ORIGINIn 1906, a group of industrialists concerned about quality, certification and research in the wool textile sector decided to found a supporting association for competitiveness of companies named Acondicionamiento Tarrasense. Those industrialists knew how to anticipate needs for business collective solutions and laid the foundations of the current concept of technology centre.

Over the years and thanks to the work performed, the entity evolved both to the extension of its activities and to the name that is currently identified with the brand known as Leitat Technological Center.

During these years, our vocation in offering services to companies and entities has remained unchanged, whereas the activities developed, the organization and our internal work system have changed significantly specializing in different knowledge areas allowing the search for the best technology solutions for companies.

The results obtained lately show that the bet developed by Leitat towards knowledge generation and transfer to the productive fabric is an effective model for economic growth in a fast, efficient and sustainable way, creating at the same time new areas and models for talent development and personal performance for all employees.

PRESENT DAYSToday, nobody would doubt that industrial innovation, especially if it is based on technology, improves the level of competitiveness of companies and their potential to successfully explore new markets. Unfortunately, the economical and social environment does not simplify planning and performance of projects on industrial innovation.

Leitat, aware of these difficulties, renews its principle commitment to support business I+D+i by focusing on the promotion of specialized teams on Technology Transfer. This will allow the creation of business collaboration by which a new science-based economy might be developed.

This corporate report is an annual summary of activities carried out in 2009, achievements, hard work, dedication and commitment of those who are part of Leitat Technological Center, making an effort to assisting customers and overcoming technological challenges, being always faithful to our values of promoting innovation, integrity, responsibility, sustainability and independence.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and, once again, offer you my help.

Sr. Eusebi CimaPresident

The aim of the LightMotorcyle project, which is lead by GAS GAS MOTOR and involves other well-known companies such as Nifco, ESTEL and TR-composites, is to lighten motorcycles, and LEITAT, as a part of this project, investigates on and develops light hybrid composites based on metals, polymers and carbon fibre, as well as on concept solutions, simulations and processes using these new materials and microelectronic in order to obtain versatile technologies for the weight reduction of vehicles. The know-how obtained in this project contributes to research on new and light composites that have to be not only resistant but also competitive. It also contributes to new processes of transformation, beyond autoclave, for the aerospace sector and the construction and automobile sector in noteworthy projects such as the CENIT Target project of AIRBUS or SEAT´s nAUTO2.

Light materials for transport

In 2010, LEITAT started the ambitious SUPERCAP project with the aim of obtaining new technology for super- capacitors for the retention of electric energy. The final aim is to be able to produce, on industrial basis, devices with an attractive price-performance ratio. This project, lead by LIFASA (INTERNATIONAL CAPACITORS), involves a long chain of well- known companies such POLISILK, CONCENTROL for the development of new materials based on nanotechnology, FICOSA and Sunco for the introduction of the new super- capacitors in the automation sector and the renewable energy sector. In this project, LEITAT provides solutions for new generation electrodes, design and marketing of the devices and their application as well as maintenance or complementation of the batteries. At the same time, Leitat also applies its knowledge in nano materials in the photovoltaic sector and in thermoelectricity to companies such as SIEMENS, the THALES group or SPERIAN, in order to effectively and on a large scale design an o-PELTIER cell. We accompany all our customers in every application connected to nanotechnology until its marketing by providing support during the development of the product and by advising our customers on health and the environmental risks of the products.

Nanomaterials as a way to an improved energy efficiency

In 2010, LEITAT provided global support for companies operating in many different sectors such as the medical sector or the broad consumer sector as well as in the fields of nutrition, furniture, furnishing and domestic electricity. Our collaboration has been extended to the field of illumination by collaborating with PHILIPS or VIBIA, providing our assistance in the conception and development of new sources of light, devices for lamps and new materials for lampshades. LEITAT has further collaborated in research and development of new products for the medical and hospital sector, which offer such interesting tasks as the control of drugs and clinical equipment, the assistance and nursing of the elderly or persons with reduced mobility, automatic medicament preparation for people with a chronic disease without mistakes in dosage or the creation of new equipment to facilitate diagnoses or clinical analyses.LEITAT has worked together with companies such as HENKEL, AC MARCA, KH Lloreda or CEPSA QUIMICA and COGNIS in order to design new ingredients for detergents that are more effective and ecological. LEITAT has helped to develop new expediencies and new materials which increase the quality as well as reduce the environmental effects in the fields of decoration, furniture armchairs and chairs for public use by working together with FIGUERAS or GRASSOLER and many other companies.LEITAT further started various initiatives in the field of nutrition and food packaging in order to increase the capacity of Spanish companies to respond to these markets technologically. This project is lead by LEITAT and financed by the European Commission in the frame of its environmental project LIFE+, which intends to establish an innovative and environmentally sustainable technology in order to improve the recycling of motor vehicles on an European level by achieving a situation in which what is now considered to be waste generates by-products which can be used in different subsequent processes. The aim of this improved waste separation is the recycling of materials and their energetic evaluation as an alternative source of energy. In Europe, 14 million cars end up on junkyards every year. Different directives of the EU are being examined in order to improve the handling of the waste the automotive industry produces, considering the aspects of recycling, reuse, and evaluation of it. The consumption of natural resources and the contamination of the environment due to improper waste disposal require drastic changes and new ideas such as those developed in this project.

Food poisoning bears a great risk for the health of all people. Most infections are caused by the consumption of food contaminated with pathogens. In our world today, food control is a very important necessity. The aim of the MICROSEGA project is to improve the security of our food by incorporating microscopic capsules which contain antimicrobial agents against the most common pathogens in food. This strategy enables a free control of the antimicrobial agent and extends the shelf life of the food. The technology of using micro and nano encapsulation offers a very broad field of application, for example in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, textile, detergent and chemical industry.

TECHNOLOGICAL AND COMPETITIVE VALUE TO OUR CUSTOMERS

FICOSAJosep Mª Tarragó – Executive Vice-president

From our experience, we consider Leitat to be one of the Technological Centres that are participating most in the different fields of work concerning I+D+i. In our long-term partnership Leitat has accompanied our project teams during the phases of characterisation, validation and testing, it has taken the responsibility for the projects due to their complexity which required a very special knowledge and it also participated in the projects by supporting us with their many talented persons. We have worked together in 4 different projects, some of them were international, in which Leitat supported the investigation and promoted the synergy between companies in order to develop I+D+I projects. It generated knowledge and experience in order to offer new systems or products to the market. Further, at the moment we are working on a way to enhance small technology businesses or “spin offs” that are supported by Leitat or in which they even take part in. Centres such as Leitat play a key function in the development of our I+D policy and are a fundamental piece for the success of our company.

CEPSA QUÍMICA Ignacio David López – Research Manager

Leitat offers us capacity and flexibility in order to give a fast answer to the demands of our clients, knowledge in many different sectors and experience in developing new applications for the technology industry. For us Leitat represents an important partner for our aim to have information about, improve and develop applications and new qualities of our products. For Cepsa Química, a company with many different tasks in the petrol-chemical sector, it is very important to have a technological partner at your side that can help you to identify potential solutions to technological challenges the market poses.

Centro Técnico SEAT Dr. Ing. Víctor Oliveras Mérida - Innovation strategy and patent manager

LEITAT, as a member of the Catalan Technological Centers, is one of the catalysators of the reinforcement of the I+D+i net in Catalonia, and for our experience with complex projects it is a collaborator that we value and respect very much for its capacity. The employees of Leitat, with which we had the chance to work with, always proved a great collaborative talent, a proactive attitude and a great technical knowledge concerning the topics that we treated. Our experience in I+D+i projects with Leitat, which is still at its beginning but has so far contained a perfect entrepreneurial aim and has always been in accordance with the scientific possibilities, has so far added a great interconnecting value to the project. The technological centres are an unavoidable measure for improving the realization of investigation in the first place and to find partner such as Leitat enables us to obtain technological results that add an element of difference to our competitiveness.

LA SEDA Carlos Olmo - Assistant Manager

One of the fundamental pillars of our success in I+D+i was the collaboration during the last years with the Technological Center of Leitat. They made it able for us to balance the mediums in our projects, to optimize our infrastructure and employees, diversify opportunities of business and concentrate our effort on specific aims. Its flexibility, capacity of adaption to our projects and quickness in providing solutions added a great advantage to our competitiveness. The profound knowledge of Leitat and its broad net of contacts is fundamental for our aim to open to new markets for PET and recycled PET. The development of this new polymer, which is called PETAUTO, made it able for La Seda de Barcelona to have access to this new market in which the high recyclability of the products and sustainability are the axis to the future. This collaboration also made it possible for us to find new formulas that opened the way for us to introduce and improve our products with competitiveness in other sectors such as for example construction, the cosmetic industry or detergents. We hope that we will be able to work closely together in the future and extend our collaboration in order to find innovative solutions and competitiveness that will enable us to withstand the most challenging tasks the market will impose on us.

HENKEL Ramon Bacardit – Senior Vice-president

Our company incorporates suppliers, clients, machine manufacturers, universities and institutes in its system in order to manage innovation. “Open Innovation” is present in almost all of our I+D+I projects which makes it possible for us to positively use the knowledge that exists outside of our company in order to shorten the duration of the projects and enhance the possibility of their success. In this context, Henkel invests about 10% of its budget for I+D+I projects in external partners, especially universities and institutes and this figure will be steadily growing in the future.Leitat forms an important part of this network of external centers that all contribute to the success of our company. The level of knowledge and professionalism that Leitat offers has made it possible for them to become a valued partner for us in our process of innovation. Its capacity to offer fast solutions and flexibility are highly appreciated aspects and very important in order to speed up any investigation project. Because of all this we could not be luckier to have such a professional partner as Leitat at our side. The professionalism of its employees makes it possible, day after day, that this important technology center gains a foothold on an international level.

HP Ramón Pastor - Research and Development Global Director

At the same time as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the beginning of HP´s activities concerning innovation in Catalonia in 2010, we started an initiative to promote the national talent of young and excellent engineers and scientific university graduates and to create jobs with a high value for the country by offering training programs and innovation. We are very proud to say, that without the help of Leitat it would not have been possible for us to launch this initiative last year when 25 recently graduated young scientists started their work in our investigation and development laboratory. It would also not have been possible to start a second edition of this project this year where we hope to incorporate 25 young scientists more. The great innovative spirit and the professionalism of Leitat have helped us to stabilize this program. We consider them to be a good partner for students and the administration but also for companies who want to add a higher value to their work.
