Dear Friends,

Everyone agrees that 2011 was a very big year for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Cleveland

Zoological Society. The successful completion of African Elephant Crossing is a special gift to

our community, capping nearly a decade of planning, design, fundraising and (literally) tons of

hard work. Since its opening on May 5, African Elephant Crossing has delighted more than 1.3

million visitors, including thousands of school children, while providing a high-quality habitat for

six magnificent elephants.

The impact of the new exhibit resonated across all programs in 2011, with record-setting special

events (topping $1 million for the first time) and membership (at 45,000 households, the biggest

in the region). Thanks to a generous community, the Zoo Society surpassed its ambitious capital

campaign goal by 3%, earning a prestigious national challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation

and helping ensure the successful launch of innovative education and conservation programs linked

to the new exhibit.

The Zoo and Zoo Society also completed a significant planning project in 2011 that will help shape

our future for many years to come. The joint Strategic Plan begins with a new mission statement

that anchors all of our work together and calls on us to seek ways to strengthen our public /

partnership to maximize effectiveness and grow support. Mapping out a bold and creative vision

for the Zoo campus — with an abundance of opportunities for new and renovated exhibits and

programs — has invigorated both organizations. With the Strategic Plan as our guide, we will

engage the community and continue to build a vibrant and thriving Zoo for this region.

We look forward to working with you in the years ahead to fulfill our dreams, and thank you for

making 2011 one of our biggest years ever!

AFRICAN ELEPHANT CROSSINGThanks to the visionary leadership of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and to Zoo Society

donors, African Elephant Crossing exceeds all expectations

The Capital Campaign for African Elephant Crossing was a significant success,

helping create one of the best elephant exhibits in the United States and building

capacity for both the nonprofit Cleveland Zoological Society and its partner,

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The $12.8 million raised through the Capital Campaign for African Elephant Crossing

is three times larger than any previous campaign in the Zoo Society’s history. The

goal ($12.5 million) was also three times larger than the sum total of the Zoo

Society’s net assets at the campaign’s inception.

Thanks to a generous community, a persuasive Case for Support and effective

campaign management, the campaign total exceeded the goal by 3%. The

campaign also brought many new donors into the fold, with a total of 3,800+

campaign contributors (11 times as many as any previous campaign). Compared

to the prior campaign, the core of donors giving at least $100 more than doubled,

from 300 to 700.

Impressed by the Zoo’s accessibility and broad audience, in 2009 the Kresge

Foundation selected the Zoo Society’s Capital Campaign for African Elephant

Crossing for a significant challenge grant. This prestigious grant guaranteed that

dollars raised through the completion of the campaign would be matched. With the

completion of the campaign, the Zoo Society accepted $725,000 in matching funds

from the Kresge Foundation.

A large part of our success is due to the community’s embrace of the Zoo, and their

pride in an ambitious and carefully planned project that will deliver quality of life

enhancements, jobs and education to the region.

By any measure, this was an ambitious campaign for an ambitious project designed

to transform the visitor experience and how the Zoo cares for a flagship species.

The project and the campaign represent turning points for both the Zoo and its

nonprofit advocate, the Zoo Society.

The campaign has been an amazing journey — making new friends and deepening friendships with long-time supporters. What is clear from our wonderful committee members and generous donors is that Northeast Ohio loves its Zoo. Through gifts of all shapes and sizes, our community has shown how deeply it cares about the future of wildlife and the great benefits the Zoo brings to our region. Thank you to all 3,800+ donors who made this wonderful project a reality!

VIP Preview May 4, 2011A Year of Celebrating

African Elephant Crossing

The Zoo and Zoo Society commemorated the opening of

African Elephant Crossing in grand fashion with no less

than 13 separate celebrations. These ranged from exclusive

exhibit previews to grand opening events. All told, 46,000

people came to the Zoo on opening weekend to celebrate

the debut of the Zoo’s new exhibit.

The opening of African Elephant Crossing generated great

enthusiasm in the community, helping enhance the Zoo

Society’s signature annual events like our gala celebration

ZippityZooDoo and the ever-popular Twilight at the Zoo

presented by Scene Magazine. For the first time in its

history, the Zoo Society raised more than $1 million dollars

through its special events.

Zoo educators help lead a learning journey where visitors use hands-on tools to observe, explore, collect data and apply scientific principles. An interactive solar panel, alternative energy kits, biofacts and measuring instruments help transform African Elephant Crossing into a collaborative learning laboratory where curiosity and reasoning lead to understanding.

Our world is changing rapidly. Innovation, globalization, technology and the pressure

to compete economically have reshaped education.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Cleveland Zoological Society have a long history

of providing top-notch education programming for our community. The continuum

of learning opportunities available at the Zoo promote scientific thinking and critical

analysis, and are available to students in preschool through graduate school and

beyond. The Zoo’s approach emphasizes collaboration and a sense of personal

responsibility, all while encouraging respect for animals and our shared environment.

Connections to Africa, a new education program launched in 2011, brings students

and teachers to the center of the Zoo’s newest living, breathing classroom, African

Elephant Crossing. Connections to Africa uses an interactive inquiry-based approach

to capture the attention of students and teachers alike.

An inquiry-based approach helps students to:

• Make observations

• Pose questions

• Research and examine facts

• Analyze data with the help of tools

• Propose answers, explanations and predictions

• Communicate solutions

CONSERVATION EDUCATIONToday’s students need a broad and diverse skill set to compete with their peers around the world

The popularity of African Elephant Crossing and Connections to Africa cannot be

denied. In addition to growth in overall membership and attendance, school field trips

to the Zoo rebounded with a 4% increase over the prior year. Zoo field trip participants

totalled 83,000 in 2011, making this one of the biggest programs in the region.

As the Zoo Society continues to focus fundraising efforts on important Zoo Education

initiatives, the goal is to eliminate barriers to education programs for our community’s

children, ensuring that all children, regardless of circumstance, benefit from the very best

science and real world experiences that the Zoo has to offer.

Significant funding for new education initiatives in 2011 was provided by the Cleveland Foundation, the Nord Family Foundation and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation

CONSERVATION & RESEARCHCleveland Metroparks Zoo has evolved from a place of exhibition to one of

inspiration, a world-renowned center for conservation action

The Zoo and Zoo Society work to ensure the health and well-being of the animals

in our care, as well as to support the conservation of these species in the wild. The

unique resources and expertise within the Zoo and the support of the Zoo Society

make this possible, and we are increasingly committed to conservation in the wild

as a fundamental aspect of our mission.

The opening of the state-of-the-art African Elephant Crossing gives the Zoo and Zoo

Society an outstanding opportunity to raise awareness of conservation challenges

in sub-Saharan Africa, and to connect Cleveland-area visitors with the wider world.

African Elephant Crossing is an ideal setting for field trips and families to pause for

a public conversation about choices and resources and how humans and wildlife can

share the planet sustainably. The impact of African Elephant Crossing does not stop

in Northeast Ohio. Elephant conservation initiatives in Botswana, Kenya, Namibia

and Tanzania represent just a few of the global conservation projects supported

by the Zoo and Zoo Society each year. Effective conservation considers local and

regional practices, and develops programs that are sensitive to the needs of people

living with wildlife.

In 2011 the Zoo Society established a new Conservation Fund for Wildlife in Wild

Places that represents a long-term commitment to conserving biodiversity. The fund

will generate interest income and help increase direct distributions to conservation

initiatives, currently totaling $350,000 annually. The Conservation Fund for Wildlife

in Wild Places will allow the Zoo and Zoo Society to build on its strong track record

and excellent reputation for conservation partnerships, while providing enhanced

support for critical conservation efforts.

The Zoo and Zoo Society help ensure that veterinary care, enrichment and well-being programs are the best

they can be for all of the animals in our care.

Page 13: 2011 Annual Report

Cleveland Zoological Society | 13

We care about animals. This basic tenet tops the Zoo and Zoo Society’s list of seven

strategic focus areas; animal well-being is of paramount concern. In 2011, the Zoo

Society made great strides by funding several important items on our veterinarians’

“wish list.”

Thanks to generous donors, the Zoo Society was able to move forward with

the purchase of digital radiology equipment for the Zoo’s team of veterinary

professionals. The acquisition of this equipment is a significant step in our efforts

to provide the best diagnostics possible for the nearly 1,000 Zoo animals cared

for each year at the Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine. The

unit’s superlative image quality and flexibility have had an immediate impact.

The Zoo’s veterinary team are now able to more quickly diagnose and treat

illness in a wider range of species than ever before. Also, the electronic format

allows the veterinarians to share images and consult with colleagues on-site and

around the world.

In 2011 the Zoo Society received a significant donation from JDD Holdings, LLC

to purchase diagnostic ultrasound and thermography equipment. Cleveland

Metroparks Zoo’s Associate Research Curator Dr. Mandi Vick can now use this state-

of-the-art equipment to monitor the reproductive health of black rhinos and African

elephants. The ultrasound and thermography units are also instrumental in tumor

detection and cardiac monitoring for a wide range of species.

WORLD-CLASS VETERINARY CAREQuality animal care is at the heart of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Life Trustee Billie Steffee (center) with David and Laura Steffee and their children, Sydney, Abigail, and Dawson. The David Steffee Veterinary Endowment Fund, established in 2004, helps provide the very best in animal care for our Zoo’s animals and allows our state-of-the-art facility (pictured top) to lead the industry in veterinary and conservation research.

SHAPING THE FUTURE ZOO

An exciting vision for the 183-acre campus combines the best in animal care and

visitor experiences, ensuring the Zoo and Zoo Society will emerge as industry leaders

while forging profound and lasting connections with Northeast Ohio citizens. The

Strategic Plan embraces our campus ecology, and strengthens the organization’s

commitment to sustainable operations and a stronger financial model.

The success of the Zoo and Zoo Society in implementing the new Strategic Plan

depends on our ability to embrace change and pursue ambitious goals with Zoo

leadership, working in tandem with the Zoo Society in a stronger partnership

than ever before, aligned with Metroparks leadership in a holistic approach to

achieving excellence.

To lay the groundwork for a sustainable future, the Zoo and Zoo Society jointly engaged in an intensive, comprehensive planning process

With the Strategic Plan as our guide, we will engage the community and continue

to build a vibrant and thriving Zoo for this region. Working together, the Zoo and

Zoo Society will:

1. Evaluate opportunities to increase earned revenue to invest back into the Zoo and create a long-term sustainable business model

2. Continually seek ways to strengthen the public / private partnership to maximize effectiveness and grow support

3. Identify a combination of short-term facility improvements and longer-term projects which appeal to visitors, the community and donors

4. Build on the momentum, energy and excitement created with the opening of African Elephant Crossing

5. Increase current levels of capital spending — both for new projects and to enhance facilities

Consultants from two expert firms — Schultz & Williams and CLRdesign — guided our process. We gratefully acknowledge funding from the Cleveland Foundation, Cleveland Metroparks and the Cleveland Zoological Society’s ZooFutures Fund.

Happy 20th Anniversary! The Adopt an Animal program celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011. In honor of this special occasion a group of proud ZooParents that have been supporting the program since its inception visited the Zoo and enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime behind-the-scenes adventure. THANK YOU to everyone who attended the tour and for your dedication and support of the Adopt an Animal program!

Three Most Popular Animals Adopted in 2011

Dear Zoo Friends:

As our most dedicated supporters, you know

quality animal care is at the very heart of what

the Zoo does each day. Dedicated programs

in veterinary care, enrichment and well-being

help ensure the remarkable animals entrusted

to us enjoy the best quality of life possible.

Each year Zoo veterinarians and curators face

wonderful opportunities and difficult situations

that require measures above and beyond

routine care.

Please consider giving a gift to our We

Care for Animals Campaign today. Current

priorities include diagnostic veterinary

equipment and elevated hay feeders and

puzzles for the elephants. Gifts of all sizes

are welcome.

Thank you for helping to provide the very best

quality of life for the amazing animals in our

care.

Sincerely,

Steve TaylorDirector Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Elizabeth T. Fowler Executive DirectorCleveland Zoological Society

The David Steffee Address in Veterinary Medicine is

made possible because of the passion and generosity of

Life Trustee Billie Steffee. In 2011 the Zoo welcomed

distinguished speaker Dr. Mike Loomis, Chief

Veterinarian for the North Carolina Zoo. Dr. Loomis

offered a fascinating, in-depth look at important work

being done in Cameroon, to study how elephants and

humans are interacting in that country’s national parks.

Also at the event was the Zoo’s Chief Veterinarian Dr.

Albert “Doc” Lewandowski, the David Steffee Chair

of Veterinary Medicine, who took the opportunity to

extend his thanks to Philips Medical Systems’ “Dream

Team” for their expert assistance repairing the Zoo’s CT

scanner. Philips contributed the high-tech tool in 2003,

making Cleveland Metroparks Zoo the first zoo in the

country with CT scanner.
