the day-of.

Bald Eagle WatchingBird lovers from all over the world flock to

the basin to see bald eagles. In fact, Klamath

hosts the largest concentration of wintering

bald eagles in the lower 48 states.

January and February mark the prime viewing opportunities. As many as 500 of these raptors inhabit the area, hunting in easy-to-spot groups of up to 50 birds.

Visit a National Wildlife Refuge for winter bird watching or take a drive along the Tule Lake or Lower Klamath auto tour routes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides more information on these auto tour routes and wildlife refuges on their website www.fws.gov/klamathbasinrefuges.

The Rock and Gem ShowThe 25th annual rock and gem show will be held at the Klamath County Fairgrounds March 12th – 13th. Wander through gem exhibits, take part in a rock hunt for kids and bid on an exciting selection of silent auction items.

Irish days in LakeviewThere’s no better time for a party than Saint Patrick’s Day. Celebrate Irish Days in Lakeview for a full week of activities and fun. A large population of Irish emigrants settled Lake County and the whole town pays tribute to their heritage with events like a barbeque, corn beef dinners, a parade and many other exciting events. The parade is scheduled for March 12th.

Restaurant RoundupA lot of us in the Klamath area think we’ve dined at most of the local restaurants. But have we really? This winter might be the perfect time to expand your culinary horizons and check out the many great local restaurants in the area.

Hop on the Indoor Golf SimulatorDon’t let weather scare you away. Golf is just as agonizing and thrilling indoors as it is outdoors. Dial in your swing with

18 holes on a golf simulator that uses laser technology to predict the flight of your ball and project it onto a screen in front of you. Use your own set of clubs from a driver to a putter to play a full round in the comfort of a warm pro shop. Just as fun for beginners as for experienced golfers. Call Harbor Links Golf Course (541-882-0609) to set up a tee time.

Play BingoClear your throat and get ready to yell BINGO! It’s a game anyone can enjoy and an easy way to meet others in the community. For mind-stimulating and reflex-challenging fun, join your friends for bingo.

Outdoor playtime for the KidsSometimes the simplest ideas are the

best. Take the kids outside for some

classic seasonal entertainment. There’s

plenty to do this time of year. Build a

snow fort, have a snowball fight, make

snow angles, create an obstacle course,

have a ‘who can build the biggest

snowball’ contest, play hide and go seek.

The list is as long as your imagination

will allow. Bring out your inner child

and get creative!

Jumpin’ JaxCut the kids loose in a giant room full of bounce houses. Parents can read a book or sink into a comfy couch. Call 541-891-1364 for hours or to reserve Jumpin’ Jax for large groups or parties.

and vegetables. Mix food coloring in a spray bottle to add color. Your imagination is the limit when it comes to snowman art.

StoryTime!Let the library take a turn reading. The Klamath County Library offers multiple story time sessions, all with a different focus. Bundle up the kids in pajamas for a bedtime story meant to sooth and calm the kids before bed. Or pack some food and drop in for a captivating lunchtime tale.

Board Game BonanzaOld fashioned board games are easily

forgotten in the digital age of Wiis, iPads,

e-readers and HDTVs. Reconnect with a

more interactive kind of fun. How about

declaring a weekly board-game-night

tradition?

Build an Indoor FortDads, surrender to the nostalgia of youth.

Construct a fantastic fort with blankets,

pillows and living room furniture. Make sure

you and the kids clean it up before mom

gets home. And no power tools. They’re not

necessary here.

Attend a Kids Workshop at The Home DepotThe Home Depot offers workshops for

parents and kids age 5-12. The young

participants receive a Home Depot associate’s

apron and an achievement pin. These hands-

on classes are held on the first Saturday

of every month and include projects like

building a birdhouse or a picture frame. Visit

www.homeimproverclub.com/workshops

for times and activities.

SleddingTubing and sledding are fun activities that younger and older members of the family can enjoy. Who doesn’t enjoy sliding down a snow packed hill on a sled whizzing by the shrubs and trees that are embellished in that frost-kissed robe of sparkling white? These fun times spent sledding will create lasting memories. So grab the kids, hop in the car, and head to one of the many great sledding hills where you can soak up the sunand burn some energy. Your kids will thank you for it!
