We all admire high performance. Tonight, we celebrate it.
President’s Welcome
Dear Friends,
How wonderful that you are able to participate with us as, together, we celebrate giving.Sometimes we give material possessions, sometimes we give our time, but always we givefrom our hearts.
Tonight we celebrate Susan Low Sauer, a woman who epitomized “giving,” as the recipientof the Rabbi Martin Freedman Humanitarian Award. Susan passed away two weeks ago onMay 5th. She was 75 years old. She was too young to leave us. But Susan had 75 years thatshe used fully. These years were used to help individuals, groups, and organizations moveforward. Susan was a leader who touched many lives. Her “giving” had a ripple effectsuch that we will never know all those who benefitted and will continue to benefit from hergenerosity. Tonight we struggle with our feelings. We are sad about the loss of our goodfriend and yet we celebrate Susan’s life - a life lived completely and in service to others.When I think of Susan I think of her laugh, her warm smile, her clear and direct approach,and her endless Mah Jongg games, which brought together a group of women (includingDebbie, my wife) who will now be friends forever.
We also celebrate three organizations that help bring us to a new level of “love your neighbor.”Our neighbors may live on a different street; our neighbors may live in a different town; our neighborsmay live in a different country – but we are neighbors none-the-less. We have a responsibilityto help our neighbors. Not to do for them, but to help them move closer to their goals.
• In our community - Barnert Temple Education and Outreach Programs: helping to reach young and not-so-young through study, worship, and acts of loving kindness.
• In a different town - City Green: promoting social justice and environmental equality by facilitating the establishment of urban farms and gardens in northern New Jersey’s cities.
• In a different country - Global Grassroots: empowering vulnerable women in Rwanda to realize their dreams and help their communities through safe access to safe water.
Thank you to all those who worked long and hard as members of the Celebration of Givingcommittee. Tomorrow you rest. Well, maybe not tomorrow but next week.
And a hearty thank you to all of you - for joining together to celebrate giving.
With gratitude,Rick GreenbergPresidentBarnert Temple Board of Trustees.
Chairpersons’ Welcome“Opening Doors: Individuals. Community. The World.”
These words express the vision and mission of the Barnert Temple. In our day to day work they translate into extraordinary practice, particularly in the area of social action, where Barnert opens the door to tikun olam, repair of the world.
Monies raised by “Celebration of Giving” will support Temple Education and Outreach programs, GlobalGrassroots, an organization that supports conscious social change, driven by and for vulnerable women at thegrassroots level, and City Green, Inc., who facilitates the establishment of urban farms and gardens, andteaches sustainable gardening in the inner cities of northern New Jersey.
We are also celebrating the life of of Susan Low Sauer, and honoring her with the Rabbi Martin Freedman Humanitarian Award to recognize her leadership, dedication, charitable work, and LOVE of the Barnert Templefor almost 50 years.
We would like to thank our event hosts for helping to underwrite part of this evening. Entertainment: Williamand Anne Cohen and Gail White; Cocktail Reception: Robert and Ellen Gutenstein; Ad Journal: William andCatherine Krame; Flowers: Melissa Eydenberg, Eric Aretsky, and Alan and Barbara Peller.

Susan Low Sauer
We are privilegedto honor Susan LowSauer with the RabbiMartin FreedmanHumanitarianAward for her life-time of service toBarnert Temple aswell as the commu-nity at large. In herthoughtful words,considered actions
and generous gifts, Susan epitomized thelove, passion and spirit of Rabbi Freedmanand the vision of our unique synagogue fornearly 50 years.
Many became part of Barnert because ofSusan’s warm welcome and contagioussmile. Many Temple leaders heard and werepersuaded by Susan’s heartfelt opinionsabout Barnert activity. And many weretouched and helped by Susan’s compassionand caring support.
Susan credited her husband, Alvin, as well asRabbi Martin Freedman, for helping her becomecomfortable with her Judaism. In a 2009 speechshe gave at a Sisterhood luncheon about theJewish influences in her life, Susan wrote: “Itwas Alvin who introduced me to Barnert Temple,and more importantly, to Rabbi Martin Freedman,”she recalled. “Martin was a man of 5’8” on agood day, but appeared to be six and-a-halffeet tall from the pews — his voice boomingstraight to the rafters as if God Himself wasspeaking. He made you sit up straight and
pay attention. You wanted to pay attention.So all of a sudden, the girl who had no interestin her own Judaism was sitting up straight,was paying attention…For the first time inmy life, I was proud to be Jewish!”
Pride led to action. Susan was instrumental inmany Barnert milestones. Notably, she servedas Temple President (1982-1987) during thecongregation’s move from Paterson toFranklin Lakes; as Sisterhood President(2000-2003); and as co-founder of the BarnertTemple Preschool. In addition, her work forthe American Red Cross, Brown University,Wyckoff Public Schools, Wyckoff Partners inPride, and many other charitable organizationsserves as an example for us all.
Susan and Alvin were married in 1962 andraised four loving children; Richard, Elizabeth,Stephanie and Jennifer, and have five beautifulgrandchildren. During her tenure at BarnertTemple, she established the Nana Cele GardenFund, a seedling which has grown into amuch greater and ambitious garden projectat the Temple — yet another way the Barnertcommunity continues to participate in TikunOlam – Repair of the World.
Indeed, through living Jewishly, Susan alwaysfound new ways to express her generosityand care for people and the world aroundher. We are thankful for the gift of Susan andher decades of selfless giving to her family,her friends and our community. L’dor V’dor— from generation to generation. The gooddeeds she did for so many of us live on.

Our work is guided by the core value that deep-ening personal consciousness and contributingtowards the common good are both essential toestablishing a mindful society that will advancethe greatest level of positive social change. Wecall this “Conscious Social Change.”
We also believe one of the most effectivelevers of social change is a woman who has thecapability, resources, power, courage and innercommitment to initiate positive change for her-self and others.
Global Grassroots’ Conscious Change Academyhelps vulnerable women reclaim their lives andrediscover their value to society through the development of their own ideas for socialchange. We catalyze and accelerate the processof personal and societal transformation throughfour primary strategies:
Delivering a holistic, interactive and educationalprogram to support the self-actualization ofconscious change agents. The training portion ofthe Academy integrates (a) healing and personalgrowth work, (b) tools for deepening consciousnessand ethical leadership, and (c) the social ventureskills necessary to implement a sustainable socialventure;
Providing project development support, seedgrants and ongoing high-engagement consultingto launch the sustainable solutions designed byour graduates to address priority issues facingwomen;
Building a global network of conscious socialchange agents and the support structuresnecessary to accelerate their work and spreadbest practices;
Investing in creative communications mechanismsto raise awareness of critical issues facingwomen worldwide, especially trauma and sexualand gender-based violence during conflict.
Our goal is to catalyze at the grassroots levelworldwide the development of consciouscommunities of change agents working independently, collectively and systemically toadvance women’s rights and well-being.

Martin Freedman: Renaissance Rabbi Excerpted from a memoir by Shirley Shacknai Freedman
Martin Freedman’s service to the Barnert Temple, the oldest Temple in New Jersey, began in 1957,when the congregation was still located in downtown Paterson. With enormous energy, new ideas, vision, creativity and more than a little chutzpah, he spearheaded a period of dramatic growth in the Templewhich led the congregation to build a new Temple in Paterson in the 1960’s.
With the increasing movement of congregants to Bergen County, RabbiFreedman foresaw the need for the Temple to move on; in 1987 he oversawthe construction of Barnert Temple’s current home in Franklin Lakes.
The shidduch (match) between Rabbi Martin Freedman and the BarnertTemple was a match made in heaven. He found joy and fulfillment in hiswork, his service to congregation, community – Jewish and secular, Israeland the world. The Temple was his pulpit from which he could and didgive vibrant voice to the importance of living Jewishly, of pursuing justicefor all people, of taking action to improve the lives of our sisters and brothers in America, in Israel, in all parts of the world.
Our Renaissance Rabbi was indeed a terrific talker, but his actions, his activism, spoke even louder thanhis wonderful words. He enlarged the rabbinic role of teaching and preaching and embraced broad social, educational and humanitarian causes.
Deeply dedicated to improving the quality of people’s lives, education was of primary importance to him.Appointed by five New Jersey governors, Rabbi Freedman held several key positions in higher education.He was immensely proud of being an integral part of the New Jersey Board of Higher Education for muchof its history, but he was equally proud of his role in establishing the preschool program at Barnert Temple.
A champion of human and civil rights for all people everywhere, he was the recipient of numerous awards,among which is a special commendation by the NAACP for organizing the First Interracial, InterreligiousClergy Freedom Ride. In 1974 he travelled to the Soviet Union to secretly make contact with Jewish Refusniks. Notwithstanding close encounters with the KGB, he did manage to hide and carry out in hisluggage important writings and communications of Refusniks.
Closer to home was his involvement for over fifty years with the Jewish Family and Children’s Service of North Jersey. The Board of Directors wrote of his service: “Rabbi Freedman’s erudition, wit, passionand action for social justice and Tikun Olam (Repair of the Universe) was inspirational and legendary. He touched and improved people’s lives. The Agency is a finer institution because of his wisdom and devotion throughout five decades. He made a difference.”
Rabbi Freedman’s love for Israel began in early childhood; his devotion to and strong support for the State ofIsrael continued throughout his lifetime. He often said he could not bear the thought of a world without Israel.
In life, Martin was a beautiful blessing. Now the memory of that loving heart, marvelous mind, commandingpresence and powerful force for good will ever be a blessing in our lives.
