The seventh official season of Seawolf track & field promises to be one of the most competitive yet as UAA returns an abun-dance of talented and experienced student-athletes in 2011 . The Seawolves return 27 members from a year ago (16 men, 11 women) and add 16 newcomers to the roster (5 men, 11 wom-en) . In addition, the Seawolves will get All-Americans David Registe and Shaun Ward back after the duo redshirted last season due to injuries . “We are eager to see senior All-Amer-ican David Registe back in action, as well as classmate Shaun Ward,” said head coach Michael Friess, “Both will be exciting to watch .” This year’s edition returns two 2010 All-Americans in junior Alfred Kangogo and sophomore Micah Chelimo, while UAA re-turns two NCAA participants on the wom-en’s side in junior Miriam Kipng’eno and sophomore Ruth Keino . “The women’s squad has vastly improved from last season,” said Friess, “The returners and newcomers will provide a mix of talent, capable of great things .” Combined multiple gifted newcomers to the Seawolf mix, and the 2011 slate could be the most remembered to date . “We hope to continue challenging school records this season and setting the bar high,” said Friess . UAA will compete in nine meets in Cali-fornia, two in Oregon and one in Nevada throughout the next three months – including the prestigious 53rd annual Mt . SAC Relays on April 14-16 in Walnut, Calif . Qualifying Seawolves will wrap up the season with the GNAC Championships on May 13-14 at Monmouth, Ore ., and at the NCAA Champi-onships on May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif . “We are looking forward to the first com-petition of the season at UNLV, especially the student-athletes that have been preparing since September,” said Friess, “It will be a good meet for us to jump start the season .”

One of the nation’s most respected track & field mentors, Michael Friess is in his 21st season as head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2010-11 .

In less than a decade as a full-fledged program, Friess has piloted UAA’s track & field squad to success on a national level, qualifying 34 athletes for NCAAs since 2001 . A program-record 10 Seawolves competed at the Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2009, and the UAA men finished 14th in the nation in both 2009 and 2010 . Friess has earned six conference coach-of-the-year accolades in cross country, including three straight women’s coach-of-the-year honors from 2003-05 . In 2009 he added the West Region Men’s Track & Field COY honor, and in the fall he was named the West Region Women’s COY in cross country . In six seasons of full institutional sponsorship, the Seawolf track & field teams have quickly left their mark on the Great Northwest Ath-letic Conference under Friess, earning one individual NCAA title and two runner-up finishes, 16 All-America awards, 34 individual confer-ence titles, 65 all-conference honorees, and nine league records . In that same span, 35 UAA athletes have qualified for NCAAs . Athletes have excelled in the classroom as well under Friess, earn-ing 116 academic all-conference accolades over the last nine seasons . Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams garnered U .S . Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-America Team status in 2010, continuing annual tradition of success in the classroom . Friess graduated from Linfield (Ore .) College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1985 and was an NAIA All-American distance runner for the Wildcats . He earned a master’s degree in sport biomechanics from

the University of Oregon in 1986 . A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High, Friess remains active in the local running com-munity as a competitor, coach and organizer . Some of the events Friess organizes include the Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon and the Crow Pass Crossing . A USA Track & Field Level II coach, Friess is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by ACSM as an exercise test technologist and exercise special-ist . He and his wife Stephanie have two children, Meagan – a former Seawolf track & field athlete – and Steven .

T .J . Garlatz is in his fourth season as an as-sistant coach with Alaska Anchorage’s cross country and track & field programs . In addition to his coaching duties with the Seawolves, Garlatz serves extensively as a

recruiter for UAA . Last season, Garlatz helped the women’s cross country team to its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles, while producing a combined three All-Americans at the NCAAs . During the track & field season, the Seawolves recorded nine conference titles and sent a combined nine athletes to Nationals . For his work, Garlatz was honored with the USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2010 outdoor season . In 2008-09, Garlatz helped lead both the men’s and women’s cross country teams to the NCAA Championships and produced three All-Americans . The track & field season was highlighted by a program-best 10 UAA athletes qualifying for the National meet, where the Seawolves captured five All-America awards . During his first season with UAA in 2007-08, Garlatz helped guide the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the GNAC Cham-pionships and a fifth-place result at the NCAA West Regional . He helped oversee both the men’s and women’s track squads to program-best finishes at the conference championship meet . Garlatz came to the Seawolves after serving as an assistant coach at Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Washington for three seasons . While at WWU, Garlatz helped guide the Vikings to a conference title in men’s cross country (2006), two men’s indoor track & field conference championships (2005, 2006) and one GNAC title in men’s outdoor track & field (2005) . Five athletes earned All-America honors and 27 earned all-conference recognition during Garlatz’s tenure at WWU, while six were named Academic All-Americans . A postgraduate athlete at WWU, Garlatz competed in both cross country and track & field for one season, helping lead the Vikings to the 2003 GNAC title in men’s cross country . He also earned an individual conference championship in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 outdoor track & field championships . Prior to his coaching stint at WWU, Garlatz served as an assistant coach with the cross country and track & field program’s at Inglemoor High School (Kenmore, Wash .) from Sept . 1998 to June 2003 . The former NCAA Division II Academic All-American earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Washington in 2002 and a Master’s of Science in Exercise Science from WWU in 2007 . He and his wife Kristin were married in July 2010 .

Beginning his fifth season as an assistant with the UAA track & field team in 2011 is Rafael Echavarria . Echavarria previously served as an assis-tant coach at Dimond High School for 15

years, where he helped guide the boys team to two state titles and three state runner-up results . A former member of the Mexican National Track & Field team, Echavarria competed collegiately at Brigham Young University where he still holds the school record in the 110-meter high hurdles (13 .79) and stands seventh all-time in the 400-meter hurdles . He claimed a Western Athletic Conference championship in the 110-meter hurdles while at BYU as well . In international competition, Echavarria collected a gold medal at the 1979 Central American Games in the 110-meter hurdles and a bronze in the 400-meter hurdles . He also produced fifth- and seventh- place finishes in the 110 hurdles at the World University Games . He graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical edu-cation from BYU in 1983 .

Former UAA cross country and track & field star David Kiplagat is in his second sea-son with UAA in 2010-11 . A three-time All-American, Kiplagat will use his experience and success to help the

young squad this season . A native of Kapsabet, Kenya, Kiplagat graduated from UAA in the spring of 2009 as the most decorated distance runner ever to suit up for the Green and Gold . In addition to his three All-America awards, Kiplagat was a four-time All-Region honoree and a three-time All-Conference member . In 2006 he captured the individual GNAC cross country title and won the 1,500-meter race at the conference cham-pionships in track . Kiplagat returned the following season with a GNAC title in the 5,000 meters . Kiplagat earned a bachelor’s of Business Administration in Fi-nance and Economics and is pursuing a master’s in public adminis-tration .He also received five Academic All-Conference accolades during his

Joining the Alaska Anchorage track & field team for the second season as a graduate as-sistant is former All-American Ryan McWil-liams . McWilliams competed for the Angelo

State Rams from 2005 to 2009, registering six top-10 finishes at the NCAAs, including three All-America honors in the decathlon and two in the 110 hurdles . The Rams’ team captain ended his career with a runner-up finish in the decathlon, seventh in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the mile relay at the 2009 NCAA Div . II Championships . McWilliams graduated from ASU in 2009 with a major in kinesi-ology and exercise science . He is currently working on a master’s in public health at UAA . The Alpine, Texas, native helps handle UAA’s sprinters and jump-

A recent Alaska Anchorage graduate, James McLaughlin joins Michael Friess’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach for the 2011 track & field season . McLaughlin was a four-year letterwinner

at UAA, where he posted two GNAC titles as a member of the 4x400-meter relay (2010, 2008), and registered a combined six all-confer-ence honors . McLaughlin wrapped up his collegiate career with the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay that set a new UAA record on May 8, 2010 with a time of 3:14 .98 – also qualifying the team provisionally for the NCAAs . Throughout his career with the Seawolves, McLaughlin set person-als bests of 11 .30 in the 100, 22 .18 in the 200 and 48 .15 in the 400 . The East Bethel, Minn ., native will assist with the sprinters .

Head athletic trainer Chris Volk enters her 17th season with the UAA Athletic Department . in 2010-11 . Volk cares for the treatment

and prevention of injuries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office . A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986 . She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association . She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan, Cody and Casey .

Dallas Baldwin is in her third season as UAA’s Assistant Sports Information Director in 2010-11 . Baldwin serves as the Univer-sity’s hockey, cross country run-

ning, skiing and track & field contact, while helping coordinate the GoSeawolves .com website . Baldwin also serves on the UAA Hall of Fame committee . A 2007 graduate of Worcester State College in Mas-sachusetts, Baldwin received a bachelor’s degree in communications . After graduation she completed her in-ternship at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo during the 2007-08 season .

The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves reg-istered multiple successes during the 2010 track & field season as they produced four All-Americans at the NCAA Cham-pionships, won a combined nine titles at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, recorded 14 all-confer-ence finishes, broke three GNAC records ,and set 16 new UAA records . The Seawolves qualified nine athletes (5 women, 4 men) for the NCAA Div . II Track & Field Championships in just the sixth year of the program . The UAA men’s team, which finished 14th with 17 points, captured four All-Americans in juniors Demietrius Preston and Marko Cheseto, sophomore Alfred Kangogo and freshman Micah Chelimo . Preston, an Anchorage native, recorded UAA’s best finish of the meet, finishing 2nd in the long jump with a personal best of 25-3 .25 . Cheseto (Kapenguria, Kenya) earned two All-America accolades, finish-ing 6th in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters re-peating his feat as the only Seawolf to re-cord two All-America honors in the same season . Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya) regis-tered his first All-America award with an 8th-place showing in the 1,500 meters, while Chelimo (Kapkoi, Kenya) raced to 7th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase . On the women’s side, senior Elisha Harris (West Jordan, Utah) and sopho-more Ruth Keino (Kapcheno, Kenya) both produced a team-best 11th-place fin-ish in their respective events . Harris re-corded a toss of 134-9 in the javelin, while Keino registered a UAA-record time of 16:44 .24 in the 5,000 meters . Also repre-senting UAA at the NCAAs were senior Laura Carr (10K), junior Hallidie Wilt (3,000-meter steeplechase) and sopho-more Miriam Kipng’eno (1500m, 5K) . The Seawolves wrapped up the GNAC Championships on May 14-15 with a combined nine titles (8 individual, 1 re-lay) . The men’s team finished 4th with 130 points, while the women’s squad was 6th (68 points) . Leading the Seawolf pack with three all-conference finishes and earning the meet’s Most Outstanding Male Perform-er was Kangogo . He won the 800m and 1500m, while placing runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase . Also tallying three all-conference honors was Cheseto, who raced to victories in the 5K and 10K

and was second in the 1500m . Three Sea-wolves picked up two all-con-ference hon-ors – Chelimo ( 3 0 0 0 - m e t e r s teeplechase, 5,000 meters) and freshman Ethan Hewitt (400 meters, 4 x 4 0 0 - m e t e r relay) and se-nior James M c L a u g h l i n (400 meters, 4 x 4 0 0 - m e t e r relay) – while Preston (long jump), se-nior Brandon Grant (4x400) and freshman Brad Truax (4x400mR) each earned one all-conference honor . On the women’s side, ju-nior Ardrienna Everett was the lone Seawolf woman to win a conference title . The Palmer local crossed the finish line first in the 400-me-ter hurdles, while senior Laura Carr re-corded her fourth career all-conference award with a 2nd-place effort in the 5K . Throughout the season, the Seawolves set 16 new school records (8 men, 8 wom-en) and three GNAC records . Breaking the GNAC 400m record was Hewiit at the Northridge Relays with a time of 47 .62, while Chelimo smashed the 3,000-me-ter steeplechase mark with a new time of 8:49 .31 . Cheseto bested his own confer-ence record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:58 .85 . Other UAA records were broken by Kangogo (1,500m, 3:49 .46), freshman Andrew Freed (triple jump, 44-8 .75), ju-nior Casey Robinson (javelin, 175-7) and senior Ryan Rencehausen (hammer throw, 144-5) . The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Hewitt, Truax, Grant and James McLaughlin posted a new record time of 3:14 .98 . Setting UAA records for the UAA women were Carr (10,000, 35:08 .51) and Harris (javelin, 141-4), Everett (400 Hurdles, 1:02 .37) and Hallidie Wilt (steeplechase, 10:48 .90) and Keino in the 5,000m (16:44 .24) and 1500m (4:34 .34) .

The women’s 4x400-meter relay record fell to senior Meagan Friess and Wilt, Ev-erett and Emma Bohman with a time of 4:00 .61 .

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Stretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference

has quickly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks . Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC this year returns to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia . Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joins original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fair banks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington in

2010-11 . In the last three years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runner-up finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009 . UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – vol-leyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field .

FRAN ULMERChancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

As chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, Fran Ulmer brings to the position 30 years of experience of public policy in Alaska . Previously, Ulmer was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Institute of Social and Economic Research . In the early 1980s, Ulmer served as the Mayor of Juneau, then a member

of the Alaska House of Representatives (1986-1994) and in 1994, she became the first female Lieutenant Governor of Alaska . In that year, she was appointed to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission by President Bill Clinton and served on this international board for 11 years . She has participated in numerous panels, task forces, commissions and forums as a speaker, moderator and panelist to address the intersection of science, economics, politics and policy . Ulmer currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Advisory Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Alaska Nature Conservancy Board . She has a BA in political science and economics and a Law Degree from the University of Wisconsin .

DR. STEVE COBBDirector of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 10 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr . Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edented heights . Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of com-petition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways . The 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns were three of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for

Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, skiing (three times), and men’s track & field (twice) . With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals . Under Dr . Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA . He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers and the construction of the All-American/Academic All-American honors wall . In 2005, Dr . Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA . Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008 . Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments . The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium . A former football coach, Dr . Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA . In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr . Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference champion-ships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball . From 1992-95, Dr . Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach . He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90) . A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr . Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St . Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State . Dr . Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage .

SEAWOLF ATHLETICSNicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country.

UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic and the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournament.

Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 150 Sea-wolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991.

The Seawolves are coming off perhaps the most successful year in program history in 2009-10, including a fourth straight NCAA appearance for women’s basketball. The women’s cross country team recorded its first-ever GNAC and West Region titles before finishing a program-best 5th place at the NCAAs, while the volleyball team completed the best season in school history with a 23-8 overall record and its first GNAC title and first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 13 of the last 16 years.

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 stu-dents through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic-tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.
