A MESSAGE from our Superintendent and School Board President It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. It is one of the most exciting years in the history of Perry Local Schools, with the addition of a freshman wing at the high school, renovation to other sections of the high school, energy-efficient upgrades to our other buildings, and the reconfiguration of our grade-level structure in all buildings. The environ-ment and opportunities for students are both better as a result of these physical improve-ments. Given all the change across our school district, our core work remains the same – we still have a broad goal of graduating 100% of our students, and strive for them to be college, career, or military ready upon graduation. The manner in which we work towards accomplishing these goals is through establishing positive rela-

tionships with our students and families, maintaining high expectations in all areas of the school district (especially in our classrooms), and by providing students with meaningful and engaging lessons and activities. While we are far from perfect, these are the areas which we continue to focus on behalf of our students, and we work towards fulfilling our district’s mission on a daily basis, while operating in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner. It is with a great deal of gratitude that I begin my seventh year as superintendent of Perry Local Schools. Our community continues to work together, making Perry Local Schools one of the finest districts in the state of Ohio. Our students continue to score high academically, experience success after they graduate, and are active-ly involved in our community. Perry’s teachers work hard to ensure that effective learning takes place that ulti-mately prepares students for successful lives. Special thanks to our board members for their leadership, and thanks to our entire community in continually making Perry Local Schools an organization of excellence. Have a great year! As always, thank you for your interest in our schools and in our children! Sincerely, John Richard John V. Richard Michael Brenner Superintendent School Board President

SENIOR MOMENTS from Bette Mizer It is time to welcome back students, teachers and administrators to the 2011-12 school year. HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE SUMMER DAYS and had an opportunity to spend quality time with your family and friends. The Perry Community is fortunate to be blessed with an exceptional school system. The Sen-ior Citizens are proud of our Perry Local Schools with their history of Academic and Athletic achievement. August, the month of celebration, joining hearts and generations! Starting each morning with an attitude of gratitude, no matter what the circumstances, can splash joy over the rest of the day. BINGO: The Perry Senior Citizens are invited to Edison Middle School on Tuesday, September 13th for bin-go games, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served during the evening. Please send in your reser-vation. The 162nd Annual Stark County Fair will begin on Tuesday, August 30th and run through September 5, 2011. This is a Stark County tradition. Make plans to be in attendance. DID YOU KNOW? President William Howard Taft (Ohio) was the first president to throw out a baseball to begin a ball game. It happened in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. During the game he happened to stand up to stretch during the seventh inning, and that tradition is how the seventh inning stretch had its start……….. LOVE IS CONTAGIOUS, START AN EPIDEMIC ! ! ! ! On August 27, 2011 Stark Parks will host the first Annual Wellness Day at the Magnolia Mills, 261 North Main Street, Magnolia. The event will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at noon. The day will be fun-filled and educational. Friends of Stark Parks will be hosting their 11th annual golf outing on Friday, September 9th at the Sanctuary Golf Course in North Canton. If anyone is interested, please register by calling: 330-477-3552. The August birthstone is the Camelian and the flower is the Poppy. The Ohio Military Museum is located at 316 Lincolnway East, Massillon. Uniforms, Medals of Honor and other memorabilia from Ohio Military Men and Women are on display. The Museum is open year round, Wednesdays through Saturdays with free admission. You are welcome to call for information at: 330-832-5553. Speaking of cookies, the first Ceramic Cookie Jar was created in 1929 by the Brush Pottery of Zanesville, OH. The essential jar was embossed with the word “COOKIES.” Friendship is the treasure we hold very dear, Joy is the gift we share through the year. With Perry Pride, Bette

PHS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: SCHOOL WILL BE OPEN ON TIME We will have student occupancy for the first day of school Au-gust 22nd! The new renovated freshmen wing (Phase 1A) is complete and looking beautiful! All of the renovated classrooms (Science) and additional Art rooms along with the guidance offic-es (Phase 1B) will be ready for opening day as well. We are ex-pecting our new link corridor and kitchen/cafeteria areas to be functional (approximately 90% complete) and operating for open-ing day as well. This project is the largest our district has taken on since building Pfeiffer Middle School in the 1970’s. It is still under budget and will be tremendous resource for our students for many years to come. As a reminder, all construction was completed with per-manent improvement funds saved over the past 6-8 years—there were NO NEW TAXES for this entire project. Other facility updates throughout the district: -A new stairway and handicap ramp at the front entrance of PHS. -New tennis courts at the high school. -The entry way at Edison has been renovated and provides better security. -A new handicap accessible lavatory at Pfeiffer has been completed. -A new playground for students at Pfeiffer is in place. -A new bus loop for Edison and Pfeiffer students has been de-signed, increasing safety..

REEDURBAN UPDATE:

We will open bids from contractors for the removal of asbestos and building demolition in late August. A public auction of materials and equipment is scheduled for Sept. 17. The removal of asbestos will occur dur-ing the last two weeks of September, with demolition to begin approximately October 1.

PERRY LOSES TWO WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS

Perry Local lost two wonderful ladies this past summer that had given so much to our Perry Local Schools. Sandi Mercorelli (pictured left), a veteran bus driver of 36 years, passed away in July. Also passing in early July was Nellie Phelps (pictured right). Nellie worked for 32 years in our food service department. Both ladies remained active in the Perry Schools as volunteers and substitutes. We will miss them both dearly.

WHIPPLE ELEMENTARY

(perrylocal.org/whipple)

NEW LOOKS AT WHIPPLE

When the students return to school this fall at Whipple they will notice various changes that oc-curred at the school over their summer break. The first thing they will be sure to notice is the bright, white new front hallway floor which was recently installed replacing the fifty-nine year old dark brown tile. The new floor proudly displays the Per-ry block “P” inside the front door. Another change the students will notice is that many of the fixtures in the restrooms have been replaced. These changes even include “touch free” faucets on the sinks. The lighting throughout the building has also been im-proved with new fixtures being added in many plac-es. Last but not least, they will be able to enjoy a new “outdoor classroom”. Through the generosity of the Whipple Heights PTO, four new in-ground picnic tables are being installed at Whipple. Three of these tables are being arranged to create an “outdoor classroom” for the students and their teacher to use. What a great way for the students to observe outdoor sci-ence “first hand”. Welcome back to school and re-member to check out Whipple’s “new looks”.

WATSON UNITE READY FOR A NEW YEAR Watson UNITE (Unite Now In Today’s Education) is the school’s parent and teacher organization and they are off and ready to welcome the new school year with a new leadership team. President Brock Ryan is lead-ing an outstanding board which includes: Angie Miller as Vice-President, Jen Waters as secretary, Lori Campsey as treasurer, Lisa Yelichek as scholarship chairperson, and Sharen Lindberg as nominating chair-person. They are referring to up-coming school events as our “RE-UNITE” as they are committed to bringing together our Watson Fami-lies with our new families from Reedurban as well as other schools. They will kick off the year with an in-formal open house just for the new grade 1-4 families on Thursday August 11th. The formal open house for everyone is scheduled just before school starts on the following Thursday, August 18th. UNITE’s mission is to bring the home and school into closer relation and promote the interests of the children of Watson School through educational and social pro-grams. The UNITE Board is looking forward to a very active school year that includes activities just for the students such as the COSI on Wheels Assembly, and those activities for the whole family such as the annual Glow Night slated for Saturday October 8th from 5-7:30PM. UNITE also raises funds to provide an annual scholar-ship to a graduating Perry Senior and would like to recognize former Watson student, and 2011 PHS grad-uate, Savannah Fox, as their UNITE Seth Brown Jun-ior Scholarship winner. Savannah’s essay included many fond memories of those events supported by UNITE and how her early years prepared and shaped her for high school and beyond. Watson families are encouraged to get involved and join UNITE. The first meeting will take place in the Watson Library on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 6:30PM.

Seven parents have graciously volunteered for a role in our successful parent-teacher organization. A special thanks goes to these ladies for their motivation, enthusiasm and willing-ness to serve our students. The PTO Board for the 2011-2012 school year is as follows: Presidents: Lisa White and Rhonda Gliba, Vice-Presidents: Anne Bowers and Jennifer Yuhasz, Secretaries: Kim Ailing and Gina Jones, Treasurer: Elizabeth Craig. Planning for many special events and functions are well underway. In order to make this the most suc-cessful year for Lohr PTO, please plan on being a part of the team by attending monthly meetings and volunteering for events such as the Princess Ball, Boys Night Out and Classroom holiday parties. REEDURBAN REMEMBRANCE A BIG thank you goes to all community members and alumni that have supported Reedurban Elementary over the past 80 years. The success of the Reedurban Community Open House and sales of wooden replicas and photographs are proof that Reedurban was a memorable place to learn and teach. The funds that were raised from these sales were placed in a Reedur-ban Scholarship Fund to continue assisting Reedurban students in life-long learning. If you purchased a Cat’s Meow replica or photograph at the Community Open House and have not received these items, please contact Mrs. Clements at Lohr Elementary, 330-484-3924. Preparations for the razing of Reedurban are well un-derway. A public auction is scheduled for Sept 17th to sell unneeded educational materials, furniture and supplies by the district. All are welcome. Thanks again for all your support.

PFEIFFER INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL (perrylocal.org/pfeiffer) Since 1975 Pfeiffer has been the home for the dis-trict’s 6th and 7th grade students. Beginning in the fall, Pfeiffer will be the home to approximately 800, 5th and 6th graders. The transition from a Middle school to an Intermediate school is exciting. The grade levels have changed but the concept for the school is the same. Pfeiffer believes that successful schools for young adolescents are characterized by a culture that includes: • Educators who value working with this age

group and are prepared to do so. • A collaborative team and leadership. • A shared vision that guides decisions and in-

struction. • An inviting, supportive and safe environment. • High expectations for every member of the

learning community. • Students and teachers engaged in active learning. • Adult advocates for students. • School and community partnerships. Students will still receive the same curriculum offer-ings but will now be placed into two-teacher teams instead of four-teacher teams. The teams will house 50-55 students allowing for a smaller more intimate learning environment. The building will now run on a block schedule in-stead of a period schedule. A block schedule allows for more flexibility for teams, provides double the time allotted for mathematics, and reduces the amount of disruptions to learning, by reducing movement and eliminating bells. The staff at Pfeiffer is committed to providing a rig-orous, quality education maintaining the “Excellent Rating” Pfeiffer has received from the State of Ohio for 8 years.

EDISON MIDDLE SCHOOL (perrylocal.org/edison)

THE PLACE TO BE!

We are excited to be starting our first year in what promises to be a long legacy of success for the new Edison Middle School. The Edison team has been working hard to be ready to open our doors to the first class of students in our new middle school. Mrs. Diane Kittelberger, formerly Genoa princi-pal, will be the new principal of Edison Middle School. Mr. Tony Carr, former Pfeiffer teach-er, will be the new assistant principal at Edi-son. Mrs. Kittelberger and Mr. Carr are honored to have the privilege of serving the Edison students, staff and parents. Edison will hold an Open House for all students on Thursday, August 18th from 5:00-6:00 for 7th graders and 6:00-7:00 for 8th grad-ers. During Edison's Open House, students will vis-it their homerooms, receive their class schedules and then visit each of their classes to meet their new teachers. It is our hope that this special evening will help put them at ease as they approach the first day of school. Also, please be sure to visit Edison's website at http://perrylocal.org/edison/ for a list of general supplies to get students started. We are

looking forward to a wonderful year!

PERRY HIGH SCHOOL (perrylocal.org/phs) PHS TO OFFER ARMY JR ROTC

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program is the #1 source for producing our nation's military offic-ers. A "Junior" version of this program (JROTC) has been developed for our nation's high schools. It pro-vides students an outstanding opportunity to learn about and demonstrate leadership, character, motivation, dedi-cation, and a host of other skills that will prove incredi-bly useful in their lives. Perry HS has been accepted by the US Army to implement its very own JROTC pro-gram starting this fall! We are incredibly excited about the opportunity. Please know this is not a recruiting tool for the military. In fact, there is little difference nation-wide in terms of the number of kids that enter the mili-tary from JROTC versus the normal high school student population. It is designed to give our students the chance to model core values, build leadership skills, and take part in experiences they would not get any other way. If your child is interested, please have them see their guidance counselor at PHS!

GO PANTHERS!

PERRY HIGH SCHOOL (perrylocal.org/phs)

THE EXCELLENCE CONTINUES For most Perry students the school year ends in late May. However, there are some that continue their edu-cation well into the month of June. This past June, many Perry students took advantage of summer school through Perry’s Digital Academy (www.perrylocal.org/pda). Some students recovered credits in courses while others used the time to get ahead of pace in their high school education. Perry students had a success rate of 96.6% in credits earned for summer school 2011. With over eighty course credits awarded, many of these Perry students will be on track to graduate. Summer school highlights also included eight students receiving their high school diploma upon completion of the program. The Perry school community is grateful to the efforts of summer school instructors Nancy Wells, Steve Grossi, Mike Dolfi, and Chris Meiser in helping facilitate the success of these students. A note of gratitude is also in order to counselors Mary Jo Bowersox, Ron Wilson, Mary Jane Fahrney, An-drew McGee, Wendy Fragasse, Chantil Frederick, and Rose Mickley for their support in registering students for the needed coursework. The Perry High School administration along with secre-tary, Barb Zink, deserves special recognition for their support role in summer school as well. The excellent success in student performance for sum-mer school 2011 continues to reflect the pride, excel-lence, and tradition that is Perry Local Schools.

PHS SUCCESS TEAM Perry High School has established its first PHS Success Team to provide support to the incoming freshman and sophomore students as they enter our new and improved Perry High School on August 22nd! Thank you to the 62 junior and senior volun-teers that have agreed to help in this endeavor! The goal in establishing this team was to utilize the “ones that know best” about the daily happenings in the halls of PHS! This team will outline for our new students the “ins” and “outs” of Perry life, as well as inform them about all of the extra curricu-lar opportunities available to them during their time at Perry. Furthermore, the students on this team will stress to our underclassmen the im-portance of setting high academic standards for themselves, as well as reinforcing how important it is to take advantage of all the opportunities availa-ble to them during their high school years. Students participating in this program were recom-mended by staff members at the high school and received training this summer in order to offer sup-port to their 9th and 10th grade peers as they embark on their high school careers! The PHS Success team will serve as guides to stu-dents during the upcoming Freshman/Sophomore Open House on Thursday, August 18, 2011. They will also “meet and greet” new students on the first day of school, and will be in all freshman and sophomore homerooms to assist.

PERRY LOCAL CHOOSES AlertNow FOR RAPID NOTIFICATION

In today’s digital landscape, school administrators are increasingly under pressure to enhance school safety and security, increase parental involvement, improve stu-dent achievement and build community engagement. With AlertNow, educational administrators and leaders can send out voice calls, email messages or SMS messages to students, parents and staff. Establishing a relia-ble channel for communicating helps schools and districts share information effec-tively and efficiently. In time-sensitive situations, parents and guardians can receive information and details directly from the school. Not just for emergencies, AlertNow is beneficial in sending out routine school mes-sages, such as attendance reports, low lunch balance alerts and event and meeting reminders. Perry Local Schools will be implementing AlertNow and all its features during the upcoming school year. Once you have your students Emergency Medical Form we are asking each parent to ensure they provide an accurate phone number and email address we can use in the program on the form.
